Chapter 43

1 THE famine was very severe in the land.

2 And when they had finished eating the wheat which they had brought from Egypt, their father Jacob said to them, Go down to Egypt, and buy us a little grain.

3 And Judah said to him, The man did solemnly charge us, saying, You shall not see my face except your brother is with you.

4 If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy grain for ourselves;

5 But if you will not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, You shall not see my face except your brother is with you.

6 Then their father Israel said to them, Why did you cause me this displeasure, as to tell the man whether you had another brother?

7 And they said, The man asked us straitly about ourselves and our kindred, saying, Is your father still alive? Have you another brother? And we told him simply because of these words; could we have known in advance that he would say to us that we should bring our brother down?

8 And Judah said to Israel his father, Send the lad with us, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and also our little ones.

9 And I will be surety for him; of my hands shall you require him; if I do not bring him back to you, and set him before you, then I shall be guilty before my father forever;

10 For if we had not delayed, perhaps we would have now returned a second time.

11 And their father Israel said to them, If it must be so now, then do this: take some of the best fruits of the land in your sacks, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, gum, and myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds;

12 And take double money with you; and the money that was brought back in the mouth of your sacks, take it again with you; perhaps it was an oversight;

13 Take also your brother, and arise, and go again to the man;

14 And may God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin with you. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.

15 So the men took the present, and they took double money with them, and Benjamin; and rose up and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.

16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, Bring these men into the house, and kill a sheep, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon.

17 And the servant did as Joseph had told him; and brought the men into Joseph's house.

18 And they were afraid, when they brought them into Joseph's house; and they said, It is because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time that we are brought in; so that he may seek occasion against us, and conspire against us, that they may make us slaves, and take away our asses.

19 So they came near to the steward of Joseph's house and spoke with him at the door of the house,

20 And said, We beseech you, O our lord, we truly came down at the first time to buy grain;

21 And it came to pass when we came to the inn that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight; and we have brought it back again with us.

22 And we have brought other money down with us to buy grain: we did not know who put our money in our sacks.

23 He said to them, Peace be to you, fear not; your God, and the God of your father, has put a treasure in your sacks; I had your money. And he brought Simeon out to them.

24 Then the servant brought the men into Joseph's house and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he put fodder before their asses.

25 And the men made ready the present before Joseph came at noon; for they heard that they should eat bread there.

26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which they had in their hands into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the ground.

27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said to them, Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke to me? Is he still alive?

28 And they answered, Your servant our father is well. he is still alive. And they bowed down their heads and made obeisance.

29 And he raised up his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said to them, Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me? And he said. May God be gracious to you, my son.

30 And Joseph made haste; for his heart did yearn for his brother; and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber and wept there.

31 Then he washed his face and went out and controlled his emotions and said, Let us eat.

32 And they served Joseph by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians, who did eat with him, by themselves; because the Egyptians could not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.

33 And they sat before him, the first-born according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth; and the men looked at one another and marveled.

34 And the servants took portions to them from before Joseph; but Benjamin's portion was five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank and were merry with him.

2 Когда всё зерно, которое братья привезли из Египта, было съедено, Иаков велел своим сыновьям: «Отправляйтесь в Египет и привезите ещё зерна, чтобы нам было, что есть».

3 Тогда Иуда сказал Иакову: «Правитель той страны предупредил нас, сказав: „Если не приведёте ко мне своего брата, то не являйтесь мне на глаза”.

4 Если ты отпустишь с нами Вениамина, мы сможем отправиться в Египет и купить там зерно,

5 если же ты отказываешься отпустить его, то мы не пойдём, так как тот человек предупредил нас, чтобы мы без брата не приходили».

6 После этого Израиль спросил: «Почему вы ему сказали, что у вас есть ещё один брат? Зачем причинили мне такое зло?»

7 «Этот человек задавал нам много вопросов, — ответили братья. — Он хотел знать всё о нас и нашей семье. Он спросил нас: „Жив ли ещё ваш отец? Есть ли у вас дома ещё один брат?” Мы просто отвечали на его вопросы, не ведая, что он велит нам привести к нему брата».

