Chapter 2

1 Moreover the word1697 of the LORD3068 came1961 to me, saying,559

2 Go1980 and cry7121 in the ears241 of Jerusalem,3389 saying,559 Thus3541 said559 the LORD;3068 I remember2142 you, the kindness2617 of your youth,5271 the love160 of your espousals,3623 when you went3212 after310 me in the wilderness,4057 in a land776 that was not sown.2232

3 Israel3478 was holiness6944 to the LORD,3068 and the first fruits7225 of his increase:8393 all3605 that devour398 him shall offend;816 evil7451 shall come935 on them, said5002 the LORD.3068

4 Hear8085 you the word1697 of the LORD,3068 O house1004 of Jacob,3290 and all3605 the families4940 of the house1004 of Israel:3478

5 Thus3541 said559 the LORD,3068 What4100 iniquity5766 have your fathers1 found4672 in me, that they are gone far7368 from me, and have walked3212 after310 vanity,1892 and are become1891 vain?1891

6 Neither3808 said559 they, Where346 is the LORD3068 that brought5927 us up out of the land776 of Egypt,4714 that led3212 us through the wilderness,4057 through a land776 of deserts6160 and of pits,7745 through a land776 of drought,6723 and of the shadow6757 of death,6757 through a land776 that no3808 man376 passed5674 through, and where8033 no3808 man120 dwelled?3427

7 And I brought935 you into413 a plentiful3759 country,776 to eat398 the fruit6529 thereof and the goodness2898 thereof; but when you entered,935 you defiled2930 my land,776 and made7760 my heritage5159 an abomination.8441

8 The priests3548 said559 not, Where346 is the LORD?3068 and they that handle8610 the law8451 knew3045 me not: the pastors7462 also transgressed6586 against me, and the prophets5030 prophesied5012 by Baal,1168 and walked1980 after310 things that do not profit.3276

9 Why3651 I will yet5750 plead7378 with you, said5002 the LORD,3068 and with your children's1121 children1121 will I plead.7378

10 For pass5674 over5674 the isles339 of Chittim,3794 and see;7200 and send7971 to Kedar,6938 and consider995 diligently,3966 and see7200 if2005 there be such2063 a thing.

11 Has a nation1471 changed4171 their gods,430 which1992 are yet no3808 gods?430 but my people5971 have changed4171 their glory3519 for that which1992 does not profit.3276

12 Be astonished,8074 O you heavens,8064 at5921 this,2063 and be horribly8175 afraid,8175 be you very3966 desolate,2717 said5002 the LORD.3068

13 For my people5971 have committed6213 two8147 evils;7451 they have forsaken5800 me the fountain4726 of living2416 waters,4325 and hewed2672 them out cisterns,877 broken7665 cisterns,877 that can hold3557 no3808 water.4325

14 Is Israel3478 a servant?5650 is he a home born1004 slave? why4069 is he spoiled?957

15 The young3715 lions3715 roared7580 on him, and yelled,5414 6963 and they made7896 his land776 waste:8047 his cities5892 are burned3341 without1097 inhabitant.3427

16 Also1571 the children1121 of Noph5297 and Tahapanes8471 have broken7462 the crown6936 of your head.6936

17 Have you not procured6213 this2063 to yourself, in that you have forsaken5800 the LORD3068 your God,430 when6256 he led3212 you by the way?1870

18 And now6258 what4100 have you to do in the way1870 of Egypt,4714 to drink8354 the waters4325 of Sihor?7883 or what4100 have you to do in the way1870 of Assyria,804 to drink8354 the waters4325 of the river?5104

19 Your own wickedness7451 shall correct3256 you, and your backslidings4878 shall reprove3198 you: know3045 therefore and see7200 that it is an evil7451 thing and bitter,4751 that you have forsaken5800 the LORD3068 your God,430 and that my fear6345 is not in you, said5002 the Lord136 GOD3069 of hosts.6635

20 For of old5769 time I have broken7665 your yoke,5923 and burst5423 your bands;4147 and you said,559 I will not transgress;5647 when3588 on every3605 high1364 hill1389 and under8478 every3605 green7488 tree6086 you wander,6808 playing the harlot.2181

21 Yet I had planted5193 you a noble vine,8321 wholly3605 a right571 seed:2233 how349 then are you turned2015 into the degenerate5494 plant of a strange5237 vine1612 to me?

