Chapter 2

1 AND in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed a dream and his spirit was troub1ed and his sleep departed from him.

2 Then the king commanded to call the magicians and the astrologers and the sorcerers and the Chaldeans to show the king his dream. So they came and stood before the king.

3 And the king said to them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit is troubled to know the dream.

4 Then spoke the Chaldeans before the king in Aramaic, saying, O king, live for ever; tell your servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation.

5 The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The word that I have spoken is true; if you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you shall be cut in pieces and your houses shall be plundered.

6 But if you show me the dream and its interpretation, you shall receive from me gifts and wealth and great honor; only show me the dream and its interpretation.

7 They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will show its interpretation.

8 The king answered and said, Truly I know that what you want is time, because you see that my word is true.

9 But if you will not make known to me the dream, there is but one sentence for you; for you have prepared lying words and falsehoods to speak before me, to gain time; therefore tell me the dream, so that I shall know that you can show me its interpretation.

10 The Chaldeans answered before the king and said, There is not a man upon the earth who can reveal what the king asks; neither has any great king or ruler ever asked such a thing of any magician or astrologer or Chaldean.

11 For the thing that the king is asking is very difficult, and there is no man who can show it before the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with men born of flesh.

12 Then the king was exceedingly furious, and he commanded angrily that all the wise men of Babylon should be destroyed.

13 And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and guards sought Daniel and his companions to slay them.

14 Then Daniel meditated and took counsel, and then said to Arioch the commander of the king's guardsmen, who had gone out to slay the wise men of Babylon,

15 Why is this decree from the king so urgent? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.

16 Then Daniel desired of the king to give him time, and promised that he would show the king the interpretation.

17 Then Daniel went to his house and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions,

18 That they might ask mercy before the God of heaven concerning the mystery, so that Daniel and his companions might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

19 Then was the mystery, revealed to Daniel in a night vision. And Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever; for wisdom and might belong to him;

21 And he changes seasons and times; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to them who know understanding;

22 He reveals the deep and secret things; he knows what is in the darkness, and the light is with him.

23 To thee, O God of my fathers, I give thanks, and I praise thee, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast now made known to me what we desired of thee; for thou hast made known to us the king's matter.

24 And in that very hour Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had ordered to destroy the wise men of Babylon; he went and spoke thus to him: Destroy not the wise men of Babylon; but bring me in before the king and I will show the king the interpretation.

25 Then Arioch brought Daniel in before the king in haste, and spoke thus to him: I have found a man of the captives of Judah who will make known to the king the interpretation.

26 The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Are you able to make known to me the dream which I have seen, and its interpretation?

27 Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The mystery which the king has demanded to know, can no wise men, sorcerers, nor the magicians, nor the astrologers reveal to the king;

28 But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, who has made known to the King Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Your dream and the vision of your head upon your bed are these;

29 As for you, O king, your thoughts came into your mind concerning what shall come to pass hereafter; and he who reveals mysteries has made known to you what shall come to pass.

30 But as for me, this mystery is not revealed to me on account of any wisdom that I have more than any living person, but for the sake of the interpretation, that it might be known to the king and that you may know the thoughts of your heart.

31 You, O king, were looking, and behold, a great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before you; and its appearance was terrible.

32 This image's head was of fine gold, its breast and arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of brass,

33 Its legs of iron, its feet part of iron and part of clay.

34 Then you saw that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon its feet that were of iron and clay, and broke them to pieces.

35 Then the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold were all broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and a strong wind carried them away so that no place was found for them; and the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.

36 This is the dream; now I will tell its interpretation before the king.

37 You, O king, are a king of kings; for the God of heaven has given you a mighty kingdom and honor.

38 And every country in which men dwell, the fowls of the air and the beasts of the field, he has placed under your authority, and has made you ruler over them all. You are the head of gold.

39 And after you shall arise another kingdom inferior to you, and a third kingdom of brass, which shall rule over all the earth.

40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron; for just as iron hammers and breaks everything in pieces, so shall it break and conquer every kingdom.

41 And whereas you saw the feet and toes, part of potter's clay and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it some of the strength of iron, just as you saw the iron mixed with miry clay.

42 And as for the toes of the feet which you saw, part of iron and part of clay, so some parts of the kingdom shall be strong and some parts weak.

43 And whereas you saw iron mixed with miry clay, so they shall mix themselves with one another in marriage; but they shall not cleave one to another, just as iron does not mix with clay.

44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up an everlasting kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and bring to an end all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

45 Forasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God has made known to you what shall come to pass in the latter days. The dream is true, and its interpretation is sure.

46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer incense and sacrifices to him.

47 The king answered Daniel and said, Truly, your God is the God of gods and the LORD of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this mystery.

48 Then the king advanced Daniel's rank and gave him a great many gifts and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon and appointed him chief over all the generals of the armies and over all the wise men of Babylon.

