Chapter 26

1 AND there was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Gadar, to Abimeleck king of the Philistines.

2 And the LORD appeared to him, and said, Do not go down to Egypt; dwell in the land of which I shall tell you;

3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you; for to you and to your descendants I will give all these kingdoms, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father;

4 And I will make your descendants to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give to your descendants all these lands; and by your descendants shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

6 And Isaac dwelt in Gadar;

7 And the men of the place asked him concerning his wife; and he said, She is my sister; for he was afraid to say, She is my wife; lest the men of the place should kill him on account of Rebekah, because she was fair to look upon.

8 And it came to pass when he had been there a long time that Abimeleck king of the Philistines looked out of a window and saw Isaac fondling Rebekah his wife.

9 So Abimeleck called Isaac, and said, Behold, she is your wife; how then did you say, She is my sister? And Isaac said to him, Because I said, Lest I may die on account of her.

10 And Abimeleck said to him, What is this thing that you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought sin upon us.

11 And Abimeleck charged all the people, saying, Whoever harms this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year a hundredfold; and the LORD blessed him.

13 And the man became great, and went forward and grew until he became very great;

14 And he had possessions of flocks and possessions of herds and much wealth, so that the Philistines envied him.

15 For all the wells which his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had polluted them and filled them with earth.

16 And Abimeleck said to Isaac, Go away from among us; for you are much mightier than we.

17 So Isaac departed from thence, and encamped in the valley of Gadar, and dwelt there.

18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water which had been dug by the servants of his father in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had polluted them after the death of Abraham; and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.

19 And Isaac's servants dug in the valley, and found there a well of living water.

20 And the herdsmen of Gadar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, The water is ours; and he called the name of the well Aska (difficulty); because they disputed with him.

21 And they dug another well, and they quarreled over that also; and he called the name of it Satana (the adversary).

22 Then he moved from there, and dug another well; but over that they did not quarrel; and he called the name of it Rehoboth (to enlarge); and he said, For now the LORD has made room for us, and we shall multiply in the land.

23 And he went up from thence to Beer-sheba.

24 And the LORD appeared to him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham your father; fear not, for I am with you, and I will bless you, and multiply your descendants for my servant Abraham's sake.

25 And he built an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there; and there Isaac's servants dug a well.

26 Then Abimeleck went to him from Gadar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the general of his army.

27 And Isaac said to them, Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me, and have sent me away from you?

28 And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD is with you; so we said, Let there be now an oath between us and you, and let us make a covenant with you,

29 That you will do us no evil, just as we have not hurt you, and as we have done nothing but good to you, and have sent you away in peace; you are now the blessed of the LORD.

30 And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink.

31 And they rose up in the early morning, and took oaths one with another; and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

32 And it came to pass the same day that Isaac's servants came, and spoke to him concerning the well which they had dug, and said to him, We have found water.

33 And he called it Sheba; therefore the name of the town is called Beer-sheba to this day.

34 And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bismath the daughter of Elon the Hivite;

35 And they made life miserable for Isaac and Rebekah.

2 And the LORD3068 appeared7200 to him, and said,559 Go3381 not down3381 into Egypt;4714 dwell7931 in the land776 which834 I shall tell559 you of:

4 And I will make your seed2233 to multiply7235 as the stars3556 of heaven,8064 and will give5414 to your seed2233 all3605 these411 countries;776 and in your seed2233 shall all3605 the nations1471 of the earth776 be blessed;1288

5 Because6118 that Abraham85 obeyed8085 my voice,6963 and kept8104 my charge,4931 my commandments,4687 my statutes,2708 and my laws.8451

6 And Isaac3327 dwelled3427 in Gerar:1642

7 And the men582 of the place4725 asked7592 him of his wife;802 and he said,559 She is my sister:269 for he feared3372 to say,559 She is my wife;802 lest,6435 said559 he, the men582 of the place4725 should kill2026 me for Rebekah;7259 because3588 she was fair2896 to look4758 on.

8 And it came1961 to pass, when3588 he had been there8033 a long748 time,3117 that Abimelech40 king4428 of the Philistines6430 looked8259 out at1157 a window,2474 and saw,7200 and, behold,2009 Isaac3327 was sporting6711 with Rebekah7259 his wife.802

9 And Abimelech40 called7121 Isaac,3327 and said,559 Behold,2009 of a surety389 she is your wife;802 and how349 said559 you, She is my sister?269 And Isaac3327 said559 to him, Because3588 I said,559 Lest6435 I die4191 for her.

