1 І сталось, коли закінчи́в Ісус усі ці слова, Він сказав Своїм учням:

2 „Ви знаєте, що через два дні буде Па́сха, — і Лю́дський Син буде виданий на розп'я́ття“.

3 Тоді первосвященики, і книжники, і старші народу зібралися в домі первосвященика, званого Кайя́фою,

4 і радилися, щоб пі́дступом взяти Ісуса й забити.

5 І вони говорили: „Та не в свято, щоб бува колотнеча в наро́ді не сталась“.

6 Коли ж Ісус був у Віфа́нії, у домі Си́мона прокаже́ного,

7 підійшла одна жінка до Нього, маючи аляба́строву пляшечку дорогоцінного ми́ра, — і вилила на Його голову, як сидів при столі Він.

8 Як побачили ж учні це, то обурилися та й сказали: „На́що таке марнотра́тство?

9 Бо дорого можна було б це продати, і віддати убогим“.

10 Зрозумівши Ісус, промовив до них: „Чого при́крість ви робите жінці? Вона ж добрий учинок зробила Мені.

11 Бо вбогих ви маєте за́вжди з собою, а Мене не постійно ви маєте.

12 Бо, виливши миро оце на тіло Моє, вона те вчинила на по́хорон Мій.

13 Поправді кажу́ вам: де тільки оця Єва́нгелія проповідувана буде в цілому світі, — на пам'ятку їй буде сказане й те, що зробила вона!“

14 Тоді один із Дванадцятьох, званий Юдою Іскаріотським, подався до первосвящеників,

15 і сказав: „Що́ хочете дати мені, — і я вам Його видам?“ І вони йому виплатили тридцять срібняків.

16 І він відтоді шукав слу́шного ча́су, щоб видати Його.

17 А першого дня Опрі́сноків учні підійшли до Ісуса й сказали Йому: „Де́ хочеш, щоб ми приготува́ли пасху спожити Тобі?

18 А Він відказав: „Ідіть до такого то в місто, і перекажіть йому: каже Вчитель: час Мій близьки́й, — справлю Пасху з Своїми учнями в тебе“.

19 І учні зробили, як звелів їм Ісус, і зачали́ пасху готува́ти.

20 А коли настав вечір, Він із дванадцятьма учнями сів за стіл.

21 І, як вони споживали, Він сказав: „Поправді кажу вам, що один із вас видасть Мене“.

22 А вони засмутилися тяжко, і кожен із них став питати Його: „Чи не я то, о Господи?“

23 А Він відповів і промовив: „Хто руку свою вмочить у миску зо Мною, той видасть Мене.

24 Людський Син справді йде, як про Нього написано; але горе тому чоловікові, що видасть Лю́дського Сина! Було́ б краще йому, коли б той чоловік не родився!“

25 Юда ж, зрадник Його, відповів і сказав: „Чи не я то, Учителю?“ Відказав Він йому: „Ти сказав“.

26 Як вони ж споживали, Ісус узяв хліб, і́ поблагословив, поламав, і давав Своїм учням, і сказав: „Прийміть, споживайте, це — тіло Моє“.

27 А взявши чашу, і подяку вчинивши, Він подав їм і сказав: „Пийте з неї всі,

28 бо це — кров Моя Ново́го Заповіту, що за багатьох проливається на відпу́щення гріхів!

29 Кажу́ ж вам, що віднині не питиму Я від оцього плоду виноградного аж до дня, коли з вами його нови́м питиму в Царстві Мого Отця“.

30 А коли відспівали вони, то на го́ру Оливну пішли.

31 Промовляє тоді їм Ісус: „Усі ви через Мене споку́ситеся ночі цієї. Бо написано: „Уражу́ Па́стиря, — і розпоро́шаться вівці отари“.

32 По воскре́сенні ж Своїм Я вас ви́переджу в Галілеї“.

33 А Петро відповів і сказав Йому: „Якби й усі спокуси́лись про Тебе, — я не спокушу́ся ніко́ли“.

34 Промовив до нього Ісус: „Поправді кажу́ тобі, що ночі цієї, перше ніж заспіває півень, — відречешся ти тричі від Мене“.

35 Говорить до Нього Петро: „Коли б мені навіть умерти з Тобою, — я не відречуся від Тебе!“ Так сказали й усі учні.

