Chapter 38

1 THEN Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken to all the people, saying,

2 Thus says the LORD: He who remains in this city shall die by sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he who goes forth to the Chaldeans shall live: and shall save his life.

3 Thus says the LORD, This city shall surely be delivered into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, which shall take it.

4 Then the princes said to the king, Let this man be put to death; for it is he who is weakening the hands of the men of war who remain in this city and the hands of all the people in speaking such words to them; for this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

5 Then King Zedekiah said, Behold, he is in your hands; for the king cannot say anything to you.

6 Then they took Jeremiah and cast him into the well of Malchiah the son of the king, which was in the court of the prison; and they let down Jeremiah with ropes. And there was no water in the well, but only mire; so Jeremiah sank in the mire.

7 Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the well, the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin;

8 So Ebed-melech went forth out of the king's house and spoke to the king, saying,

9 My Lord, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, for they have cast him into the well; and, behold, he will die of hunger, for there is no more bread in the city.

10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from here thirty men with you, and go and draw up Jeremiah out of the well before he dies.

11 So Ebed-melech the Ethiopian took the men with him from the king's house, and went into the treasury which is below the palace and took from there some worn out towels and rags, and lowered them down by a rope into the well to Jeremiah.

12 And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, Put these old towels and rags under your armpits under the rope. And Jeremiah did so.

13 So they drew up Jeremiah with the rope, and took him up out of the well; and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

14 Then King Zedekiah sent and took Jeremiah the prophet to him into the third entry that is in the house of the LORD; and the king said to Jeremiah, I will ask you a question, hide not a word from me.

15 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, If I tell you, behold, you will surely put me to death; and if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.

16 So King Zedekiah swore secretly to Jeremiah in the palace, saying, As the LORD lives, who created soul in us, I will not put you to death, neither will I deliver you into the hand of these men who seek your life.

17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: If you will go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then you will spare your life, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and you and your household shall live;

18 But if you do not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then this city shall be delivered into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape from their hands.

19 And King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, I am afraid, because of the Jews, to go forth to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hands and they mock me.

20 But Jeremiah said, They will not deliver you. Obey the word of the LORD, which I speak to you; so it shall be well with you, and your life shall be saved.

21 But if you refuse to go forth, this is the word that the LORD has shown me:

22 Behold, all the women who are left in the king of Judah's house shall go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, and those women shall say, Your friends have deceived you and have prevailed against you; yea, they have caused your feet to sink in the mire, and they have turned away from you.

23 So they shall bring out all your wives and your children to the Chaldeans; and you yourself shall not escape from their hands, but shall be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon; and this city shall be burned with fire.

24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words and you shall not die.

25 But if the princes hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you and say to you, Declare to us now what you said to the king and what the king said to you, hide nothing from us and we will not put you to death;

26 Then you shall say to them, I was beseeching the king that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house to die there.

27 Then came all the princes to Jeremiah and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded him. So they ceased conversing with him because the matter was not made known.

28 So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison house until the day that Jerusalem was taken.

1 И услышали Шефатия, сын Матфана, и Гедалия, сын Пашхура, и Юхал, сын Шелемии, и Пашхур, сын Малхии, слова, которыми Иеремия беседовал с народом, говоря:

2 Так говорит Иегова: остающийся в сем городе умрет от меча, голода и язвы, а вышедший к халдеям будет жив, и душа его будет ему вместо добычи, и он останется жив.

3 Так говорит Иегова: непременно предан будет город сей в руки войска царя вавилонского, и он возьмет его.

4 И сказали князья царю: да будет умерщвлен человек сей за то, что ослабляет руки воинов, остающихся в сем городе, и руки всего народа, говоря им такие слова: ибо человек сей не добра желает народу сему, а зла.

5 И сказал царь Седекия: вот он в ваших руках, потому что царь ничего вопреки вам не может сделать.

6 И взяли Иеремию, и бросили его в яму Малхии, сына Мелехова, которая была во дворе стражи, и опустили Иеремию на веревках (а в яме той воды не было, а только грязь), и погряз Иеремия в грязи.

7 И услышал Еведмелех, ефиоплянин, евнух, бывший в царском доме, что Иеремию посадили в яму; царь же сидел тогда у ворот Вениаминовых.

