Chapter 14

1 THEN all the congregation was in commotion, and lifted up their voices and cried; and the people wept that night.

2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron; and the whole congregation said to them, Would God we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would God that we had died in this wilderness!

3 Why has the LORD brought us into this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and children should be a prey? We were better off when we dwelt in Egypt.

4 And they said one to another, Let us appoint a leader, and let us return to Egypt.

5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

6 And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jophaniah, who were of those who had spied out the land, rent their clothes;

7 And they said to all the congregation of the children of Israel, The land through which we passed to spy it out is an exceedingly good land.

8 If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land which flows indeed with milk and honey.

9 Only do not rebel against the LORD, neither be afraid of the people of the land; for their conquest will be as easy as eating bread; their strength has left them, and the LORD is with us; fear them not.

10 But the whole congregation said to stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.

11 And the LORD said to Moses, How long will this people provoke me? And how long will they not believe me, for all the signs which I have done among them?

12 I will smite them with pestilence, and destroy them, and I will make of you a nation which is greater and mightier than they.

13 And Moses said to the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it (for thou didst bring up this people in thy might from among them),

14 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land; for they have heard that thou LORD art in the midst of this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud stands over them, and that thou goest before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.

15 And if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations who have heard the fame of thee will say,

16 Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.

17 And now, let thy power, O LORD, be great according as thou hast spoken, saying,

18 The LORD is longsuffering and of great mercy, and thou forgivest iniquity and transgression, by no means clearing the guilty, but visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and upon their children's children to the third and fourth generation.

19 Pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven them from Egypt even until now.

20 And the LORD said to Moses, I have forgiven them according to your word;

21 But as truly as I live, the whole earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.

22 And yet all the men who have seen my glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness have tempted me, behold now, these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;

23 Surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any one of those who provoked me see it;

24 But my servant Caleb, because he has my spirit with him and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went; and his descendants shall possess it.

25 (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the mountains.) Tomorrow turn and set out for the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.

26 And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

27 How long shall this wicked congregation murmur in my presence? I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel which they murmur in my presence.

28 Say to them, As I live, says the LORD, as you have spoken in my presence, so will I do to you;

29 Your corpses shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, because you have murmured against me.

30 You shall not come into the land concerning which I swore to make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jophaniah, and Joshua the son of Nun.

31 But your little ones, who you said would become the prey, and your sons who today do not know good and evil, they shall enter into the land, and I will bring them there, and they shall know the land which you have despised.

32 But as for you, your corpses shall fall in this wilderness.

33 And your sons shall be shepherds forty years in this wilderness, and shall suffer for your whoredom until your corpses are consumed in this wilderness.

34 According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, a year for each day, shall you suffer for your iniquities, forty years; then you shall know that it is because you have murmured before me.

35 I the LORD have said, I will surely do it to all this evil congregation that are gathered together before me; in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.

36 And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation murmur against him by publishing an evil report concerning the land,

37 These men who published an evil report of the land died by a sudden plague before the LORD.

38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jophaniah, who were of the men who went to spy out the land, still lived.

39 And Moses told these sayings to all the children of Israel; and the people mourned greatly.

40 And they rose up early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, Behold, we will go up to the place which the LORD has promised us; for we have sinned.

41 And Moses said to them, Why now do you transgress the commandment of the LORD? Therefore you shall not succeed.

42 Do not go up, for the LORD is not with you; lest you be defeated before your enemies.

43 For the Canaanites and the Amalekites are there before you, and you shall fall by the sword; because you are turned away from following the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.

44 Yet they started to go up to the top of the mountain; but neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses departed out of the camp.

45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who dwelt in that mountain came down and smote them and pursued them as far as Hirmah.

1 Волнение охватило всю общину — кричали и плакали все в ту ночь.

2 Мятеж подняли сыны Израилевы против Моисея и Аарона, заявляя им: «Лучше бы умерли мы в Египте или в этой пустыне сгинули!