36 Тоді з ними приходить Ісус до місцевости, званої Гефсима́нія, і промовляє до учнів: „Посидьте ви тут, аж поки піду́ й помолюся отам“.

37 І, взявши Петра й двох синів Зеведе́євих, зачав сумувати й тужити.

38 Тоді промовляє до них: „Обго́рнена сумом смертельним душа Моя! Залиші́ться тут, і попильнуйте зо Мною“.

39 І, трохи далі пройшовши, упав Він долі́лиць, та молився й благав: „Отче Мій, коли можна, нехай обмине ця чаша Мене. Та проте, — не як Я хо́чу, а як Ти“.

40 І, вернувшись до учнів, знайшов їх, що спали, і промовив Петрові: „Отак, — не змогли ви й однієї години попильнувати зо Мною?

41 Пильнуйте й моліться, щоб не впасти на спробу, — бадьо́рий бо дух, але немічне тіло“.

42 Відійшовши ще вдруге, Він молився й благав: „Отче Мій, як ця чаша не може минути Мене, щоб не пити її, — нехай станеться воля Твоя!“

43 І, прийшовши, знову знайшов їх, що спали, бо зважні́ли їм очі були.

44 І, залиши́вши їх, знов пішов, і помолився втре́тє, те саме слово промовивши.

45 Потому приходить до учнів і їм промовляє: „Ви ще далі спите й спочиваєте? Ось година набли́зилась, — і до рук грішникам виданий буде Син Лю́дський.

46 Уставайте, ходім, — ось наблизи́вся Мій зра́дник!“

47 І коли Він іще говорив, аж ось прийшов Юда, один із Дванадцятьо́х, а з ним люду багато від первосвящеників і старших наро́ду з мечами та ки́ями.

48 А зрадник Його дав був знака їм, кажучи: „Кого поцілую, то Він, — беріть Його“.

49 І зараз Він підійшов до Ісуса й сказав: Раді́й, Учителю!“ І поцілував Його.

50 Ісус же йому відказав: „Чого, друже, прийшов ти?“ Тоді приступили та руки наклали на Ісуса, — і схопи́ли Його.

51 А ось один із тих, що з Ісусом були́, витягнув руку, і меча свого ви́хопив та й рубону́в раба первосвященика, — і відтяв йому вухо.

52 Тоді промовляє до нього Ісус: „Сховай свого меча в його місце, бо всі, хто ві́зьме меча, — від меча і загинуть.

53 Чи ти ду́маєш, що не мо́жу тепер упросити Свого Отця, — і Він дасть Мені зараз більше дванадцяти леґіо́нів анголі́в?

54 Але як має збутись Писа́ння, що так статися мусить?“

55 Тієї години промовив Ісус до наро́ду: „Немов на розбійника вийшли з мечами та ки́ями, щоб узяти Мене! Я щоденно у храмі сидів і навчав, — і Мене не взяли́ ви.

56 Це ж сталось усе, щоб збулися писа́ння пророків“. Усі учні тоді залишили Його й повтікали.

57 А вони схопи́ли Ісуса, і повели́ до первосвященика Кайяфи, де зібралися книжники й старші.

58 Петро ж зда́лека йшов услід за Ним аж до дво́ру первосвященика, і, ввійшовши всере́дину, сів із слу́жбою, щоб бачити кінець.

59 А первосвященики та ввесь синедріо́н шукали на Ісуса неправдивого свідчення, щоб смерть заподіяти Йому,

60 і не знахо́дили, хоч кривосвідків багато підхо́дило. Аж ось накінець з'явилися двоє,

61 і сказали: „Він говорив: Я можу зруйнувати храм Божий, — і за три дні збудувати його“.

62 Тоді первосвященик устав і до Нього сказав: „Ти нічого не відповідаєш на те, що свідчать су́проти Тебе?“

63 Ісус же мовчав. І первосвященик сказав Йому: „Заприсягаю Тебе Живим Богом, щоб нам Ти сказав, — чи Христос Ти, Син Божий?“

64 Промовляє до нього Ісус: „Ти сказав... А навіть повім вам: відтепе́р ви побачите Лю́дського Сина, що сидітиме право́руч сили Божої, і на хмарах небесних прихо́дитиме!“

65 Тоді первосвященик розде́р одежу свою та й сказав: „Він богознева́жив! На́що нам іще свідки потрібні? Ось ви чули тепер Його богознева́гу!

