Chapter 16

1 AND they journeyed from Elim, and the whole congregation of the children of Israel came to the wilderness of Seen, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt.

2 And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness;

3 And the children of Israel said to them, Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, and when we did eat bread to the full; for you have brought us forth into this wilderness to destroy the whole assembly of Israel with hunger.

4 Then the LORD said to Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather sufficient food, day by day, for I will prove them, whether they will keep my laws or not.

5 And it shall come to pass that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.

6 And Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel, At evening, then you shall know that the LORD has brought you out from the land of Egypt;

7 And in the morning, then you shall see the glory of the LORD; for your murmuring has been heard before the LORD; but as for us, what are we that you should murmur against us?

8 And Moses said, When the LORD shall give you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, then the LORD has heard your murmuring which you murmured against him; but as for us, what are we? Your murmurings are not against us but against the LORD.

9 And Moses said to Aaron, Say to all the congregation of the children of Israel, Come near before the LORD; for he has heard your murmurings.

10 And it came to pass, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, they turned their faces toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud.

11 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying.

12 I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel; say to them, At evening you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and you shall know that I am the LORD your God.

13 And it came to pass that at evening the quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning the dew lay round about the camp.

14 And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a thin round crust, like the hoar frost on the ground.

15 And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, Manna-ho? (What is it?) For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, This is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat.

16 This is the thing which the LORD has commanded, Gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer for every man, according to the number of your persons; each man shall take it for those in his tent.

17 And the children of Israel did so, and gathered, some more, some less.

18 And when they measured it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.

19 And Moses said to them, Let no man leave of it till the morning.

20 Notwithstanding they listened not to Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms and stank; and Moses was angry with them.

21 And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating; and when the sun grew hot, it melted.

22 And it came to pass that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one person; and all the elders of the congregation came and told Moses.

23 Moses said to them, This is what the LORD has said, Tomorrow is a day of holy rest, a sabbath to the LORD; bake that which you will bake today, and cook what you will cook; and that which is left over, keep it cold for yourselves until the morning.

24 So they left over some of it till the morning, as Moses had commanded them; and it did not stink, neither was there any worm in it.

25 And Moses said to them, Eat it today; for today is a sabbath to the LORD; today you shall not find it in the field.

26 Six days you shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.

27 And it came to pass that there went out some of the people on the seventh day to gather, and they found none.

28 And the LORD said to Moses, How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws?

29 See, for the LORD has given you the sabbath, therefore he gives you on the sixth day bread for two days; abide every man in his place; let no man go out of his house on the seventh day.

30 So the people rested on the seventh day.

31 And the children of Israel called the name thereof manna; and it was like coriander seed, white; and the taste of it was like honeycomb.

32 And Moses said, This is the thing which the LORD has commanded, Fill an omer to be kept for your generations, that they may see the bread with which I have fed you in the wilderness when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt.

33 And Moses said to Aaron, Take a pot, and put an omer full of manna therein, and lay it before the LORD, to be kept for your generations.

34 As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up as a testimony, to be kept.

35 And the children of Israel did eat manna for forty years until they came to an inhabited land; they did eat manna until they reached the border of the land of Canaan.

36 Now an omer is the tenth of an ephah.

2 І стала ре́мствувати вся громада Ізраїлевих синів на Мойсея та на Аарона в пустині.

3 І говорили їм Ізраїлеві сини: „Коли б ми були повмирали від Господньої руки в єгипетськім кра́ї, як ми сиділи над горшком м'яса, як ми їли хліба до́сить! Бо ви вивели нас до цієї пустині, щоб поморити голодом увесь цей збір“.

4 І промовив Господь до Мойсея: „Ось Я спускатиму вам дощем хліб із неба, а наро́д вихо́дитиме й щоденно збиратиме, скільки треба на день, щоб ви́пробувати його, чи буде він ходити в Моєму Зако́ні, чи ні.

5 А настане шостий день, то приготують, що принесу́ть, і буде подвійне супроти того, що збирають день-у-день “.

6 І сказали Мойсей та Аарон до всіх Ізраїлевих синів: „Настане вечір — і ви довідаєтеся, що Господь вивів вас із єгипетського кра́ю.

