Chapter 49

1 Listen,8085 O isles,339 unto413 me; and hearken,7181 ye people,3816 from far;4480 7350 The LORD3068 hath called7121 me from the womb;4480 990 from the bowels4480 4578 of my mother517 hath he made mention2142 of my name.8034

2 And he hath made7760 my mouth6310 like a sharp2299 sword;2719 in the shadow6738 of his hand3027 hath he hid2244 me, and made7760 me a polished1305 shaft;2671 in his quiver827 hath he hid5641 me;

3 And said559 unto me, Thou859 art my servant,5650 O Israel,3478 in whom834 I will be glorified.6286

4 Then I589 said,559 I have labored3021 in vain,7385 I have spent3615 my strength3581 for naught,8414 and in vain:1892 yet surely403 my judgment4941 is with854 the LORD,3068 and my work6468 with854 my God.430

5 And now,6258 saith559 the LORD3068 that formed3335 me from the womb4480 990 to be his servant,5650 to bring Jacob again7725 3290 to413 him, Though Israel3478 be not gathered,622 yet shall I be glorious3513 in the eyes5869 of the LORD,3068 and my God430 shall be1961 my strength.5797

6 And he said,559 It is a light thing7043 that thou shouldest be4480 1961 my servant5650 to raise up6965 853 the tribes7626 of Jacob,3290 and to restore7725 the preserved5341 of Israel:3478 I will also give5414 thee for a light216 to the Gentiles,1471 that thou mayest be1961 my salvation3444 unto5704 the end7097 of the earth.776

7 Thus3541 saith559 the LORD,3068 the Redeemer1350 of Israel,3478 and his Holy One,6918 to him whom man5315 despiseth,960 to him whom the nation1471 abhorreth,8581 to a servant5650 of rulers,4910 Kings4428 shall see7200 and arise,6965 princes8269 also shall worship,7812 because of4616 the LORD3068 that834 is faithful,539 and the Holy One6918 of Israel,3478 and he shall choose977 thee.

8 Thus3541 saith559 the LORD,3068 In an acceptable7522 time6256 have I heard6030 thee, and in a day3117 of salvation3444 have I helped5826 thee: and I will preserve5341 thee, and give5414 thee for a covenant1285 of the people,5971 to establish6965 the earth,776 to cause to inherit5157 the desolate8074 heritages;5159

9 That thou mayest say559 to the prisoners,631 Go forth;3318 to them that834 are in darkness,2822 Show yourselves.1540 They shall feed7462 in5921 the ways,1870 and their pastures4830 shall be in all3605 high places.8205

10 They shall not3808 hunger7456 nor3808 thirst;6770 neither3808 shall the heat8273 nor sun8121 smite5221 them: for3588 he that hath mercy7355 on them shall lead5090 them, even by5921 the springs4002 of water4325 shall he guide5095 them.

11 And I will make7760 all3605 my mountains2022 a way,1870 and my highways4546 shall be exalted.7311

12 Behold,2009 these428 shall come935 from far:4480 7350 and, lo,2009 these428 from the north4480 6828 and from the west;4480 3220 and these428 from the land4480 776 of Sinim.5515

13 Sing,7442 O heavens;8064 and be joyful,1523 O earth;776 and break forth6476 into singing,7440 O mountains:2022 for3588 the LORD3068 hath comforted5162 his people,5971 and will have mercy7355 upon his afflicted.6041

14 But Zion6726 said,559 The LORD3068 hath forsaken5800 me, and my Lord136 hath forgotten7911 me.

15 Can a woman802 forget7911 her sucking child,5764 that she should not have compassion4480 7355 on the son1121 of her womb?990 yea,1571 they428 may forget,7911 yet will I595 not3808 forget7911 thee.

16 Behold,2005 I have graven2710 thee upon5921 the palms of my hands;3709 thy walls2346 are continually8548 before5048 me.

17 Thy children1121 shall make haste;4116 thy destroyers2040 and they that made thee waste2717 shall go forth3318 of4480 thee.

18 Lift up5375 thine eyes5869 round about,5439 and behold:7200 all3605 these gather themselves together,6908 and come935 to thee. As I589 live,2416 saith5002 the LORD,3068 thou shalt surely3588 clothe3847 thee with them all,3605 as with an ornament,5716 and bind7194 them on thee, as a bride3618 doeth.

