Chapter 4

1 From where4159 come wars4171 and fights3163 among1722 you? come they not hence,1782 even of your5216 lusts2237 that war4754 in your5216 members?3196

2 You lust,1937 and have2192 not: you kill,5407 and desire2206 to have,2192 and cannot3756 1410 obtain:2013 you fight3164 and war,4170 yet1161 you have2192 not, because1223 you ask154 not.

3 You ask,154 and receive2983 not, because1360 you ask154 amiss,2560 that you may consume1159 it on your5216 lusts.2237

4 You adulterers3432 and adulteresses,3428 know1492 you not that the friendship5373 of the world2889 is enmity2189 with God?2316 whoever3739 302 therefore3767 will1014 be a friend5384 of the world2889 is the enemy2190 of God.2316

5 Do you think1380 that the scripture1124 said3004 in vain,2761 The spirit4151 that dwells2730 in us lusts1971 to envy?5355

6 But he gives1325 more3187 grace.5485 Why1352 he said,3004 God2316 resists498 the proud,5244 but gives1325 grace5485 to the humble.5011

7 Submit5293 yourselves therefore3767 to God.2316 Resist436 the devil,1228 and he will flee5343 from you.

8 Draw near1448 to God,2316 and he will draw near1448 to you. Cleanse2511 your hands,5495 you sinners;268 and purify48 your hearts,2588 you double1374 minded.1374

9 Be afflicted,5003 and mourn,3996 and weep:2799 let your5216 laughter1071 be turned3344 to mourning,3997 and your3588 joy5479 to heaviness.2726

10 Humble5013 yourselves in the sight1799 of the Lord,2962 and he shall lift5312 you up.

11 Speak2635 not evil2635 one240 of another,240 brothers.80 He that speaks2635 evil2635 of his brother,80 and judges2919 his brother,80 speaks2635 evil2635 of the law,3551 and judges2919 the law:3551 but if1487 you judge2919 the law,3551 you are1488 not a doer4163 of the law,3551 but a judge.2923

12 There is one1520 lawgiver,3550 who3588 is able1410 to save4982 and to destroy:622 who5101 are1488 you that judge2919 another?2087

13 Go33 to now,3568 you that say,3004 To day4594 or2228 to morrow839 we will go4198 into1519 such3592 a city,4172 and continue4160 there1563 a year,1763 and buy1710 and sell,1710 and get gain:2770

14 Whereas3748 you know1987 not what3588 shall be on the morrow.839 For what4169 is your5216 life?2222 It is even1063 a vapor,822 that appears5316 for a little3641 time, and then1899 vanishes853 away.

15 For that you ought to say,3004 If1437 the Lord2962 will,2309 we shall live,2198 and do4160 this,5124 or2228 that.

16 But now3568 you rejoice2744 in your5216 boastings:212 all3956 such5108 rejoicing2746 is evil.4190

17 Therefore3767 to him that knows1492 to do4160 good,2570 and does4160 it not, to him it is sin.266

Chapter 4

1 FROM whence come conflicts and quarrels among you? Is it not from the lusts that war in your members?

2 You covet, and do not obtain; you kill and envy, but you cannot possess; you strive and fight, yet you have nothing, because you do not ask.

3 You ask and you do not receive because you do not ask sincerely, you ask that you may satisfy your lusts.

4 O you adulterers! Do you not know that the love for worldly things is enmity with God? Whosoever, therefore, esteems worldly things is the enemy of God.

5 Or do you think that the scripture said in vain, The pride that dwells in us is provoked by jealousy?

6 But our LORD has given us abundant grace. Therefore he said, God humbles the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist Satan, and he will flee from you.

8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, O you sinners! And purify your hearts, O you of doubtful mind!

9 Humble yourselves, and mourn; let your laughter be turned to weeping, and your joy to sorrow.

10 Humble yourselves before the LORD and he shall lift you up.

11 Do not speak against one another, my brethren, for he who speaks against his brother, and judges his brother, speaks against the law, and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge of it.

12 For there is one lawgiver and judge, who is able to save and to destroy: who are you to judge your neighbor?

13 What then shall we say of those who say, Today or tomorrow we will go to a certain city, and will work there a year, and will trade and prosper?

14 They do not know what will happen tomorrow! For what is our life? It is but a vapour, which appears for a little while, and then vanishes away.

15 Instead of that they should say, If the LORD will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

16 But now they are proud in their boasting: all such pride is evil.

17 Therefore he who knows to do good, and does not do it, to him it is sin.