7 А настане ра́нок, то побачите славу Господню, бо Він почув ваші ре́мствування на Господа. А ми що́, що ви ре́мствуєте на нас?“

8 І сказав Мойсей: „Довідаєтесь, як увечорі Господь дасть вам м'яса на їжу, а рано хліба на наси́чення, бо почув Господь ре́мствування ваші, що ви ре́мствуєте на Нього. А ми́ що? Не на нас ре́мствування ваше, а на Господа!“

9 І сказав Мойсей до Аарона: „Скажи всій громаді Ізраїлевих синів: Наблизьтеся перед лице Господа, бо Він почув ваші ре́мствування!“

10 І сталося, коли говорив Аарон до всієї громади Ізраїлевих синів, то обернулися вони до пустині, — аж ось слава Господня показалася в хмарі!

11 І промовив Господь до Мойсея, говорячи:

12 „Я почув ре́мствування Ізраїлевих синів. Промовляй до них, кажучи: Під вечір бу́дете їсти м'ясо, а рано наси́титесь хлібом, — і познаєте, що Я — Господь, Бог ваш!“

13 І сталося ввечорі, і зняли́ся перепели́ці, і покрили та́бір. А рано була верства́ роси навколо табо́ру.

14 І підняла́ся верства́ тієї роси, — аж ось на пове́рхні пустині щось дрі́бне, вузькувате, дрібне, немов па́морозь на землі.

15 І побачили Ізраїлеві сини, та й казали один до одного: „Ман гу?“, бо не знали, що́ то. А Мойсей відказав їм: „Це той хліб, що дав вам Господь на їжу.

16 Це те, що про нього Господь наказав: Збирайте з нього кожен у міру їди́ своєї, го́мер на голову, за числом ваших душ: візьміть кожен для того, хто в наме́ті його.

17 I зробили так Ізраїлеві сини, і назбирали хто більше, а хто менше.

18 І зміряли вони гомером, — і не мав зайвого той, хто зібрав більше, а хто зібрав менше, не мав нестачі, — зібрали кожен у міру своєї їди́!

19 І сказав до них Мойсей: „Нехай ніхто не лишає з ньо́го до ра́нку!“

20 Та не послухали вони Мойсея, і дехто позоставля́ли з нього до ранку, а воно зачерви́віло, і стало смердюче. І розгнівався на них Мойсей!

21 І збирали його щора́нку, кожен у міру своєї їди. А розгрівалося сонце — і воно розтавало.

22 І сталося шостого дня, — поназби́рували вони хліба подвійно, два гомери на одного. І посхо́дилися всі начальники громади, і розповіли Мойсеєві.

23 А він сказав до них: „Це те, що говорив Господь: Повний спокій, субота свята для Господа взавтра. Що бу́дете пекти — печіть, а що бу́дете варити — варіть, а все позостале покладіть собі на схо́вок до ра́нку“.

24 І поклали його аж до ранку, як Мойсей наказав, і не засмерділось воно, і черви́ не було в нім.

25 І сказав Мойсей: „Їжте його сьогодні, бо сьогодні субота для Господа. Сьогодні не зна́йдете його на полі.

26 Шість день будете збирати його, а дня сьомого — субота: не бу́де в ній того“.

27 І сталося сьо́мого дня, повихо́дили були з наро́ду збирати, та не знайшли.

28 І сказав Господь до Мойсея: „Аж доки ви будете відмовлятися виконувати заповіді Мої та зако́ни Мої?

29 Побачте, — Господь дав вам суботу, тому Він дає вам шостого дня хліба двох днів. Сидіть кожен у себе, — нехай сьомого дня не виходить ніхто з свого місця!“

30 І сьомого дня наро́д відпочивав.

31 І назвав Ізраїлів дім ім'я́ тому: ма́нна. Вона була́, як коріяндрове насі́ння, біла, а смак її, — як тісто в меду.

32 І сказав Мойсей: „Оце те, що наказав Господь: Напо́вни нею го́мер на схо́вок для ваших поколінь, щоб бачили той хліб, яким Я годував вас на пустині, коли Я виводив вас із єгипетського кра́ю“.

33 І сказав Мойсей до Аарона: „Візьми одну посу́дину, і поклади туди повний го́мер ма́нни, і постав її перед Господнім лицем на схо́вок для ваших поколінь“.

34 І як наказав Бог Мойсею, так поставив її Аарон перед ковчегом свідоцтва на сховок.

35 А Ізраїлеві сини їли ту манну сорок літ, аж до прибуття́ їх до краю заселеного, їли манну аж до прихо́ду їх до границі ханаанського кра́ю.