8 Иуда сказал Израилю, отцу своему: «Пусть Вениамин идёт со мной, я позабочусь о нём. Мы должны пойти в Египет за едой, а если не пойдём, то все умрём и наши дети с нами.

9 Я ручаюсь за его безопасность и отвечаю за него. Если я не приведу его к тебе обратно, то можешь считать меня виновным навеки.

10 Если бы ты отпустил нас раньше, мы бы уже сходили два раза».

11 И сказал тогда их отец Израиль: «Если это так, то берите с собой Вениамина и захватите с собой дары для правителя. Возьмите то, что мы сумели собрать на своей земле: мёд, фисташки, миндаль, пряности и мирру,

12 и на этот раз возьмите с собой вдвое больше денег. Возьмите те деньги, которые вам возвратили в прошлый раз, может быть, правитель ошибся.

13 Возьмите Вениамина и отправляйтесь обратно к тому человеку.

14 Я молю Всемогущего Бога помочь вам, когда предстанете перед правителем, молю, чтобы он дал Вениамину и Симеону возвратиться обратно невредимыми, если же нет, то горевать мне опять об утраченном сыне!»

15 Тогда, взяв с собой дары для правителя и вдвое больше денег, чем в первый раз, братья отправились в Египет, но на этот раз Вениамин тоже пошёл с ними. Братья приглашены к Иосифу Когда братья предстали перед Иосифом,

16 то он, увидев с ними Вениамина, повелел своему слуге: «Приведи этих людей ко мне в дом, заколи что-нибудь из скота и приготовь, сегодня в полдень эти люди будут есть со мной».

17 Слуга исполнил приказание и привёл их в дом к Иосифу.

18 Братья были в страхе, когда их вели в дом к Иосифу, и говорили: «Нас привели сюда из-за тех денег, которые в прошлый раз были положены в мешки, и теперь эти деньги будут свидетельством против нас: у нас отберут ослов и обратят нас в рабство».

19 У дверей дома братья подошли к слуге Иосифа, его домоправителю,

20 и сказали: «Господин, клянёмся тебе, что говорим правду: в прошлый раз мы пришли, чтобы купить еду,

21 по дороге домой мы открыли свои мешки, и каждый нашёл там деньги, а как они попали туда, мы не знаем. Мы принесли их с собой обратно, чтобы вернуть тебе. Мы принесли также ещё денег, чтобы заплатить за еду, которую собираемся купить в этот раз».

23 Слуга же ответил: «Не бойтесь, поверьте мне: должно быть, Бог ваш и Бог отца вашего положил деньги вам в мешки в дар. Я помню, что вы в прошлый раз заплатили за зерно».

24 и отвёл их всех в дом к Иосифу. Там он принёс им воды омыть ноги и дал корм их ослам.

25 Узнав, что они будут есть с Иосифом, братья приготовили дары к его приходу в полдень.

26 Когда Иосиф пришёл домой, братья поклонились ему до земли и отдали принесённые дары.

27 Иосиф поинтересовался у братьев об их жизни. «Как поживает ваш престарелый отец, о котором вы мне говорили? — спросил Иосиф. — Жив ли он ещё и здоров ли?»

28 «Да, господин, — ответили братья, — наш отец ещё жив», и снова поклонились Иосифу.

29 И в этот момент Иосиф увидел своего брата Вениамина, с которым у него была одна мать, и спросил: «Это и есть ваш младший брат, о котором вы мне говорили?» Вениамину же Иосиф сказал: «Да благословит тебя Бог, сын мой!» —

30 и быстро удалился из комнаты, так как его охватило чувство любви к брату и он готов был заплакать. Иосиф вошёл в свою комнату и там плакал,

31 а потом ополоснул лицо и вернулся. Овладев собой, он сказал: «Подавайте кушанья!»

32 Слуги подали Иосифу за отдельным столом, братьев посадили за другой стол, а египтяне сидели отдельно, так как считали, что им не подобает есть с евреями.

