1 „Я, Навуходоно́сор, був спокійний в своєму домі, і щасливий у пала́ті своїй.

2 Я бачив сон, і він настра́шив мене, а думки́ на моєму ложі та виді́ння моєї голови налякали мене.

3 І був виданий від мене нака́з привести перед мене всіх вавилонських мудреці́в, щоб вони об'явили мені ро́зв'язку сна.

4 Того ча́су поприхо́дили чарівники́, заклиначі́, халде́ї та віщуни́, і я розповів перед ними сон, та вони не об'явили мені його ро́зв'язки.

5 І аж останній прийшов перед мене Даниїл, якому ім'я́ Валтаса́р, як ім'я́ мого бога, і що в ньому дух Святого Бога. І я розповів йому сон та й сказав:

6 „Валтаса́ре, начальнику чарівників, я знаю, що в тобі дух Святого Бога, і всяка таємниця не тяжка́ тобі. Скажи видіння мого сну, що я бачив, та його ро́зв'язку.

7 А видіння моєї голови на моєму ложі такі. Я бачив, аж ось дерево серед землі, а вишина́ його велика.

8 Це дерево стало велике та си́льне, і вишина́ його сяга́ла до Неба, а його о́бвід — до кінця всієї землі.

9 Ві́ття його гарне, плід його великий, а в ньому пожи́ва — для всіх. Під ним знахо́дила собі тінь польова звірина́, а на його галу́ззях ме́шкали пта́хи небесні, і з нього живи́лося кожне тіло.

10 Бачив я у виді́ннях своєї голови на моєму ложі, аж ось зійшов з неба Сторож Божий та Святий.

11 І він кликнув із силою, і так проказав: „Зруба́йте це дерево, і повідру́буйте галу́ззя його, позривайте ві́ття його, і порозсипа́йте його плід. Нехай розі́йдеться з-під нього звірина́, а пта́хи — з галу́ззя його́!

12 Та позоставте в землі пня його ко́реня, але в пу́тах залізних та мідяни́х, на зеленій польові́й траві. І небесною росою нехай він зро́шується, а його ча́стка — зо звірино́ю на польові́й траві.

13 Його лю́дське серце змі́нять, і буде да́не йому серце звіри́не, і сім часі́в пере́йдуть над ним.

14 Через постанову Сторожів Божих це слово, а пові́дженням Святих — ця річ, аж при́йде до того, що пізна́ють живі, що над лю́дським царством панує Всевишній, і кому схоче, дає його, і низько́го з людей ставить над ним“.

15 Оцей сон бачив я, цар Навуходоно́сор, а ти, Валтаса́ре, скажи його ро́зв'язку, бо всі мудреці мого царства не можуть сказати мені ро́зв'язки, а ти можеш, бо в тобі Дух Святого Бога“.

16 Тоді Даниїл, що ім'я́ йому Валтаса́р, остовпі́в на одну годину, і думки́ його перестра́шили його. Цар заговорив та й сказав: „Валтаса́ре, нехай не страши́ть тебе цей сон та його ро́зв'язка!“ Валтаса́р відповів та й сказав: „Мій пане, на ворогів би твоїх цей сон, а його ро́зв'язка — на твоїх би не́приятелів!

17 Дерево, яке ти бачив, що було велике та міцне́, і вишина́ його сягала до неба, а о́бвід його — на всю землю,

18 а ві́ття його гарне, і плід його великий, і в ньому пожи́ва — для всіх, під ним ме́шкала польова́ звірина́, а на його галу́ззях перебували пта́хи небесні, —

19 ти, ца́рю, той, що став великий та поту́жний, і твоя великість побільшилася, і сягнула аж до небе́с, а панува́ння твоє — до кі́нців землі.

20 А що цар бачив Божого Сто́рожа та Святого, який схо́див із небе́с, і сказав: Зрубайте це дерево, і знищте його, та позоставте в землі пня його ко́реня, але в пу́тах залізних та мідяни́х, на зеленій польові́й траві; і небесною росо́ю нехай він зро́шується, а його частка — з польово́ю звірино́ю, аж по́ки пере́йдуть над ним сім часі́в,

21 то ось ро́зв'язка, ца́рю, і це постанова Всевишнього, що сягає на мого пана царя:

22 І тебе ви́женуть від людей, і з польово́ю звірино́ю буде пробува́ння твоє, і дадуть тобі їсти траву, як волам, і з небесної роси тебе зро́сять, і сім часі́в пере́йдуть над тобою, аж поки пізна́єш, що над лю́дським царством панує Всевишній, і дає його тому́, кому хоче.