66 Як вам здається?“ Вони ж відповіли та сказали: „Повинен умерти!“

67 Тоді стали плювати на обличчя Йому, та бити по що́ках Його, інші ж ки́ями били,

68 і казали: „Пророкуй нам, Христе́, хто́ то вдарив Тебе?“

69 А Петро перед домом сидів на подвір'ї. І приступила до Нього служни́ця одна та й сказала: „І ти був з Ісусом Галіле́янином!“

70 А він перед всіма́ відрікся, сказавши: „Не відаю я, що ти кажеш“.

71 А коли до воріт він підхо́див, побачила інша його та й сказала приявним там людям: „Оцей був з Ісусом Назаряни́ном!“

72 І він зно́ву відрікся та став присягатись: „Не знаю Цього Чоловіка!“

73 Підійшли ж трохи згодом присутні й сказали Петрові: „І ти справді з отих, та й мова твоя виявляє тебе“.

74 Тоді він став клясти́сь та божитись: „Не знаю Цього́ Чоловіка!“ І заспівав півень хвилі тієї.

75 І згадав Петро сказане слово Ісусове: „Перше ніж заспіває півень, — відречешся ти тричі від Мене“. І, вийшовши звідти, він гірко заплакав.

Chapter 26

1 WHEN Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples,

2 You know that after two days will be the passover, and the Son of man will be betrayed to be crucified.

3 Then the high priests and the scribes and the elders of the people assembled in the court yard of the high priest, who is called Caiaphas.

4 And they took counsel concerning Jesus, to arrest him by a snare and kill him.

5 And they said, Not on the feast day, so as not to cause a riot among the people.

6 And when Jesus was at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,

7 A woman came up to him with an alabaster vessel of precious perfume, and she poured it upon the head of Jesus, while he was reclining.

8 When his disciples saw it, they were dis- pleased, and said, Why is this loss?

9 For it could have been sold for a great deal, and given to the poor.

10 But Jesus understood it and said to them, Why are you troubling the woman? She has done a good work to me.

11 For you always have the poor with you, but you will not have me always.

12 But this one who poured the perfume on my body, did it as for my burial.

13 And truly I say to you, Wherever this my gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told as a memorial to her.

14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas of Iscariot, went to the high priests;

15 And he said to them, What are you willing to give me, and I will deliver him to you? And they promised him thirty pieces of silver.

16 And from that time he sought an opportunity to betray him.

17 On the first day of unleavened bread, the disciples came up to Jesus and said to him, Where do you wish that we may prepare the passover for you to eat?

18 And he said to them, Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, Our Master says, My time has come, I will observe the passover with my disciples at your house.

19 And his disciples did as Jesus had commanded them; and they prepared the passover.

20 And when it was evening, he was reclining with his twelve disciples.

21 And while they were eating he said, Truly I say to you, that one of you will betray me.

22 And they felt very sad, and began to say to him one by one, Why, is it I, my Lord?

23 And he answered and said, He who dips his hand with me in the dish, he will betray me.

24 The Son of man is going through, just as it is written concerning him; but woe to the man by whose hand the Son of man is betrayed! it would have been far better for that man never to have been born.

25 Then Judas the traitor answered and said, Master, perhaps it is I? Jesus said to him, You say that.

26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread and blessed it, and he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and he said, Take, eat; this is my body.

27 Then he took the cup and gave thanks, and gave it to them and said, Take, drink of it, all of you.

28 This is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

29 But I say to you, from now on I shall not drink from this fruit of the vine, until the day when I drink it anew with you in the kingdom of God.

30 And they offered praise, and went out to the Mount of Olives.

31 Then Jesus said to them, All of you will deny me this night; for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of his flock will be scattered.

32 But after I am risen, I will be in Galilee before you.

33 Peter answered and said to him, Even if every man should deny you, I will never deny you.

34 Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you, that in this very night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.

35 Peter said to him, Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you. All the disciples said likewise.

36 Then Jesus came with them to a place which is called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, Sit down here, while I go to pray.

37 And he took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and he began to be sorrowful and oppressed.

38 He said to them, My soul is sorrowful even to death; wait for me here, and watch with me.

39 And he went a little further and fell on his face, and prayed saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; but let it be, not as I will, but as you.

