Jeremiah

Chapter 38

1 THEN Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken to all the people, saying,

2 Thus says the LORD: He who remains in this city shall die by sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he who goes forth to the Chaldeans shall live: and shall save his life.

3 Thus says the LORD, This city shall surely be delivered into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, which shall take it.

4 Then the princes said to the king, Let this man be put to death; for it is he who is weakening the hands of the men of war who remain in this city and the hands of all the people in speaking such words to them; for this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

5 Then King Zedekiah said, Behold, he is in your hands; for the king cannot say anything to you.

6 Then they took Jeremiah and cast him into the well of Malchiah the son of the king, which was in the court of the prison; and they let down Jeremiah with ropes. And there was no water in the well, but only mire; so Jeremiah sank in the mire.

7 Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the well, the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin;

8 So Ebed-melech went forth out of the king's house and spoke to the king, saying,

9 My Lord, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, for they have cast him into the well; and, behold, he will die of hunger, for there is no more bread in the city.

10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from here thirty men with you, and go and draw up Jeremiah out of the well before he dies.

11 So Ebed-melech the Ethiopian took the men with him from the king's house, and went into the treasury which is below the palace and took from there some worn out towels and rags, and lowered them down by a rope into the well to Jeremiah.

12 And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, Put these old towels and rags under your armpits under the rope. And Jeremiah did so.

13 So they drew up Jeremiah with the rope, and took him up out of the well; and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

14 Then King Zedekiah sent and took Jeremiah the prophet to him into the third entry that is in the house of the LORD; and the king said to Jeremiah, I will ask you a question, hide not a word from me.

15 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, If I tell you, behold, you will surely put me to death; and if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.

16 So King Zedekiah swore secretly to Jeremiah in the palace, saying, As the LORD lives, who created soul in us, I will not put you to death, neither will I deliver you into the hand of these men who seek your life.

17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: If you will go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then you will spare your life, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and you and your household shall live;

18 But if you do not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then this city shall be delivered into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape from their hands.

19 And King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, I am afraid, because of the Jews, to go forth to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hands and they mock me.

20 But Jeremiah said, They will not deliver you. Obey the word of the LORD, which I speak to you; so it shall be well with you, and your life shall be saved.

21 But if you refuse to go forth, this is the word that the LORD has shown me:

22 Behold, all the women who are left in the king of Judah's house shall go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, and those women shall say, Your friends have deceived you and have prevailed against you; yea, they have caused your feet to sink in the mire, and they have turned away from you.

23 So they shall bring out all your wives and your children to the Chaldeans; and you yourself shall not escape from their hands, but shall be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon; and this city shall be burned with fire.

24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words and you shall not die.

25 But if the princes hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you and say to you, Declare to us now what you said to the king and what the king said to you, hide nothing from us and we will not put you to death;

26 Then you shall say to them, I was beseeching the king that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house to die there.

27 Then came all the princes to Jeremiah and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded him. So they ceased conversing with him because the matter was not made known.

28 So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison house until the day that Jerusalem was taken.

Jeremiah

Chapter 38

1 Then Shephatiah8203 the son1121 of Mattan,4977 and Gedaliah1436 the son1121 of Pashur,6583 and Jucal3116 the son1121 of Shelemiah,8018 and Pashur6583 the son1121 of Malchiah,4441 heard8085 the words1697 that Jeremiah3414 had spoken1696 to all3605 the people,5971 saying,559

2 Thus3541 said559 the LORD,3068 He that remains3427 in this2063 city5892 shall die4191 by the sword,2719 by the famine,7458 and by the pestilence:1698 but he that goes3318 forth3318 to the Chaldeans3778 shall live;2421 for he shall have his life5315 for a prey,7998 and shall live.2425

3 Thus3541 said559 the LORD,3068 This2063 city5892 shall surely be given5414 into the hand3027 of the king4428 of Babylon's894 army,2428 which shall take3920 it.

4 Therefore the princes8269 said559 to the king,4428 We beseech4994 you, let this2088 man376 be put to death:4191 for thus5921 3651 he weakens7503 the hands3027 of the men582 of war4421 that remain7604 in this2063 city,5892 and the hands3027 of all3605 the people,5971 in speaking1696 such428 words1697 to them: for this2088 man376 seeks1875 not the welfare7965 of this2088 people,5971 but the hurt.7451

5 Then Zedekiah6667 the king4428 said,559 Behold,2009 he is in your hand:3027 for the king4428 is not he that can3201 do any thing1697 against you.

