Chapter 17

1 The sin2403 of Judah3063 is written3789 with a pen5842 of iron,1270 and with the point6856 of a diamond:8068 it is graven2790 on the table3871 of their heart,3820 and on the horns7161 of your altars;4196

2 Whilst their children1121 remember2142 their altars4196 and their groves842 by the green7488 trees6086 on the high1364 hills.1389

3 O my mountain2042 in the field,7704 I will give5414 your substance2428 and all3605 your treasures214 to the spoil,957 and your high1116 places for sin,2403 throughout all3605 your borders.1366

4 And you, even yourself, shall discontinue8058 from your heritage5159 that I gave5414 you; and I will cause you to serve5647 your enemies341 in the land776 which834 you know3045 not: for you have kindled6919 a fire784 in my anger,639 which shall burn3344 for ever.5769

5 Thus3541 said559 the LORD;3068 Cursed779 be the man1397 that trusts982 in man,120 and makes flesh1320 his arm,2220 and whose heart3820 departs5493 from the LORD.3068

6 For he shall be like the heath6176 in the desert,6160 and shall not see7200 when3588 good2896 comes;935 but shall inhabit7931 the parched2788 places in the wilderness,4057 in a salt4420 land776 and not inhabited.3427

7 Blessed1288 is the man1397 that trusts982 in the LORD,3068 and whose hope4009 the LORD3068 is.

8 For he shall be as a tree6086 planted8362 by the waters,4325 and that spreads7971 out her roots8328 by the river,3105 and shall not see7200 when3588 heat2527 comes,935 but her leaf5929 shall be green;7488 and shall not be careful1672 in the year8141 of drought,1226 neither3808 shall cease4185 from yielding6213 fruit.6529

9 The heart3820 is deceitful6121 above all3605 things, and desperately605 wicked:605 who4310 can know3045 it?

10 I the LORD3068 search2713 the heart,3820 I try974 the reins,3629 even to give5414 every man376 according to his ways,1870 and according to the fruit6529 of his doings.4611

11 As the partridge7124 sits1716 on eggs,1000 and hatches3205 them not; so he that gets6213 riches,6239 and not by right,4941 shall leave5800 them in the middle2677 of his days,3117 and at his end319 shall be a fool.5036

12 A glorious3519 high4791 throne3678 from the beginning7223 is the place4725 of our sanctuary.4720

13 O LORD,3068 the hope4723 of Israel,3478 all3605 that forsake5800 you shall be ashamed,954 and they that depart3249 from me shall be written3789 in the earth,776 because3588 they have forsaken5800 the LORD,3068 the fountain4726 of living2416 waters.4325

14 Heal7495 me, O LORD,3068 and I shall be healed;7495 save3467 me, and I shall be saved:3467 for you are my praise.8416

15 Behold,2009 they say559 to me, Where346 is the word1697 of the LORD?3068 let it come935 now.4994

16 As for me, I have not hastened213 from being a pastor7462 to follow310 you: neither3808 have I desired183 the woeful605 day;3117 you know:3045 that which came4161 out of my lips8193 was right5227 before5227 6440 you.

17 Be not a terror4288 to me: you are my hope4268 in the day3117 of evil.7451

18 Let them be confounded954 that persecute7291 me, but let not me be confounded:954 let them be dismayed,2865 but let not me be dismayed:2865 bring935 on them the day3117 of evil,7451 and destroy7665 them with double4932 destruction.7670

19 Thus3541 said559 the LORD3068 to me; Go1980 and stand5975 in the gate8179 of the children1121 of the people,5971 whereby834 the kings4428 of Judah3063 come935 in, and by the which834 they go3318 out, and in all3605 the gates8179 of Jerusalem;3389

20 And say559 to them, Hear8085 you the word1697 of the LORD,3068 you kings4428 of Judah,3063 and all3605 Judah,3063 and all3605 the inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem,3389 that enter935 in by these428 gates:8179

21 Thus3541 said559 the LORD;3068 Take heed8104 to yourselves,5315 and bear5375 no408 burden4853 on the sabbath7676 day,3117 nor bring935 it in by the gates8179 of Jerusalem;3389

22 Neither3808 carry3318 forth3318 a burden4853 out of your houses1004 on the sabbath7676 day,3117 neither3808 do6213 you any3605 work,4399 but hallow6942 you the sabbath7676 day,3117 as I commanded6680 your fathers.1

