Chapter 32

1 NOW the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle; and when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, behold, the place was a place for cattle;

2 The children of Reuben and the children of Gad came and said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the princes of the congregation,

3 Ataroth, Ribon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sheba, Nebo, and Beon,

4 The land which the LORD smote before the children of Israel is a land for cattle, and your servants have cattle;

5 Wherefore, they said, if we have found mercy in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession, and bring us not across the Jordan.

6 And Moses said to the children of Reuben and to the children of Gad, Shall your brethren go to war, while you settle here?

7 Why do you discourage the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD has given them?

8 Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Rakim-gia to spy out the land.

9 For when they went up as far as the valley of Segola, and spied out the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them.

10 And the LORD'S anger was kindled against them on that day, and he swore, saying,

11 Surely none of the men who came up out of the land of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me;

12 Except Caleb the son of Jophaniah the Kenezite and Joshua the son of Nun; for they have wholly followed the LORD.

13 And the LORD'S anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the LORD was consumed.

14 And, behold, you also are risen up in your father's stead, a generation of sinful men, to augment still the fierce anger of the LORD against Israel.

15 For if you turn away from after the LORD, he will again make you wander in the wilderness; and you shall destroy all this people.

16 Then they came near to him and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle and cities for our little ones;

17 But we ourselves will arm and go before the children of Israel, until we have brought them to their place; and our little ones shall dwell in fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

18 We will not return to our houses until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance;

19 For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan or beyond; because we have already received our inheritance on this side of the Jordan eastward.

20 And Moses said to them, If you will do this thing and arm yourselves before the LORD for war,

21 And will go all of you armed across the Jordan before the LORD, to war, until he has destroyed his enemies from before his presence,

22 And the land is subdued before the LORD; then after that you shall return and be guiltless before the LORD and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD.

23 But if you will not do so, behold, you will he sinning against the LORD; and be sure your sins will overtake you.

24 Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep; and do that which you have promised.

25 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad said to Moses, Your servants will do as our lord commands.

26 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle shall remain there in the cities of Gilead;

27 But your servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the LORD for battle, as our lord said.

28 So concerning all of them Moses commanded Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the chiefs of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel;

29 And Moses said to them, If the children of Reuben and the children of Gad will cross with you over the Jordan, every man armed for battle before the LORD, and the land shall be subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession;

30 But if they will not cross over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.

31 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad answered, saying, As the LORD has said to your servants, so will we do.

32 We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan to war, that the possession of our inheritance on this side of the Jordan may be ours.

33 And Moses gave to them, to the children of Reuben and to the children of Gad and to half of the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Mathnin, all the land with its cities throughout its territories and the towns of the country round about it.

34 And the children of Gad built Ribon and Ataroth and Adoer

35 And Atroth, Shopham and Jazer and Jogbehah,

36 Beth-nimrah and Beth-hauran, fenced cities and folds for sheep.

37 And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, Elealeh, Koriathaim,

38 Nebo, and Baal-meon (their names being changed), and Sibmah; and gave other names to the cities which they built.

39 And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and destroyed the Amorites who were in it.

40 And Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt therein.

41 And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took their villages, and called them Caproney Jair (hamlets of Jair, to this day).

42 And Nocah went and took Keeth and its villages, and called it Nocah, after his own name.

7 Warum machet ihr der Kinder1121 Israel3478 Herzen3820 wendig, daß sie5106 nicht hinüberziehen in5674 das Land776, das ihnen der HErr3068 geben5414 wird?

8 Also taten6213 auch eure Väter1, da ich7200 sie aussandte7971 von Kades-Barnea6947, das Land776 zuschauen;

9 und da sie5106 hinaufkommen waren3820 bis935 an5927 den Bach5158 Eskol812 und sahen7200 das Land776, machten sie das Herz der Kinder1121 Israel3478 wendig, daß sie nicht in das Land776 wollten, das ihnen der HErr3068 geben5414 wollte.

10 Und des HErrn3068 Zorn639 ergrimmete zur selbigen Zeit3117 und schwur7650 und sprach559:

11 Diese Leute582, die aus Ägypten4714 gezogen sind5927, von zwanzig6242 Jahren8141 und1121 drüber, sollen ja das Land127 nicht sehen7200, das ich Abraham85, Isaak3327 und Jakob3290 geschworen habe, darum daß518 sie mir310 nicht treulich4390 nachgefolget haben7650;

14 Und582 siehe, ihr seid aufgetreten6965 an eurer Väter1 Statt, daß der Sündiger desto mehr8635 seien, und ihr auch den Zorn639 und Grimm2740 des HErrn3068 noch mehr machet wider Israel3478.

