Chapter 20

1 FOR the kingdom of heaven is like a man, who is a householder, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.

2 He bargained with the laborers for a penny a day, and sent them to his vineyard.

3 And he went out at the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the market place.

4 And he said to them, You also go to the vineyard, and I will give you what is right. And they went.

5 And he went out again at the sixth and at the ninth hour, and did the same.

6 And towards the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle, and he said to them, Why do you stand all day idle?

7 They said to him, Because no man has hired us. He said to them, You also go to the vineyard, and you will receive what is right.

8 When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, Call the laborers and pay them their wages; and begin from the last ones to the first.

9 When those of the eleventh hour came, they each received a penny.

10 But when the first ones came, they expected to receive more; but they also got each one a penny.

11 And when they received it, they murmured against the householder,

12 Saying, These last ones have worked only one hour, and you have made them equal with us who have borne the weight of the day and its heat.

13 He answered and said to one of them, My friend, I am not doing you an injustice; did you not bargain with me for a penny?

14 Take what is yours and go away; I wish to give to this last one the same as to you.

15 Have I no right to do what I wish with mine own? Or are you jealous because I am generous?

16 Even so the last shall be first, and the first last; for many are called, but few are chosen.

17 Now Jesus was ready to go up to Jerusalem; and he took his twelve disciples apart on the road, and he said to them,

18 Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man will be delivered to the high priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death.

19 And they will deliver him to the Gentiles and they will mock him, and scourge him, and crucify him; and on the third day he will rise up.

20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him, together with her sons; and she worshipped him, and requested something of him.

21 He said to her, What do you wish? She said to him, Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at your right and one at your left, in your kingdom.

22 Jesus answered and said, You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am ready to drink, or be baptized with the baptism with which I am to be baptized? They said to him, We can.

23 He said to them, Indeed my cup you shall drink, and the baptism with which I am to be baptized, you too shall be baptized with; but to sit at my right hand and at my left, that is not mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by my Father.

24 When the ten heard it, they were angry at the two brothers.

25 And Jesus called them and said, You know that the princes of the people are also their owners; and their officials rule over them.

26 Let not this be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you, let him be a minister to you;

27 And whoever wishes to be first among you, let him be a servant to you;

28 Just as the Son of man did not come to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his life as a salvation for the sake of many.

29 And when Jesus went out of Jericho a large crowd followed him.

30 And behold, two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried aloud, saying, Have mercy upon us, O Lord, son of David.

31 But the people rebuked them to keep quiet; but they cried louder, saying, Our Lord, have mercy upon us, son of David.

32 And Jesus stopped and called them, and he said, What do you wish me to do for you?

33 They said to him, Our Lord, that our eyes may be opened.

34 And Jesus had mercy upon them, so he touched their eyes; and immediately their eyes were opened, and they followed him.

5 Und2532 sie gingen hin. Abermal ging er aus1831 um4012 die sechste1623 und neunte1766 Stunde5610 und tat4160 gleich also5615.

6 Um4012 die elfte1734 Stunde5610 aber1161 ging er aus1831 und2532 fand2147 andere243 müßig692 stehen2476 und sprach3004 zu ihnen: Was5101 stehet2476 ihr846 hier5602 den ganzen3650 Tag2250 müßig692?

7 Sie1437 sprachen3004 zu ihm: Es hat uns2248 niemand3762 gedinget. Er846 sprach3004 zu ihnen: Gehet ihr846 auch2532 hin5217 in1519 den Weinberg290, und2532 was recht1342 sein wird5600, soll euch3754 werden2983.

8 Da es nun Abend3798 ward1096, sprach3004 der Herr2962 des846 Weinbergs zu seinem Schaffner2012: Rufe2564 die Arbeiter2040 und1161 gib591 ihnen den Lohn3408 und2532 hebe an756 an575 den letzten2078 bis2193 zu den ersten4413.

9 Da kamen2064, die um4012 die elfte1734 Stunde5610 gedinget waren, und2532 empfing2983 ein jeglicher303 seinen Groschen1220.

10 Da2532 aber1161 die ersten4413 kamen2064, meineten sie3543, sie würden mehr4119 empfahen; und3754 sie empfingen2983 auch2532 ein jeglicher303 seinen Groschen1220.

