Chapter 3

1 NOW these are the nations which the LORD left, to test Israel by them, even the Israelites who had not experienced all the wars of Canaan.

2 Only that the generations of the children of Israel might learn warfare, at least such as had not experienced it before;

3 Namely, the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwelt on mount Lebanon, from the mount of the people of mount Hermon as far as the entrance to Hamath.

4 And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would obey the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

5 So the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hivites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hittites, and Jebusites;

6 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

7 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgot the LORD their God, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.

8 Therefore the anger of the LORD kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand of Cushan the Wicked, king of Aram-nahrin (Mesopotamia); and the children of Israel served Cushan the Wicked eight years.

9 And when the children of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for the children of Israel, and they were delivered by Othniel, the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

10 And the hand of the LORD was with him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war; and the LORD delivered Cushan the Wicked, king of Aram-nahrin, into his hands; and his hand prevailed against Cushan the Wicked.

11 And the land had rest forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

12 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.

13 And he mobilized the children of Ammon and Amalek against them, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.

14 So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

15 But when the children of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up for them a deliverer, Ehur the son of Gera, of the tribe of Benjamin, a man whose right hand was crippled, and the children of Israel sent a present by him to Eglon the king of Moab.

16 So Ehur made for himself a two edged dagger, and he made it short; and he girded it under his garment on his right thigh.

17 And he brought the present to Eglon king of Moab; and King Eglon was a simple-minded man.

18 And when Ehur had finished offering the present, he sent away the people that bore the present.

19 But he himself turned back from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret message to impart to you, O king; and the king said to those who were present, Get away from here. And all that stood by him went out.

20 And Ehur came to him; and he was sitting alone in the upper room which was made for him. And Ehur said to him, I have a message from God to impart to you. So Eglon arose from his seat.

21 And Ehur put forth his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly;

22 And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, because he did not draw the sword out of his belly; and he went out hastily.

23 Then Ehur went out into the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room upon him, locked them, and left.

24 When he had gone out, the king's servants came in; and when they saw that the doors of the upper chamber were locked, they said, Perhaps he has gone to the toilet in the closet of the upper chamber.

25 And they waited for a long time; and seeing that he did not open the doors of the upper chamber, they took keys and opened them; and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the floor.

26 And while they were in confusion, Ehur passed beyond the quarries, and escaped to Seirath.

27 And it came to pass, when he had returned, he sounded the trumpet on the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mountain, and he went before them.

28 And he said to them, Follow after me; for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hands. And they went down after him, and seized the fords of the Jordan on the side of Moab, and allowed not a man to pass over.

29 And they slew of the Moabites at that time about ten thousand men, all great and valiant men; and there escaped not a man.

30 So the Moabites were subdued at that time under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest for eighty years.

31 And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who slew six hundred of the Philistines with an ox goad; and he also delivered Israel.

1 Вот какие народы ГОСПОДЬ оставил в земле ханаанской, чтобы испытать израильтян — тех, кто не участвовал в сражениях с ханаанеями,

2 чтобы и у новых поколений израильских был опыт, чтобы научились воевать те, кто не умел прежде:

3 оставил Господь филистимлян (пять их областей с правителями), всех ханаанеев, сидонян и хиввеев, что живут на Ливане, от горы Баал-Ермон до Лево-Хамата.

4 Все эти народы были оставлены, чтобы испытать израильтян и узнать, будут ли они повиноваться заповедям ГОСПОДНИМ, данным их отцам через Моисея.

5 И жили израильтяне среди ханаанеев, хеттов, амореев, периззеев, хиввеев и евусеев:

6 брали в жены их дочерей, своих дочерей выдавали за их сыновей и богам их служили.

7 Так израильтяне стали творить зло перед ГОСПОДОМ, оставив ГОСПОДА, своего Бога, служа ваалам и Ашерам в рощах.

8 Разгневался ГОСПОДЬ на израильтян, предал их в руки Кушан-Ришатаима, царя месопотамского Арама, и были они в рабстве у Кушан-Ришатаима восемь лет.

9 И когда израильтяне возопили к ГОСПОДУ о помощи, Он послал им избавителя: спас их Отниэль, сын Кеназа, младший брат Халева.