3 Зачем надо было ГОСПОДУ выводить нас в эту землю? Чтобы пасть нам от меча, а жены наши и дети малые военной добычей стали? Почему бы нам прямо сейчас же не вернуться в Египет?»

4 Дошло до того, что восставшие стали говорить между собой, что им надо выбрать себе другого предводителя и отправляться назад в Египет.

5 Моисей и Аарон пали ниц перед собравшейся общиной сынов Израилевых.

6 А Иисус Навин и Халев, сын Ефуннэ, оба из тех, кто сам видел землю ханаанскую, в сокрушении разодрали на себе одежды

7 и пытались вразумить всю общину сынов Израилевых: «Земля, через которую мы прошли, осматривая ее, прекрасна!

8 Если благоволит нам ГОСПОДЬ, введет Он нас в эту землю — землю, источающую молоко и мед, — и отдаст нам ее.

9 Только не восставайте против ГОСПОДА и не бойтесь людей той земли! Мы, как с куском хлеба, расправимся с ними. Нет у них никакой защиты: ГОСПОДЬ-то ведь с нами! Не бойтесь их!»

10 Но, не внимая словам Иисуса и Халева, вся община угрожала побить их камнями, когда вдруг на виду у всех сынов Израилевых слава ГОСПОДНЯ явила себя у Шатра Откровения.

11 ГОСПОДЬ сказал Моисею: «Доколе народ сей будет ни во что ставить Меня? До каких пор они не будут верить Мне, несмотря на все знамения, которые совершил Я среди них?

12 Нашлю на них моровое поветрие и откажусь от них. А от твоих потомков произведу народ многочисленнее и сильнее, чем они».

13 Тогда Моисей возразил ГОСПОДУ: «Но об этом услышат в Египте, откуда Ты вывел этот народ силою Своею,

14 и расскажут жителям этой страны, Ханаана. А они ведь тоже слышали уже, что Ты, ГОСПОДИ, в этом народе пребываешь и лицом к лицу являешь Себя ему, о ГОСПОДИ; облако Твое стоит над ними, и идешь Ты перед ними днем в столпе облачном, а ночью — в огненном.

15 И если Ты теперь одним ударом умертвишь их всех, тогда народы, которые слышали о славе Твоей, скажут:

16 „Не смог ГОСПОДЬ привести этих людей в землю, которую клятвенно им обещал, потому и погубил их в пустыне“.

17 Так пусть же ныне явится в величии своем сила Владыки моего, как Ты и провозглашал:

18 „ГОСПОДЬ долготерпеливый и великий в любви Своей неизменной, прощает Он беззаконие и преступление, не поступаясь, однако, справедливым наказанием виновных; Он и с детей взыскивает за грехи, что родители передают им до третьего и даже четвертого поколения, продолжающих отвергать Его“.

19 Прости же грех народу сему по величию любви Твоей неизменной, как Ты прощал ему до сих пор от самого ухода его из Египта».

20 И сказал ГОСПОДЬ: «Я простил их по просьбе твоей.

21 Но как верно то, что Я жив и что славою Моей вся земля наполнится,

22 так точно и ни один из тех, кто видел славу Мою и знамения Мои, которые творил Я в Египте и в пустыне, и кто, несмотря на это, вновь и вновь дерзко противился Мне, не прислушиваясь к гласу Моему,

23 никто из них не увидит той земли, что Я клятвенно обещал отцам их, ни один из тех, кто хулил Меня.

24 Только Халева, слугу Моего, — человека иного духа, полностью Мне преданного, — введу Я в землю, в которую он уже ходил, и потомки его унаследуют ее

25 (а пока в той долине живут амалекитяне и ханаанеи). Вы же завтра разворачивайтесь и направляйтесь в пустыню, по дороге к Красному морю».