49 Then Daniel requested of the king, and he appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego over the affairs of the province of Babylon; but Daniel himself remained in the king's gate.

2 Und er4428 hieß7121 alle Sternseher, und Weisen und Zauberer2748 und Chaldäer3778 zusammenfordern, daß sie5046 dem Könige4428 seinen Traum2472 sagen559 sollten. Und sie kamen935 und traten5975 vor6440 den König4428.

3 Und7307 der König4428 sprach559 zu ihnen: Ich habe einen Traum2472 gehabt, der hat2492 mich erschreckt; und ich wollte gerne wissen3045, was es für ein Traum2472 gewesen sei.

4 Da sprachen1696 die Chaldäer3778 zum Könige4430 auf chaldäisch762: Herr König4428, GOtt verleihe dir langes Leben! Sage deinen Knechten5649 den Traum2493, so wollen wir560 ihn6591 deuten2324.

5 Der König4430 antwortete6032 und sprach560 zu den Chaldäern3779: Es4406 ist7761 mir4481 entfallen230. Werdet2006 ihr mir den Traum2493 nicht3809 anzeigen3046 und ihn6591 deuten, so werdet ihr gar umkommen und eure Häuser1005 schändlich5122 verstöret werden.

6 Werdet ihr mir6925 aber2006 den Traum2493 anzeigen2324 und deuten6591, so sollt ihr Geschenke, Gaben4978 und große7690 Ehre3367 von mir haben6902. Darum3861 so sagt mir den Traum2493 und seine Deutung6591!

7 Sie antworteten6032 wiederum8579 und sprachen560: Der König4430 sage seinen Knechten5649 den Traum2493, so wollen2324 wir560 ihn6591 deuten.

8 Der König4430 antwortete6032 und sprach: Wahrlich, ich576 merke3046 es4406, daß ihr608 Frist5732 suchet, weil ihr sehet, daß mir4481‘s entfallen ist230.

9 Aber2006 werdet ihr mir nicht3809 den1768 Traum2493 sagen3046, so gehet das Recht1882 über euch, als die ihr Lügen3538 und Gedichte7844 vor6925 mir zu reden560 vorgenommen habt2164, bis die Zeit5732 vorübergehe8133. Darum3861 so sagt mir den Traum2493, so kann3046 ich merken, daß5705 ihr auch die Deutung6591 treffet.

10 Da antworteten6032 die1768 Chaldäer3779 vor6925 dem Könige4430 und5922 sprachen560 zu ihm: Es4406 ist383 kein3809 Mensch606 auf Erden3007, der sagen2324 könne3202, das der König4430 fordert4406. So1836 ist auch kein3809 König4430, wie3606 groß7229 oder mächtig7990 er sei, der solches von irgendeinem Sternseher826, Weisen2749 oder Chaldäer3779 fordere7593.

11 Denn das der König4430 fordert7593, ist383 zu hoch3358, und4070 ist383 auch sonst321 niemand3809, der es4406 vor6925 dem Könige4430 sagen2324 könne, ausgenommen3861 die Götter426, die bei5974 den Menschen1321 nicht3809 wohnen.

12 Da ward der König4430 sehr zornig1149 und1836 befahl7108, alle3606 Weisen2445 zu6903 Babel895 umzubringen7.

13 Und das Urteil1882 ging aus5312, daß man die Weisen2445 töten6992 sollte6992. Und Daniel1841 samt seinen Gesellen2269 ward auch gesucht1156, daß man sie tötete.

14 Da116 vernahm Daniel1841 solch Urteil und Befehl2942 von dem obersten7229 Richter2877 des Königs4430, welcher auszog5312, zu töten6992 die1768 Weisen2445 zu Babel895.

15 Und5922 er fing an6032 und116 sprach560 zu des Königs4430 Vogt7990 Arioch746: Warum ist so ein streng Urteil1882 vom Könige4430 ausgegangen? Und Arioch746 zeigte3046 es4406 dem Daniel1841 an.

16 Da4481 ging5954 Daniel1841 hinauf und bat1156 den König4430, daß er ihm Frist2166 gäbe5415, damit er die Deutung6591 dem Könige4430 sagen2324 möchte.

17 Und116 Daniel1841 ging236 heim1005 und zeigte3046 solches4406 an seinen Gesellen2269, Hananja2608, Misael4333 und Asarja5839,

19 Da116 ward Daniel1841 solch verborgen Ding7328 durch ein Gesicht2376 des Nachts3916 offenbaret.

20 Darüber lobte1289 Daniel1841 den GOtt426 vom Himmel, fing an6032 und sprach560: Gelobet sei1934 der Name8036 Gottes von4481 Ewigkeit5957 zu Ewigkeit5957; denn sein1932 ist beides, Weisheit2452 und Stärke1370!