40 Then he came to his disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, So, you were not able to watch with me even for one hour?

41 Awake and pray, that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is ready, but the body is weak.

42 He went away again the second time and prayed and said, O my Father, if this cup cannot pass, and if I have to drink it, let it be according to your will.

43 He came again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

44 And he left them and went away again and prayed the third time, and he said the same word.

45 Then he came to his disciples and said to them, Sleep from now on and get your rest; behold, the hour has come, and the Son of man will be delivered into the hands of sinners.

46 Arise, let us go; behold, he who is to deliver me has arrived.

47 While he was speaking, behold, Judas the traitor, one of the twelve, came and with him a large crowd with swords and staves, from the high priests and the elders of the people.

48 Now Judas the traitor had given them a sign, saying, He whom I kiss, it is he, arrest him.

49 And immediately he came up to Jesus and said, Peace, Master; and he kissed him.

50 Jesus said to him, Is it for this that you have come, my friend? Then they came near and laid hands on Jesus, and arrested him.

51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew a sword, and struck it at the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

52 Then Jesus said to him, Return the sword to its place; for all who take swords will die by swords.

53 Or do you think that I cannot ask of my Father, and he will now raise up for me more than twelve legions of angels?

54 How then could the scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?

55 At that very hour Jesus said to the people, Have you come out with swords and staves to arrest me like a bandit? I sat with you every day, teaching in the temple, and you did not arrest me.

56 But this has happened so that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples left him, and fled.

57 And those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had assembled.

58 But Simon Peter followed him afar off, up to the courtyard of the high priest, and he went inside and sat with the soldiers, to see the end.

59 Now the high priests and the elders and the whole council were seeking witnesses against Jesus, so that they might put him to death.

60 But they could not find any; then there came a great many false witnesses; but at the end two came forward,

61 And said, This man said, I can tear down the temple of God, and build it in three days.

62 And the high priest stood up and said to him, You are not answering anything. What is it that these men testify against you?

63 But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest answered and said to him, I adjure you by the living God, to tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God?

64 Jesus said to him, You say that. But I say to you that from henceforth you will see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of the power, and coming upon the clouds of the sky.

65 The high priest then rent his clothes and said, Behold, he is blaspheming; why therefore do we need witnesses? behold, you have now heard his blasphemy.

66 What else do you want? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.

67 Then they spat in his face, and struck him on his head, and others beat him,

68 Saying, O Christ, prophesy to us; who smote you?

69 Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard; and a maidservant came up to him, and said to him, You also were with Jesus the Nazarene.

70 But he denied it before all of them, and said, I do not understand what you are saying.

71 And as he was going to the porch, another one saw him, and she said to them, This man was also there with Jesus the Nazarene.

72 Again he denied it with oaths, I do not know the man.

73 After a while, those who were standing came up, and said to Peter, Truly you also are one of them, for even your speech proves it.

74 Then he began to curse and to swear, I do not know the man. At that very hour the cock crowed.

75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which he had said to him, Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times. And he went outside and wept bitterly.

5 And they said, Not on the feast day, so as not to cause a riot among the people.

6 And when Jesus was at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,

7 підійшла одна жінка до Нього, маючи аляба́строву пляшечку дорогоцінного ми́ра, — і вилила на Його голову, як сидів при столі Він.

7 A woman came up to him with an alabaster vessel of precious perfume, and she poured it upon the head of Jesus, while he was reclining.

8 Як побачили ж учні це, то обурилися та й сказали: „На́що таке марнотра́тство?

8 When his disciples saw it, they were dis- pleased, and said, Why is this loss?

9 Бо дорого можна було б це продати, і віддати убогим“.

9 For it could have been sold for a great deal, and given to the poor.

10 Зрозумівши Ісус, промовив до них: „Чого при́крість ви робите жінці? Вона ж добрий учинок зробила Мені.

10 But Jesus understood it and said to them, Why are you troubling the woman? She has done a good work to me.

11 Бо вбогих ви маєте за́вжди з собою, а Мене не постійно ви маєте.

11 For you always have the poor with you, but you will not have me always.

12 Бо, виливши миро оце на тіло Моє, вона те вчинила на по́хорон Мій.

