Chapter 14

1 THEN all the congregation was in commotion, and lifted up their voices and cried; and the people wept that night.

2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron; and the whole congregation said to them, Would God we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would God that we had died in this wilderness!

3 Why has the LORD brought us into this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and children should be a prey? We were better off when we dwelt in Egypt.

4 And they said one to another, Let us appoint a leader, and let us return to Egypt.

5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

6 And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jophaniah, who were of those who had spied out the land, rent their clothes;

7 And they said to all the congregation of the children of Israel, The land through which we passed to spy it out is an exceedingly good land.

8 If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land which flows indeed with milk and honey.

9 Only do not rebel against the LORD, neither be afraid of the people of the land; for their conquest will be as easy as eating bread; their strength has left them, and the LORD is with us; fear them not.

10 But the whole congregation said to stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.

11 And the LORD said to Moses, How long will this people provoke me? And how long will they not believe me, for all the signs which I have done among them?

12 I will smite them with pestilence, and destroy them, and I will make of you a nation which is greater and mightier than they.

13 And Moses said to the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it (for thou didst bring up this people in thy might from among them),

14 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land; for they have heard that thou LORD art in the midst of this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud stands over them, and that thou goest before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.

15 And if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations who have heard the fame of thee will say,

16 Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.

17 And now, let thy power, O LORD, be great according as thou hast spoken, saying,

18 The LORD is longsuffering and of great mercy, and thou forgivest iniquity and transgression, by no means clearing the guilty, but visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and upon their children's children to the third and fourth generation.

19 Pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven them from Egypt even until now.

20 And the LORD said to Moses, I have forgiven them according to your word;

21 But as truly as I live, the whole earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.

22 And yet all the men who have seen my glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness have tempted me, behold now, these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;

23 Surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any one of those who provoked me see it;

24 But my servant Caleb, because he has my spirit with him and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went; and his descendants shall possess it.

25 (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the mountains.) Tomorrow turn and set out for the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.

26 And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

27 How long shall this wicked congregation murmur in my presence? I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel which they murmur in my presence.

28 Say to them, As I live, says the LORD, as you have spoken in my presence, so will I do to you;

29 Your corpses shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, because you have murmured against me.

30 You shall not come into the land concerning which I swore to make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jophaniah, and Joshua the son of Nun.

31 But your little ones, who you said would become the prey, and your sons who today do not know good and evil, they shall enter into the land, and I will bring them there, and they shall know the land which you have despised.

32 But as for you, your corpses shall fall in this wilderness.

33 And your sons shall be shepherds forty years in this wilderness, and shall suffer for your whoredom until your corpses are consumed in this wilderness.

34 According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, a year for each day, shall you suffer for your iniquities, forty years; then you shall know that it is because you have murmured before me.

35 I the LORD have said, I will surely do it to all this evil congregation that are gathered together before me; in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.

36 And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation murmur against him by publishing an evil report concerning the land,

37 These men who published an evil report of the land died by a sudden plague before the LORD.

38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jophaniah, who were of the men who went to spy out the land, still lived.

39 And Moses told these sayings to all the children of Israel; and the people mourned greatly.

40 And they rose up early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, Behold, we will go up to the place which the LORD has promised us; for we have sinned.

41 And Moses said to them, Why now do you transgress the commandment of the LORD? Therefore you shall not succeed.

42 Do not go up, for the LORD is not with you; lest you be defeated before your enemies.

43 For the Canaanites and the Amalekites are there before you, and you shall fall by the sword; because you are turned away from following the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.

44 Yet they started to go up to the top of the mountain; but neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses departed out of the camp.

45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who dwelt in that mountain came down and smote them and pursued them as far as Hirmah.

1 І зняла́ зойк уся та громада, та й заголосила. І плакав народ той тієї ночі.

2 І нарікали на Мойсея та на Аарона всі Ізраїлеві сини. І сказала до них вся громада: „О, якби ми померли були́ в єгипетськім кра́ї, або щоб ми померли були в цій пустині!

