Chapter 7

1 A GOOD name is better than a precious ointment; and the day of one's death than the day of his birth.

2 It is better to go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting; for this is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

3 Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

5 It is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools.

6 For as the crackling of thorns burning under a pot, so is the laughter of fools; this is also vanity.

7 Surely slander destroys a wise man; and a bribe destroys the heart.

8 Better is the end of a thing than its beginning; and the patient man in humbleness is better than the proud in spirit.

9 Be not hastily angry, for anger rests in the bosom of the fools.

10 Say not, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? For you do not enquire wisely concerning this.

11 Wisdom is better than weapons; yea, it is better for those who see the light of the truth.

12 For the protection of wisdom is like the protection of money; and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to him who possesses it.

13 Consider the work of God; for who can straighten him who is crooked?

14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, but look after yourself in the day of adversity. God also has made one thing opposite to another, to the end that man should know nothing after he is gone.

15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity; there is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs his life in his wickedness.

16 Be not overrighteous; neither make yourself overwise; lest you should become stupid.

17 Be not excessively wicked, lest you be hated much; neither be foolish, lest you die before your time.

18 It is good that you should take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not your hand; for he who reverences God shall follow all these things.

19 Wisdom strengthens the wise more than ten princes that are in the city.

20 For there is no just man upon the earth, that does good, and sins not.

21 Also take no heed of all words that are spoken by the wicked; neither listen to your servant when he curses you;

22 For your heart knows that you yourself have oftentimes cursed others.

23 I have tried all these things by wisdom; I said, I will be wise; but wisdom was far from me.

24 Yea, wisdom was far off; it also had depth beyond depth; who can find it out?

25 I went around and applied my heart to know and to visit and to search for wisdom and reason and to know the wickedness of the fool, even folly and transgression.

26 And I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and whose hands bind him who is good; he who is good in the presence of God shall escape from her; but he who sins shall be caught by her.

27 Behold, I have found this, says the Preacher, weighing one thing against another to find out the purposes,

28 And again my soul sought but I found not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all these I have not found.

29 But behold, this thing I have found, that God has made men upright; but they have sought out many devices.

1 Доброе имя лучше дорогих удовольствий, день смерти даже лучше дня рождения.

2 Лучше пойти на похороны, чем на веселье, потому что все должны умереть, и каждый живущий должен с этим примириться.

3 Скорбь лучше смеха, потому что, когда на лице печаль, тогда сердце исполняется мудростью.

4 Мудрый думает о смерти, а глупый только о том, как получше провести время.

5 Лучше услышать укоры мудрого, чем восхваления глупца.

6 Смех глупых так же бессмыслен, как попытка поджечь терновник, чтобы согреть котёл: терновник сгорает слишком быстро, и котёл остаётся холодным.

7 Даже мудрый забудет мудрость свою, если ему много заплатят. Деньги уничтожат его разум.

8 Заканчивать дело лучше, чем начинать, и лучше быть кротким и терпеливым, чем высокомерным и горделивым.

9 Не впадай быстро в гнев, потому что гнев присущ глупцам.

10 Не спрашивай: «Почему раньше жизнь была лучше?» Мудрость не задаёт такой вопрос.

11 Мудрость подобна наследству — каждый от неё получает пользу и доход.

12 Мудрость даёт защиту, как дают защиту деньги, но мудрость лучше любых денег, потому что может спасти своему владельцу жизнь.

13 Посмотри на то, что сделал Бог, ты ничего не можешь изменить, даже если считаешь неправильным дело Его.

14 Радуйся жизни, когда она хороша, но, когда она тяжела, помни, что Бог нам даёт и добрые времена, и плохие, и никто не знает, что произойдёт в будущем.

15 Видел я за свою короткую жизнь как добрых людей, умирающих молодыми, так и злых, живущих долгую жизнь.

16 Зачем губить свою жизнь? Не выставляй себя слишком праведным и слишком мудрым. Не будь слишком плох и слишком глуп. Зачем тебе умирать преждевременно?

18 Хорошо придерживаться этого правила и от других не отступать, потому что тот, кто боится Бога, преуспеет и в том, и в другом.

19 Мудрость даёт человеку силу. Один мудрец сильнее десяти правителей города. Нет на земле такого человека, который делает только добро и никогда не грешит.

21 Не слушай всего, что говорят люди, ведь ты можешь услышать, как твой слуга говорит о тебе плохо.

22 Ты знаешь, что и ты сам много раз говорил о других плохо.

23 Обратившись к мудрости, я всё тщательно обдумал; я хотел быть воистину мудрым, но не смог.

24 Я не могу понять, почему всё происходит так, как происходит, понять это слишком трудно для кого бы то ни было.

25 Я учился и старался всеми силами обрести истинную мудрость, пытаясь найти причину всего. Чему научился я? Я понял, что глупо быть злым, а вести себя глупо — равносильно безумству.

26 И ещё я понял, что некоторые женщины опасны, словно ловушки, их сердца как сети, а руки как цепи. И быть пойманным такой женщиной хуже самой смерти. Кто следует Богу, тот избежит её, но грешник станет её добычей.

27 Учитель говорит: «Я собрал всё это знание вместе, чтобы увидеть, какой ответ могу я найти, но до сих пор ищу его. В результате поисков своих я нашёл лишь одного доброго мужчину из тысячи, а доброй женщины не нашёл ни одной.

29 Вот к какому выводу я пришёл: Бог праведными создал людей, но они нашли много путей к злу».

15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity; there is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs his life in his wickedness.	15 Видел я за свою короткую жизнь как добрых людей, умирающих молодыми, так и злых, живущих долгую жизнь.
16 Be not overrighteous; neither make yourself overwise; lest you should become stupid.	16 Зачем губить свою жизнь? Не выставляй себя слишком праведным и слишком мудрым. Не будь слишком плох и слишком глуп. Зачем тебе умирать преждевременно?

18 It is good that you should take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not your hand; for he who reverences God shall follow all these things.	18 Хорошо придерживаться этого правила и от других не отступать, потому что тот, кто боится Бога, преуспеет и в том, и в другом.

23 I have tried all these things by wisdom; I said, I will be wise; but wisdom was far from me.	23 Обратившись к мудрости, я всё тщательно обдумал; я хотел быть воистину мудрым, но не смог.
24 Yea, wisdom was far off; it also had depth beyond depth; who can find it out?	24 Я не могу понять, почему всё происходит так, как происходит, понять это слишком трудно для кого бы то ни было.
25 I went around and applied my heart to know and to visit and to search for wisdom and reason and to know the wickedness of the fool, even folly and transgression.	25 Я учился и старался всеми силами обрести истинную мудрость, пытаясь найти причину всего. Чему научился я? Я понял, что глупо быть злым, а вести себя глупо — равносильно безумству.
26 And I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and whose hands bind him who is good; he who is good in the presence of God shall escape from her; but he who sins shall be caught by her.	26 И ещё я понял, что некоторые женщины опасны, словно ловушки, их сердца как сети, а руки как цепи. 27 Behold, I have found this, says the Preacher, weighing one thing against another to find out the purposes,	27 Учитель говорит: «Я собрал всё это знание вместе, чтобы увидеть, какой ответ могу я найти, но до сих пор ищу его. В результате поисков своих я нашёл лишь одного доброго мужчину из тысячи, а доброй женщины не нашёл ни одной.
28 And again my soul sought but I found not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all these I have not found.	28