12 But this one who poured the perfume on my body, did it as for my burial.

13 Поправді кажу́ вам: де тільки оця Єва́нгелія проповідувана буде в цілому світі, — на пам'ятку їй буде сказане й те, що зробила вона!“

13 And truly I say to you, Wherever this my gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told as a memorial to her.

14 Тоді один із Дванадцятьох, званий Юдою Іскаріотським, подався до первосвящеників,

14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas of Iscariot, went to the high priests;

15 і сказав: „Що́ хочете дати мені, — і я вам Його видам?“ І вони йому виплатили тридцять срібняків.

15 And he said to them, What are you willing to give me, and I will deliver him to you? And they promised him thirty pieces of silver.

18 And he said to them, Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, Our Master says, My time has come, I will observe the passover with my disciples at your house.

19 І учні зробили, як звелів їм Ісус, і зачали́ пасху готува́ти.

19 And his disciples did as Jesus had commanded them; and they prepared the passover.

20 And when it was evening, he was reclining with his twelve disciples.

21 І, як вони споживали, Він сказав: „Поправді кажу вам, що один із вас видасть Мене“.

21 And while they were eating he said, Truly I say to you, that one of you will betray me.

22 А вони засмутилися тяжко, і кожен із них став питати Його: „Чи не я то, о Господи?“

22 And they felt very sad, and began to say to him one by one, Why, is it I, my Lord?

23 А Він відповів і промовив: „Хто руку свою вмочить у миску зо Мною, той видасть Мене.

23 And he answered and said, He who dips his hand with me in the dish, he will betray me.

24 Людський Син справді йде, як про Нього написано; але горе тому чоловікові, що видасть Лю́дського Сина! Було́ б краще йому, коли б той чоловік не родився!“

24 The Son of man is going through, just as it is written concerning him; but woe to the man by whose hand the Son of man is betrayed! it would have been far better for that man never to have been born.

25 Юда ж, зрадник Його, відповів і сказав: „Чи не я то, Учителю?“ Відказав Він йому: „Ти сказав“.

25 Then Judas the traitor answered and said, Master, perhaps it is I? Jesus said to him, You say that.

26 Як вони ж споживали, Ісус узяв хліб, і́ поблагословив, поламав, і давав Своїм учням, і сказав: „Прийміть, споживайте, це — тіло Моє“.

26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread and blessed it, and he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and he said, Take, eat; this is my body.

27 А взявши чашу, і подяку вчинивши, Він подав їм і сказав: „Пийте з неї всі,

27 Then he took the cup and gave thanks, and gave it to them and said, Take, drink of it, all of you.

28 бо це — кров Моя Ново́го Заповіту, що за багатьох проливається на відпу́щення гріхів!

28 This is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

29 Кажу́ ж вам, що віднині не питиму Я від оцього плоду виноградного аж до дня, коли з вами його нови́м питиму в Царстві Мого Отця“.

29 But I say to you, from now on I shall not drink from this fruit of the vine, until the day when I drink it anew with you in the kingdom of God.

30 А коли відспівали вони, то на го́ру Оливну пішли.

30 And they offered praise, and went out to the Mount of Olives.

31 Промовляє тоді їм Ісус: „Усі ви через Мене споку́ситеся ночі цієї. Бо написано: „Уражу́ Па́стиря, — і розпоро́шаться вівці отари“.

31 Then Jesus said to them, All of you will deny me this night; for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of his flock will be scattered.

32 But after I am risen, I will be in Galilee before you.

33 А Петро відповів і сказав Йому: „Якби й усі спокуси́лись про Тебе, — я не спокушу́ся ніко́ли“.

33 Peter answered and said to him, Even if every man should deny you, I will never deny you.

34 Промовив до нього Ісус: „Поправді кажу́ тобі, що ночі цієї, перше ніж заспіває півень, — відречешся ти тричі від Мене“.

34 Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you, that in this very night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.

35 Говорить до Нього Петро: „Коли б мені навіть умерти з Тобою, — я не відречуся від Тебе!“ Так сказали й усі учні.

35 Peter said to him, Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you. All the disciples said likewise.

36 Тоді з ними приходить Ісус до місцевости, званої Гефсима́нія, і промовляє до учнів: „Посидьте ви тут, аж поки піду́ й помолюся отам“.

36 Then Jesus came with them to a place which is called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, Sit down here, while I go to pray.

37 І, взявши Петра й двох синів Зеведе́євих, зачав сумувати й тужити.