3 І нащо Господь провадить нас до того кра́ю, щоб нам попа́дати від меча? Жінки́ наші та діти наші стануть здо́биччю... Чи не краще нам верну́тися до Єгипту?“

4 І сказали вони один до о́дного: „Оберімо собі го́лову, та й вертаймось до Єгипту!“

5 I впали Мойсей та Аарон на обличчя свої перед усім збором громади Ізраїлевих синів.

6 А Ісу́с, син Нави́нів, та Калев, син Єфуннеїв, із тих, що розвідували той Край, пороздирали одежу свою,

7 та й сказали до всієї громади Ізраїлевих синів, говорячи: „Той край, що перейшли́ ми по ньому, щоб розвідати його, край той дуже-дуже хороший!

8 Якщо Господь уподо́бає Собі нас, то впровадить нас до того Кра́ю, і дасть його нам, край, який тече молоком та медом.

9 Тільки не бунтуйтесь проти Господа, — і не бійтеся наро́ду того кра́ю, бо вони — хліб для нас! Їхня тінь відійшла від них, а з нами Господь, — не бійтеся їх!

10 І сказала була вся громада, щоб камі́нням закидати їх, та слава Господня появилася в скинії заповіту всім Ізра́їлевим синам...

11 І промовив Господь до Мойсея: „Аж доки буде цей наро́д зневажа́ти Мене, і аж доки не будуть вони ві́рувати в Мене, у всі ті озна́ки, що Я учинив був серед нього?

12 Ударю його поразою, і позба́влю його насліддя, а тебе зроблю́ народом більшим і сильнішим від нього“.

13 І сказав Мойсей до Господа: „І почує Єгипет, що Ти з-посеред нього вивів Своєю силою наро́д цей,

14 та й скаже до ме́шканців цього кра́ю, які чули, що Ти Господь серед цього наро́ду, що око-в-око являєшся Ти, Господи, а хмара Твоя стоїть над ними, і що Ти ходиш перед ними в стовпі хмари вдень, а в стовпі огню вночі, —

15 якщо заб'єш Ти цей наро́д, як одну люди́ну, то скажуть ті люди, що чули слух про Тебе, говорячи:

16 Через неспромо́жність Господа впрова́дити той народ до кра́ю, якого Він заприся́г був їм, вигубив їх у пустині.

17 А тепер нехай же звели́читься сила Господня, як Ти наказав був, говорячи:

18 „Господь довготерпели́вий, і багатомилости́вий, Він прощає провину та пере́ступ, і не очистить винного, а карає провину батьків на третіх і на четвертих поколі́ннях“.

19 Прости ж провину цього народу через велику милість Свою, як проща́в Ти цьому наро́дові від Єгипту й аж сюди!“

20 А Господь сказав: „Я простив за словом твоїм.

21 Але, як Я живий, — слава Господня напо́внить увесь оцей край.

22 Тому́ всі ті люди, що бачили славу Мою та озна́ки Мої, що чинив Я в Єгипті та в пустині, але випробо́вували Мене оце десять раз та не слухалися голосу Мого,

23 поправді кажу, — не побачать вони того кра́ю, що Я заприсяг був їхнім батькам. І всі, хто зневажає Мене, не побачать його́!

24 Але раб Мій Калев за те, що з ним був дух інший, і він вико́нував накази Мої, то Я введу́ його до того краю, куди він увійшов був, і пото́мство його оволодіє ним.

25 А амалики́тянин та ханаане́янин сидить у долині. Узавтра оберніться, та й руша́йте на пустиню дорогою Червоного моря!“

26 І Господь промовляв до Мойсея й до Ааро́на, говорячи:

27 „Аж доки цій злій громаді нарікати на Мене? Наріка́ння Ізраїлевих синів, що вони нарікають на Мене, Я чув.

28 Скажи їм: Живий Я! Мова Господня: Поправді кажу, — як ви говорили до ушей Моїх, так Я зроблю́ вам.

