Deuteronomy

Chapter 20

1 WHEN you go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses and chariots and a people more than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

2 And when you come near to the battle, the priest shall approach and speak to the people,

3 And shall say to them, Hear, O Israel, you approach this day to the battle with your enemies; let not your heart faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be terrified because of them;

4 For the LORD your God is he that goes with you, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and it is he who shall fight for you with your enemies, and he shall save you.

5 Then the scribes shall speak to the people, saying, What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? Let him return and go to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

6 And what man is there who has planted a vineyard, and has not yet trod the grapes of it? Let him return and go to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man tread its grapes.

7 And what man is there who has betrothed a wife, and has not taken her? Let him return and go to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.

8 And the scribes shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, What man is there who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him return and go to his house, lest his brethren's heart faint as well as his heart.

9 And when the scribes have made an end of speaking to the people, the commanders of the army shall stand at the head of the people.

10 When you come near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it.

11 And if the city give you answer of peace, and it open to you, then all the people who are found in it shall be servants and tributaries to you, and they shall serve you.

12 But if it will not surrender to you, but will make war with you, then you shall besiege it;

13 And when the LORD your God has delivered it into your hands, you shall slay all its males with the edge of the sword;

14 But the women and the little ones and the cattle and all that is in the city, even all its spoil, you shall plunder for yourselves; and you shall eat of the spoil of your enemies, which the LORD your God gives you.

15 Thus shall you do to all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations.

16 But of the cities of these people which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes;

17 But you shall utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD your God has commanded you;

18 That they may not teach you to do after all their abominations, which they have done in worshipping their gods; so you should sin in the sight of the LORD your God.

19 When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to capture it, you shall not destroy its trees, nor wield an axe against them; because you may eat of them, and you shall not cut them down (for the trees of the field are not like men to flee from before you at the time of the siege).

20 Only the trees which you know are not trees for food you may destroy and cut down that you may build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it is captured.

Глава 20

1 Когда ты пойдешь на войну против врага твоего, и увидишь коней и колесницы [и] народа более, нежели у тебя: то не бойся их; ибо с тобою Иегова, Бог твой, который вывел тебя из земли Египетской.

2 Когда же надобно вступить вам в сражение, тогда священник пусть подойдет и говорит народу,

3 И скажет ему: слушай, Израиль, вы сегодня вступаете в сражение с врагами вашими, да не ослабеет сердце ваше, не бойтесь, не смущайтесь и не ужасайтесь их;

4 Ибо Иегова, Бог ваш, идет с вами, чтобы сразиться за вас с врагами вашими [и] спасти вас.

5 Надзиратели же пусть объявят народу, и скажут: кто построил новый дом и не обновил его, тот пусть идет и возвратится в дом свой, дабы не умер на сражении, и другой не обновил его.

6 И кто насадил виноградник и не пользовался им, тот пусть идет и возвратится в дом свой, дабы не умер на сражении, и другой не воспользовался им.

7 И кто обручился с женою и не взял ее, тот пусть идет и возвратится в дом свой, дабы не умер на сражении, и другой не взял ее.

8 Потом надзиратели еще объявят народу, и скажут: кто боязлив и малодушен, тот пусть идет и возвратится в дом свой, дабы он не сделал робким сердца братьев его, как его сердце.

9 Когда надзиратели скажут все сие народу, тогда должны они поставить военных начальников в вожди народа.

10 Когда подойдешь к городу, чтоб завоевать его, предложи ему мир.

11 Если он согласится на мир с тобою и отворит тебе ворота, то весь народ, который найдется в нем, будет платить тебе дань и служить тебе.

12 Если же он не согласится на мир с тобою и будет вести с тобою войну, то осади его.

13 И когда Иегова, Бог твой, предаст его в руки твои, порази в нем весь мужеский пол острием меча:

14 Только жен и детей и [весь] скот и все, что будет в городе, всю добычу его возьми себе, и пользуйся [всею] добычею врагов твоих, которых предал тебе Иегова, Бог твой.

15 Так поступай со всеми городами, которые от тебя весьма далеко, которые не из числа городов народов сих.

16 А в городах сих народов, которых [землю] Иегова, Бог твой, дает тебе в удел, не оставляй в живых ни одной души.

17 Но предай их заклятию: Хеттеев, и Аморреев, и Хананеев, и Ферезеев, и Евеев, и Иевусеев, [и Гергесеев,] как повелел тебе Иегова, Бог твой:

18 Дабы они не научили вас делать такие же мерзости, какие они делали для богов своих; и дабы вы не грешили пред Иеговою, Богом вашим.

19 Если долгое время будешь держать в осаде [какой-нибудь] город, чтобы завоевать его и взять его: то не порть дерев его, и не поднимай на них топора; ешь [плоды] с них, а не руби их: ибо дерево на поле разве человек, чтоб оно ушло от тебя в крепость?

20 Только те дерева, о которых ты знаешь, что они ничего не приносят в пищу, можешь портить и рубить, и строить укрепления против города, который ведет с тобою войну, доколе не покоришь его.

18 Дабы они не научили вас делать такие же мерзости, какие они делали для богов своих; и дабы вы не грешили пред Иеговою, Богом вашим.

19 Если долгое время будешь держать в осаде [какой-нибудь] город, чтобы завоевать его и взять его: то не порть дерев его, и не поднимай на них топора; ешь [плоды] с них, а не руби их: ибо дерево на поле разве человек, чтоб оно ушло от тебя в крепость?

20 Only the trees which you know are not trees for food you may destroy and cut down that you may build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it is captured.

20 Только те дерева, о которых ты знаешь, что они ничего не приносят в пищу, можешь портить и рубить, и строить укрепления против города, который ведет с тобою войну, доколе не покоришь его.