15 Denn wo ihr euch310 von ihm wendet7725, so wird er auch noch3254 länger sie lassen3240 in der Wüste4057, und ihr werdet dies Volk5971 alles verderben7843.

16 Da traten sie herzu5066 und6629 sprachen559: Wir wollen nur Schafhürden hie bauen1129 für unser Vieh4735 und Städte5892 für unsere Kinder2945;

17 wir587 aber wollen uns rüsten2502 vorn an vor6440 die Kinder1121 Israel3478, bis daß wir3427 sie bringen935 an ihren Ort4725. Unsere Kinder2945 sollen in6440 den verschlossenen4013 Städten5892 bleiben um der Einwohner3427 willen des Landes776.

18 Wir wollen nicht heimkehren1004, bis die Kinder1121 Israel3478 einnehmen ein376 jeglicher sein7725 Erbe5157.

19 Denn wir wollen nicht mit ihnen erben jenseit5676 des Jordans3383, sondern unser Erbe5157 soll uns diesseit des Jordans3383 gegen5676 dem Morgen4217 gefallen sein935.

20 Mose4872 sprach559 zu ihnen: Wenn ihr das1697 tun6213 wollt, daß ihr euch rüstet2502 zum Streit4421 vor6440 dem HErrn3068,

21 so ziehet über5674 den Jordan3383 vor6440 dem HErrn3068, wer unter6440 euch gerüstet ist2502, bis5674 daß er seine Feinde341 austreibe3423 von seinem Angesicht,

23 Wo ihr3045 aber nicht also tun6213 wollt, siehe, so werdet ihr, euch an dem HErrn3068 versündigen und2403 werdet eurer Sünde2398 inne werden, wenn sie euch finden4672 wird.

24 So bauet1129 nun Städte5892 für eure Kinder2945 und3318 Hürden1448 für euer Vieh6792 und tut6213, was ihr geredet habt6310.

25 Die Kinder1121 Gad1410 und559 die Kinder1121 Ruben7205 sprachen559 zu Mose4872: Deine Knechte5650 sollen tun6213, wie mein Herr113 geboten6680 hat.

26 Unsere Kinder2945, Weiber802, Habe und all unser Vieh4735 sollen in den Städten5892 Gileads1568 sein;

30 Ziehen5674 sie aber nicht mit euch gerüstet2502, so sollen sie mit euch erben270 im8432 Lande776 Kanaan3667.

31 Die Kinder1121 Gad1410 und die Kinder1121 Ruben7205 antworteten6030 und sprachen1696: Wie der HErr3068 redete559 zu deinen Knechten5650, so wollen wir tun6213.

32 Wir5168 wollen gerüstet2502 ziehen5674 vor6440 dem HErrn3068 ins Land776 Kanaan3667 und unser Erbgut272 besitzen5159 diesseit5676 des Jordans3383.

34 Da baueten die Kinder1121 Gad1410 Dibon1769, Ataroth5852, Aroer6177,

35 Atroth, Sophan5855, Jaeser, Jegabeha,

36 Beth-Nimra1039 und6629 Beth Haran1028, verschlossene4013 Städte5892 und Schafhürden1448.

37 Die Kinder1121 Ruben7205 baueten Hesbon2809, Eleale500, Kiriathaim,

38 Nebo5015, Baal-Meon1186, und1129 änderten4142 die Namen8034, und Sibama; und gaben den Städten5892 Namen, die sie7121 baueten.

39 Und1121 die Kinder1121 Machirs4353, des Sohns Manasses4519, gingen3212 in Gilead1568 und gewannen3920 es und vertrieben3423 die Amoriter567, die drinnen waren.

40 Da gab5414 Mose4872 dem Machir4353, dem Sohn1121 Manasses4519, Gilead1568; und er wohnete drinnen.

41 Jair2971 aber, der Sohn1121 Manasses4519, ging1980 hin und gewann3920 ihre Dörfer2333 und hieß7121 sie Havoth-Jair.