22 For though518 you wash3526 you with nitre,5427 and take you much7235 soap,1287 yet your iniquity5771 is marked3799 before6440 me, said5002 the Lord136 GOD.3069

23 How349 can you say,559 I am not polluted,2930 I have not gone1980 after310 Baalim?1168 see7200 your way1870 in the valley,1516 know3045 what4100 you have done:6213 you are a swift7031 dromedary1072 traversing8308 her ways;1870

24 A wild6501 ass6501 used3928 to the wilderness,4057 that snuffs7602 up the wind7307 at her pleasure;185 5315 in her occasion8385 who4310 can turn7725 her away? all3605 they that seek1245 her will not weary3286 themselves; in her month2320 they shall find4672 her.

25 Withhold4513 your foot7272 from being unshod,3182 and your throat1627 from thirst:6773 but you said,559 There is no hope:2976 no;3808 for I have loved157 strangers,2114 and after310 them will I go.3212

26 As the thief1590 is ashamed1322 when3588 he is found,4672 so3651 is the house1004 of Israel3478 ashamed;954 they, their kings,4428 their princes,8269 and their priests,3548 and their prophets.5030

27 Saying559 to a stock,6086 You are my father;1 and to a stone,68 You have brought3205 me forth:3205 for they have turned6437 their back6203 to me, and not their face:6440 but in the time6256 of their trouble7451 they will say,559 Arise,6965 and save3467 us.

28 But where346 are your gods430 that you have made6213 you? let them arise,6965 if518 they can save3467 you in the time6256 of your trouble:7451 for according to the number4557 of your cities5892 are your gods,430 O Judah.3063

29 Why4100 will you plead7378 with me? you all3605 have transgressed6586 against me, said5002 the LORD.3068

30 In vain7723 have I smitten5221 your children;1121 they received3947 no3808 correction:4148 your own sword2719 has devoured398 your prophets,5030 like a destroying7843 lion.738

31 O generation,1755 see7200 you the word1697 of the LORD.3068 Have I been1961 a wilderness4057 to Israel?3478 a land776 of darkness?3991 why4069 say559 my people,5971 We are lords;7300 we will come935 no3808 more5750 to you?

32 Can a maid1330 forget7911 her ornaments,5716 or a bride3618 her attire?7196 yet my people5971 have forgotten7911 me days3117 without369 number.4557

33 Why4100 trim3190 you your way1870 to seek1245 love?160 therefore3651 have you also1571 taught3925 the wicked7451 ones your ways.1870

34 Also1571 in your skirts3671 is found4672 the blood1818 of the souls5315 of the poor34 innocents:5355 I have not found4672 it by secret search,4290 but on all3605 these.428

35 Yet you say,559 Because3588 I am innocent,5352 surely389 his anger639 shall turn7725 from me. Behold,2005 I will plead8199 with you, because5921 you say,559 I have not sinned.2398

36 Why4100 gad235 you about235 so much3966 to change8138 your way?1870 you also1571 shall be ashamed954 of Egypt,4714 as you were ashamed954 of Assyria.804

37 Yes,1571 you shall go3318 forth3318 from him, and your hands3027 on your head:7218 for the LORD3068 has rejected3988 your confidences,4009 and you shall not prosper6743 in them.

Chapter 2

1 MOREOVER the word of the LORD came upon me, saying,

2 Go and proclaim in the ears of the people of Jerusalem, and say, Thus says the LORD: I remember you, the kindness of your youth, the love of your long-suffering; for you walked after me in the wilderness, in the land that was not sown.

3 Israel has sanctified to the LORD the first fruits of his crops; all those who embezzle them shall be condemned; evil shall come upon them, says the LORD.

4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel:

5 Thus says the LORD: What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me and have walked after vanity and have profited nothing?

6 Neither did they say, Where is the LORD who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, who led us through the wilderness, through a waste and depressed land, through a desolate land and a land of the shadow of death, a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwells?

7 And I brought you into a land of plenty, to eat its fruit and its goodness; but when you came in, you defiled my land and made my heritage an abomination.

8 The priests did not say, Where is the LORD? And those who handle the law did not know me; the leaders also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and went after things that do not profit.

9 Therefore I will yet contend with you, says the LORD; and with your children's children I will contend.

10 For cross over to the islands of China and see; and send to Kedar, and understand diligently, and see if there ever has been such a thing as this.

11 Have the Gentiles changed their gods, which are not gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit.

12 Be astonished, O heavens, at this, and tremble and be exceedingly afraid, says the LORD.

13 For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and they went and dug for themselves broken cisterns that can hold no water.

14 Is Israel a servant? If he is a homeborn heir, why then is he plundered?

15 The lions have roared against him, and growled, and they made his land waste; his villages have become desolate without inhabitants.

16 Also certain rulers of the inhabitants of Memphis and Tahapanes shall rule over you.

17 Behold, such shall be done unto you, because you have forsaken the LORD your God, at a time when he led you in his way.

18 And now, why is it that you go in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? And why is it that you go in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river (Euphrates)?