21 Er ändert8133 Zeit5732 und Stunde2166; er setzt6966 Könige4430 ab5709 und setzt Könige4430 ein; er gibt3052 den Weisen2445 ihre Weisheit2452 und den Verständigen999 ihren Verstand4486;

22 er offenbaret, was4101 tief5994 und verborgen5642 ist8271; er weiß3046, was in Finsternis2816 liegt; denn bei5974 ihm ist eitel Licht5094.

23 Ich576 danke3029 dir und lobe7624 dich, GOtt426 meiner Väter2, daß du mir4481 Weisheit2452 und Stärke1370 verleihest und jetzt3705 offenbaret hast3046, darum wir dich gebeten haben3052; nämlich du hast3046 uns des Königs4430 Sache4406 offenbaret.

24 Da ging5954 Daniel1841 hinauf zu3652 Arioch746, der vom Könige4430 Befehl hatte4483, die Weisen2445 zu Babel895 umzubringen7, und5922 sprach560 zu ihm6925 also1836: Du sollst die Weisen2445 zu Babel895 nicht409 umbringen, sondern führe mich hinauf zum Könige4430, ich will dem Könige4430 die Deutung6591 sagen2324.

25 Arioch746 brachte5954 Daniel1841 eilends927 hinauf vor6925 den König4430 und116 sprach560 zu ihm also3652: Es ist einer1400 funden unter den Gefangenen aus4481 Juda3061, der dem Könige4430 die Deutung6591 sagen3046 kann.

26 Der König4430 antwortete6032 und sprach560 zu Daniel1841, den sie Beltsazar1096 hießen8036: Bist du383, der mir den Traum2493, den ich gesehen habe2370 und seine Deutung6591 zeigen kann3046?

27 Daniel1841 fing an6032 vor6925 dem Könige4430 und sprach560: Das verborgene Ding7328, das der König4430 fordert7593 von den Weisen2445, Gelehrten2749, Sternsehern und Wahrsagern1505, stehet in ihrem Vermögen3202 nicht3809, dem Könige4430 zu sagen2324,

28 sondern GOtt426 vom Himmel8065, der kann383 verborgene Dinge7328 offenbaren1541; der hat dem5922 Könige4430 Nebukadnezar5020 angezeiget, was4101 in künftigen320 Zeiten3118 geschehen soll1934.

29 Dein Traum und5922 dein Gesicht, da du607 schliefest4903, kam daher: Du, König4430, dachtest7476 auf deinem Bette, wie4101 es doch hernach gehen würde5559; und der, so1836 verborgene Dinge7328 offenbaret, hat dir angezeiget, wie4101 es gehen werde1934.

30 So576 ist383 mir solch verborgen Ding7328 offenbaret, nicht3809 durch meine Weisheit2452, als wäre sie größer denn aller3606, die da4481 leben2417, sondern darum3861, daß5922 dem Könige4430 die Deutung6591 angezeiget würde3046, und1836 du deines Herzens3825 Gedanken7476 erführest.

31 Du607, König4430, sahst, und7299 siehe431, ein sehr3493 groß7229 und hoch Bild6755 stund vor dir6903, das7690 war1934 schrecklich anzusehen1763.

32 Desselben Bildes6755 Haupt7217 war von feinem2869 Golde1722; seine Brust2306 und Arme1872 waren von Silber3702; sein Bauch4577 und Lenden3410 waren von Erz5174;

33 seine Schenkel8243 waren Eisen6523; seine Füße7271 waren eines4481 Teils Eisen6523 und eines4481 Teils Ton2635.

34 Solches sahst du2370, bis daß ein Stein69 herabgerissen ward1505 ohne3809 Hände3028; der schlug4223 das Bild6755 an5705 seine Füße7271, die Eisen6523 und5922 Ton2635 waren, und zermalmete sie1994.

35 Da116 wurden1934 miteinander zermalmet das Eisen6523, Ton2635, Erz5174, Silber3702 und Gold1722 und wurden wie Spreu5784 auf der Sommertenne147; und der Wind7308 verwebte sie1994, daß man1934 sie nirgends3809 mehr3606 finden7912 konnte. Der Stein69 aber, der das Bild6755 schlug4223, ward ein2298 großer7229 Berg2906, daß er die ganze3606 Welt772 füllete.

36 Das1836 ist der Traum2493. Nun wollen wir560 die Deutung6591 vor6925 dem Könige4430 sagen.

37 Du607, König4430, bist ein König4430 aller Könige4430, dem GOtt426 vom Himmel8065 Königreich4437, Macht2632, Stärke8632 und Ehre3367 gegeben hat3052

38 und alles3606 da Leute1123 wohnen1753, dazu die Tiere2423 auf dem Felde1251 und die Vögel5776 unter dem Himmel8065 in deine Hände3028 gegeben und dir über alles3606 Gewalt7981 verliehen hat3052. Du607 bist das güldene Haupt7217.