8 И пошел Еведмелех из дому царского, и говорил царю:

9 Государь мой царь! все худое сделали эти люди, так поступив с Иеремиею пророком, которого бросили в яму; и он в подземелье умрет от голода, потому что уже нет хлеба в городе.

10 Царь дал приказание Еведмелеху ефиоплянину, сказав: возьми с собою отсюда тридцать человек, и вытащи Иеремию пророка из ямы, пока он не умер.

11 И взял Еведмелех людей тех с собою, и пошел в дом царский под кладовую, и набрал оттуда лоскутьев изношенного и изодранного платья, и опустил их в яму к Иеремии на веревках.

12 И сказал Еведмелех ефиоплянин Иеремии: подложи эти лоскутья изношенного и изодранного платья под мышки рук твоих, под веревки; и сделал так Иеремия.

13 И потащили Иеремию на веревках, и вытащили его из ямы; и остался Иеремия во дворе стражи.

14 И послал царь Седекия, и взял Иеремию пророка к себе, к третьему входу в дом Иеговы; и сказал царь Иеремии: спрошу я у тебя слова; не скрой от меня ни слова.

15 И сказал Иеремия Седекии: когда я открою тебе, не умертвишь ли меня тогда? и когда дам тебе совет, ты не послушаешь меня.

16 И клялся царь Седекия Иеремии тайно, говоря: жив Иегова, который сотворил нам душу сию, не умерщвлю тебя, и не отдам тебя в руки людей сих, которые ищут души твоей.

17 И сказал Иеремия Седекии: так говорит Иегова, Бог воинств, Бог Израилев: если поспешишь выйти к князьям царя вавилонского; то душа твоя будет жива, и город сей не будет сожжен огнем; останешься жив, и ты, и дом твой.

18 А если не выйдешь к князьям царя вавилонского; то город сей будет предан в руки халдеев, и они сожгут его огнем, и ты не спасешься от руки их.

19 И сказал царь Седекия Иеремии: я боюсь иудеев, которые передались к халдеям; может быть, сии выдадут меня и руки их, и они наругаются надо мною.

20 И сказал Иеремия: не выдадут, послушай гласа Иеговы в том, что я говорю тебе; и хорошо тебе будет, и жива будет душа твоя.

21 А если ты не хочешь выйти, то вот слово, которое открыл мне Иегова:

22 И вот все жены, которые остались в доме царя иудейского, отведены будут к князьям царя вавилонского, и скажут они: `обольстили тебя, одолели тебя люди мира твоего, погрязли в болоте ноги твои, а они ушли назад`,

23 И всех жен твоих и сыновей твоих отведут к халдеям, и ты не спасешься от руки их; но будешь взят и предан в руку царя вавилонского и город сей сожжешь огнем.

24 И сказал Седекия Иеремии: чтоб никто не знал слов сих; и не умрешь.

25 И если услышат князья, что я разговаривал с тобою, и придут к тебе, и скажут тебе: `скажи нам, что говорил ты царю, не скрой от нас, и мы тебя не умертвим, и что тебе говорил царь`?

26 То скажи им: я повергнул пред лице царя прошение мое, чтоб он не возвратил меня в дом Ионафана, дабы я умер там.

27 И пришли все князья к Иеремии, и стали спрашивать его, и он сказал им все те слова, какие царь велел сказать, и оставили его в покое, потому что не слышно было ни слова.

28 И сидел Иеремия во дворе стражи до того дня, когда был взят Иерусалим.

3 Так говорит Иегова: непременно предан будет город сей в руки войска царя вавилонского, и он возьмет его.

4 Then the princes said to the king, Let this man be put to death; for it is he who is weakening the hands of the men of war who remain in this city and the hands of all the people in speaking such words to them; for this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

4 И сказали князья царю: да будет умерщвлен человек сей за то, что ослабляет руки воинов, остающихся в сем городе, и руки всего народа, говоря им такие слова: ибо человек сей не добра желает народу сему, а зла.

5 Then King Zedekiah said, Behold, he is in your hands; for the king cannot say anything to you.

5 И сказал царь Седекия: вот он в ваших руках, потому что царь ничего вопреки вам не может сделать.