23 А що сказали позоставити пня ко́реня дерева, — твоє царство позоста́неться тобі, якщо ти пі́знаєш, що панує небо.

24 Тому́, царю, нехай буде до вподо́би моя рада тобі, — зламай же свої гріхи́ справедливістю, а свої провини — милістю для вбогих, щоб твій мир був довготрива́лий“.

25 Усе це сталося над царем Навуходоно́сором.

26 На кінці дванадцяти́ місяців прохо́джувався він по царсько́му пала́цу в Вавилоні.

27 Цар заговорив та й сказав: „Чи ж це не вели́чний Вавилон, що я збудував його на дім царства мі́ццю поту́ги своєї та на славу моєї пишноти́?“

28 Ще це слово було в у́стах царськи́х, коли з неба впав голос: „Тобі гово́рять, ца́рю Навуходоно́соре: Оце царство відхо́дить від тебе!

29 І від людей тебе відлу́чать, і з польово́ю звірино́ю буде пробува́ння твоє, тобі дадуть на ї́жу траву, як волам, і сім часі́в пере́йдуть над тобою, — аж поки не пізна́єш, що над лю́дським царством панує Всевишній, і дає його тому́, кому хоче.“

30 Тієї хвилини ви́коналося це слово над Навуходоно́сором, і він був відлу́чений від людей, і їв траву, як воли, і його тіло зро́шувалося з небесної роси, аж його во́лос став великий, як пір'я орли́не, а його пазурі́ — як у пта́хів.

31 „А на кінці́ тих днів я, Навуходоно́сор, звів свої очі до неба, і мій розум вернувся до мене, й я поблагословив Всевишнього, і вічно Живого хвали́в я та сла́вив, що Його панува́ння — панува́ння вічне, а царство Його — з поколі́ння в покоління.

32 А всі ме́шканці землі порахо́вані за ніщо́, і Він чинить за Своєю Волею серед небесного ві́йська та ме́шканців землі, і немає ніко́го, хто спроти́вився б Його руці та й сказав би Йому́: Що́ Ти робиш?

33 Того ча́су верну́вся мій розум до мене, і я вернувся до слави царства свого, і ясність моя верну́лася на ме́не. І шукали мене мої радники та вельможі мої, і над царством своїм я був поста́влений зно́ву, і мені була до́дана дуже велика вели́чність.

34 Тепер я, Навуходоно́сор, хвалю́ й звели́чую та сла́влю Небесного Царя, що всі чини Його — правда, а дорога Його — правосу́ддя, а тих, хто ходить у го́рдощах, Він може пони́зити“.

Chapter 4

1 THEN Nebuchadnezzar the king wrote to all peoples, nations and languages that dwelt in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you.

2 I thought it good to publish the signs and wonders that the High God has wrought toward me.

3 How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.

4 I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at rest in my house and at ease in my palace;

5 I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the visions of my head troubled me.

6 Therefore I made a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream.

7 Then came in before me the magicians, the astrologers, the soothsayers, and the Chaldeans; and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known to me the interpretation thereof;

8 Until Daniel came before me, whose name is Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and before him I told the dream, saying,

9 O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you and no mystery is hidden from you, this is the vision of my dream that I have seen; tell me the interpretation thereof.

10 These were the visions which I saw in my bed: I saw, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great.

11 The tree grew high, and was strong, and its height reached to heaven and the view thereof to the end of all the earth.

12 Its leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant; and in it was food for all; the beasts of the field dwelt under it, and the fowls of the air rested in its boughs, and all flesh was fed from it.

