Chapter 18

1 AND the LORD revealed himself to him by the oak of Mamre, as he was sitting at the door of the tent in the heat of the day;

2 And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, three men stood at a distance from him; and when he saw them, he ran from the door of the tent to meet them and bowed himself to the ground,

3 And said, O LORD, if now I have found mercy in thy sight, do not pass away from thy servant;

4 Let me bring a little water and wash your feet and rest yourselves under the tree;

5 And take a morsel of bread and sustain your hearts; after that you shall go on your way, since you have come to your servant. And they said, So do as you have said.

6 So Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine flour, knead it, and make cakes on a griddle.

7 And Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf fat and good, and gave it to a servant, and he hastened to prepare it.

8 And he took butter and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and set them before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they ate.

9 And they said to him, Where is Sarah your wife? And he said, Behold, she is in the tent.

10 And the LORD said, I will certainly return to you at this time next year, and 1o, Sarah your wife shall be with child, and shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door which was behind her.

11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well advanced in years; and Sarah was beyond the age of childbearing.

12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am grown old, shall I renew my youth, my lord being old also?

13 And the LORD said to Abraham, Why did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I truly bear a child, when I am so old?

14 Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return to you at this season, and Sarah your wife shall be with child, and shall have a son.

15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I did not laugh; because she was afraid. And he said, No; but you did laugh.

16 And the men rose up from there and looked toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to see them off.

17 And the LORD said, Shall I hide from my servant Abraham the thing which I am going to do,

18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed through him?

19 For I know him well, and that he will command his children and his household after him, to keep the ways of the LORD, to do justice and righteousness; for the LORD shall fulfil for Abraham the thing that he has spoken concerning him.

20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah has come before me and their sins are very grievous,

21 I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to their cry which has come before me; and if not, I will know.

22 So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom; but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.

23 And Abraham drew near and said, Wilt thou in thine anger destroy the righteous with the sinners?

24 Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; wilt thou in thine anger destroy it, and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous that are in it?

25 Far be it from thee to do such a thing as this, to slay the innocent with the guilty, far be it from thee, O thou Judge of the whole earth! Such a judgment should never be carried out.

26 And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole country for their sake.

27 And Abraham answered and said, Behold, I have ventured to speak before the LORD, and yet I am but dust and ashes;

28 Suppose there shall lack five of the fifty righteous; wilt thou destroy the whole city for the lack of five men? And he said, If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it.

29 And Abraham spoke to him and said, Suppose there shall be forty found there? And he said, I will not destroy it, if I find there forty.

30 Then Abraham said, Oh let not the LORD be displeased and I will speak: Suppose there shall thirty be found there? And he said, I will not destroy it, if I find thirty there.

31 And he said, Behold, I have ventured to speak before the LORD; suppose there shall be twenty found there? And he said, I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.

32 And he said, Oh, let not the LORD be displeased, and I will speak only once more; suppose ten shall be found there? And he said, I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.

33 And the LORD went his way when he had finished communing with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.

1 Господь явился Аврааму у дубравы Мамре, когда он сидел у входа в свой шатер во время дневного зноя.

2 Авраам поднял взгляд и увидел, что неподалеку стоят три человека. Увидев их, он побежал от входа в шатер им навстречу и поклонился до земли.

3 Он сказал: — Если я нашел милость в Твоих глазах, Владыка, не пройди мимо Твоего слуги.

4 Пусть принесут немного воды, чтобы вам вымыть ноги и отдохнуть под этим деревом,

5 а я принесу вам что-нибудь поесть. Вы подкрепитесь и продолжите свой путь — раз уж вы пришли к вашему слуге. — Очень хорошо, — ответили они. — Делай, как говоришь.

6 Авраам поспешил в шатер к Сарре и сказал: — Скорее, достань три саты лучшей муки, замеси тесто и испеки хлеба.

7 Затем он побежал к стаду, выбрал лучшего, нежного теленка и отдал слуге, который быстро приготовил его.

8 Потом он принес творога, молока и приготовленного теленка и поставил перед ними. Пока они ели, он стоял рядом с ними под деревом.

9 — Где твоя жена Сарра? — спросили они. — Там, в шатре, — ответил он.

10 Тогда Господь сказал: — Я непременно вернусь к тебе в следующем году, примерно в это же время, и у Сарры, твоей жены, будет сын. Сарра слушала, стоя у Него за спиной, у входа в шатер.

11 Авраам и Сарра были уже стары и в преклонных годах, и то, что обычно бывает у женщин, у Сарры прекратилось.

12 Поэтому Сарра рассмеялась про себя, подумав: «Я уже состарилась, и господин мой стар; мне ли иметь еще такую радость?»

13 Тогда Господь сказал Аврааму: — Почему Сарра смеется и говорит: «Неужели у меня в самом деле будет ребенок, ведь я стара?»

14 Есть ли что-нибудь слишком трудное для Господа? Я вернусь к тебе через год в назначенное время, и у Сарры будет сын.