11 Und1161 da sie den empfingen2983, murreten sie wider2596 den Hausvater3617

12 und3754 sprachen3004: Diese3778 letzten2078 haben nur eine3391 Stunde5610 gearbeitet4160, und du hast sie uns2254 gleich2470 gemacht4160, die3588 wir des846 Tages2250 Last922 und Hitze2742 getragen941 haben.

13 Er846 antwortete611 aber1161 und sagte2036 zu einem unter ihnen: Mein Freund2083, ich tue dir4571 nicht3756 unrecht91. Bist du nicht3780 mit mir3427 eins1520 worden um einen Groschen1220?

14 Nimm142, was dein4674 ist2532, und2532 gehe hin! Ich will2309 aber diesem5129 letzten2078 geben1325 gleichwie5613 dir4671.

15 Oder2228 habe2076 ich3427 nicht3756 Macht1832 zu1722 tun4160, was ich will2309, mit dem3739 Meinen? Siehest du4675 darum scheel3788, daß3754 ich so gütig18 bin1510?

16 Also3779 werden die Letzten2078 die Ersten4413, und2532 die Ersten4413 die Letzten2078 sein2071. Denn1063 viele4183 sind1526 berufen2822, aber1161 wenige3641 sind auserwählet.

17 Und2532 er2424 zog hinauf gen Jerusalem2414 und2532 nahm3880 zu1519 sich die zwölf1427 Jünger3101 besonders2398 auf305 dem Wege3598 und sprach2036 zu1722 ihnen846:

18 Siehe2400, wir ziehen hinauf305 gen Jerusalem2414, und2532 des846 Menschen Sohn wird den444 Hohenpriestern749 und2532 Schriftgelehrten1122 überantwortet werden3860, und2532 sie werden ihn verdammen2632 zum1519 Tode2288.

19 Und2532 werden ihn überantworten3860 den Heiden1484, zu1519 verspotten1702 und2532 zu geißeln3146 und2532 zu kreuzigen4717. Und2532 am dritten5154 Tage2250 wird er846 wieder auferstehen450.

20 Da5119 trat zu4334 ihm846 die Mutter3384 der2532 Kinder des846 Zebedäus2199 mit3326 ihren Söhnen, fiel vor ihm nieder und4352 bat154 etwas5100 von3844 ihm.

21 Und1161 er846 sprach2036 zu2443 ihr846: Was5101 willst2309 du4675? Sie sprach3004 zu1537 ihm: Laß diese3778 meine3450 zwei1417 Söhne sitzen2523 in1722 deinem4675 Reiche932, einen1520 zu1537 deiner Rechten1188 und2532 den andern zu deiner Linken2176.

22 Aber1161 JEsus2424 antwortete611 und2532 sprach2036: Ihr846 wisset1492 nicht3756, was5101 ihr1410 bittet154. Könnet ihr den Kelch4221 trinken4095, den ich1473 trinken4095 werde3195, und euch taufen907 lassen mit der3739 Taufe908, da ich1473 mit getauft werde907? Sie sprachen3004 zu1410 ihm: Jawohl.

23 Und2532 er sprach3004 zu1537 ihnen: Meinen3450 Kelch4221 sollt ihr846 zwar3303 trinken4095 und2532 mit5259 der3739 Taufe907, da ich1473 mit getauft werde907, sollt ihr getauft werden, aber1161 das3739 Sitzen2523 zu meiner1699 Rechten1188 und2532 Linken2176 zu geben1325, stehet2076 mir3450 nicht3756 zu, sondern235 denen es bereitet2090 ist von1537 meinem3450 Vater3962.

24 Da2532 das die191 Zehn1176 höreten, wurden sie unwillig23 über4012 die zwei1417 Brüder80.

25 Aber1161 JEsus2424 rief sie846 zu sich4341 und2532 sprach2036: Ihr846 wisset1492, daß3754 die846 weltlichen1484 Fürsten758 herrschen2634, und die Oberherren haben Gewalt2715.

26 So3779 soll1096 es nicht3756 sein2071 unter1722 euch5213, sondern1161 so jemand will2309 unter1722 euch5213 gewaltig3173 sein2071, der sei2077 euer5216 Diener1249;

27 und2532 wer1437 da1722 will2309 der Vornehmste4413 sein1511, der sei2077 euer5213 Knecht1401,
