Chapter 6

1 THEN when Sanballat and Tobiah and Geshem the Arabian and the rest of our enemies heard the news that I had built the wall and that there was no breach left in it (though at that time we had not set up the doors upon the gates),

2 Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, Come, let us go together and encamp as a troop in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me harm.

3 And I sent a messenger to them, saying, I am doing a great work so that I cannot come down, lest the work cease, while I leave it and come down to you.

4 But they sent to me four times in this manner, and I answered them after the same manner.

5 Then Sanballat sent his servant to me in like manner the fifth time with a letter in his hand

6 Wherein was written, It is reported among the nations, and Geshem says it, that you and the Jews think to rebel; that is why you are building the wall, that you may be their king, according to these words.

7 And you have also appointed prophets to prophesy concerning you at Jerusalem, saying, Behold, there is a king in Judah; and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now, therefore, and let us take counsel together.

8 Then I sent to him, saying, There is no truth in such words as these which you say; you are saying them out of your own heart.

9 For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work; and they say to us, Do not do the work. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.

10 Then I went into the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel who used to hinder me from work; and he said to me, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple; for they are coming to slay you; yea, in the night they are coming to slay you.

11 And I said, Should I flee to men like you? God forbid that I should flee and enter into the temple!

12 And, lo, I perceive that God had not sent him against me; neither has it been said to me by a prophet that he will slay me, for Tobiah and Sanballet and their companions had hired him and sent him to kill me.

13 Therefore he was hired, that I should be afraid and do so and sin, so that I might become to them an evil report, that they might reproach me.

14 Remember, O my God, Tobiah and Sanballat and their companions according to these their impious works, and also Jodaiah the prophet and the rest of the prophets who tried to frighten me because of them.

15 So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days.

16 Now when all our enemies heard of it, they were afraid, and all the nations that were round about us trembled exceedingly from our presence; for they perceived that this work was wrought of God.

17 Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came to them.

18 For there were many in Judah who had sworn to him that they would not harm him, because he was the son-in-law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.

19 Also they reported his good words before me, and told him anything I said. And Tobiah sent letters to frighten me.

1 Когда Санваллату, Товии, Гешему из Аравии и другим нашим врагам сообщили, что я восстановил стену и в ней не осталось проломов (хотя створы ворот не были еще мной навешены),

2 двое из них, Санваллат и Гешем, пригласили меня встретиться в одном из селений в долине Оно. Они хотели заманить меня в ловушку.

3 Я отправил к ним вестников с таким ответом: «Я занят важным делом, так что прийти не могу. Неужели мне всё бросить и отправиться к вам?»

4 Четырежды они отправляли мне приглашение, и четырежды я отвечал им теми же словами.

5 На пятый раз Санваллат отправил ко мне своего слугу с незапечатанным письмом.

6 В нем было сказано: «Среди народов ходит слух, да и Гашму подтверждает, что ты вместе с иудеями задумал мятеж, для того и восстанавливаешь стену. Ты, говорят, хочешь стать царем

7 и уже отправил пророков провозглашать по всему Иерусалиму: „Есть царь в Иудее!“ Обо всем этом донесут царю, так что лучше приходи посоветоваться».

8 Но я отвечал ему: «Ничего из того, о чем ты рассказываешь, не было, всё это твои выдумки».

9 Так они пытались нас запугать, рассчитывая, что мы опустим руки и не завершим работы, но тем самым они лишь придали мне решимости!

10 Я отправился к Шемае, сыну Делаи, внуку Мехетавэля. В те дни он не мог выходить из дома. Однако он сказал мне: «Встретимся в Храме Божьем, скроемся внутри и запрем за собой двери — ведь тебя хотят убить, и убивать тебя придут ночью!»

11 Я ответил: «Кому бежать — мне? И мне ли входить во Святилище? Не бывать мне тогда в живых — нет, я не пойду».

12 Я понял, что не Бог послал его, что это пророчество его оплатили Товия и Санваллат.

13 Они подкупили его, чтобы меня запугать, и послушайся я его — я согрешил бы, а они разнесли бы обо мне худую славу.

14 Припомни, Боже мой, Товии и Санваллату эти поступки, не забудь и пророчицу Ноадью и других пророков, что запугивали меня.

15 Восстановление стены было завершено на пятьдесят второй день работ — в двадцать пятый день месяца элул.

16 Услышали об этом наши враги, устрашились этого окрестные народы и впали в глубокое уныние: поняли они, что работа свершилась с помощью Бога нашего.

17 В те дни иудейская знать часто посылала письма Товии, а Товия писал им в ответ.

18 Многие в Иудее были связаны с ним клятвами, ведь он был зятем Шеханьи, сына Араха, а его сын Ехоханан взял в жены дочь Мешуллама, сына Берехьи.

19 Все они рассказывали мне, как хорошо поступает Товия, а ему пересказывали мои слова. Товия же всё посылал мне письма, чтобы запугать меня.

6 Wherein was written, It is reported among the nations, and Geshem says it, that you and the Jews think to rebel; that is why you are building the wall, that you may be their king, according to these words.

6 В нем было сказано: «Среди народов ходит слух, да и Гашму подтверждает, что ты вместе с иудеями задумал мятеж, для того и восстанавливаешь стену. Ты, говорят, хочешь стать царем

7 And you have also appointed prophets to prophesy concerning you at Jerusalem, saying, Behold, there is a king in Judah; and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now, therefore, and let us take counsel together.

7 и уже отправил пророков провозглашать по всему Иерусалиму: „Есть царь в Иудее!“ Обо всем этом донесут царю, так что лучше приходи посоветоваться».

8 Then I sent to him, saying, There is no truth in such words as these which you say; you are saying them out of your own heart.

8 Но я отвечал ему: «Ничего из того, о чем ты рассказываешь, не было, всё это твои выдумки».

9 For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work; and they say to us, Do not do the work. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.

9 Так они пытались нас запугать, рассчитывая, что мы опустим руки и не завершим работы, но тем самым они лишь придали мне решимости!

10 Then I went into the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel who used to hinder me from work; and he said to me, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple; for they are coming to slay you; yea, in the night they are coming to slay you.

10 Я отправился к Шемае, сыну Делаи, внуку Мехетавэля. В те дни он не мог выходить из дома. Однако он сказал мне: «Встретимся в Храме Божьем, скроемся внутри и запрем за собой двери — ведь тебя хотят убить, и убивать тебя придут ночью!»

11 And I said, Should I flee to men like you? God forbid that I should flee and enter into the temple!

11 Я ответил: «Кому бежать — мне? И мне ли входить во Святилище? Не бывать мне тогда в живых — нет, я не пойду».

12 And, lo, I perceive that God had not sent him against me; neither has it been said to me by a prophet that he will slay me, for Tobiah and Sanballet and their companions had hired him and sent him to kill me.

12 Я понял, что не Бог послал его, что это пророчество его оплатили Товия и Санваллат.

13 Therefore he was hired, that I should be afraid and do so and sin, so that I might become to them an evil report, that they might reproach me.

13 Они подкупили его, чтобы меня запугать, и послушайся я его — я согрешил бы, а они разнесли бы обо мне худую славу.

16 Now when all our enemies heard of it, they were afraid, and all the nations that were round about us trembled exceedingly from our presence; for they perceived that this work was wrought of God.

16 Услышали об этом наши враги, устрашились этого окрестные народы и впали в глубокое уныние: поняли они, что работа свершилась с помощью Бога нашего.

17 Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came to them.

17 В те дни иудейская знать часто посылала письма Товии, а Товия писал им в ответ.