10 And Abimelech40 said,559 What4100 is this2063 you have done6213 to us? one259 of the people5971 might lightly4592 have lien7901 with your wife,802 and you should have brought935 guiltiness817 on us.

11 And Abimelech40 charged6680 all3605 his people,5971 saying,559 He that touches5060 this2088 man376 or his wife802 shall surely be put to death.4191

12 Then Isaac3327 sowed2232 in that land,776 and received4672 in the same1931 year8141 an hundred times:3967 8180 and the LORD3068 blessed1288 him.

13 And the man376 waxed great,1431 and went3212 forward,1980 and grew1432 until5704 he became1431 very3966 great:1431

14 For he had possession4735 of flocks,6629 and possession4735 of herds,1241 and great7227 store of servants:5657 and the Philistines6430 envied7065 him.

15 For all3605 the wells875 which834 his father's1 servants5650 had dig2658 in the days3117 of Abraham85 his father,1 the Philistines6430 had stopped5640 them, and filled4390 them with earth.6083

16 And Abimelech40 said559 to Isaac,3327 Go3212 from us; for you are much3966 mightier6105 than we.

17 And Isaac3327 departed3212 there,8033 and pitched2583 his tent in the valley5158 of Gerar,1642 and dwelled3427 there.8033

18 And Isaac3327 dig2658 again7725 the wells875 of water,4325 which834 they had dig2658 in the days3117 of Abraham85 his father;1 for the Philistines6430 had stopped5640 them after310 the death4194 of Abraham:85 and he called7121 their names8034 after the names8034 by which834 his father1 had called7121 them.

19 And Isaac's3327 servants5650 dig2658 in the valley,5158 and found4672 there8033 a well875 of springing2416 water.4325

20 And the herdsmen7462 of Gerar1642 did strive7378 with Isaac's3327 herdsmen,7462 saying,559 The water4325 is ours: and he called7121 the name8034 of the well875 Esek;6230 because3588 they strove6229 with him.

21 And they dig2658 another312 well,875 and strove7378 for that also:1571 and he called7121 the name8034 of it Sitnah.7856

22 And he removed6275 from there,8033 and dig2658 another312 well;875 and for that they strove7378 not: and he called7121 the name8034 of it Rehoboth;7344 and he said,559 For now6258 the LORD3068 has made room7337 for us, and we shall be fruitful6509 in the land.776

23 And he went5927 up from there8033 to Beersheba.884

24 And the LORD3068 appeared7200 to him the same1931 night,3915 and said,559 I am the God430 of Abraham85 your father:1 fear3372 not, for I am with you, and will bless1288 you, and multiply7235 your seed2233 for my servant5650 Abraham's85 sake.5668

25 And he built1129 an altar4196 there,8033 and called7121 on the name8034 of the LORD,3068 and pitched5186 his tent168 there:8033 and there8033 Isaac's3327 servants5650 dig3738 a well.875

26 Then Abimelech40 went1980 to him from Gerar,1642 and Ahuzzath276 one of his friends,4828 and Phichol6369 the chief captain8269 of his army.6635

27 And Isaac3327 said559 to them, Why4069 come935 you to me, seeing you hate8130 me, and have sent7971 me away from you?

28 And they said,559 We saw7200 certainly that the LORD3068 was with you: and we said,559 Let there be now4994 an oath423 between996 us, even between996 us and you, and let us make3772 a covenant1285 with you;

30 And he made6213 them a feast,4960 and they did eat398 and drink.8354

31 And they rose7925 up betimes7925 in the morning,1242 and swore7650 one376 to another:251 and Isaac3327 sent7971 them away, and they departed3212 from him in peace.7965

32 And it came1961 to pass the same day,3117 that Isaac's3327 servants5650 came,935 and told5608 him concerning5921 182 the well875 which834 they had dig,2658 and said559 to him, We have found4672 water.4325

33 And he called7121 it Shebah:7656 therefore5921 3651 the name8034 of the city5892 is Beersheba884 to this2088 day.3117