29 У цій пустині попа́дають ваші трупи, та всі перелічені ваші всім вашим числом від віку двадцяти́ літ і вище, що нарікали на Мене.

30 Поправді кажу, — ви не ввійдете до того кра́ю, що Я підносив був на присягу руку Свою, що будете перебувати в нім, — окрім Калева, сина Єфуннеєвого, та Ісуса, сина Нави́нового.

31 А діти ваші, що про них казали ви: станете здо́биччю ворогові, то впрова́джу Я їх, і пізнають вони цей край, яким ви обри́дили.

32 І ваші власні трупи попа́дають у цій пустині!

33 А ваші сини будуть блукати на пустині со́рок літ, і відповідатимуть за зраду вашу, аж поки ви́гинуть ваші трупи на пустині.

34 Числом тих днів, що розві́дували ви той край, сорок день, будете ви нести ваші гріхи по року за день — сорок літ, і пізнаєте, що значить бути покинутими Мною!

35 Я, Господь, говорив: Поправді кажу, — оце зроблю́ всій цій злій громаді, що змовляється проти Мене: у цій пустині вигинуть, і тут повмирають“.

36 А ті люди, яких Мойсей послав був розві́дати той край, коли вернулися, то зробили, що вся громада нарікала на нього, і пустили злу вістку на той край,

37 то ті люди, що пустили були злу вістку на той край, повмирали від пора́зи перед Господнім лицем.

38 А Ісус, син Нави́нів, та Калев, син Єфуннеїв, жили́ з тих людей, що ходили розвідати той край.

39 І говорив Мойсей ці слова́ до всіх Ізраїлевих синів, — і наро́д був у тяжкій жало́бі!

40 І повставали вони рано вранці, та й повихо́дили на верхі́в'я гори, говорячи: „Ось ми, — і ми пі́демо до місця, що Господь був сказав, бо ми прогрішили“.

41 А Мойсей сказав: „Чому́ ж ви переступаєте нака́з Господній? Таж це не вдасться!

42 Не виходьте, бо Господь не серед вас, а то бу́дете побиті своїми ворогами.

43 Бо там перед вами амалики́тянин і ханаане́янин, і ви попа́даєте від меча, бо ви відвернулися від Господа, і не буде Господь із вами“.

44 Але вони осмі́лилися вийти на верхів'я гори, а ковче́г свідоцтва Господнього та Мойсей не ру́шилися з-посеред табо́ру.

45 І зійшов амаликитянин та ханаанеянин, що сидить на тій горі, та й побили їх, і били їх аж до Хорми.

1 THEN all the congregation was in commotion, and lifted up their voices and cried; and the people wept that night.	1 І зняла́ зойк уся та громада, та й заголосила. І плакав народ той тієї ночі.
2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron; and the whole congregation said to them, Would God we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would God that we had died in this wilderness!	2 І нарікали на Мойсея та на Аарона всі Ізраїлеві сини. І сказала до них вся громада: „О, якби ми померли були́ в єгипетськім кра́ї, або щоб ми померли були в цій пустині!
3 Why has the LORD brought us into this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and children should be a prey? We were better off when we dwelt in Egypt.	3 І нащо Господь провадить нас до того кра́ю, щоб нам попа́дати від меча? Жінки́ наші та діти наші стануть здо́биччю... Чи не краще нам верну́тися до Єгипту?“
4 And they said one to another, Let us appoint a leader, and let us return to Egypt.	4 І сказали вони один до о́дного: „Оберімо собі го́лову, та й вертаймось до Єгипту!“

