Chapter 10

1 Hear8085 you the word1697 which834 the LORD3068 speaks1696 to you, O house1004 of Israel:3478

2 Thus3541 said559 the LORD,3068 Learn3925 not the way1870 of the heathen,1471 and be not dismayed2865 at the signs226 of heaven;8064 for the heathen1471 are dismayed2865 at them.

3 For the customs2708 of the people5971 are vain:1892 for one cuts3772 a tree6086 out of the forest,3293 the work4639 of the hands3027 of the workman,2796 with the ax.4621

4 They deck3302 it with silver3701 and with gold;2091 they fasten2388 it with nails4548 and with hammers,4717 that it move6328 not.

5 They are upright4749 as the palm8560 tree, but speak1696 not: they must needs be borne,5375 because3588 they cannot3808 go.6805 Be not afraid3372 of them; for they cannot3808 do evil,7489 neither1571 369 also1571 is it in them to do good.3190

6 For as much as there is none369 like3644 to you, O LORD;3068 you are great,1419 and your name8034 is great1419 in might.1369

7 Who4310 would not fear3372 you, O King4428 of nations?1471 for to you does it appertain:2969 for as much as among all3605 the wise2450 men of the nations,1471 and in all3605 their kingdoms,4467 there is none369 like3644 to you.

8 But they are altogether259 brutish1197 and foolish:3688 the stock6086 is a doctrine4148 of vanities.1892

9 Silver3701 spread7554 into plates is brought935 from Tarshish,8659 and gold2091 from Uphaz,210 the work4639 of the workman,2796 and of the hands3027 of the founder:6884 blue8504 and purple713 is their clothing:3830 they are all3605 the work4639 of cunning2450 men.

10 But the LORD3068 is the true571 God,430 he is the living2416 God,430 and an everlasting5769 king:4428 at his wrath7110 the earth776 shall tremble,7493 and the nations1471 shall not be able3201 to abide3557 his indignation.2195

11 Thus1836 shall you say560 to them, The gods426 that have not made5648 the heavens8065 and the earth,778 even they shall perish7 from the earth,772 and from under8460 these429 heavens.8065

12 He has made6213 the earth776 by his power,3581 he has established3559 the world8398 by his wisdom,2451 and has stretched5186 out the heavens8064 by his discretion.8394

13 When he utters5414 his voice,6963 there is a multitude1995 of waters4325 in the heavens,8064 and he causes the vapors5387 to ascend5927 from the ends7097 of the earth;776 he makes6213 lightning1300 with rain,4306 and brings3318 forth3318 the wind7307 out of his treasures.214

14 Every3605 man120 is brutish1197 in his knowledge:1847 every3605 founder6884 is confounded3001 by the graven6459 image:6459 for his molten5262 image is falsehood,8267 and there is no3808 breath7307 in them.

15 They are vanity,1892 and the work4639 of errors:8595 in the time6256 of their visitation6486 they shall perish.6

16 The portion2506 of Jacob3290 is not like them: for he is the former3335 of all3605 things; and Israel3478 is the rod7626 of his inheritance:5159 The LORD3068 of hosts6635 is his name.8034

17 Gather622 up your wares3666 out of the land,776 O inhabitant3427 of the fortress.4693

18 For thus3541 said559 the LORD,3068 Behold,2005 I will sling7049 out the inhabitants3427 of the land776 at this2063 once,6471 and will distress6887 them, that they may find4672 it so.

19 Woe188 is me for my hurt!7667 my wound4347 is grievous;2470 but I said,559 Truly389 this2088 is a grief,2483 and I must bear5375 it.

20 My tabernacle168 is spoiled,7703 and all3605 my cords4340 are broken:5423 my children1121 are gone3318 forth3318 of me, and they are not: there is none369 to stretch5186 forth my tent168 any more,5750 and to set6965 up my curtains.3407

21 For the pastors7462 are become1197 brutish,1197 and have not sought1875 the LORD:3068 therefore5921 3651 they shall not prosper,7919 and all3605 their flocks4830 shall be scattered.6327

22 Behold,2009 the noise6963 of the bruit8052 is come,935 and a great1419 commotion7494 out of the north6828 country,776 to make7760 the cities5892 of Judah3063 desolate,8077 and a den4583 of dragons.8577

23 O LORD,3068 I know3045 that the way1870 of man120 is not in himself: it is not in man that walks1980 to direct3559 his steps.6806

24 O LORD,3068 correct3256 me, but with judgment;4941 not in your anger,639 lest6435 you bring me to nothing.4591

25 Pour8210 out your fury2534 on the heathen1471 that know3045 you not, and on the families4940 that call7121 not on your name:8034 for they have eaten398 up Jacob,3290 and devoured398 him, and consumed3615 him, and have made6213 his habitation5116 desolate.8074

Chapter 10

1 HEAR the word which the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel:

2 Thus says the LORD, Learn not the way of the Gentiles and be not afraid of the signs of heaven; for the Gentiles are dismayed at them.

3 For the gods of the Gentiles are nothing; they are cut from a tree in the forest, the work of the hands of a carpenter, things made with a plane.

4 They are decked with silver and with gold; men fasten them with hammers and nails, so that they may not fall apart.

5 They are set up straight as palm trees, but they do not speak; they must be carried, for they cannot walk. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither can they do good.

6 There is no one like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.

7 Who would not revere thee, O King of nations? For to thee belongs the kingdom; for among all the wise men of the nations and in all their kingdoms there is none like thee.

8 But altogether the vain doctrines of wooden image worship shall be utterly destroyed and consumed.

9 Fine silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Ophir; they are the work of the carpenter and of the hands of the silversmith; blue and purple is their clothing; they are woven by cunning men.

10 But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King; at his anger the earth trembles, and the nations shall not be able to endure his indignation.

11 Thus shall you say to them: The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth and from under these heavens.

12 The LORD has made the earth by his power; he has established the world by his wisdom, and has stretched out the heavens by his intelligence.

13 He causes the sound of roaring of waters that are in the heavens, and he causes the clouds to ascend from the ends of the earth; he makes lightnings for the rain, and brings forth the wind out of his treasure house.

14 Every man has acted foolishly because of lack of knowledge; all those who work in gold are ashamed because of the graven images which they made; for molten images are falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

15 They are vanity, and the work of vain folly; in the time when they are visited with punishment, they shall perish.

16 The portion of Jacob is not like them; for he who has created all things is their portion; and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance; The LORD of hosts is his name.

17 Gather up your disgrace from the land, O inhabitant who dwells in distress.

18 For thus says the LORD, Behold, I will perplex the inhabitants of this land at this very time, so that they may seek me and find me.

19 Woe to me for my hurt! my wound is grievous; but I said, Truly this is my grief and I must bear it.

20 My tabernacle is plundered and all its cords are cut off; my children have left me, and they are not; there is no one to pitch my tent again and to set up my curtains.

21 For the shepherds have misbehaved, and have not sought the LORD; and because they did not prosper, all of their flocks have been scattered.

22 Behold, the noise of the report is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate and a den of jackals.

23 I know that the ways of the LORD are not like the ways of men; he does not walk as a man directing his steps.

24 O LORD, correct me justly, and not in thy anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.

25 Pour out thy wrath upon the nations who do not know thee and upon the families that call not on thy name; for they have devoured Jacob, yea, they have devoured him and consumed him and have made his habitation desolate.