13 I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and behold, a holy angel came down from heaven,

14 And cried aloud and spoke thus: Hew down the tree and cut off its branches, shake off its leaves and scatter its fruit; let the beasts get away from under it and the fowls of the air from its branches;

15 Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth; but it shall be bound with a band of iron and brass in the green grass of the field; and let him be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his dwelling be with the beasts of the field in the grass of the earth;

16 Let his heart be changed from man's, and let a beast's heart be given to him; and let seven seasons change over him.

17 This decree is by the command of the angel at the request of the Holy One to the intent that the living may know that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whomsoever he will, and appoints over it the lowest of men.

18 This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, have seen. Now you, O Belteshazzar, tell me the interpretation thereof, because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation; but you, Daniel, are able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in you.

19 Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was confused for an hour and his thoughts troubled him. The king spoke and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream or the interpretation thereof trouble you. Daniel answered and said, My lord, may the dream be to those who hate you and the interpretation thereof to your enemies.

20 The tree which you saw, which grew and was strong, whose height reached to the heaven and the view thereof, to all the earth;

21 Whose leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant, and in it was food for all flesh; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the fowls of the air rested, and from it fed all flesh;

22 It is you, O king; for you have grown and become strong; you have grown high and reach to the heavens, and your dominion is to the end of the earth.

23 And whereas the king saw a holy angel coming down from heaven, crying aloud and saying, Hew clown the tree and destroy it; but leave the stump and the roots thereof in the earth and let it be bound with a band of iron and brass in the green grass of the field; and let him be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his dwelling be with the beasts of the field in the grass of the earth; and let his heart be changed from man's, and let a beast's heart be given to him till seven seasons change over him.

24 This is the interpretation, O king: The decree of the Most High has come against my lord the king;

25 They shall drive you away from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make you to eat grass like an ox, and you shall be wet with the dew of heaven, and seven seasons shall change over you, till you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whomsoever he will.

26 And whereas he commanded to spare the stump and the tree roots, your kingdom shall be sure to you after you have learned that authority is from heaven.

27 Wherefore, let my counsel be acceptable to you, and get rid of your sins by means of almsgiving, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the weak, till your transgressions are removed from you.

28 All of these things came upon King Nebuchadnezzar.

29 At the end of twelve months King Nebuchadnezzar was walking on the roof of his royal palace which is in Babylon.

30 And he spoke and said, Is not this great Babylon that I have built for the seat of my kingdom and for my great dominion and my majesty?

31 While the word was in the king's mouth, there came a voice from heaven, saying, O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken; for your kingdom is departed from you.

32 And they shall drive you from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; they shall make you to eat grass like an ox, and you shall be wet with the dew of heaven; and seven seasons shall change over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whomsoever he will, and he appoints the lowest of men over it.

33 The same hour the word was fulfilled upon King Nebuchadnezzar; and he was driven from among men, and did eat grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hair grew like eagles' feathers and his nails like bird's claws.

34 And when the days were fulfilled, I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my sense was restored to me, and I blessed the Most High and I praised and glorified him who lives for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion and whose kingdom is from generation to generation;

6 „Валтаса́ре, начальнику чарівників, я знаю, що в тобі дух Святого Бога, і всяка таємниця не тяжка́ тобі. Скажи видіння мого сну, що я бачив, та його ро́зв'язку.

6 Therefore I made a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream.

7 А видіння моєї голови на моєму ложі такі. Я бачив, аж ось дерево серед землі, а вишина́ його велика.

7 Then came in before me the magicians, the astrologers, the soothsayers, and the Chaldeans; and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known to me the interpretation thereof;

8 Це дерево стало велике та си́льне, і вишина́ його сяга́ла до Неба, а його о́бвід — до кінця всієї землі.

8 Until Daniel came before me, whose name is Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and before him I told the dream, saying,

9 Ві́ття його гарне, плід його великий, а в ньому пожи́ва — для всіх. Під ним знахо́дила собі тінь польова звірина́, а на його галу́ззях ме́шкали пта́хи небесні, і з нього живи́лося кожне тіло.

9 O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you and no mystery is hidden from you, this is the vision of my dream that I have seen; tell me the interpretation thereof.

10 Бачив я у виді́ннях своєї голови на моєму ложі, аж ось зійшов з неба Сторож Божий та Святий.

