Chapter 17

1 Better2896 is a dry2720 morsel,6595 and quietness7962 therewith, than an house1004 full4392 of sacrifices2077 with strife.7379

2 A wise7919 servant5650 shall have rule4910 over a son1121 that causes shame,954 and shall have part2505 of the inheritance5159 among8432 the brothers.251

3 The fining4715 pot4715 is for silver,3701 and the furnace3564 for gold:2091 but the LORD3068 tries974 the hearts.3826

4 A wicked7489 doer gives heed7181 to false205 lips;8193 and a liar8267 gives ear238 to a naughty1942 tongue.3956

5 Whoever mocks3932 the poor7326 reproaches2778 his Maker:6213 and he that is glad8056 at calamities343 shall not be unpunished.5352

6 Children's1121 children1121 are the crown5850 of old2205 men; and the glory8597 of children1121 are their fathers.1

7 Excellent3499 speech8193 becomes5000 not a fool:5036 much637 less do lying8267 lips8193 a prince.5081

8 A gift7810 is as a precious2580 stone68 in the eyes5869 of him that has1167 it: wherever413 it turns,6437 it prospers.7919

9 He that covers3680 a transgression6588 seeks1245 love;160 but he that repeats8138 a matter1697 separates6504 very friends.441

10 A reproof1606 enters5181 more into a wise995 man than an hundred3967 stripes5221 into a fool.3684

11 An evil7451 man seeks1245 only389 rebellion:4805 therefore a cruel394 messenger4397 shall be sent7971 against him.

12 Let a bear1677 robbed7909 of her whelps meet6298 a man,376 rather408 than a fool3684 in his folly.200

13 Whoever rewards7725 evil7451 for good,2896 evil7451 shall not depart4185 from his house.1004

14 The beginning7225 of strife4066 is as when one lets6362 out water:4325 therefore leave5203 off contention,7379 before6440 it be meddled1566 with.

15 He that justifies6663 the wicked,7563 and he that condemns7561 the just,6662 even1571 they both8147 are abomination8441 to the LORD.3068

16 Why4100 2088 is there a price4242 in the hand3027 of a fool3684 to get7069 wisdom,2451 seeing he has no369 heart3820 to it?

17 A friend7453 loves157 at all3605 times,6256 and a brother251 is born3205 for adversity.6869

18 A man120 void2638 of understanding3820 strikes8628 hands,3709 and becomes6148 surety6161 in the presence6440 of his friend.7453

19 He loves157 transgression6588 that loves157 strife:4683 and he that exalts1361 his gate6607 seeks1245 destruction.7667

20 He that has a fraudulent6141 heart3820 finds4672 no3808 good:2896 and he that has a perverse2015 tongue3956 falls5307 into mischief.7451

21 He that begets3205 a fool3684 does it to his sorrow:8424 and the father1 of a fool5036 has no3808 joy.8056

22 A merry8056 heart3820 does good3190 like a medicine:1456 but a broken5218 spirit7307 dries3001 the bones.1634

23 A wicked7563 man takes3947 a gift7810 out of the bosom2436 to pervert5186 the ways734 of judgment.4941

24 Wisdom2451 is before854 6440 him that has understanding;995 but the eyes5869 of a fool3684 are in the ends7097 of the earth.776

25 A foolish3684 son1121 is a grief3708 to his father,1 and bitterness4470 to her that bore3205 him.

26 Also1571 to punish6064 the just6662 is not good,2896 nor to strike5221 princes5081 for equity.3476

27 He that has knowledge1847 spares2820 his words:561 and a man376 of understanding8394 is of an excellent7119 spirit.7307

28 Even1571 a fool,191 when he holds2790 his peace,2790 is counted2803 wise:2450 and he that shuts331 his lips8193 is esteemed a man of understanding.995

Proverbs

Chapter 17

1 BETTER is dry bread, and quietness with it, than a house full of feasting with strife.

2 A wise servant shall rule over a son who causes shame, and shall share the inheritance among the brothers.

3 The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold; but the LORD tries the heart.

4 A wicked man listens to perverse lips; but a righteous man does not heed the tongues of vicious men.

5 He who mocks the poor provokes his Maker; and he who is glad at calamity shall not be forgiven.

6 Children's children are the crowns of old men; and the glory of children is their fathers.

7 Excellent speech is unbecoming to a fool, and lying lips to a righteous man.

8 A precious stone is beautiful in the eyes of him who has it; wherever it turns it is admired.

9 He who forgets an offense seeks friendship; but he who hates to forget an offense estranges himself from a friend and neighbor.

10 A threat breaks the heart of a wise man; but the fool instead of a rebuke receives a scourging, and yet he is not conscious of it.

11 A quarrelsome man seeks mischief; therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

12 Meditation and reverence are suitable for a wise man; but a fool meditates in his folly.

13 He who rewards evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

14 He who sheds blood stirs up judgment before the ruler.

15 He who justifies the wicked and condemns the just is an abomination before the LORD.

16 What good is wealth in the possession of a fool who has no desire to acquire wisdom?

17 A friend loves at all times; but a brother is born for adversity.

18 A foolish man pledges himself, for he becomes surety for his friend.

19 He who loves iniquity loves deceit and strife; and he who exalts himself seeks destruction.

20 He who slanders in heart will not find good; and he who has an evil tongue falls into mischief.

21 He who begets a fool does it to his own shame; his father will have no joy in him.

22 A merry heart makes the body healthy; but a broken spirit dries up the bones.

23 He who accepts a bribe is wicked; for he perverts the way of justice.

24 The face of a man of understanding is set toward wisdom; but the eyes of a fool are in the depths of the earth.

25 A foolish son provokes his father, and is bitterness to her who bore him.

26 To punish the just is not good, nor to scourge the righteous men who speak the truth.

27 He who spares his words has knowledge; and he who is patient is a wise man.

28 Even a fool when he holds his peace is considered wise; and he who shuts his lips is counted a man of understanding.