36 А го́мер — він десята частина ефи.

2 And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness;

2 І стала ре́мствувати вся громада Ізраїлевих синів на Мойсея та на Аарона в пустині.

3 And the children of Israel said to them, Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, and when we did eat bread to the full; for you have brought us forth into this wilderness to destroy the whole assembly of Israel with hunger.

3 І говорили їм Ізраїлеві сини: „Коли б ми були повмирали від Господньої руки в єгипетськім кра́ї, як ми сиділи над горшком м'яса, як ми їли хліба до́сить! Бо ви вивели нас до цієї пустині, щоб поморити голодом увесь цей збір“.

4 Then the LORD said to Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather sufficient food, day by day, for I will prove them, whether they will keep my laws or not.

4 І промовив Господь до Мойсея: „Ось Я спускатиму вам дощем хліб із неба, а наро́д вихо́дитиме й щоденно збиратиме, скільки треба на день, щоб ви́пробувати його, чи буде він ходити в Моєму Зако́ні, чи ні.

5 And it shall come to pass that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.

5 А настане шостий день, то приготують, що принесу́ть, і буде подвійне супроти того, що збирають день-у-день “.

6 And Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel, At evening, then you shall know that the LORD has brought you out from the land of Egypt;

6 І сказали Мойсей та Аарон до всіх Ізраїлевих синів: „Настане вечір — і ви довідаєтеся, що Господь вивів вас із єгипетського кра́ю.

7 And in the morning, then you shall see the glory of the LORD; for your murmuring has been heard before the LORD; but as for us, what are we that you should murmur against us?

7 А настане ра́нок, то побачите славу Господню, бо Він почув ваші ре́мствування на Господа. А ми що́, що ви ре́мствуєте на нас?“

8 And Moses said, When the LORD shall give you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, then the LORD has heard your murmuring which you murmured against him; but as for us, what are we? Your murmurings are not against us but against the LORD.

8 І сказав Мойсей: „Довідаєтесь, як увечорі Господь дасть вам м'яса на їжу, а рано хліба на наси́чення, бо почув Господь ре́мствування ваші, що ви ре́мствуєте на Нього. А ми́ що? Не на нас ре́мствування ваше, а на Господа!“

9 And Moses said to Aaron, Say to all the congregation of the children of Israel, Come near before the LORD; for he has heard your murmurings.

9 І сказав Мойсей до Аарона: „Скажи всій громаді Ізраїлевих синів: Наблизьтеся перед лице Господа, бо Він почув ваші ре́мствування!“

10 And it came to pass, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, they turned their faces toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud.

10 І сталося, коли говорив Аарон до всієї громади Ізраїлевих синів, то обернулися вони до пустині, — аж ось слава Господня показалася в хмарі!

11 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying.

11 І промовив Господь до Мойсея, говорячи:

12 I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel; say to them, At evening you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and you shall know that I am the LORD your God.

12 „Я почув ре́мствування Ізраїлевих синів. Промовляй до них, кажучи: Під вечір бу́дете їсти м'ясо, а рано наси́титесь хлібом, — і познаєте, що Я — Господь, Бог ваш!“

13 And it came to pass that at evening the quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning the dew lay round about the camp.

13 І сталося ввечорі, і зняли́ся перепели́ці, і покрили та́бір. А рано була верства́ роси навколо табо́ру.

14 And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a thin round crust, like the hoar frost on the ground.

14 І підняла́ся верства́ тієї роси, — аж ось на пове́рхні пустині щось дрі́бне, вузькувате, дрібне, немов па́морозь на землі.

15 And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, Manna-ho? (What is it?) For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, This is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat.

15 І побачили Ізраїлеві сини, та й казали один до одного: „Ман гу?“, бо не знали, що́ то. А Мойсей відказав їм: „Це той хліб, що дав вам Господь на їжу.

16 This is the thing which the LORD has commanded, Gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer for every man, according to the number of your persons; each man shall take it for those in his tent.

16 Це те, що про нього Господь наказав: Збирайте з нього кожен у міру їди́ своєї, го́мер на голову, за числом ваших душ: візьміть кожен для того, хто в наме́ті його.

17 And the children of Israel did so, and gathered, some more, some less.

17 I зробили так Ізраїлеві сини, і назбирали хто більше, а хто менше.

18 And when they measured it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.

18 І зміряли вони гомером, — і не мав зайвого той, хто зібрав більше, а хто зібрав менше, не мав нестачі, — зібрали кожен у міру своєї їди́!

