Chapter 29

1 These428 are the words1697 of the covenant,1285 which the LORD3068 commanded6680 Moses4872 to make3772 with the children1121 of Israel3478 in the land776 of Moab,4124 beside905 the covenant1285 which834 he made3772 with them in Horeb.2722

2 And Moses4872 called7121 to all3605 Israel,3478 and said559 to them, You have seen7200 all3605 that the LORD3068 did6213 before your eyes5869 in the land776 of Egypt4714 to Pharaoh,6547 and to all3605 his servants,5650 and to all3605 his land;776

3 The great1419 temptations4531 which834 your eyes5869 have seen,7200 the signs,226 and those1992 great1419 miracles:4159

4 Yet the LORD3068 has not given5414 you an heart3820 to perceive,3045 and eyes5869 to see,7200 and ears241 to hear,8085 to this2088 day.3117

5 And I have led3212 you forty705 years8141 in the wilderness:4057 your clothes8008 are not waxen old1086 on you, and your shoe5275 is not waxen old1086 on your foot.7272

6 You have not eaten398 bread,3899 neither3808 have you drunk8354 wine3196 or strong drink:7941 that you might know3045 that I am the LORD3068 your God.430

7 And when you came935 to this2088 place,4725 Sihon5511 the king4428 of Heshbon,2809 and Og5747 the king4428 of Bashan,1316 came3318 out against7125 us to battle,4421 and we smote5221 them:

8 And we took3947 their land,776 and gave5414 it for an inheritance5159 to the Reubenites,7206 and to the Gadites,1425 and to the half2677 tribe7626 of Manasseh.4520

9 Keep8104 therefore the words1697 of this2063 covenant,1285 and do6213 them, that you may prosper7919 in all3605 that you do.6213

10 You stand5324 this day3117 all3605 of you before6440 the LORD3068 your God;430 your captains7218 of your tribes,7626 your elders,2205 and your officers,7860 with all3605 the men376 of Israel,3478

11 Your little2945 ones, your wives,802 and your stranger1616 that is in your camp,4264 from the hewer2404 of your wood6086 to the drawer7579 of your water:4325

12 That you should enter5674 into covenant1285 with the LORD3068 your God,430 and into his oath,423 which834 the LORD3068 your God430 makes3772 with you this day:3117

13 That he may establish6965 you to day3117 for a people5971 to himself, and that he may be to you a God,430 as he has said1696 to you, and as he has sworn7650 to your fathers,1 to Abraham,85 to Isaac,3327 and to Jacob.3290

14 Neither3808 with you only905 do I make3772 this2063 covenant1285 and this2063 oath;423

15 But with him that stands5975 here6311 with us this day3117 before6440 the LORD3068 our God,430 and also with him that is not here6311 with us this day:3117

16 (For you know3045 how834 we have dwelled3427 in the land776 of Egypt;4714 and how834 we came5674 through7130 the nations1471 which834 you passed5674 by;

17 And you have seen7200 their abominations,8251 and their idols,1544 wood6086 and stone,68 silver3701 and gold,2091 which834 were among them:)

18 Lest6435 there should be among you man,376 or176 woman,802 or176 family,4940 or176 tribe,7626 whose834 heart3824 turns6437 away this day3117 from the LORD3068 our God,430 to go3212 and serve5647 the gods430 of these1992 nations;1471 lest6435 there should be among you a root8328 that bears6509 gall7219 and wormwood;3939

19 And it come1961 to pass, when he hears8085 the words1697 of this2063 curse,423 that he bless1288 himself in his heart,3824 saying,559 I shall have peace,7965 though3588 I walk3212 in the imagination8307 of my heart,3820 to add5595 drunkenness7302 to thirst:6771

20 The LORD3068 will not spare5545 him, but then227 the anger639 of the LORD3068 and his jealousy7068 shall smoke6225 against that man,376 and all3605 the curses423 that are written3789 in this2088 book5612 shall lie7257 on him, and the LORD3068 shall blot4229 out his name8034 from under8478 heaven.8064

21 And the LORD3068 shall separate914 him to evil7451 out of all3605 the tribes7626 of Israel,3478 according to all3605 the curses423 of the covenant1285 that are written3789 in this2088 book5612 of the law:8451

22 So that the generation1755 to come314 of your children1121 that shall rise6965 up after310 you, and the stranger5237 that shall come935 from a far7350 land,776 shall say,559 when they see7200 the plagues4347 of that land,776 and the sicknesses8463 which834 the LORD3068 has laid2470 on it;

23 And that the whole3605 land776 thereof is brimstone,1614 and salt,4417 and burning,8316 that it is not sown,2232 nor3808 bears,6779 nor3808 any3605 grass6212 grows5927 therein, like the overthrow4114 of Sodom,5467 and Gomorrah,6017 Admah,126 and Zeboim,6636 which834 the LORD3068 overthrew2015 in his anger,639 and in his wrath:2534

24 Even all3605 nations1471 shall say,559 Why5921 4100 has the LORD3068 done6213 thus3660 to this2063 land?776 what4100 means the heat2750 of this2088 great1419 anger?639

25 Then men shall say,559 Because5921 834 they have forsaken5800 the covenant1285 of the LORD3068 God430 of their fathers,1 which834 he made3772 with them when he brought3318 them forth3318 out of the land776 of Egypt:4714

26 For they went3212 and served5647 other312 gods,430 and worshipped7812 them, gods430 whom834 they knew3045 not, and whom834 he had not given2505 to them:

27 And the anger639 of the LORD3068 was kindled2734 against this1931 land,776 to bring935 on it all3605 the curses7045 that are written3789 in this2088 book:5612

28 And the LORD3068 rooted5428 them out of their land127 in anger,639 and in wrath,2534 and in great1419 indignation,7110 and cast7993 them into413 another312 land,776 as it is this2088 day.3117

29 The secret5641 things belong to the LORD3068 our God:430 but those things which are revealed1540 belong to us and to our children1121 for ever,5769 that we may do6213 all3605 the words1697 of this2063 law.8451

Deuteronomy

Chapter 29

1 THESE are the words of the covenant which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which he made with them in Horeb.