19 For3588 thy waste2723 and thy desolate places,8074 and the land776 of thy destruction,2035 shall even3588 now6258 be too narrow3334 by reason of the inhabitants,4480 3427 and they that swallowed thee up1104 shall be far away.7368

20 The children1121 which thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the other,7923 shall say559 again5750 in thine ears,241 The place4725 is too strait6862 for me: give place5066 to me that I may dwell.3427

21 Then shalt thou say559 in thine heart,3824 Who4310 hath begotten3205 me853 these,428 seeing I589 have lost my children,7909 and am desolate,1565 a captive,1540 and removing to and fro?5493 and who4310 hath brought up1431 these?428 Behold,2005 I589 was left7604 alone;905 these,428 where375 had they1992 been?

22 Thus3541 saith559 the Lord136 GOD,3069 Behold,2009 I will lift up5375 mine hand3027 to413 the Gentiles,1471 and set up7311 my standard5251 to413 the people:5971 and they shall bring935 thy sons1121 in their arms,2684 and thy daughters1323 shall be carried5375 upon5921 their shoulders.3802

23 And kings4428 shall be1961 thy nursing fathers,539 and their queens8282 thy nursing mothers:3243 they shall bow down7812 to thee with their face639 toward the earth,776 and lick up3897 the dust6083 of thy feet;7272 and thou shalt know3045 that3588 I589 am the LORD:3068 for they834 shall not3808 be ashamed954 that wait6960 for me.

24 Shall the prey4455 be taken3947 from the mighty,4480 1368 or518 the lawful6662 captive7628 delivered?4422

25 But3588 thus3541 saith559 the LORD,3068 Even1571 the captives7628 of the mighty1368 shall be taken away,3947 and the prey4455 of the terrible6184 shall be delivered:4422 for I595 will contend with7378 him that contendeth with3401 thee, and I595 will save3467 thy children.1121

26 And I will feed398 853 them that oppress3238 thee with853 their own flesh;1320 and they shall be drunken7937 with their own blood,1818 as with sweet wine:6071 and all3605 flesh1320 shall know3045 that3588 I589 the LORD3068 am thy Savior3467 and thy Redeemer,1350 the mighty One46 of Jacob.3290

Chapter 49

1 LSTEN to me, O isles; hearken to me, O you nations, the LORD has called me from afar; from the womb, and from the body of my mother has he made mention of my name.

2 He has made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand has he hid me and made me a chosen arrow; in his quiver has he hid me,

3 And said to me, You are my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.

4 I have not said to the descendants of Jacob that I have labored in vain, nor that I have spent my strength for nought. Surely my judgment is before the LORD, and my work before my God.

5 Now, thus says the LORD, who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him and gather Israel together; I am glorified in the eyes of the LORD, and my God has become my strength.

6 And he said: It is a small thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the scions of Israel; I have given you to be a light to the Gentiles, that you might be my salvation to the ends of the earth.

7 Thus says the LORD, the Holy One of Israel and his Saviour, to him whose soul is despised, to him who is abhorred by the people and by the servants of the rulers: Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship him, because of the LORD who is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel who has chosen you.

8 Thus says the LORD: In an acceptable time I have answered you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you; and I have formed you and have given you for a covenant to the people and a light to the Gentiles, to establish the earth, to cause you to possess the desolate heritages;

9 That you may say to the prisoners, Go forth; to those who are shut up, Show yourselves. Come out. They shall feed in the paths and their pastures shall be in all highways.

10 They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the sultry heat nor the sun smite them; for he who is merciful to them shall lead them, and by the springs of water shall he bring them.

11 And I will make all mountains to be highways, and the highways shall be exalted.

12 Behold, these shall come from afar, and 1o, these from the north and from the islands of the sea, and these from the coast of Sinim.

13 Sing, O heavens, and be joyful, O earth, and break forth into singing, O mountains; for the LORD has comforted his people and will have mercy upon his afflicted.

14 But Zion said, The LORD has forsaken me and the LORD has forgotten me.

15 Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, but I will not forget you.

16 Behold, I have inscribed you upon the palms of my hands; your fortified walls are continually before me.

17 Your sons who caused your destruction and those who laid you waste shall make haste to go forth from you.

18 Lift up your eyes round about and behold; they all gather themselves together and come to you. As I live, says the LORD, you shall surely clothe yourself with them all as with an ornament, and you shall be adorned like a bride.