6 Then they took Jeremiah and cast him into the well of Malchiah the son of the king, which was in the court of the prison; and they let down Jeremiah with ropes. And there was no water in the well, but only mire; so Jeremiah sank in the mire.

6 И взяли Иеремию, и бросили его в яму Малхии, сына Мелехова, которая была во дворе стражи, и опустили Иеремию на веревках (а в яме той воды не было, а только грязь), и погряз Иеремия в грязи.

7 Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the well, the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin;

7 И услышал Еведмелех, ефиоплянин, евнух, бывший в царском доме, что Иеремию посадили в яму; царь же сидел тогда у ворот Вениаминовых.

8 So Ebed-melech went forth out of the king's house and spoke to the king, saying,

8 И пошел Еведмелех из дому царского, и говорил царю:

9 My Lord, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, for they have cast him into the well; and, behold, he will die of hunger, for there is no more bread in the city.

9 Государь мой царь! все худое сделали эти люди, так поступив с Иеремиею пророком, которого бросили в яму; и он в подземелье умрет от голода, потому что уже нет хлеба в городе.

10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from here thirty men with you, and go and draw up Jeremiah out of the well before he dies.

10 Царь дал приказание Еведмелеху ефиоплянину, сказав: возьми с собою отсюда тридцать человек, и вытащи Иеремию пророка из ямы, пока он не умер.

16 И клялся царь Седекия Иеремии тайно, говоря: жив Иегова, который сотворил нам душу сию, не умерщвлю тебя, и не отдам тебя в руки людей сих, которые ищут души твоей.

17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: If you will go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then you will spare your life, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and you and your household shall live;

17 И сказал Иеремия Седекии: так говорит Иегова, Бог воинств, Бог Израилев: если поспешишь выйти к князьям царя вавилонского; то душа твоя будет жива, и город сей не будет сожжен огнем; останешься жив, и ты, и дом твой.

18 But if you do not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then this city shall be delivered into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape from their hands.

18 А если не выйдешь к князьям царя вавилонского; то город сей будет предан в руки халдеев, и они сожгут его огнем, и ты не спасешься от руки их.

19 And King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, I am afraid, because of the Jews, to go forth to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hands and they mock me.

19 И сказал царь Седекия Иеремии: я боюсь иудеев, которые передались к халдеям; может быть, сии выдадут меня и руки их, и они наругаются надо мною.

20 But Jeremiah said, They will not deliver you. Obey the word of the LORD, which I speak to you; so it shall be well with you, and your life shall be saved.

20 И сказал Иеремия: не выдадут, послушай гласа Иеговы в том, что я говорю тебе; и хорошо тебе будет, и жива будет душа твоя.

21 But if you refuse to go forth, this is the word that the LORD has shown me:

21 А если ты не хочешь выйти, то вот слово, которое открыл мне Иегова:

23 И всех жен твоих и сыновей твоих отведут к халдеям, и ты не спасешься от руки их; но будешь взят и предан в руку царя вавилонского и город сей сожжешь огнем.

24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words and you shall not die.

24 И сказал Седекия Иеремии: чтоб никто не знал слов сих; и не умрешь.

25 But if the princes hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you and say to you, Declare to us now what you said to the king and what the king said to you, hide nothing from us and we will not put you to death;

25 И если услышат князья, что я разговаривал с тобою, и придут к тебе, и скажут тебе: `скажи нам, что говорил ты царю, не скрой от нас, и мы тебя не умертвим, и что тебе говорил царь`?

26 Then you shall say to them, I was beseeching the king that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house to die there.

26 То скажи им: я повергнул пред лице царя прошение мое, чтоб он не возвратил меня в дом Ионафана, дабы я умер там.

27 Then came all the princes to Jeremiah and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded him. So they ceased conversing with him because the matter was not made known.

27 И пришли все князья к Иеремии, и стали спрашивать его, и он сказал им все те слова, какие царь велел сказать, и оставили его в покое, потому что не слышно было ни слова.

28 So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison house until the day that Jerusalem was taken.

28 И сидел Иеремия во дворе стражи до того дня, когда был взят Иерусалим.