6 Then took3947 they Jeremiah,3414 and cast7993 him into413 the dungeon953 of Malchiah4441 the son1121 of Hammelech,4429 that was in the court2691 of the prison:4307 and they let7971 down7971 Jeremiah3414 with cords.2256 And in the dungeon953 there was no369 water,4325 but mire:2916 so Jeremiah3414 sunk2883 in the mire.2916

7 Now when Ebedmelech5663 the Ethiopian,3569 one376 of the eunuchs5631 which1931 was in the king's4428 house,1004 heard8085 that they had put5414 Jeremiah3414 in the dungeon;953 the king4428 then sitting3427 in the gate8179 of Benjamin;1144

8 Ebedmelech5663 went3318 forth3318 out of the king's4428 house,1004 and spoke1696 to the king 4428saying,559

9 My lord113 the king,4428 these428 men582 have done evil7489 in all3605 that they have done6213 to Jeremiah3414 the prophet,5030 whom853 834 they have cast7993 into413 the dungeon;953 and he is like to die4191 for hunger7457 in the place8478 where8478 he is: for there is no369 more5750 bread3899 in the city.5892

10 Then the king4428 commanded6680 Ebedmelech5663 the Ethiopian,3569 saying,559 Take3947 from hence2088 thirty7970 men582 with you, and take3947 up Jeremiah3414 the prophet5030 out of the dungeon,953 before2962 he die.4191

11 So Ebedmelech5663 took3947 the men582 with him, and went935 into the house1004 of the king4428 under413 8478 the treasury,214 and took3947 there8033 old1094 cast5499 clouts5499 and old1094 rotten4418 rags,4418 and let7971 them down7971 by cords2256 into413 the dungeon953 to Jeremiah.3414

12 And Ebedmelech5663 the Ethiopian3569 said559 to Jeremiah,3414 Put7760 now4994 these old1094 cast5499 clouts5499 and rotten4418 rags4418 under413 8478 your armholes679 3027 under413 8478 the cords.2256 And Jeremiah3414 did6213 so.3651

13 So they drew4900 up Jeremiah3414 with cords,2256 and took5927 him up out of the dungeon:953 and Jeremiah3414 remained3427 in the court2691 of the prison.4307

14 Then Zedekiah6667 the king4428 sent,7971 and took3947 Jeremiah3414 the prophet5030 to him into413 the third7992 entry3996 that is in the house1004 of the LORD:3068 and the king4428 said559 to Jeremiah,3414 I will ask7592 you a thing;1697 hide3582 nothing408 1697 from me.

15 Then Jeremiah3414 said559 to Zedekiah,6667 If518 I declare5046 it to you, will you not surely put me to death?4191 and if518 I give you counsel,3289 will you not listen8085 to me?

16 So Zedekiah6667 the king4428 swore7650 secretly5643 to Jeremiah,3414 saying,559 As the LORD3068 lives,2416 that made6213 us this2063 soul,5315 I will not put you to death,4191 neither518 will I give5414 you into the hand3027 of these428 men582 that seek1245 your life.5315

17 Then said559 Jeremiah3414 to Zedekiah,6667 Thus3541 said559 the LORD,3068 the God430 of hosts,6635 the God430 of Israel;3478 If518 you will assuredly3318 go3318 forth3318 to the king4428 of Babylon's894 princes,8269 then your soul5315 shall live,2421 and this2063 city5892 shall not be burned8313 with fire;784 and you shall live,2421 and your house:1004

18 But if518 you will not go3318 forth3318 to the king4428 of Babylon's894 princes,8269 then shall this2063 city5892 be given5414 into the hand3027 of the Chaldeans,3778 and they shall burn8313 it with fire,784 and you shall not escape4422 out of their hand.3027

19 And Zedekiah6667 the king4428 said559 to Jeremiah,3414 I am afraid1672 of the Jews3064 that are fallen5307 to the Chaldeans,3778 lest6435 they deliver5414 me into their hand,3027 and they mock5953 me.

20 But Jeremiah3414 said,559 They shall not deliver5414 you. Obey,8085 I beseech4994 you, the voice6963 of the LORD,3068 which834 I speak1696 to you: so it shall be well3190 to you, and your soul5315 shall live.2421

21 But if518 you refuse3986 to go3318 forth,3318 this2088 is the word1697 that the LORD3068 has showed7200 me:

22 And, behold,2009 all3605 the women802 that are left7604 in the king4428 of Judah's3063 house1004 shall be brought3318 forth4163 to the king4428 of Babylon's894 princes,8269 and those2007 women shall say,559 Your friends605 7965 have set5496 you on, and have prevailed3201 against you: your feet7272 are sunk2883 in the mire,1206 and they are turned5472 away back.268

23 So they shall bring4672 out all3605 your wives802 and your children1121 to the Chaldeans:3778 and you shall not escape4422 out of their hand,3027 but shall be taken8610 by the hand3027 of the king4428 of Babylon:894 and you shall cause this2063 city5892 to be burned8313 with fire.784

24 Then said559 Zedekiah6667 to Jeremiah,3414 Let no408 man376 know3045 of these428 words,1697 and you shall not die.4191

25 But if3588 the princes8269 hear8085 that I have talked1696 with you, and they come935 to you, and say559 to you, Declare5046 to us now4994 what4100 you have said1696 to the king,4428 hide3582 it not from us, and we will not put you to death;4191 also what4100 the king4428 said1696 to you:

