Chapter 12

1 EPHRAIM feeds on wind and follows after the tempest all the day long; they have multiplied lies and prey; they have made a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.

2 The LORD has a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; and according to his devices will he recompense him.

3 In the womb he deceived his brother, and by his might he became great in the presence of God;

4 Yea, he prevailed over the angel, he made supplication to him; he found him in Beth-el, and there he spoke with him.

5 Even the LORD the God of hosts has remembered him.

6 Therefore return to your God; keep mercy and justice, and wait for your God continually.

7 The balances of deceit are in the hand of Canaan, he loves to oppress.

8 And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found grief; but all my labors will not be enough to rid me of the sin which I have sinned.

9 I am the LORD your God who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. I will again make you to dwell in tents, as in the days of the solemn feasts.

10 I have spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions and used similitudes by the ministry of the prophets.

11 In Gilead you suffered pain, and in Gilgal you sacrificed bullocks to falsehood; your altars are like dry stalks in a barren field.

12 Jacob fled to the land of Aram, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep.

13 And by the prophets the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by the prophets was he preserved.

14 Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly; therefore his blood shall come upon him, and his reproach shall his LORD return to him.

1 Єфре́м оточи́в Мене лжею, лука́вством — Ізраїлів дім, а Юда держа́вся ще з Богом і з святими був вірний.

2 Єфрем пасе вітра й женеться за вітром із схо́ду. Неправду й руїну розмно́жує він кожного дня, умову складають з Ашшу́ром, олива ж несе́ться в Єгипет.

3 Та в Господа з Юдою пря, і Якова Він навісти́ть за путя́ми його́, за діла́ми його йому зве́рне.

4 Він в утро́бі тримав за п'яту́ свого брата, а в силі своїй він боровся із Богом, —

5 і боровся він з Анголом, — та й перемі́г. Плакав він, і блага́в він Його́, у Бет-Елі знайшов Він його́, і там з нами гово́рить.

6 А Господь — Бог Савао́т, Його Йме́ння — Госпо́дь.

7 А ти через Бога свого наве́рнешся, стережи милість та суд, і за́вжди надійся на Бога свого́!

8 Немов Ханаа́н, — у нього в руці неправдива вага́, любить він кривду чинити.

9 І каже Єфрем: Справді я збагати́вся, знайшов я маєток собі! У всіх моїх чи́нах не зна́йдуть провини мені, що гріхом би була́.

10 А Я — Госпо́дь, Бог твій від кра́ю єгипетського, — ще в наме́тах тебе посаджу́, немов за днів свята.

11 І Я говорив до пророків, і виді́ння розмно́жив, і через пророків Я при́тчі казав.

12 Хіба беззако́ння лиши́в Ґілеа́д, і марно́тою стались лиш там? У Ґілґа́лі прино́сили в жертву волів, а їхні же́ртівники — мов ті купи каміння на бо́рознах пі́льних.

13 І втік Яків на поле Ара́ма, а Ізра́їль за жінку робив, і за жінку отару стері́г.

14 І через пророка Госпо́дь із Єгипту Ізраїля ви́вів, і пророком стере́жений був він.