33 Братья Иосифа сидели прямо перед ним за своим столом по старшинству: от старшего до младшего — и переглядывались между собой, дивясь происходящему.

34 Слуги стали брать блюда со стола Иосифа и подносить им, а Вениамину подавали в пять раз больше, чем остальным. Братья ели и пили с Иосифом, пока не напились почти допьяна.

2 And when they had finished eating the wheat which they had brought from Egypt, their father Jacob said to them, Go down to Egypt, and buy us a little grain.	2 Когда всё зерно, которое братья привезли из Египта, было съедено, Иаков велел своим сыновьям: «Отправляйтесь в Египет и привезите ещё зерна, чтобы нам было, что есть».
3 And Judah said to him, The man did solemnly charge us, saying, You shall not see my face except your brother is with you.	3 Тогда Иуда сказал Иакову: «Правитель той страны предупредил нас, сказав: „Если не приведёте ко мне своего брата, то не являйтесь мне на глаза”.
4 If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy grain for ourselves;	4 Если ты отпустишь с нами Вениамина, мы сможем отправиться в Египет и купить там зерно,
5 But if you will not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, You shall not see my face except your brother is with you.	5 если же ты отказываешься отпустить его, то мы не пойдём, так как тот человек предупредил нас, чтобы мы без брата не приходили».
6 Then their father Israel said to them, Why did you cause me this displeasure, as to tell the man whether you had another brother?	6 После этого Израиль спросил: «Почему вы ему сказали, что у вас есть ещё один брат? Зачем причинили мне такое зло?»
7 And they said, The man asked us straitly about ourselves and our kindred, saying, Is your father still alive? Have you another brother? And we told him simply because of these words; could we have known in advance that he would say to us that we should bring our brother down?	7 «Этот человек задавал нам много вопросов, — ответили братья. — Он хотел знать всё о нас и нашей семье. Он спросил нас: „Жив ли ещё ваш отец? Есть ли у вас дома ещё один брат?” Мы просто отвечали на его вопросы, не ведая, что он велит нам привести к нему брата».
8 And Judah said to Israel his father, Send the lad with us, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and also our little ones.	8 Иуда сказал Израилю, отцу своему: «Пусть Вениамин идёт со мной, я позабочусь о нём. Мы должны пойти в Египет за едой, а если не пойдём, то все умрём и наши дети с нами.
9 And I will be surety for him; of my hands shall you require him; if I do not bring him back to you, and set him before you, then I shall be guilty before my father forever;	9 Я ручаюсь за его безопасность и отвечаю за него. Если я не приведу его к тебе обратно, то можешь считать меня виновным навеки.
10 For if we had not delayed, perhaps we would have now returned a second time.	10 Если бы ты отпустил нас раньше, мы бы уже сходили два раза».
11 And their father Israel said to them, If it must be so now, then do this: take some of the best fruits of the land in your sacks, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, gum, and myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds;	11 И сказал тогда их отец Израиль: «Если это так, то берите с собой Вениамина и захватите с собой дары для правителя. Возьмите то, что мы сумели собрать на своей земле: мёд, фисташки, миндаль, пряности и мирру,
12 And take double money with you; and the money that was brought back in the mouth of your sacks, take it again with you; perhaps it was an oversight;	12 и на этот раз возьмите с собой вдвое больше денег. Возьмите те деньги, которые вам возвратили в прошлый раз, может быть, правитель ошибся.
13 Take also your brother, and arise, and go again to the man;	13 Возьмите Вениамина и отправляйтесь обратно к тому человеку.
14 And may God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin with you. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.	14 Я молю Всемогущего Бога помочь вам, когда предстанете перед правителем, молю, чтобы он дал Вениамину и Симеону возвратиться обратно невредимыми, если же нет, то горевать мне опять об утраченном сыне!»
15 So the men took the present, and they took double money with them, and Benjamin; and rose up and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.	15 Тогда, взяв с собой дары для правителя и вдвое больше денег, чем в первый раз, братья отправились в Египет, но на этот раз Вениамин тоже пошёл с ними. 17 And the servant did as Joseph had told him; and brought the men into Joseph's house.	17 Слуга исполнил приказание и привёл их в дом к Иосифу.
18 And they were afraid, when they brought them into Joseph's house; and they said, It is because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time that we are brought in; so that he may seek occasion against us, and conspire against us, that they may make us slaves, and take away our asses.	18 Братья были в страхе, когда их вели в дом к Иосифу, и говорили: «Нас привели сюда из-за тех денег, которые в прошлый раз были положены в мешки, и теперь эти деньги будут свидетельством против нас: у нас отберут ослов и обратят нас в рабство».
19 So they came near to the steward of Joseph's house and spoke with him at the door of the house,	19 У дверей дома братья подошли к слуге Иосифа, его домоправителю,
20 And said, We beseech you, O our lord, we truly came down at the first time to buy grain;	20 и сказали: «Господин, клянёмся тебе, что говорим правду: в прошлый раз мы пришли, чтобы купить еду,
21 And it came to pass when we came to the inn that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight; and we have brought it back again with us.	21 по дороге домой мы открыли свои мешки, и каждый нашёл там деньги, а как они попали туда, мы не знаем. Мы принесли их с собой обратно, чтобы вернуть тебе. Мы принесли также ещё денег, чтобы заплатить за еду, которую собираемся купить в этот раз».
22 And we have brought other money down with us to buy grain: we did not know who put our money in our sacks.	22
23 He said to them, Peace be to you, fear not; your God, and the God of your father, has put a treasure in your sacks; I had your money. And he brought Simeon out to them.	23 Слуга же ответил: «Не бойтесь, поверьте мне: должно быть, Бог ваш и Бог отца вашего положил деньги вам в мешки в дар. Я помню, что вы в прошлый раз заплатили за зерно».
24 Then the servant brought the men into Joseph's house and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he put fodder before their asses.	24 и отвёл их всех в дом к Иосифу. Там он принёс им воды омыть ноги и дал корм их ослам.