26 Then you shall say559 to them, I presented5307 my supplication8467 before6440 the king,4428 that he would not cause me to return7725 to Jonathan's3129 house,1004 to die4191 there.8033

27 Then came935 all3605 the princes8269 to Jeremiah,3414 and asked7592 him: and he told5046 them according to all3605 these428 words1697 that the king4428 had commanded.6680 So they left2790 off speaking2790 with him; for the matter1697 was not perceived.8085

28 So Jeremiah3414 stayed3427 in the court2691 of the prison4307 until5704 the day3117 that Jerusalem3389 was taken:3920 and he was there when834 Jerusalem3389 was taken.3920

Jeremiah

Chapter 38

1 THEN Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken to all the people, saying,

2 Thus says the LORD: He who remains in this city shall die by sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he who goes forth to the Chaldeans shall live: and shall save his life.

3 Thus says the LORD, This city shall surely be delivered into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, which shall take it.

3 Thus3541 said559 the LORD,3068 This2063 city5892 shall surely be given5414 into the hand3027 of the king4428 of Babylon's894 army,2428 which shall take3920 it.

4 Then the princes said to the king, Let this man be put to death; for it is he who is weakening the hands of the men of war who remain in this city and the hands of all the people in speaking such words to them; for this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

5 Then King Zedekiah said, Behold, he is in your hands; for the king cannot say anything to you.

5 Then Zedekiah6667 the king4428 said,559 Behold,2009 he is in your hand:3027 for the king4428 is not he that can3201 do any thing1697 against you.

6 Then they took Jeremiah and cast him into the well of Malchiah the son of the king, which was in the court of the prison; and they let down Jeremiah with ropes. And there was no water in the well, but only mire; so Jeremiah sank in the mire.

7 Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the well, the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin;

8 So Ebed-melech went forth out of the king's house and spoke to the king, saying,

8 Ebedmelech5663 went3318 forth3318 out of the king's4428 house,1004 and spoke1696 to the king 4428saying,559

9 My Lord, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, for they have cast him into the well; and, behold, he will die of hunger, for there is no more bread in the city.

10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from here thirty men with you, and go and draw up Jeremiah out of the well before he dies.

11 So Ebed-melech the Ethiopian took the men with him from the king's house, and went into the treasury which is below the palace and took from there some worn out towels and rags, and lowered them down by a rope into the well to Jeremiah.

12 And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, Put these old towels and rags under your armpits under the rope. And Jeremiah did so.

13 So they drew up Jeremiah with the rope, and took him up out of the well; and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

13 So they drew4900 up Jeremiah3414 with cords,2256 and took5927 him up out of the dungeon:953 and Jeremiah3414 remained3427 in the court2691 of the prison.4307

14 Then King Zedekiah sent and took Jeremiah the prophet to him into the third entry that is in the house of the LORD; and the king said to Jeremiah, I will ask you a question, hide not a word from me.

15 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, If I tell you, behold, you will surely put me to death; and if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.

15 Then Jeremiah3414 said559 to Zedekiah,6667 If518 I declare5046 it to you, will you not surely put me to death?4191 and if518 I give you counsel,3289 will you not listen8085 to me?

16 So King Zedekiah swore secretly to Jeremiah in the palace, saying, As the LORD lives, who created soul in us, I will not put you to death, neither will I deliver you into the hand of these men who seek your life.

17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: If you will go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then you will spare your life, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and you and your household shall live;

18 But if you do not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then this city shall be delivered into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape from their hands.

19 And King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, I am afraid, because of the Jews, to go forth to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hands and they mock me.

19 And Zedekiah6667 the king4428 said559 to Jeremiah,3414 I am afraid1672 of the Jews3064 that are fallen5307 to the Chaldeans,3778 lest6435 they deliver5414 me into their hand,3027 and they mock5953 me.

20 But Jeremiah said, They will not deliver you. Obey the word of the LORD, which I speak to you; so it shall be well with you, and your life shall be saved.

20 But Jeremiah3414 said,559 They shall not deliver5414 you. Obey,8085 I beseech4994 you, the voice6963 of the LORD,3068 which834 I speak1696 to you: so it shall be well3190 to you, and your soul5315 shall live.2421

21 But if you refuse to go forth, this is the word that the LORD has shown me:

21 But if518 you refuse3986 to go3318 forth,3318 this2088 is the word1697 that the LORD3068 has showed7200 me:

22 Behold, all the women who are left in the king of Judah's house shall go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, and those women shall say, Your friends have deceived you and have prevailed against you; yea, they have caused your feet to sink in the mire, and they have turned away from you.

23 So they shall bring out all your wives and your children to the Chaldeans; and you yourself shall not escape from their hands, but shall be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon; and this city shall be burned with fire.

24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words and you shall not die.
