Розділ 21

1 І присягнув Ізра́їльтянин в Міцпі, говорячи: „Жоден із нас не дасть своєї дочки́ Веніяминові за жінку!“

2 І посхо́дився народ до Бет-Елу, та й сидів там аж до вечора перед Божим лицем. І підне́сли вони го́лос свій, та й плакали плаче́м великим.

3 I сказали вони: „Чому, Господи, Боже Ізраїлів, сталося це між Ізраїлем, щоб сьогодні бракувало з Ізраїля одне пле́м'я?“

4 І сталося назавтра, і встав рано наро́д, та й збудували же́ртівника, і прине́сли цілопа́лення та мирні жертви.

5 І сказали Ізраїлеві сини: „Хто зо всіх Ізраїлевих племен не ввійшов до зборів до Господа? Бо та прися́га була велика на того, хто не прийшов до Господа, до Міцпи, говорячи: „Такий буде конче забитий“.

6 І жалували Ізраїлеві сини за Веніямином, своїм братом, та й сказали: „Сьогодні відру́бане з Ізраїля одне пле́м'я!

7 Що́ ми зробимо їм, позосталим, щодо жіно́к? А ми присягнули Господом, що не дамо їм із дочо́к наших за жіно́к“.

8 І сказали вони: „Яке́ одне́ з Ізраїлевих племен не прийшло́ до Господа до Міцпи?“ Аж ось ви́явилось, що з Явешу ґілеадського ніхто не прихо́див до табо́ру на збори.

9 І був переглянений народ, а оце — не було там нікого з ме́шканців Явешу ґілеадського!

10 І послала громада туди дванадцять тисяч чоловіка хоробрих людей, і наказали їм, говорячи: „Ідіть, і повбиваєте ме́шканців ґілеадського Явешу вістрям меча, — і жінок і дітей.

11 А це та річ, що ви зробите: Кожного чоловіка та кожну жінку, що пізна́ла чолові́ка, зробите закляттям“.

12 І знайшли вони з ме́шканців ґілеадського Явешу чотири сотні дівчат паннів, що не пізна́ли чолові́ка, і спровадили їх до табо́ру в Шіло́, що в ханаанському Кра́ї.

13 І послала вся та громада, а ті говорили до Веніяминових синів, що в Села-Ріммоні, та й кликнули їм: „Мир!“

14 І вернувся Веніямин того ча́су, і дали́ їм тих жінок, яких позоставили при житті, із жінок ґілеадського Явешу. Та не знайшли їм до́сить.

15 А народ той жалував за Веніямином, бо Господь зробив проло́ма в Ізраїлевих племенах.

16 І сказали старші́ громади: „Що́ ми зробимо позосталим щодо жінок? Бо вигублена жінка з Веніямина“.

17 І сказали вони: „Останки насліддя — для Веніямина, і не буде витерте пле́м'я з Ізраїля.

18 А ми не можемо дати їм жінок із наших дочо́к, бо Ізраїлеві сини присягли́, говорячи: „Прокля́тий, хто дає жінку Веніяминові!“

19 І сказали вони: „Ось буває рік-у-рік свято Господнє в Шіло́, що на північ від Бет-Елу, на схід сонця від дороги, що провадить з Бет-Елу до Сихему, і з пі́вдня від Левони“.

20 І наказали вони Веніяминовим синам, говорячи: „Ідіть, і будете чатува́ти в виноградниках.

21 І побачите, аж ось до́чки Шіла́ вийдуть танцювати та́нці, то ви вийдете з виноградників, та й схо́пите собі кожен свою жінку з дочо́к Шіла́, і пі́дете в Веніяминів край.

22 І буде, коли їхні батьки або їхні брати при́йдуть до нас сваритися, то ми скажемо їм: Змилуйтеся над ними, бо не взяли́ ми для кожного з них жінку на війні, і ви не дали́ їм, тому цього ча́су ви винні“.

23 І зробили так Веніяминові сини, і взяли жінок за числом своїм із тих, що танцювали, що їх вони викрали. І пішли вони, і вернулися до наді́лу свого, і побудували міста́, та й осілися в них.

24 І порозхо́дилися звідти Ізраїлеві сини того ча́су кожен до племени свого та до роду свого, і пішли звідти кожен до спа́дку свого.

25 Того ча́су не було царя в Ізраїлі, — кожен робив, що здавалося правдивим в його оча́х!