15 Сарра испугалась и солгала, сказав: — Я не смеялась. Но Он сказал: — Нет, ты смеялась.

16 Мужи поднялись и пошли в сторону Содома. Авраам же пошел с ними, чтобы проводить их.

17 Господь сказал: — Скрою ли Я от Авраама то, что собираюсь сделать?

18 От Авраама непременно произойдет великий и сильный народ, и все народы на земле получат благословение через него.

19 Ведь Я избрал его, чтобы он заповедал своим детям и всем своим потомкам хранить путь Господа, поступая правильно и справедливо, чтобы Господь исполнил то, что обещал Аврааму.

20 Господь сказал: — Вопль против Содома и Гоморры так велик, их грех так тяжек,

21 что Я сойду и посмотрю, верен ли вопль, достигший Меня, так ли скверно они поступают. Если нет, Я узнаю.

22 Мужи повернулись и пошли к Содому, но Господь остался стоять перед Авраамом.

23 Авраам приблизился к Нему и сказал: — Неужели Ты уничтожишь праведного вместе с грешным?

24 Что, если в городе есть пятьдесят праведников? Неужели Ты уничтожишь и не пощадишь этого места ради пятидесяти праведников?

25 Не можешь Ты сделать такое — погубить праведного вместе с нечестивым, обойтись с праведным и нечестивым одинаково. Не можешь Ты сделать так! Разве Судья всей земли может творить неправду?

26 Господь сказал: — Если Я найду в Содоме пятьдесят праведников, то пощажу ради них все это место.

27 Тогда Авраам сказал вновь: — Вот, я осмелился говорить с Владыкой, хотя я лишь прах и пепел;

28 что, если число праведных на пять меньше пятидесяти? Уничтожишь ли Ты весь город из-за пяти человек? — Если Я найду там сорок пять, — ответил Он, — то не уничтожу его.

29 Авраам обратился к Нему еще раз: — Что, если там найдутся лишь сорок? Он ответил: — Ради сорока Я не сделаю этого.

30 Тогда тот сказал: — Да не разгневается Владыка, но позволит мне сказать. Что, если найдутся там только тридцать? Он ответил: — Я не сделаю этого, если найду там тридцать.

31 Авраам сказал: — Вот, я был так смел, что решился говорить Владыке. Что, если найдутся там лишь двадцать? Он сказал: — Ради двадцати Я не уничтожу его.

32 Тогда Авраам сказал: — Да не разгневается Владыка, но позволит мне сказать еще лишь один раз. Что, если найдутся там лишь десять? Он ответил: — Ради десяти Я не уничтожу его.

33 Когда Господь закончил говорить с Авраамом, Он ушел, а Авраам вернулся домой.