6 And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jophaniah, who were of those who had spied out the land, rent their clothes;	6 А Ісу́с, син Нави́нів, та Калев, син Єфуннеїв, із тих, що розвідували той Край, пороздирали одежу свою,
7 And they said to all the congregation of the children of Israel, The land through which we passed to spy it out is an exceedingly good land.	7 та й сказали до всієї громади Ізраїлевих синів, говорячи: „Той край, що перейшли́ ми по ньому, щоб розвідати його, край той дуже-дуже хороший!
8 If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land which flows indeed with milk and honey.	8 Якщо Господь уподо́бає Собі нас, то впровадить нас до того Кра́ю, і дасть його нам, край, який тече молоком та медом.
9 Only do not rebel against the LORD, neither be afraid of the people of the land; for their conquest will be as easy as eating bread; their strength has left them, and the LORD is with us; fear them not.	9 Тільки не бунтуйтесь проти Господа, — і не бійтеся наро́ду того кра́ю, бо вони — хліб для нас! Їхня тінь відійшла від них, а з нами Господь, — не бійтеся їх!
10 But the whole congregation said to stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.	10 І сказала була вся громада, щоб камі́нням закидати їх, та слава Господня появилася в скинії заповіту всім Ізра́їлевим синам...
11 And the LORD said to Moses, How long will this people provoke me? And how long will they not believe me, for all the signs which I have done among them?	11 І промовив Господь до Мойсея: „Аж доки буде цей наро́д зневажа́ти Мене, і аж доки не будуть вони ві́рувати в Мене, у всі ті озна́ки, що Я учинив був серед нього?
12 I will smite them with pestilence, and destroy them, and I will make of you a nation which is greater and mightier than they.	12 Ударю його поразою, і позба́влю його насліддя, а тебе зроблю́ народом більшим і сильнішим від нього“.
13 And Moses said to the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it (for thou didst bring up this people in thy might from among them),	13 І сказав Мойсей до Господа: „І почує Єгипет, що Ти з-посеред нього вивів Своєю силою наро́д цей,
14 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land; for they have heard that thou LORD art in the midst of this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud stands over them, and that thou goest before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.	14 та й скаже до ме́шканців цього кра́ю, які чули, що Ти Господь серед цього наро́ду, що око-в-око являєшся Ти, Господи, а хмара Твоя стоїть над ними, і що Ти ходиш перед ними в стовпі хмари вдень, а в стовпі огню вночі, —
15 And if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations who have heard the fame of thee will say,	15 якщо заб'єш Ти цей наро́д, як одну люди́ну, то скажуть ті люди, що чули слух про Тебе, говорячи:
16 Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.	16 Через неспромо́жність Господа впрова́дити той народ до кра́ю, якого Він заприся́г був їм, вигубив їх у пустині.
17 And now, let thy power, O LORD, be great according as thou hast spoken, saying,	17 А тепер нехай же звели́читься сила Господня, як Ти наказав був, говорячи:
18 The LORD is longsuffering and of great mercy, and thou forgivest iniquity and transgression, by no means clearing the guilty, but visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and upon their children's children to the third and fourth generation.	18 „Господь довготерпели́вий, і багатомилости́вий, Він прощає провину та пере́ступ, і не очистить винного, а карає провину батьків на третіх і на четвертих поколі́ннях“.
19 Pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven them from Egypt even until now.	19 Прости ж провину цього народу через велику милість Свою, як проща́в Ти цьому наро́дові від Єгипту й аж сюди!“
20 And the LORD said to Moses, I have forgiven them according to your word;	20 А Господь сказав: „Я простив за словом твоїм.
21 But as truly as I live, the whole earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.	21 Але, як Я живий, — слава Господня напо́внить увесь оцей край.
22 And yet all the men who have seen my glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness have tempted me, behold now, these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;	22 Тому́ всі ті люди, що бачили славу Мою та озна́ки Мої, що чинив Я в Єгипті та в пустині, але випробо́вували Мене оце десять раз та не слухалися голосу Мого,
23 Surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any one of those who provoked me see it;	23 поправді кажу, — не побачать вони того кра́ю, що Я заприсяг був їхнім батькам. І всі, хто зневажає Мене, не побачать його́!
24 But my servant Caleb, because he has my spirit with him and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went; and his descendants shall possess it.	24 Але раб Мій Калев за те, що з ним був дух інший, і він вико́нував накази Мої, то Я введу́ його до того краю, куди він увійшов був, і пото́мство його оволодіє ним.
25 (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the mountains.) Tomorrow turn and set out for the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.	25 А амалики́тянин та ханаане́янин сидить у долині. Узавтра оберніться, та й руша́йте на пустиню дорогою Червоного моря!“
26 And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,	26 І Господь промовляв до Мойсея й до Ааро́на, говорячи:
27 How long shall this wicked congregation murmur in my presence? I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel which they murmur in my presence.	27 „Аж доки цій злій громаді нарікати на Мене? Наріка́ння Ізраїлевих синів, що вони нарікають на Мене, Я чув.
28 Say to them, As I live, says the LORD, as you have spoken in my presence, so will I do to you;	28 Скажи їм: Живий Я! Мова Господня: Поправді кажу, — як ви говорили до ушей Моїх, так Я зроблю́ вам.
29 Your corpses shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, because you have murmured against me.	29 У цій пустині попа́дають ваші трупи, та всі перелічені ваші всім вашим числом від віку двадцяти́ літ і вище, що нарікали на Мене.
30 You shall not come into the land concerning which I swore to make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jophaniah, and Joshua the son of Nun.	30 Поправді кажу, — ви не ввійдете до того кра́ю, що Я підносив був на присягу руку Свою, що будете перебувати в нім, — окрім Калева, сина Єфуннеєвого, та Ісуса, сина Нави́нового.
31 But your little ones, who you said would become the prey, and your sons who today do not know good and evil, they shall enter into the land, and I will bring them there, and they shall know the land which you have despised.	31 А діти ваші, що про них казали ви: станете здо́биччю ворогові, то впрова́джу Я їх, і пізнають вони цей край, яким ви обри́дили.
32 But as for you, your corpses shall fall in this wilderness.	32 І ваші власні трупи попа́дають у цій пустині!
33 And your sons shall be shepherds forty years in this wilderness, and shall suffer for your whoredom until your corpses are consumed in this wilderness.	33 А ваші сини будуть блукати на пустині со́рок літ, і відповідатимуть за зраду вашу, аж поки ви́гинуть ваші трупи на пустині.