19 Your own evil shall chastise you, and your repentance shall reprove .you; know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, for you have forsaken the LORD your God, and you have not revered me, says the LORD God of hosts.

20 For of old time I have broken your yoke and cut your bands; and you said, I shall never serve another god again; and behold, now upon every high hill and under every green tree you wander, playing the harlot.

21 Yet I had planted you a good vine, wholly a right seed; why then have you turned against me and have become degenerate like a plant of a strange vine?

22 For though you wash yourself with nitre and use much sulphur, yet your sins within you are marked before me, says the LORD God.

23 How can you say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baal? See your ways in the valleys, and know what you have done: you have lifted up your voice, O you perverse in her ways;

24 You are like a wild ass which is untrained in the wilderness and follows her own will; you have snuffed up the wind, who can bring you back? Whoever seeks her shall weary himself, he shall find her only by means of her footprints.

25 Your feet are weary because they are unshod, and your throat is dry from thirst; but you said, I have become strong, I am unwilling to repent because I have loved strangers, and after them I will go.

26 As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so the children of Israel are ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets,

27 Who say to a piece of wood, You are our father; and to a stone, You have brought us forth; for they have turned their backs upon me and not their faces; but in the time of their trouble, they say, Arise and save us.

28 But where are your gods that you have made for yourself? Let them arise and save you in the time of your trouble; for according to the number of your cities are your gods, O Judah.

29 Why then do you contend with me? You all have transgressed against me, says the LORD.

30 In vain have I smitten your children; they have received no discipline; the sword has devoured your prophets like a destroying lion.

31 As for you, O generation, hear the word of the LORD. Have I been like a wilderness to Israel? Or a waste land? Wherefore then say my people, We are humiliated; we will come no more to you?

32 Can a maid forget her ornaments or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

33 Why do you deck yourself to induce love? For behold you have also learned evil by means of your conduct.

34 Also on your hands is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents; I have not found it by hard search, for it is under every tree.

35 Yet you say, Because I am innocent, therefore he will turn his anger from me. Behold, I will contend with you, because you have said, I have not sinned.

36 Why do you gad about so much to change your ways? You shall also be ashamed of Egypt, even as you were ashamed of Assyria.

37 Yea, you shall go forth from him humiliated; for the LORD is angry against those upon whom you have put your trust, and you shall not prosper with them.

26 As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so the children of Israel are ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets,

29 Why4100 will you plead7378 with me? you all3605 have transgressed6586 against me, said5002 the LORD.3068

29 Why then do you contend with me? You all have transgressed against me, says the LORD.

30 In vain7723 have I smitten5221 your children;1121 they received3947 no3808 correction:4148 your own sword2719 has devoured398 your prophets,5030 like a destroying7843 lion.738

30 In vain have I smitten your children; they have received no discipline; the sword has devoured your prophets like a destroying lion.

31 As for you, O generation, hear the word of the LORD. Have I been like a wilderness to Israel? Or a waste land? Wherefore then say my people, We are humiliated; we will come no more to you?

32 Can a maid1330 forget7911 her ornaments,5716 or a bride3618 her attire?7196 yet my people5971 have forgotten7911 me days3117 without369 number.4557

32 Can a maid forget her ornaments or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

33 Why4100 trim3190 you your way1870 to seek1245 love?160 therefore3651 have you also1571 taught3925 the wicked7451 ones your ways.1870

33 Why do you deck yourself to induce love? For behold you have also learned evil by means of your conduct.

34 Also1571 in your skirts3671 is found4672 the blood1818 of the souls5315 of the poor34 innocents:5355 I have not found4672 it by secret search,4290 but on all3605 these.428

34 Also on your hands is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents; I have not found it by hard search, for it is under every tree.

35 Yet you say,559 Because3588 I am innocent,5352 surely389 his anger639 shall turn7725 from me. Behold,2005 I will plead8199 with you, because5921 you say,559 I have not sinned.2398

35 Yet you say, Because I am innocent, therefore he will turn his anger from me. Behold, I will contend with you, because you have said, I have not sinned.

36 Why4100 gad235 you about235 so much3966 to change8138 your way?1870 you also1571 shall be ashamed954 of Egypt,4714 as you were ashamed954 of Assyria.804

36 Why do you gad about so much to change your ways? You shall also be ashamed of Egypt, even as you were ashamed of Assyria.

37 Yes,1571 you shall go3318 forth3318 from him, and your hands3027 on your head:7218 for the LORD3068 has rejected3988 your confidences,4009 and you shall not prosper6743 in them.

37 Yea, you shall go forth from him humiliated; for the LORD is angry against those upon whom you have put your trust, and you shall not prosper with them.