26 При этом ГОСПОДЬ сказал Моисею и Аарону:

27 «Как долго будет продолжаться этот ропот против Меня людей, зла исполненных? От этих ропщущих израильтян довольно Я выслушал жалоб.

28 Скажи им: „Вас послушав, Я поступлю с вами по словам вашим, — говорит ГОСПОДЬ, — и это так же верно, как и то, что Я жив.

29 Эта пустыня будет усеяна трупами вашими — каждого из вас от двадцати лет и старше, включенных в перепись, — всех, кто роптал на Меня.

30 Никто из вас не войдет в ту землю, в которой вас поселить Я торжественно клялся, — никто, кроме Халева, сына Ефуннэ, и Иисуса Навина.

31 Но малых детей, о которых вы говорили, что военной добычей станут они, — их введу Я в землю, от которой вы отказались, и они ее узнают, узнают, как хороша она.

32 А что до прочих из вас — пустыня будет усеяна трупами вашими.

33 Дети ваши, словно пастухи с отарами, скитаться будут по пустыне сорок лет, страдая из-за неверности вашей, пока последний из вас не умрет.

34 По числу дней, в которые вы осматривали Ханаан, а их было сорок, — день за год, целых сорок лет будете страдать за свое нечестие и познаете, что значит идти Мне наперекор“.

35 Я, ГОСПОДЬ, изрек это и непременно так и сделаю с этой исполненной зла общиной, сговорившейся против Меня. Конец придет им в этой пустыне. Здесь умрут».

36 Те мужи, которых Моисей посылал осмотреть землю и которые, распространив о ней худую молву по возвращении своем, привели к ропоту против Моисея всю общину,

37 эти люди, говорившие худо о Земле обетованной, умерли пред ГОСПОДОМ — покарал Он их.

38 В живых остались только Иисус Навин и Халев, сын Ефуннэ, единственные из всех тех, кто осматривал землю.

39 Когда Моисей передал эти слова всем сынам Израилевым, они впали в великую скорбь.

40 А утром, встав рано, они уже собрались идти к хребту холмистого края, говоря: «Мы согрешили, однако теперь мы готовы идти в ту местность, о которой говорил ГОСПОДЬ».

41 Но Моисей сказал: «Зачем же преступаете повеление ГОСПОДНЕ?! Ничего хорошего из этого не выйдет.

42 Не начинайте наступления, ибо нет с вами ГОСПОДА, — разобьют вас враги ваши.

43 Перед вами ведь амалекитяне и ханаанеи, и вы падете от меча, потому что отвернулись от ГОСПОДА и не будет Его с вами».

44 Но они в своей самонадеянности отправились к хребту холмистого края. (А ковчег Завета ГОСПОДНЯ и Моисей оставались в стане.)

45 Жившие на тех холмах амалекитяне и ханаанеи сошли вниз и, нанеся им сокрушительное поражение, гнали их до Хормы.

2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron; and the whole congregation said to them, Would God we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would God that we had died in this wilderness!	2 Мятеж подняли сыны Израилевы против Моисея и Аарона, заявляя им: «Лучше бы умерли мы в Египте или в этой пустыне сгинули!
3 Why has the LORD brought us into this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and children should be a prey? We were better off when we dwelt in Egypt.	3 Зачем надо было ГОСПОДУ выводить нас в эту землю? Чтобы пасть нам от меча, а жены наши и дети малые военной добычей стали? Почему бы нам прямо сейчас же не вернуться в Египет?»
4 And they said one to another, Let us appoint a leader, and let us return to Egypt.	4 Дошло до того, что восставшие стали говорить между собой, что им надо выбрать себе другого предводителя и отправляться назад в Египет.

6 And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jophaniah, who were of those who had spied out the land, rent their clothes;	6 А Иисус Навин и Халев, сын Ефуннэ, оба из тех, кто сам видел землю ханаанскую, в сокрушении разодрали на себе одежды
7 And they said to all the congregation of the children of Israel, The land through which we passed to spy it out is an exceedingly good land.	7 и пытались вразумить всю общину сынов Израилевых: «Земля, через которую мы прошли, осматривая ее, прекрасна!
8 If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land which flows indeed with milk and honey.	8 Если благоволит нам ГОСПОДЬ, введет Он нас в эту землю — землю, источающую молоко и мед, — и отдаст нам ее.