37 And he took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and he began to be sorrowful and oppressed.

38 Тоді промовляє до них: „Обго́рнена сумом смертельним душа Моя! Залиші́ться тут, і попильнуйте зо Мною“.

38 He said to them, My soul is sorrowful even to death; wait for me here, and watch with me.

39 І, трохи далі пройшовши, упав Він долі́лиць, та молився й благав: „Отче Мій, коли можна, нехай обмине ця чаша Мене. Та проте, — не як Я хо́чу, а як Ти“.

39 And he went a little further and fell on his face, and prayed saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; but let it be, not as I will, but as you.

40 І, вернувшись до учнів, знайшов їх, що спали, і промовив Петрові: „Отак, — не змогли ви й однієї години попильнувати зо Мною?

40 Then he came to his disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, So, you were not able to watch with me even for one hour?

41 Пильнуйте й моліться, щоб не впасти на спробу, — бадьо́рий бо дух, але немічне тіло“.

41 Awake and pray, that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is ready, but the body is weak.

42 Відійшовши ще вдруге, Він молився й благав: „Отче Мій, як ця чаша не може минути Мене, щоб не пити її, — нехай станеться воля Твоя!“

42 He went away again the second time and prayed and said, O my Father, if this cup cannot pass, and if I have to drink it, let it be according to your will.

43 І, прийшовши, знову знайшов їх, що спали, бо зважні́ли їм очі були.

43 He came again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

44 І, залиши́вши їх, знов пішов, і помолився втре́тє, те саме слово промовивши.

44 And he left them and went away again and prayed the third time, and he said the same word.

45 Потому приходить до учнів і їм промовляє: „Ви ще далі спите й спочиваєте? Ось година набли́зилась, — і до рук грішникам виданий буде Син Лю́дський.

45 Then he came to his disciples and said to them, Sleep from now on and get your rest; behold, the hour has come, and the Son of man will be delivered into the hands of sinners.

46 Уставайте, ходім, — ось наблизи́вся Мій зра́дник!“

46 Arise, let us go; behold, he who is to deliver me has arrived.

47 І коли Він іще говорив, аж ось прийшов Юда, один із Дванадцятьо́х, а з ним люду багато від первосвящеників і старших наро́ду з мечами та ки́ями.

47 While he was speaking, behold, Judas the traitor, one of the twelve, came and with him a large crowd with swords and staves, from the high priests and the elders of the people.

48 А зрадник Його дав був знака їм, кажучи: „Кого поцілую, то Він, — беріть Його“.

48 Now Judas the traitor had given them a sign, saying, He whom I kiss, it is he, arrest him.

49 І зараз Він підійшов до Ісуса й сказав: Раді́й, Учителю!“ І поцілував Його.

49 And immediately he came up to Jesus and said, Peace, Master; and he kissed him.

50 Ісус же йому відказав: „Чого, друже, прийшов ти?“ Тоді приступили та руки наклали на Ісуса, — і схопи́ли Його.

50 Jesus said to him, Is it for this that you have come, my friend? Then they came near and laid hands on Jesus, and arrested him.

51 А ось один із тих, що з Ісусом були́, витягнув руку, і меча свого ви́хопив та й рубону́в раба первосвященика, — і відтяв йому вухо.

51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew a sword, and struck it at the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

52 Тоді промовляє до нього Ісус: „Сховай свого меча в його місце, бо всі, хто ві́зьме меча, — від меча і загинуть.

52 Then Jesus said to him, Return the sword to its place; for all who take swords will die by swords.

53 Чи ти ду́маєш, що не мо́жу тепер упросити Свого Отця, — і Він дасть Мені зараз більше дванадцяти леґіо́нів анголі́в?

53 Or do you think that I cannot ask of my Father, and he will now raise up for me more than twelve legions of angels?

54 Але як має збутись Писа́ння, що так статися мусить?“

54 How then could the scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?

55 Тієї години промовив Ісус до наро́ду: „Немов на розбійника вийшли з мечами та ки́ями, щоб узяти Мене! Я щоденно у храмі сидів і навчав, — і Мене не взяли́ ви.

55 At that very hour Jesus said to the people, Have you come out with swords and staves to arrest me like a bandit? I sat with you every day, teaching in the temple, and you did not arrest me.