10 These were the visions which I saw in my bed: I saw, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great.

11 І він кликнув із силою, і так проказав: „Зруба́йте це дерево, і повідру́буйте галу́ззя його, позривайте ві́ття його, і порозсипа́йте його плід. Нехай розі́йдеться з-під нього звірина́, а пта́хи — з галу́ззя його́!

13 I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and behold, a holy angel came down from heaven,

14 Через постанову Сторожів Божих це слово, а пові́дженням Святих — ця річ, аж при́йде до того, що пізна́ють живі, що над лю́дським царством панує Всевишній, і кому схоче, дає його, і низько́го з людей ставить над ним“.

14 And cried aloud and spoke thus: Hew down the tree and cut off its branches, shake off its leaves and scatter its fruit; let the beasts get away from under it and the fowls of the air from its branches;

15 Оцей сон бачив я, цар Навуходоно́сор, а ти, Валтаса́ре, скажи його ро́зв'язку, бо всі мудреці мого царства не можуть сказати мені ро́зв'язки, а ти можеш, бо в тобі Дух Святого Бога“.

15 Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth; but it shall be bound with a band of iron and brass in the green grass of the field; and let him be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his dwelling be with the beasts of the field in the grass of the earth;

16 Тоді Даниїл, що ім'я́ йому Валтаса́р, остовпі́в на одну годину, і думки́ його перестра́шили його. Цар заговорив та й сказав: „Валтаса́ре, нехай не страши́ть тебе цей сон та його ро́зв'язка!“ Валтаса́р відповів та й сказав: „Мій пане, на ворогів би твоїх цей сон, а його ро́зв'язка — на твоїх би не́приятелів!

16 Let his heart be changed from man's, and let a beast's heart be given to him; and let seven seasons change over him.

17 Дерево, яке ти бачив, що було велике та міцне́, і вишина́ його сягала до неба, а о́бвід його — на всю землю,

17 This decree is by the command of the angel at the request of the Holy One to the intent that the living may know that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whomsoever he will, and appoints over it the lowest of men.

18 а ві́ття його гарне, і плід його великий, і в ньому пожи́ва — для всіх, під ним ме́шкала польова́ звірина́, а на його галу́ззях перебували пта́хи небесні, —

18 This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, have seen. Now you, O Belteshazzar, tell me the interpretation thereof, because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation; but you, Daniel, are able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in you.

19 ти, ца́рю, той, що став великий та поту́жний, і твоя великість побільшилася, і сягнула аж до небе́с, а панува́ння твоє — до кі́нців землі.

19 Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was confused for an hour and his thoughts troubled him. The king spoke and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream or the interpretation thereof trouble you. Daniel answered and said, My lord, may the dream be to those who hate you and the interpretation thereof to your enemies.

20 А що цар бачив Божого Сто́рожа та Святого, який схо́див із небе́с, і сказав: Зрубайте це дерево, і знищте його, та позоставте в землі пня його ко́реня, але в пу́тах залізних та мідяни́х, на зеленій польові́й траві; і небесною росо́ю нехай він зро́шується, а його частка — з польово́ю звірино́ю, аж по́ки пере́йдуть над ним сім часі́в,

20 The tree which you saw, which grew and was strong, whose height reached to the heaven and the view thereof, to all the earth;

21 то ось ро́зв'язка, ца́рю, і це постанова Всевишнього, що сягає на мого пана царя:

21 Whose leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant, and in it was food for all flesh; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the fowls of the air rested, and from it fed all flesh;

22 І тебе ви́женуть від людей, і з польово́ю звірино́ю буде пробува́ння твоє, і дадуть тобі їсти траву, як волам, і з небесної роси тебе зро́сять, і сім часі́в пере́йдуть над тобою, аж поки пізна́єш, що над лю́дським царством панує Всевишній, і дає його тому́, кому хоче.

22 It is you, O king; for you have grown and become strong; you have grown high and reach to the heavens, and your dominion is to the end of the earth.

23 А що сказали позоставити пня ко́реня дерева, — твоє царство позоста́неться тобі, якщо ти пі́знаєш, що панує небо.