2 And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, three men stood at a distance from him; and when he saw them, he ran from the door of the tent to meet them and bowed himself to the ground,	2 Авраам поднял взгляд и увидел, что неподалеку стоят три человека. Увидев их, он побежал от входа в шатер им навстречу и поклонился до земли.
3 And said, O LORD, if now I have found mercy in thy sight, do not pass away from thy servant;	3 Он сказал: — Если я нашел милость в Твоих глазах, Владыка, не пройди мимо Твоего слуги.
4 Let me bring a little water and wash your feet and rest yourselves under the tree;	4 Пусть принесут немного воды, чтобы вам вымыть ноги и отдохнуть под этим деревом,
5 And take a morsel of bread and sustain your hearts; after that you shall go on your way, since you have come to your servant. And they said, So do as you have said.	5 а я принесу вам что-нибудь поесть. Вы подкрепитесь и продолжите свой путь — раз уж вы пришли к вашему слуге. — Очень хорошо, — ответили они. — Делай, как говоришь.
6 So Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine flour, knead it, and make cakes on a griddle.	6 Авраам поспешил в шатер к Сарре и сказал: — Скорее, достань три саты лучшей муки, замеси тесто и испеки хлеба.
7 And Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf fat and good, and gave it to a servant, and he hastened to prepare it.	7 Затем он побежал к стаду, выбрал лучшего, нежного теленка и отдал слуге, который быстро приготовил его.
8 And he took butter and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and set them before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they ate.	8 Потом он принес творога, молока и приготовленного теленка и поставил перед ними. Пока они ели, он стоял рядом с ними под деревом.
9 And they said to him, Where is Sarah your wife? And he said, Behold, she is in the tent.	9 — Где твоя жена Сарра? — спросили они. — Там, в шатре, — ответил он.
10 And the LORD said, I will certainly return to you at this time next year, and 1o, Sarah your wife shall be with child, and shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door which was behind her.	10 Тогда Господь сказал: — Я непременно вернусь к тебе в следующем году, примерно в это же время, и у Сарры, твоей жены, будет сын. Сарра слушала, стоя у Него за спиной, у входа в шатер.
11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well advanced in years; and Sarah was beyond the age of childbearing.	11 Авраам и Сарра были уже стары и в преклонных годах, и то, что обычно бывает у женщин, у Сарры прекратилось.
12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am grown old, shall I renew my youth, my lord being old also?	12 Поэтому Сарра рассмеялась про себя, подумав: «Я уже состарилась, и господин мой стар; мне ли иметь еще такую радость?»
13 And the LORD said to Abraham, Why did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I truly bear a child, when I am so old?	13 Тогда Господь сказал Аврааму: — Почему Сарра смеется и говорит: «Неужели у меня в самом деле будет ребенок, ведь я стара?»
14 Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return to you at this season, and Sarah your wife shall be with child, and shall have a son.	14 Есть ли что-нибудь слишком трудное для Господа? Я вернусь к тебе через год в назначенное время, и у Сарры будет сын.
15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I did not laugh; because she was afraid. And he said, No; but you did laugh.	15 Сарра испугалась и солгала, сказав: — Я не смеялась. Но Он сказал: — Нет, ты смеялась.
16 And the men rose up from there and looked toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to see them off.	16 Мужи поднялись и пошли в сторону Содома. Авраам же пошел с ними, чтобы проводить их.
17 And the LORD said, Shall I hide from my servant Abraham the thing which I am going to do,	17 Господь сказал: — Скрою ли Я от Авраама то, что собираюсь сделать?
18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed through him?	18 От Авраама непременно произойдет великий и сильный народ, и все народы на земле получат благословение через него.
19 For I know him well, and that he will command his children and his household after him, to keep the ways of the LORD, to do justice and righteousness; for the LORD shall fulfil for Abraham the thing that he has spoken concerning him.	19 Ведь Я избрал его, чтобы он заповедал своим детям и всем своим потомкам хранить путь Господа, поступая правильно и справедливо, чтобы Господь исполнил то, что обещал Аврааму.
20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah has come before me and their sins are very grievous,	20 Господь сказал: — Вопль против Содома и Гоморры так велик, их грех так тяжек,
21 I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to their cry which has come before me; and if not, I will know.	21 что Я сойду и посмотрю, верен ли вопль, достигший Меня, так ли скверно они поступают. Если нет, Я узнаю.
22 So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom; but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.	22 Мужи повернулись и пошли к Содому, но Господь остался стоять перед Авраамом.
23 And Abraham drew near and said, Wilt thou in thine anger destroy the righteous with the sinners?	23 Авраам приблизился к Нему и сказал: — Неужели Ты уничтожишь праведного вместе с грешным?
24 Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; wilt thou in thine anger destroy it, and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous that are in it?	24 Что, если в городе есть пятьдесят праведников? Неужели Ты уничтожишь и не пощадишь этого места ради пятидесяти праведников?
25 Far be it from thee to do such a thing as this, to slay the innocent with the guilty, far be it from thee, O thou Judge of the whole earth! Such a judgment should never be carried out.	25 Не можешь Ты сделать такое — погубить праведного вместе с нечестивым, обойтись с праведным и нечестивым одинаково. Не можешь Ты сделать так! Разве Судья всей земли может творить неправду?
26 And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole country for their sake.	26 Господь сказал: — Если Я найду в Содоме пятьдесят праведников, то пощажу ради них все это место.
27 And Abraham answered and said, Behold, I have ventured to speak before the LORD, and yet I am but dust and ashes;	27 Тогда Авраам сказал вновь: — Вот, я осмелился говорить с Владыкой, хотя я лишь прах и пепел;
28 Suppose there shall lack five of the fifty righteous; wilt thou destroy the whole city for the lack of five men? And he said, If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it.	28 что, если число праведных на пять меньше пятидесяти? Уничтожишь ли Ты весь город из-за пяти человек? — Если Я найду там сорок пять, — ответил Он, — то не уничтожу его.
29 And Abraham spoke to him and said, Suppose there shall be forty found there? And he said, I will not destroy it, if I find there forty.	29 Авраам обратился к Нему еще раз: — Что, если там найдутся лишь сорок? Он ответил: — Ради сорока Я не сделаю этого.
30 Then Abraham said, Oh let not the LORD be displeased and I will speak: Suppose there shall thirty be found there? And he said, I will not destroy it, if I find thirty there.	30 Тогда тот сказал: — Да не разгневается Владыка, но позволит мне сказать. Что, если найдутся там только тридцать? Он ответил: — Я не сделаю этого, если найду там тридцать.
31 And he said, Behold, I have ventured to speak before the LORD; suppose there shall be twenty found there? And he said, I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.	31 Авраам сказал: — Вот, я был так смел, что решился говорить Владыке. Что, если найдутся там лишь двадцать? Он сказал: — Ради двадцати Я не уничтожу его.
32 And he said, Oh, let not the LORD be displeased, and I will speak only once more; suppose ten shall be found there? And he said, I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.	32 Тогда Авраам сказал: — Да не разгневается Владыка, но позволит мне сказать еще лишь один раз. Что, если найдутся там лишь десять? Он ответил: — Ради десяти Я не уничтожу его.
33 And the LORD went his way when he had finished communing with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.	33 Когда Господь закончил говорить с Авраамом, Он ушел, а Авраам вернулся домой.