26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which they had in their hands into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the ground.	26 Когда Иосиф пришёл домой, братья поклонились ему до земли и отдали принесённые дары.
27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said to them, Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke to me? Is he still alive?	27 Иосиф поинтересовался у братьев об их жизни. «Как поживает ваш престарелый отец, о котором вы мне говорили? — спросил Иосиф. — Жив ли он ещё и здоров ли?»
28 And they answered, Your servant our father is well. he is still alive. And they bowed down their heads and made obeisance.	28 «Да, господин, — ответили братья, — наш отец ещё жив», и снова поклонились Иосифу.
29 And he raised up his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said to them, Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me? And he said. May God be gracious to you, my son.	29 И в этот момент Иосиф увидел своего брата Вениамина, с которым у него была одна мать, и спросил: «Это и есть ваш младший брат, о котором вы мне говорили?» Вениамину же Иосиф сказал: «Да благословит тебя Бог, сын мой!» —
30 And Joseph made haste; for his heart did yearn for his brother; and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber and wept there.	30 и быстро удалился из комнаты, так как его охватило чувство любви к брату и он готов был заплакать. Иосиф вошёл в свою комнату и там плакал,
31 Then he washed his face and went out and controlled his emotions and said, Let us eat.	31 а потом ополоснул лицо и вернулся. Овладев собой, он сказал: «Подавайте кушанья!»
32 And they served Joseph by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians, who did eat with him, by themselves; because the Egyptians could not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.	32 Слуги подали Иосифу за отдельным столом, братьев посадили за другой стол, а египтяне сидели отдельно, так как считали, что им не подобает есть с евреями.
33 And they sat before him, the first-born according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth; and the men looked at one another and marveled.	33 Братья Иосифа сидели прямо перед ним за своим столом по старшинству: от старшего до младшего — и переглядывались между собой, дивясь происходящему.

And they drank and were merry with him.	34 Слуги стали брать блюда со стола Иосифа и подносить им, а Вениамину подавали в пять раз больше, чем остальным. Братья ели и пили с Иосифом, пока не напились почти допьяна.