10 But the whole congregation said to stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.	10 Но, не внимая словам Иисуса и Халева, вся община угрожала побить их камнями, когда вдруг на виду у всех сынов Израилевых слава ГОСПОДНЯ явила себя у Шатра Откровения.
11 And the LORD said to Moses, How long will this people provoke me? And how long will they not believe me, for all the signs which I have done among them?	11 ГОСПОДЬ сказал Моисею: «Доколе народ сей будет ни во что ставить Меня? До каких пор они не будут верить Мне, несмотря на все знамения, которые совершил Я среди них?
12 I will smite them with pestilence, and destroy them, and I will make of you a nation which is greater and mightier than they.	12 Нашлю на них моровое поветрие и откажусь от них. А от твоих потомков произведу народ многочисленнее и сильнее, чем они».

А они ведь тоже слышали уже, что Ты, ГОСПОДИ, в этом народе пребываешь и лицом к лицу являешь Себя ему, о ГОСПОДИ; облако Твое стоит над ними, и идешь Ты перед ними днем в столпе облачном, а ночью — в огненном.
15 And if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations who have heard the fame of thee will say,	15 И если Ты теперь одним ударом умертвишь их всех, тогда народы, которые слышали о славе Твоей, скажут:
16 Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.	16 „Не смог ГОСПОДЬ привести этих людей в землю, которую клятвенно им обещал, потому и погубил их в пустыне“.
17 And now, let thy power, O LORD, be great according as thou hast spoken, saying,	17 Так пусть же ныне явится в величии своем сила Владыки моего, как Ты и провозглашал:
18 The LORD is longsuffering and of great mercy, and thou forgivest iniquity and transgression, by no means clearing the guilty, but visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and upon their children's children to the third and fourth generation.	18 „ГОСПОДЬ долготерпеливый и великий в любви Своей неизменной, прощает Он беззаконие и преступление, не поступаясь, однако, справедливым наказанием виновных; Он и с детей взыскивает за грехи, что родители передают им до третьего и даже четвертого поколения, продолжающих отвергать Его“.
19 Pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven them from Egypt even until now.	19 Прости же грех народу сему по величию любви Твоей неизменной, как Ты прощал ему до сих пор от самого ухода его из Египта».
20 And the LORD said to Moses, I have forgiven them according to your word;	20 И сказал ГОСПОДЬ: «Я простил их по просьбе твоей.
21 But as truly as I live, the whole earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.	21 Но как верно то, что Я жив и что славою Моей вся земля наполнится,
22 And yet all the men who have seen my glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness have tempted me, behold now, these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;	22 так точно и ни один из тех, кто видел славу Мою и знамения Мои, которые творил Я в Египте и в пустыне, и кто, несмотря на это, вновь и вновь дерзко противился Мне, не прислушиваясь к гласу Моему,
23 Surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any one of those who provoked me see it;	23 никто из них не увидит той земли, что Я клятвенно обещал отцам их, ни один из тех, кто хулил Меня.
24 But my servant Caleb, because he has my spirit with him and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went; and his descendants shall possess it.	24 Только Халева, слугу Моего, — человека иного духа, полностью Мне преданного, — введу Я в землю, в которую он уже ходил, и потомки его унаследуют ее
25 (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the mountains.) Tomorrow turn and set out for the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.	25 (а пока в той долине живут амалекитяне и ханаанеи). Вы же завтра разворачивайтесь и направляйтесь в пустыню, по дороге к Красному морю».
26 And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,	26 При этом ГОСПОДЬ сказал Моисею и Аарону:
27 How long shall this wicked congregation murmur in my presence? I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel which they murmur in my presence.	27 «Как долго будет продолжаться этот ропот против Меня людей, зла исполненных? От этих ропщущих израильтян довольно Я выслушал жалоб.
28 Say to them, As I live, says the LORD, as you have spoken in my presence, so will I do to you;	28 Скажи им: „Вас послушав, Я поступлю с вами по словам вашим, — говорит ГОСПОДЬ, — и это так же верно, как и то, что Я жив.
29 Your corpses shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, because you have murmured against me.	29 Эта пустыня будет усеяна трупами вашими — каждого из вас от двадцати лет и старше, включенных в перепись, — всех, кто роптал на Меня.
30 You shall not come into the land concerning which I swore to make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jophaniah, and Joshua the son of Nun.	30 Никто из вас не войдет в ту землю, в которой вас поселить Я торжественно клялся, — никто, кроме Халева, сына Ефуннэ, и Иисуса Навина.
31 But your little ones, who you said would become the prey, and your sons who today do not know good and evil, they shall enter into the land, and I will bring them there, and they shall know the land which you have despised.	31 Но малых детей, о которых вы говорили, что военной добычей станут они, — их введу Я в землю, от которой вы отказались, и они ее узнают, узнают, как хороша она.
32 But as for you, your corpses shall fall in this wilderness.	32 А что до прочих из вас — пустыня будет усеяна трупами вашими.
33 And your sons shall be shepherds forty years in this wilderness, and shall suffer for your whoredom until your corpses are consumed in this wilderness.	33 Дети ваши, словно пастухи с отарами, скитаться будут по пустыне сорок лет, страдая из-за неверности вашей, пока последний из вас не умрет.