35 I the LORD have said, I will surely do it to all this evil congregation that are gathered together before me; in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.	35 Я, Господь, говорив: Поправді кажу, — оце зроблю́ всій цій злій громаді, що змовляється проти Мене: у цій пустині вигинуть, і тут повмирають“.
36 And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation murmur against him by publishing an evil report concerning the land,	36 А ті люди, яких Мойсей послав був розві́дати той край, коли вернулися, то зробили, що вся громада нарікала на нього, і пустили злу вістку на той край,
37 These men who published an evil report of the land died by a sudden plague before the LORD.	37 то ті люди, що пустили були злу вістку на той край, повмирали від пора́зи перед Господнім лицем.
38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jophaniah, who were of the men who went to spy out the land, still lived.	38 А Ісус, син Нави́нів, та Калев, син Єфуннеїв, жили́ з тих людей, що ходили розвідати той край.
39 And Moses told these sayings to all the children of Israel; and the people mourned greatly.	39 І говорив Мойсей ці слова́ до всіх Ізраїлевих синів, — і наро́д був у тяжкій жало́бі!

42 Do not go up, for the LORD is not with you; lest you be defeated before your enemies.	42 Не виходьте, бо Господь не серед вас, а то бу́дете побиті своїми ворогами.
43 For the Canaanites and the Amalekites are there before you, and you shall fall by the sword; because you are turned away from following the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.	43 Бо там перед вами амалики́тянин і ханаане́янин, і ви попа́даєте від меча, бо ви відвернулися від Господа, і не буде Господь із вами“.
44 Yet they started to go up to the top of the mountain; but neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses departed out of the camp.	44 Але вони осмі́лилися вийти на верхів'я гори, а ковче́г свідоцтва Господнього та Мойсей не ру́шилися з-посеред табо́ру.