23 But they obeyed8085 not, neither3808 inclined5186 their ear,241 but made their neck6202 stiff,7185 that they might not hear,8085 nor1115 receive3947 instruction.4148

24 And it shall come1961 to pass, if518 you diligently listen8085 to me, said5002 the LORD,3068 to bring935 in no1115 burden4853 through the gates8179 of this2063 city5892 on the sabbath7676 day,3117 but hallow6942 the sabbath7676 day,3117 to do6213 no1115 work4399 therein;

25 Then shall there enter935 into the gates8179 of this2063 city5892 kings4428 and princes8269 sitting3427 on the throne3678 of David,1732 riding7392 in chariots7393 and on horses,5483 they, and their princes,8269 the men376 of Judah,3063 and the inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem:3389 and this2088 city5892 shall remain3427 for ever.5769

26 And they shall come935 from the cities5892 of Judah,3063 and from the places5439 about5439 Jerusalem,3389 and from the land776 of Benjamin,1144 and from the plain,8219 and from the mountains,2022 and from the south,5045 bringing935 burnt5930 offerings, and sacrifices,2077 and meat offerings,4503 and incense,3828 and bringing935 sacrifices of praise,8426 to the house1004 of the LORD.3068

27 But if518 you will not listen8085 to me to hallow6942 the sabbath7676 day,3117 and not to bear5375 a burden,4853 even entering935 in at the gates8179 of Jerusalem3389 on the sabbath7676 day;3117 then will I kindle3341 a fire784 in the gates8179 thereof, and it shall devour398 the palaces759 of Jerusalem,3389 and it shall not be quenched.3518

Chapter 17

1 THE sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron and with the point of a diamond; it is engraved upon the tablets of their heart and upon the horns of their altars;

2 And their idols are under every green tree and upon every high hill and upon the mountains and in the open country.

3 I will give all your riches, all your treasures to the spoil, and that which is throughout your territory, because of your sins.

4 And I will cause you to lose the inheritance which I have given you; and I will cause you to serve your enemies in the land which you do riot know; for you have kindled a fire in my anger, which shall burn for ever.

5 Thus says the LORD, Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes the son of the flesh his arm, and whose heart departs from the LORD.

6 For he shall be like a plant in the desert, and shall not see when good comes; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness in a salt land not inhabited.

7 Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, and whose hope is in him.

8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, that spreads out its roots by the stream, and it shall not be afraid when heat comes, but its leaves shall be green; and shall not be afraid in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

9 The heart is stubborn above all things; who can understand it?

10 I the LORD search the heart and try the reins, and give every man according to his ways and according to the fruits of his doings.

11 Like the partridge that calls to the eggs which she has not hatched, so is he who gets riches and not by right; he shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end he shall be in disgrace.

12 A glorious high throne from the beginning is the place of our sanctuary.

13 The LORD is the hope of Israel; all who forsake thee shall be ashamed, and those who revolt against thee shall have their names written in the dust, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.

14 Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved; for thou art my praise.

15 Behold, they say to me, Where is the word of the LORD? Let it come now.

16 As for me, I have not urged thee to bring evil; nor have I desired any man's woeful day; thou knowest; that which came out of my lips was before thy face.

17 Be not a terror to me; but abide with me in the day of trouble.

18 Let them be put to shame who persecute me, but let me not be put to shame; let them be defeated, but let me not be defeated; bring upon them the day of evil, and defeat them with double defeat.

19 Thus said the LORD to me: Go and stand at the public gate by which the kings of Judah enter and by which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem;

20 And say to them, Hear the word of the LORD, you kings of Judah and all the house of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem who enter by these gates.

21 Thus says the LORD: Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the sabbath day nor bring it in through the gates of Jerusalem;

22 Neither carry a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, nor do any work; but hallow the sabbath day as I commanded your fathers.

23 But they did not obey, neither inclined their ear, but hardened their neck that they, might not heat nor receive instruction.

24 And it shall come to pass if you diligently listen to me, says the LORD, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but hallow the sabbath day and do no work on it;

25 Then there shall enter through the gates of this city kings and princes who sit on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their princes, the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and this city shall remain for ever.

26 And the people shall come from the cities of Judah and from the places round about Jerusalem and from the land of Benjamin and from the plain and from the mountains and from the south, bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices and incense, and bringing thank offerings to the house of the LORD.

27 But if you do not listen to me to hallow the sabbath day and do not refrain from carrying a burden through the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in its gates, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.

27 But if you do not listen to me to hallow the sabbath day and do not refrain from carrying a burden through the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in its gates, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.
