Proverbs

Chapter 25

1 These428 are also1571 proverbs4912 of Solomon,8010 which834 the men582 of Hezekiah2396 king4428 of Judah3063 copied6275 out.

2 It is the glory3519 of God430 to conceal5641 a thing:1697 but the honor3519 of kings4428 is to search2713 out a matter.1697

3 The heaven8064 for height,7312 and the earth776 for depth,6012 and the heart3820 of kings4428 is unsearchable.369 2714

4 Take1898 away1898 the dross5509 from the silver,3701 and there shall come3318 forth3318 a vessel3627 for the finer.6884

5 Take1898 away1898 the wicked7563 from before6440 the king,4428 and his throne3678 shall be established3559 in righteousness.6664

6 Put1921 not forth1921 yourself in the presence6440 of the king,4428 and stand5975 not in the place4725 of great1419 men:

7 For better2896 it is that it be said559 to you, Come5927 up here;2008 than that you should be put lower8213 in the presence6440 of the prince5081 whom834 your eyes5869 have seen.7200

8 Go3318 not forth3318 hastily4118 to strive,7378 lest6435 you know not what4100 to do6213 in the end319 thereof, when your neighbor7453 has put you to shame.3637

9 Debate7378 your cause7379 with your neighbor7453 himself; and discover1540 not a secret5475 to another:312

10 Lest6435 he that hears8085 it put you to shame,2616 and your infamy1681 turn7725 not away.

11 A word1697 fitly5921 655 spoken1696 is like apples8598 of gold2091 in pictures4906 of silver.3701

12 As an earring5141 of gold,2091 and an ornament2481 of fine gold,3800 so3651 is a wise2450 reprover3198 on an obedient8085 ear.241

13 As the cold6793 of snow7950 in the time3117 of harvest,7105 so3651 is a faithful539 messenger6735 to them that send7971 him: for he refreshes7725 the soul5315 of his masters.113

14 Whoever376 834 boasts1984 himself of a false8267 gift4991 is like clouds5387 and wind7307 without369 rain.1653

15 By long753 forbearing639 is a prince7101 persuaded,6601 and a soft7390 tongue3956 breaks7665 the bone.1634

16 Have you found4672 honey?1706 eat398 so3651 much1767 as is sufficient1767 for you, lest6435 you be filled7646 therewith, and vomit6958 it.

17 Withdraw3365 your foot7272 from your neighbor's7453 house;1004 lest6435 he be weary7646 of you, and so3651 hate8130 you.

18 A man376 that bears6030 false8267 witness5707 against his neighbor7453 is a maul,4650 and a sword,2719 and a sharp8150 arrow.2671

19 Confidence4009 in an unfaithful898 man in time3117 of trouble6869 is like a broken7465 tooth,8127 and a foot7272 out of joint.4154

20 As he that takes5710 away5710 a garment899 in cold7135 weather,3117 and as vinegar2558 on nitre,5427 so3651 is he that singes7891 songs7892 to an heavy7451 heart.3820

21 If518 your enemy8130 be hungry,7456 give him bread3899 to eat;398 and if518 he be thirsty,6771 give him water4325 to drink:8248

22 For you shall heap2846 coals1513 of fire on his head,7218 and the LORD3068 shall reward7999 you.

23 The north6828 wind7307 drives2342 away rain:1653 so3651 does an angry2194 countenance6440 a backbiting5643 tongue.3956

24 It is better2896 to dwell3427 in the corner6438 of the housetop,1406 than with a brawling4090 woman802 and in a wide2267 house.1004

25 As cold7119 waters4325 to a thirsty soul,5315 so3651 is good2896 news8052 from a far4801 country.776

26 A righteous6662 man falling4131 down before6440 the wicked7563 is as a troubled7515 fountain,4599 and a corrupt7843 spring.4726

27 It is not good2896 to eat398 much7235 honey:1706 so3651 for men to search2714 their own glory3519 is not glory.3519

28 He that has no369 rule4623 over his own spirit7307 is like a city5892 that is broken6555 down, and without369 walls.2346

Proverbs

Chapter 25

1 THESE are also profound proverbs of Solomon which the friends of Hezekiah king of Judah wrote.

2 It is the glory of God to keep secret a matter; but the glory of the king is to search it out.

3 The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of the king is unsearchable.

4 Purge dross from silver that it may come forth a pure vessel.

5 Let wicked men be driven from the presence of the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.

6 Do not glorify yourself in the presence of the king, and do not stand in the place of great men;

7 For it is better that it be said to you, Come up higher, than that you should be put lower. In the presence of the ruler report what your eyes have seen.

8 Do not go forth hastily to bring a suit, lest when you plead your cause, at the end your neighbor shall reproach you.

9 Debate your cause with your neighbor himself; and do not disclose the secret to another,

10 Lest he who hears it reproach you and many people mock you.

11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.

12 Like an earring of gold, and a precious sardius, so is the reproof of the wise men to a listening ear.

13 Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest, which cools the air, so is a faithful messenger to those who send him; for he refreshes the soul of his masters.

14 Like clouds and wind without rain, so is the man who boasts of false gifts.

15 By long forbearing, a ruler is persuaded; and a soft tongue breaks the bones.

16 When you find honey, eat as much as is sufficient for you, lest you be filled with it and vomit it.

17 Do not visit your neighbor's house too frequently, lest he become weary of you and so hate you.

18 A man who bears false witness against his neighbor is like an iron bar, a sword, and a sharp arrow.

19 Like a sore tooth and a foot out of joint, such is the confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble.

20 As he who takes away a garment from his neighbor in cold weather, as one who drops sand on the string of a musical instrument, as he who afflicts a broken heart, as a moth on a garment, and as a boring-worm on a tree: such is the effect of sorrow on a man's heart.

21 If your enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink;

22 For when you shall do these things for him, you will heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD will reward you.

23 Like the north wind which brings forth rain, so are an evil countenance and a backbiting tongue.

24 It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop than with a quarrelsome wife and a house divided against itself.

25 Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.

26 Like a stopped fountain or a polluted spring is a righteous man when he falls down before the wicked.

27 It is not good to eat much honey, nor to search for high praises for oneself.

28 Like a breached city that has no wall, so is a man who is impatient.