39 Nach870 dir wird ein ander Königreich4437 aufkommen6966, geringer772 denn deines. Danach das dritte8523 Königreich4437, das ehern ist4481, welches wird über alle3606 Lande772 herrschen7981.

40 Das vierte7244 wird hart8624 sein1934 wie459 Eisen6523. Denn gleichwie Eisen6523 alles3606 zermalmet und zerschlägt2827, ja6903, wie Eisen6523 alles3606 zerbricht7490, also wird es auch alles zermalmen1855 und zerbrechen.

41 Daß du2370 aber gesehen hast die Füße7271 und Zehen677 eines4481 Teils Ton6353 und eines4481 Teils Eisen6523, das wird ein zerteilt Königreich4437 sein1934; doch wird von4481 des Eisens Pflanze drinnen bleiben, wie6903 du2370 denn gesehen hast Eisen mit2917 Ton2635 vermenget.

42 Und daß die Zehen677 an seinen Füßen7271 eines4481 Teils Eisen6523 und eines Teils Ton2635 sind, wird es zum4481 Teil ein stark8624 und zum4481 Teil ein schwach Reich4437 sein1934.

43 Und2917 daß1768 du2370 gesehen hast Eisen6523 mit5974 Ton2635 vermenget, werden sie sich wohl nach1934 Menschengeblüt606 untereinander mengen1934, aber sie werden doch nicht3809 aneinander1836 halten1693, gleichwie1888 sich Eisen6523 mit Ton2635 nicht3809 mengen läßt.

44 Aber zur Zeit3118 solcher Königreiche4430 wird2255 GOtt426 vom Himmel8065 ein Königreich4437 aufrichten6966, das1932 nimmermehr zerstöret wird; und sein Königreich4437 wird auf6966 kein3809 ander321 Volk5972 kommen7662. Es wird alle3606 diese581 Königreiche4437 zermalmen1855 und verstören5487, aber es wird ewiglich bleiben.

45 Wie6903 du2370 denn gesehen hast3046, einen Stein69 ohne3809 Hände3028 vom Berge2906 herabgerissen1505, der das Eisen6523, Erz5174, Ton2635, Silber3702 und Gold1722 zermalmet. Also1836 hat der große7229 GOtt426 dem Könige4430 gezeiget, wie4101 es hernach gehen werde1934; und das ist gewiß3330 der Traum2493, und die Deutung6591 ist recht540.

46 Da116 fiel5308 der König4430 Nebukadnezar5020 auf sein Angesicht600 und5922 betete5457 an vor dem Daniel1841 und befahl560, man sollte ihm Speisopfer4504 und Räuchopfer5208 tun5260.

47 Und der König4430 antwortete6032 Daniel1841 und sprach560: Es ist kein Zweifel7187, euer1768 GOtt426 ist ein GOtt426 über alle Götter426 und ein HErr4756 über alle Könige4430, der da4481 kann verborgene Dinge7328 offenbaren1541, weil du dies1836 verborgene Ding7328 hast können3202 offenbaren1541.

48 Und116 der König4430 erhöhete Daniel1841 und5922 gab3052 ihm große7690 und5922 viele Geschenke4978 und machte ihn zum Fürsten7981 über das ganze3606 Land zu Babel895 und setzte ihn zum Obersten7229 über alle3606 Weisen2445 zu Babel895.

24 And in that very hour Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had ordered to destroy the wise men of Babylon; he went and spoke thus to him: Destroy not the wise men of Babylon; but bring me in before the king and I will show the king the interpretation.

30 But as for me, this mystery is not revealed to me on account of any wisdom that I have more than any living person, but for the sake of the interpretation, that it might be known to the king and that you may know the thoughts of your heart.

31 You, O king, were looking, and behold, a great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before you; and its appearance was terrible.

35 Then the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold were all broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and a strong wind carried them away so that no place was found for them; and the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.

39 And after you shall arise another kingdom inferior to you, and a third kingdom of brass, which shall rule over all the earth.

40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron; for just as iron hammers and breaks everything in pieces, so shall it break and conquer every kingdom.

42 And as for the toes of the feet which you saw, part of iron and part of clay, so some parts of the kingdom shall be strong and some parts weak.

43 And whereas you saw iron mixed with miry clay, so they shall mix themselves with one another in marriage; but they shall not cleave one to another, just as iron does not mix with clay.

45 Forasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God has made known to you what shall come to pass in the latter days. The dream is true, and its interpretation is sure.

46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer incense and sacrifices to him.

48 Then the king advanced Daniel's rank and gave him a great many gifts and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon and appointed him chief over all the generals of the armies and over all the wise men of Babylon.