Chapter 21

1 NOW the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpeh, saying, None of us shall give his daughter in marriage to the Benjamites.

2 And the people came to Beth-el, and abode there till evening before God, and lifted up their voices and wept bitterly;

3 And said, O LORD God of Israel, why has this disaster come to pass in Israel, that there should be today one tribe missing from Israel?

4 And on the morrow the people rose early and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.

5 And the children of Israel said. Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that did not come up in the assembly before the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him who did not come up to Mizpeh before the LORD, saying, He shall surely be put to death.

6 Then the children of Israel were sorry for the Benjamites their brethren, and said, One tribe has disappeared from Israel this day.

7 And they said, What shall we do for those who are left without wives, seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them our daughters to wife?

8 And they said, Which one is there of the tribes of Israel that did not come up to Mizpeh before the LORD? And, behold, there had come none to the camp from the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.

9 For the people were numbered there, and behold, not one man of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead was found there.

10 And the people sent thither twelve thousand of the bravest men, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, including the women and the children.

11 And this is the thing that you must do, You must utterly destroy every male and every woman that has lain with a man.

12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins that had known no man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

13 Then the whole congregation sent messengers to speak to the Benjamites that were in the rock of Rimmon, and to proclaim peace to them.

14 And Benjamin came back at that time, and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead; but there were not enough for them.

15 And the people were sorry for Benjamin, because the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

16 Then the elders of the people said. What shall we do for wives for those that remain, for all the Benjamite women have perished?

17 And they said, The remnant of Benjamin must be spared, that a tribe may not be missing from Israel.

18 Howbeit we cannot give them wives of our daughters; for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he who gives a wife to Benjamin.

19 Then they said. Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway that goes up from Beth-el to Shechem, south of Lebonah.

20 So they commanded the Benjamites, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;

21 And when you shall see the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance with tambourines, then come out of the vineyards and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.

22 And if their parents or their brothers should come to complain before us, we will say to them, Have compassion upon them, because they did not take each man his wife with him in the war; and it is not you who gave them to them, that you should be guilty.

23 And the Benjamites did so, and they took them wives from all of those who played tambourines, whom they caught; and they returned and went to their inheritance, and rebuilt the towns, and dwelt in them.

24 And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.

25 In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did that which seemed right in his own eyes.

1 І присягнув Ізра́їльтянин в Міцпі, говорячи: „Жоден із нас не дасть своєї дочки́ Веніяминові за жінку!“

1 NOW the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpeh, saying, None of us shall give his daughter in marriage to the Benjamites.

2 І посхо́дився народ до Бет-Елу, та й сидів там аж до вечора перед Божим лицем. І підне́сли вони го́лос свій, та й плакали плаче́м великим.

2 And the people came to Beth-el, and abode there till evening before God, and lifted up their voices and wept bitterly;

3 I сказали вони: „Чому, Господи, Боже Ізраїлів, сталося це між Ізраїлем, щоб сьогодні бракувало з Ізраїля одне пле́м'я?“

3 And said, O LORD God of Israel, why has this disaster come to pass in Israel, that there should be today one tribe missing from Israel?

4 І сталося назавтра, і встав рано наро́д, та й збудували же́ртівника, і прине́сли цілопа́лення та мирні жертви.

4 And on the morrow the people rose early and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.

5 І сказали Ізраїлеві сини: „Хто зо всіх Ізраїлевих племен не ввійшов до зборів до Господа? Бо та прися́га була велика на того, хто не прийшов до Господа, до Міцпи, говорячи: „Такий буде конче забитий“.

5 And the children of Israel said. Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that did not come up in the assembly before the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him who did not come up to Mizpeh before the LORD, saying, He shall surely be put to death.

6 І жалували Ізраїлеві сини за Веніямином, своїм братом, та й сказали: „Сьогодні відру́бане з Ізраїля одне пле́м'я!

6 Then the children of Israel were sorry for the Benjamites their brethren, and said, One tribe has disappeared from Israel this day.

7 Що́ ми зробимо їм, позосталим, щодо жіно́к? А ми присягнули Господом, що не дамо їм із дочо́к наших за жіно́к“.

7 And they said, What shall we do for those who are left without wives, seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them our daughters to wife?

8 І сказали вони: „Яке́ одне́ з Ізраїлевих племен не прийшло́ до Господа до Міцпи?“ Аж ось ви́явилось, що з Явешу ґілеадського ніхто не прихо́див до табо́ру на збори.