19 And Moses said to them, Let no man leave of it till the morning.

19 І сказав до них Мойсей: „Нехай ніхто не лишає з ньо́го до ра́нку!“

20 Notwithstanding they listened not to Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms and stank; and Moses was angry with them.

20 Та не послухали вони Мойсея, і дехто позоставля́ли з нього до ранку, а воно зачерви́віло, і стало смердюче. І розгнівався на них Мойсей!

21 And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating; and when the sun grew hot, it melted.

21 І збирали його щора́нку, кожен у міру своєї їди. А розгрівалося сонце — і воно розтавало.

22 And it came to pass that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one person; and all the elders of the congregation came and told Moses.

22 І сталося шостого дня, — поназби́рували вони хліба подвійно, два гомери на одного. І посхо́дилися всі начальники громади, і розповіли Мойсеєві.

23 Moses said to them, This is what the LORD has said, Tomorrow is a day of holy rest, a sabbath to the LORD; bake that which you will bake today, and cook what you will cook; and that which is left over, keep it cold for yourselves until the morning.

23 А він сказав до них: „Це те, що говорив Господь: Повний спокій, субота свята для Господа взавтра. Що бу́дете пекти — печіть, а що бу́дете варити — варіть, а все позостале покладіть собі на схо́вок до ра́нку“.

24 So they left over some of it till the morning, as Moses had commanded them; and it did not stink, neither was there any worm in it.

24 І поклали його аж до ранку, як Мойсей наказав, і не засмерділось воно, і черви́ не було в нім.

25 And Moses said to them, Eat it today; for today is a sabbath to the LORD; today you shall not find it in the field.

25 І сказав Мойсей: „Їжте його сьогодні, бо сьогодні субота для Господа. Сьогодні не зна́йдете його на полі.

26 Six days you shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.

26 Шість день будете збирати його, а дня сьомого — субота: не бу́де в ній того“.

27 And it came to pass that there went out some of the people on the seventh day to gather, and they found none.

27 І сталося сьо́мого дня, повихо́дили були з наро́ду збирати, та не знайшли.

28 And the LORD said to Moses, How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws?

28 І сказав Господь до Мойсея: „Аж доки ви будете відмовлятися виконувати заповіді Мої та зако́ни Мої?

29 See, for the LORD has given you the sabbath, therefore he gives you on the sixth day bread for two days; abide every man in his place; let no man go out of his house on the seventh day.

29 Побачте, — Господь дав вам суботу, тому Він дає вам шостого дня хліба двох днів. Сидіть кожен у себе, — нехай сьомого дня не виходить ніхто з свого місця!“

30 So the people rested on the seventh day.

30 І сьомого дня наро́д відпочивав.

31 And the children of Israel called the name thereof manna; and it was like coriander seed, white; and the taste of it was like honeycomb.

31 І назвав Ізраїлів дім ім'я́ тому: ма́нна. Вона була́, як коріяндрове насі́ння, біла, а смак її, — як тісто в меду.

32 And Moses said, This is the thing which the LORD has commanded, Fill an omer to be kept for your generations, that they may see the bread with which I have fed you in the wilderness when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt.

32 І сказав Мойсей: „Оце те, що наказав Господь: Напо́вни нею го́мер на схо́вок для ваших поколінь, щоб бачили той хліб, яким Я годував вас на пустині, коли Я виводив вас із єгипетського кра́ю“.

33 And Moses said to Aaron, Take a pot, and put an omer full of manna therein, and lay it before the LORD, to be kept for your generations.

33 І сказав Мойсей до Аарона: „Візьми одну посу́дину, і поклади туди повний го́мер ма́нни, і постав її перед Господнім лицем на схо́вок для ваших поколінь“.

34 As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up as a testimony, to be kept.

34 І як наказав Бог Мойсею, так поставив її Аарон перед ковчегом свідоцтва на сховок.

35 And the children of Israel did eat manna for forty years until they came to an inhabited land; they did eat manna until they reached the border of the land of Canaan.

35 А Ізраїлеві сини їли ту манну сорок літ, аж до прибуття́ їх до краю заселеного, їли манну аж до прихо́ду їх до границі ханаанського кра́ю.

36 Now an omer is the tenth of an ephah.