19 For your waste and your desolate places and the land of your destruction shall even now be too narrow by reason of the inhabitants, and those who swallowed you up shall flee away.

20 The children which you shall have during the time of your bereavement shall say again in your ears, The place is too narrow for us; make room for us to dwell.

21 Then you shall say in your heart, Who has borne me these? For, behold, I have been bereaved and barren, a captive, and wandering to and fro. And who has brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; and these children, where have they been?

22 Thus says the LORD God: Behold, I will lift up my hand to the Gentiles and set up my standard to the nations; and they shall bring your sons in their arms, and your daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.

23 And kings shall be your foster fathers, and their queens your nursing mothers; they shall bow down to you with their faces to the ground and shall lick the dust off your feet; and you shall know that I am the LORD; for they who wait for me shall not be ashamed.

24 Can the prey be taken away from the mighty, or a giant's captives be delivered?

25 For thus says the LORD: Even the prey of the mighty shall be taken away, and the captives of the mighty shall be delivered; and I will contend with him who contends with you, and I will save your children.

26 And I will cause your oppressors to eat their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood as with new wine; and all men shall know that I the LORD am your Saviour and your Helper, the Mighty One of Jacob.

13 Sing, O heavens, and be joyful, O earth, and break forth into singing, O mountains; for the LORD has comforted his people and will have mercy upon his afflicted.

14 But Zion6726 said,559 The LORD3068 hath forsaken5800 me, and my Lord136 hath forgotten7911 me.

14 But Zion said, The LORD has forsaken me and the LORD has forgotten me.

15 Can a woman802 forget7911 her sucking child,5764 that she should not have compassion4480 7355 on the son1121 of her womb?990 yea,1571 they428 may forget,7911 yet will I595 not3808 forget7911 thee.

15 Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, but I will not forget you.

17 Your sons who caused your destruction and those who laid you waste shall make haste to go forth from you.

18 Lift up your eyes round about and behold; they all gather themselves together and come to you. As I live, says the LORD, you shall surely clothe yourself with them all as with an ornament, and you shall be adorned like a bride.

19 For3588 thy waste2723 and thy desolate places,8074 and the land776 of thy destruction,2035 shall even3588 now6258 be too narrow3334 by reason of the inhabitants,4480 3427 and they that swallowed thee up1104 shall be far away.7368

19 For your waste and your desolate places and the land of your destruction shall even now be too narrow by reason of the inhabitants, and those who swallowed you up shall flee away.

20 The children1121 which thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the other,7923 shall say559 again5750 in thine ears,241 The place4725 is too strait6862 for me: give place5066 to me that I may dwell.3427

20 The children which you shall have during the time of your bereavement shall say again in your ears, The place is too narrow for us; make room for us to dwell.

21 Then you shall say in your heart, Who has borne me these? For, behold, I have been bereaved and barren, a captive, and wandering to and fro. And who has brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; and these children, where have they been?

22 Thus3541 saith559 the Lord136 GOD,3069 Behold,2009 I will lift up5375 mine hand3027 to413 the Gentiles,1471 and set up7311 my standard5251 to413 the people:5971 and they shall bring935 thy sons1121 in their arms,2684 and thy daughters1323 shall be carried5375 upon5921 their shoulders.3802

22 Thus says the LORD God: Behold, I will lift up my hand to the Gentiles and set up my standard to the nations; and they shall bring your sons in their arms, and your daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.

23 And kings shall be your foster fathers, and their queens your nursing mothers; they shall bow down to you with their faces to the ground and shall lick the dust off your feet; and you shall know that I am the LORD; for they who wait for me shall not be ashamed.

24 Shall the prey4455 be taken3947 from the mighty,4480 1368 or518 the lawful6662 captive7628 delivered?4422

24 Can the prey be taken away from the mighty, or a giant's captives be delivered?

25 But3588 thus3541 saith559 the LORD,3068 Even1571 the captives7628 of the mighty1368 shall be taken away,3947 and the prey4455 of the terrible6184 shall be delivered:4422 for I595 will contend with7378 him that contendeth with3401 thee, and I595 will save3467 thy children.1121

25 For thus says the LORD: Even the prey of the mighty shall be taken away, and the captives of the mighty shall be delivered; and I will contend with him who contends with you, and I will save your children.

26 And I will cause your oppressors to eat their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood as with new wine; and all men shall know that I the LORD am your Saviour and your Helper, the Mighty One of Jacob.