23 And whereas the king saw a holy angel coming down from heaven, crying aloud and saying, Hew clown the tree and destroy it; but leave the stump and the roots thereof in the earth and let it be bound with a band of iron and brass in the green grass of the field; and let him be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his dwelling be with the beasts of the field in the grass of the earth; and let his heart be changed from man's, and let a beast's heart be given to him till seven seasons change over him.

24 Тому́, царю, нехай буде до вподо́би моя рада тобі, — зламай же свої гріхи́ справедливістю, а свої провини — милістю для вбогих, щоб твій мир був довготрива́лий“.

24 This is the interpretation, O king: The decree of the Most High has come against my lord the king;

25 Усе це сталося над царем Навуходоно́сором.

25 They shall drive you away from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make you to eat grass like an ox, and you shall be wet with the dew of heaven, and seven seasons shall change over you, till you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whomsoever he will.

26 На кінці дванадцяти́ місяців прохо́джувався він по царсько́му пала́цу в Вавилоні.

26 And whereas he commanded to spare the stump and the tree roots, your kingdom shall be sure to you after you have learned that authority is from heaven.

27 Цар заговорив та й сказав: „Чи ж це не вели́чний Вавилон, що я збудував його на дім царства мі́ццю поту́ги своєї та на славу моєї пишноти́?“

27 Wherefore, let my counsel be acceptable to you, and get rid of your sins by means of almsgiving, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the weak, till your transgressions are removed from you.

28 Ще це слово було в у́стах царськи́х, коли з неба впав голос: „Тобі гово́рять, ца́рю Навуходоно́соре: Оце царство відхо́дить від тебе!

28 All of these things came upon King Nebuchadnezzar.

29 І від людей тебе відлу́чать, і з польово́ю звірино́ю буде пробува́ння твоє, тобі дадуть на ї́жу траву, як волам, і сім часі́в пере́йдуть над тобою, — аж поки не пізна́єш, що над лю́дським царством панує Всевишній, і дає його тому́, кому хоче.“

29 At the end of twelve months King Nebuchadnezzar was walking on the roof of his royal palace which is in Babylon.

30 Тієї хвилини ви́коналося це слово над Навуходоно́сором, і він був відлу́чений від людей, і їв траву, як воли, і його тіло зро́шувалося з небесної роси, аж його во́лос став великий, як пір'я орли́не, а його пазурі́ — як у пта́хів.

30 And he spoke and said, Is not this great Babylon that I have built for the seat of my kingdom and for my great dominion and my majesty?

31 „А на кінці́ тих днів я, Навуходоно́сор, звів свої очі до неба, і мій розум вернувся до мене, й я поблагословив Всевишнього, і вічно Живого хвали́в я та сла́вив, що Його панува́ння — панува́ння вічне, а царство Його — з поколі́ння в покоління.

31 While the word was in the king's mouth, there came a voice from heaven, saying, O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken; for your kingdom is departed from you.

32 А всі ме́шканці землі порахо́вані за ніщо́, і Він чинить за Своєю Волею серед небесного ві́йська та ме́шканців землі, і немає ніко́го, хто спроти́вився б Його руці та й сказав би Йому́: Що́ Ти робиш?

32 And they shall drive you from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; they shall make you to eat grass like an ox, and you shall be wet with the dew of heaven; and seven seasons shall change over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whomsoever he will, and he appoints the lowest of men over it.

33 Того ча́су верну́вся мій розум до мене, і я вернувся до слави царства свого, і ясність моя верну́лася на ме́не. І шукали мене мої радники та вельможі мої, і над царством своїм я був поста́влений зно́ву, і мені була до́дана дуже велика вели́чність.

33 The same hour the word was fulfilled upon King Nebuchadnezzar; and he was driven from among men, and did eat grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hair grew like eagles' feathers and his nails like bird's claws.

34 Тепер я, Навуходоно́сор, хвалю́ й звели́чую та сла́влю Небесного Царя, що всі чини Його — правда, а дорога Його — правосу́ддя, а тих, хто ходить у го́рдощах, Він може пони́зити“.

34 And when the days were fulfilled, I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my sense was restored to me, and I blessed the Most High and I praised and glorified him who lives for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion and whose kingdom is from generation to generation;