10 Был на нем Дух ГОСПОДЕНЬ, и он был судьей Израиля, правил им. Он пошел войной на врага, и ГОСПОДЬ предал в его руки Кушан-Ришатаима, царя Арама. Победил он Кушан-Ришатаима,

11 и прекратились войны в этой стране, был мир сорок лет, пока Отниэль, сына Кеназа, не умер.

12 А израильтяне снова стали творить зло пред ГОСПОДОМ, и Он направил против них Эглона, царя моавского за то, что они творили зло пред ГОСПОДОМ.

13 Эглон собрал к себе аммонитян и амалекитян, выступил в поход и одержал победу над израильтянами, завоевав Город пальм.

14 И были израильтяне в рабстве у Эглона, царя моавского, восемнадцать лет.

15 Возопили тогда израильтяне о помощи к ГОСПОДУ, и ГОСПОДЬ послал им избавителя — Эхуда, сына Геры, потомка Вениамина. Эхуд был левшой. Израильтяне отправили его с данью к Эглону, царю моавскому.

16 А Эхуд приготовил себе обоюдоострый меч в локоть длиной и привязал его под одеждой к правому бедру.

17 Доставил Эхуд дань Эглону, царю моавскому (это был тучный человек).

18 Он передал дань и отослал людей, что их несли,

19 а сам от идолов, что стояли в Гилгале, вернулся к царю Эглону и сказал ему: «Царь, есть у меня к тебе тайное слово!» Тот немедленно отослал всех своих приближенных, и они вышли.

20 Тогда Эхуд поднялся к нему в личные покои, в верхнюю прохладную комнату, и сказал: «Есть у меня для тебя слово от Бога!» Эглон поднялся с кресла,

21 а Эхуд выхватил левой рукой меч, привязанный у него на правом бедре, и вонзил ему в живот,

22 так что рукоять вошла вслед за клинком и меча не видно стало под жиром, потому что Эхуд не стал извлекать меча из тела. И вышли испражнения.

23 А Эхуд выбрался во внутренний двор; дверь же верхней комнаты он закрыл и запер.

24 Когда Эхуд ушел, слуги подошли к дверям верхней прохладной комнаты, нашли их запертыми и решили, что Эглон уединился там, чтобы справить нужду.

25 Так они ждали, пока их не смутило, что Эглон так долго не открывает двери верхней комнаты. Тогда они взяли ключ и, отперев дверь, увидели, что владыка их лежит на полу мертвый.

26 И пока они были в замешательстве, Эхуд скрылся, прошел мимо идолов и бежал в Сеиру.

27 Когда Эхуд возвратился, он протрубил в рог на Ефремовом нагорье. Израильтяне спустились вместе с ним с гор, и он шел впереди них.

28 «Идите за мной! — призвал он их. — ГОСПОДЬ отдал вам в руки врагов ваших, моавитян!» Израильтяне последовали за ним, захватили берега подле бродов Иордана по дороге в Моав и никого из моавитян не пропускали.

29 И нанесли израильтяне поражение Моаву, около десяти тысяч моавитян было убито: все они были могучие воины и тучные, и никто из них не спасся.

30 В тот день израильтяне победили моавитян, и прекратились войны в этой стране, был мир восемьдесят лет.

31 После Эхуда был Шамгар, сын Анат; он нанес поражение филистимлянам, уничтожив около шестисот человек колом, которым погоняют волов. Он тоже, как и Эхуд, стал избавителем израильтян.

10 Был на нем Дух ГОСПОДЕНЬ, и он был судьей Израиля, правил им. Он пошел войной на врага, и ГОСПОДЬ предал в его руки Кушан-Ришатаима, царя Арама. Победил он Кушан-Ришатаима,

11 And the land had rest forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

11 и прекратились войны в этой стране, был мир сорок лет, пока Отниэль, сына Кеназа, не умер.

31 And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who slew six hundred of the Philistines with an ox goad; and he also delivered Israel.

31 После Эхуда был Шамгар, сын Анат; он нанес поражение филистимлянам, уничтожив около шестисот человек колом, которым погоняют волов. Он тоже, как и Эхуд, стал избавителем израильтян.