56 Це ж сталось усе, щоб збулися писа́ння пророків“. Усі учні тоді залишили Його й повтікали.

56 But this has happened so that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples left him, and fled.

57 А вони схопи́ли Ісуса, і повели́ до первосвященика Кайяфи, де зібралися книжники й старші.

57 And those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had assembled.

58 Петро ж зда́лека йшов услід за Ним аж до дво́ру первосвященика, і, ввійшовши всере́дину, сів із слу́жбою, щоб бачити кінець.

58 But Simon Peter followed him afar off, up to the courtyard of the high priest, and he went inside and sat with the soldiers, to see the end.

59 А первосвященики та ввесь синедріо́н шукали на Ісуса неправдивого свідчення, щоб смерть заподіяти Йому,

59 Now the high priests and the elders and the whole council were seeking witnesses against Jesus, so that they might put him to death.

60 і не знахо́дили, хоч кривосвідків багато підхо́дило. Аж ось накінець з'явилися двоє,

60 But they could not find any; then there came a great many false witnesses; but at the end two came forward,

61 і сказали: „Він говорив: Я можу зруйнувати храм Божий, — і за три дні збудувати його“.

61 And said, This man said, I can tear down the temple of God, and build it in three days.

62 Тоді первосвященик устав і до Нього сказав: „Ти нічого не відповідаєш на те, що свідчать су́проти Тебе?“

62 And the high priest stood up and said to him, You are not answering anything. What is it that these men testify against you?

63 Ісус же мовчав. І первосвященик сказав Йому: „Заприсягаю Тебе Живим Богом, щоб нам Ти сказав, — чи Христос Ти, Син Божий?“

63 But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest answered and said to him, I adjure you by the living God, to tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God?

64 Промовляє до нього Ісус: „Ти сказав... А навіть повім вам: відтепе́р ви побачите Лю́дського Сина, що сидітиме право́руч сили Божої, і на хмарах небесних прихо́дитиме!“

64 Jesus said to him, You say that. But I say to you that from henceforth you will see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of the power, and coming upon the clouds of the sky.

65 Тоді первосвященик розде́р одежу свою та й сказав: „Він богознева́жив! На́що нам іще свідки потрібні? Ось ви чули тепер Його богознева́гу!

65 The high priest then rent his clothes and said, Behold, he is blaspheming; why therefore do we need witnesses? behold, you have now heard his blasphemy.

66 Як вам здається?“ Вони ж відповіли та сказали: „Повинен умерти!“

66 What else do you want? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.

67 Тоді стали плювати на обличчя Йому, та бити по що́ках Його, інші ж ки́ями били,

67 Then they spat in his face, and struck him on his head, and others beat him,

68 і казали: „Пророкуй нам, Христе́, хто́ то вдарив Тебе?“

68 Saying, O Christ, prophesy to us; who smote you?

69 А Петро перед домом сидів на подвір'ї. І приступила до Нього служни́ця одна та й сказала: „І ти був з Ісусом Галіле́янином!“

69 Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard; and a maidservant came up to him, and said to him, You also were with Jesus the Nazarene.

70 А він перед всіма́ відрікся, сказавши: „Не відаю я, що ти кажеш“.

70 But he denied it before all of them, and said, I do not understand what you are saying.

71 А коли до воріт він підхо́див, побачила інша його та й сказала приявним там людям: „Оцей був з Ісусом Назаряни́ном!“

71 And as he was going to the porch, another one saw him, and she said to them, This man was also there with Jesus the Nazarene.

72 І він зно́ву відрікся та став присягатись: „Не знаю Цього Чоловіка!“

72 Again he denied it with oaths, I do not know the man.

73 Підійшли ж трохи згодом присутні й сказали Петрові: „І ти справді з отих, та й мова твоя виявляє тебе“.

73 After a while, those who were standing came up, and said to Peter, Truly you also are one of them, for even your speech proves it.

74 Тоді він став клясти́сь та божитись: „Не знаю Цього́ Чоловіка!“ І заспівав півень хвилі тієї.

74 Then he began to curse and to swear, I do not know the man. At that very hour the cock crowed.

75 І згадав Петро сказане слово Ісусове: „Перше ніж заспіває півень, — відречешся ти тричі від Мене“. І, вийшовши звідти, він гірко заплакав.

75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which he had said to him, Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times. And he went outside and wept bitterly.