8 And they said, Which one is there of the tribes of Israel that did not come up to Mizpeh before the LORD? And, behold, there had come none to the camp from the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.

9 І був переглянений народ, а оце — не було там нікого з ме́шканців Явешу ґілеадського!

9 For the people were numbered there, and behold, not one man of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead was found there.

10 І послала громада туди дванадцять тисяч чоловіка хоробрих людей, і наказали їм, говорячи: „Ідіть, і повбиваєте ме́шканців ґілеадського Явешу вістрям меча, — і жінок і дітей.

10 And the people sent thither twelve thousand of the bravest men, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, including the women and the children.

11 А це та річ, що ви зробите: Кожного чоловіка та кожну жінку, що пізна́ла чолові́ка, зробите закляттям“.

11 And this is the thing that you must do, You must utterly destroy every male and every woman that has lain with a man.

12 І знайшли вони з ме́шканців ґілеадського Явешу чотири сотні дівчат паннів, що не пізна́ли чолові́ка, і спровадили їх до табо́ру в Шіло́, що в ханаанському Кра́ї.

12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins that had known no man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

13 І послала вся та громада, а ті говорили до Веніяминових синів, що в Села-Ріммоні, та й кликнули їм: „Мир!“

13 Then the whole congregation sent messengers to speak to the Benjamites that were in the rock of Rimmon, and to proclaim peace to them.

14 І вернувся Веніямин того ча́су, і дали́ їм тих жінок, яких позоставили при житті, із жінок ґілеадського Явешу. Та не знайшли їм до́сить.

14 And Benjamin came back at that time, and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead; but there were not enough for them.

15 А народ той жалував за Веніямином, бо Господь зробив проло́ма в Ізраїлевих племенах.

15 And the people were sorry for Benjamin, because the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

16 І сказали старші́ громади: „Що́ ми зробимо позосталим щодо жінок? Бо вигублена жінка з Веніямина“.

16 Then the elders of the people said. What shall we do for wives for those that remain, for all the Benjamite women have perished?

17 І сказали вони: „Останки насліддя — для Веніямина, і не буде витерте пле́м'я з Ізраїля.

17 And they said, The remnant of Benjamin must be spared, that a tribe may not be missing from Israel.

18 А ми не можемо дати їм жінок із наших дочо́к, бо Ізраїлеві сини присягли́, говорячи: „Прокля́тий, хто дає жінку Веніяминові!“

18 Howbeit we cannot give them wives of our daughters; for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he who gives a wife to Benjamin.

19 І сказали вони: „Ось буває рік-у-рік свято Господнє в Шіло́, що на північ від Бет-Елу, на схід сонця від дороги, що провадить з Бет-Елу до Сихему, і з пі́вдня від Левони“.

19 Then they said. Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway that goes up from Beth-el to Shechem, south of Lebonah.

20 І наказали вони Веніяминовим синам, говорячи: „Ідіть, і будете чатува́ти в виноградниках.

20 So they commanded the Benjamites, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;

21 І побачите, аж ось до́чки Шіла́ вийдуть танцювати та́нці, то ви вийдете з виноградників, та й схо́пите собі кожен свою жінку з дочо́к Шіла́, і пі́дете в Веніяминів край.

21 And when you shall see the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance with tambourines, then come out of the vineyards and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.

22 І буде, коли їхні батьки або їхні брати при́йдуть до нас сваритися, то ми скажемо їм: Змилуйтеся над ними, бо не взяли́ ми для кожного з них жінку на війні, і ви не дали́ їм, тому цього ча́су ви винні“.

22 And if their parents or their brothers should come to complain before us, we will say to them, Have compassion upon them, because they did not take each man his wife with him in the war; and it is not you who gave them to them, that you should be guilty.

23 І зробили так Веніяминові сини, і взяли жінок за числом своїм із тих, що танцювали, що їх вони викрали. І пішли вони, і вернулися до наді́лу свого, і побудували міста́, та й осілися в них.

23 And the Benjamites did so, and they took them wives from all of those who played tambourines, whom they caught; and they returned and went to their inheritance, and rebuilt the towns, and dwelt in them.

24 І порозхо́дилися звідти Ізраїлеві сини того ча́су кожен до племени свого та до роду свого, і пішли звідти кожен до спа́дку свого.

24 And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.

25 Того ча́су не було царя в Ізраїлі, — кожен робив, що здавалося правдивим в його оча́х!

25 In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did that which seemed right in his own eyes.