2 And Moses called to all Israel, and said to them, You have seen all that the LORD did to Pharaoh before your eyes in the land of Egypt and to all his servants and to all his army and to all his land;

3 The great trials which your eyes have seen, the signs, and those great marvels which you saw;

4 Yet to this day the LORD has not given you a heart to understand and eyes to see and ears to hear.

5 And I have led you forty years in the wilderness; your clothes are not worn out upon you and your shoes are not worn out upon your feet.

6 You have not eaten bread, neither have you drunk wine or strong drink, that you might know that I am the LORD your God.

7 And when you came to this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon and Og the king of Mathnin came out against us to battle, and we slew them;

8 And we took their land and gave it for an inheritance to the Reubenites and to the Gadites and to the half tribe of Manasseh.

9 Keep therefore the words of this covenant and do them, that you may prosper in all that you do.

10 You stand this day before the LORD your God, all the heads of your tribes, your elders and your scribes, all the men of Israel,

11 Your little ones, your wives, and the stranger who is in your camp, from the gatherer of your wood to the drawer of your water;

12 That you may not transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, and the oath of the LORD your God, which he made with you this day;

13 Because he will establish you this day a people to himself, and he will be to you the God, as he has promised you, and as he has sworn to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

14 Neither is it with you only that I do make this covenant and this oath;

15 But with all who stand here with us this day before the LORD our God, and also with him who is not here with us this day

16 (For you know how we have sojourned in the land of Egypt; and how we came through the nations which you passed by;

17 And you have seen their abominations and their idols of wood and stone, overlaid with silver and gold).

18 Perhaps there is among you a man or woman or family or tribe whose heart turns away this day from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; or perhaps there is among you a root that springs up and bears poison and wormwood;

19 And when he hears the words of this oath, he shall reason in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of my heart, to add drunkenness to thirst;

20 The LORD would not forgive him, but then the anger of the LORD and his zealousness would be grievous against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under the heaven.

21 And the LORD shall single him out to misfortune from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this book of the law.

22 So that the generation to come, your children that shall rise up after you and the strangers that shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses which the LORD has brought upon it;

23 Laying it waste with brimstone and with scorched salt, that the whole land is not sown, nor any grass grows in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger and in his wrath;

24 And all the nations shall say, Why has the LORD done thus to this land? And why has his anger kindled so much?

25 Then men shall say, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt:

26 And they went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods whom they had not known, nor had they divided spoils among them;

27 Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this book;

28 And the LORD uprooted them from their land in anger and in wrath and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.

29 The secret things belong to the LORD our God; but those things that are revealed belong to us and to our children for ever, that we may keep and do all the words of this law.

9 Keep8104 therefore the words1697 of this2063 covenant,1285 and do6213 them, that you may prosper7919 in all3605 that you do.6213

12 That you should enter5674 into covenant1285 with the LORD3068 your God,430 and into his oath,423 which834 the LORD3068 your God430 makes3772 with you this day:3117

18 Perhaps there is among you a man or woman or family or tribe whose heart turns away this day from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; or perhaps there is among you a root that springs up and bears poison and wormwood;

19 And when he hears the words of this oath, he shall reason in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of my heart, to add drunkenness to thirst;

20 The LORD would not forgive him, but then the anger of the LORD and his zealousness would be grievous against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under the heaven.

21 And the LORD3068 shall separate914 him to evil7451 out of all3605 the tribes7626 of Israel,3478 according to all3605 the curses423 of the covenant1285 that are written3789 in this2088 book5612 of the law:8451

21 And the LORD shall single him out to misfortune from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this book of the law.

22 So that the generation1755 to come314 of your children1121 that shall rise6965 up after310 you, and the stranger5237 that shall come935 from a far7350 land,776 shall say,559 when they see7200 the plagues4347 of that land,776 and the sicknesses8463 which834 the LORD3068 has laid2470 on it;

22 So that the generation to come, your children that shall rise up after you and the strangers that shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses which the LORD has brought upon it;

23 Laying it waste with brimstone and with scorched salt, that the whole land is not sown, nor any grass grows in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger and in his wrath;

24 And all the nations shall say, Why has the LORD done thus to this land? And why has his anger kindled so much?

25 Then men shall say,559 Because5921 834 they have forsaken5800 the covenant1285 of the LORD3068 God430 of their fathers,1 which834 he made3772 with them when he brought3318 them forth3318 out of the land776 of Egypt:4714

25 Then men shall say, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt:

26 For they went3212 and served5647 other312 gods,430 and worshipped7812 them, gods430 whom834 they knew3045 not, and whom834 he had not given2505 to them:

26 And they went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods whom they had not known, nor had they divided spoils among them;

27 And the anger639 of the LORD3068 was kindled2734 against this1931 land,776 to bring935 on it all3605 the curses7045 that are written3789 in this2088 book:5612

27 Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this book;

28 And the LORD3068 rooted5428 them out of their land127 in anger,639 and in wrath,2534 and in great1419 indignation,7110 and cast7993 them into413 another312 land,776 as it is this2088 day.3117

28 And the LORD uprooted them from their land in anger and in wrath and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.

29 The secret5641 things belong to the LORD3068 our God:430 but those things which are revealed1540 belong to us and to our children1121 for ever,5769 that we may do6213 all3605 the words1697 of this2063 law.8451