35 I the LORD have said, I will surely do it to all this evil congregation that are gathered together before me; in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.	35 Я, ГОСПОДЬ, изрек это и непременно так и сделаю с этой исполненной зла общиной, сговорившейся против Меня. Конец придет им в этой пустыне. Здесь умрут».
36 And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation murmur against him by publishing an evil report concerning the land,	36 Те мужи, которых Моисей посылал осмотреть землю и которые, распространив о ней худую молву по возвращении своем, привели к ропоту против Моисея всю общину,
37 These men who published an evil report of the land died by a sudden plague before the LORD.	37 эти люди, говорившие худо о Земле обетованной, умерли пред ГОСПОДОМ — покарал Он их.
38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jophaniah, who were of the men who went to spy out the land, still lived.	38 В живых остались только Иисус Навин и Халев, сын Ефуннэ, единственные из всех тех, кто осматривал землю.
39 And Moses told these sayings to all the children of Israel; and the people mourned greatly.	39 Когда Моисей передал эти слова всем сынам Израилевым, они впали в великую скорбь.

41 And Moses said to them, Why now do you transgress the commandment of the LORD? Therefore you shall not succeed.	41 Но Моисей сказал: «Зачем же преступаете повеление ГОСПОДНЕ?! Ничего хорошего из этого не выйдет.
42 Do not go up, for the LORD is not with you; lest you be defeated before your enemies.	42 Не начинайте наступления, ибо нет с вами ГОСПОДА, — разобьют вас враги ваши.
43 For the Canaanites and the Amalekites are there before you, and you shall fall by the sword; because you are turned away from following the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.	43 Перед вами ведь амалекитяне и ханаанеи, и вы падете от меча, потому что отвернулись от ГОСПОДА и не будет Его с вами».
44 Yet they started to go up to the top of the mountain; but neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses departed out of the camp.	44 Но они в своей самонадеянности отправились к хребту холмистого края. (А ковчег Завета ГОСПОДНЯ и Моисей оставались в стане.)
45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who dwelt in that mountain came down and smote them and pursued them as far as Hirmah.	45 Жившие на тех холмах амалекитяне и ханаанеи сошли вниз и, нанеся им сокрушительное поражение, гнали их до Хормы.
