1 В это же время, когда число учеников продолжало расти, те из них, кто говорил только по-гречески, стали роптать на местных иудеев, жалуясь на то, что при ежедневной раздаче пищи их вдовы обделялись.

2 Тогда Двенадцать, созвав всех учеников, сказали: «Мы поступим неверно, если, оставив слово Божие, будем заниматься раздачей пищи.

3 Изберите же, братья, из вас семь человек, пользующихся доброй славой, исполненных Духа и мудрости. Им поручим это дело,

4 и тогда мы сможем полностью посвятить себя молитве и проповеди слова Божия».

5 Это предложение было одобрено всем собранием. И они избрали Стефана, человека, исполненного веры и Духа Святого, и вместе с ним Филиппа, Прохора, Никанора, Тимона, Пармена и Николая, прозелита из Антиохии.

6 Их поставили перед апостолами, и те, помолившись, возложили на них руки.

7 Слово Божие распространялось всё шире, число учеников в Иерусалиме быстро росло, и многие из священников приняли веру.

8 Стефан, исполненный благодати Божией и силы, совершал в народе великие чудеса и знамения.

9 Но против него выступили некоторые из синагоги вольноотпущенников (как ее называли), то были иудеи из Кирены и Александрии, а с ними и другие из Киликии и Асии: они стали спорить со Стефаном,

10 однако не могли противостоять дарованной ему Духом Святым мудрости, с которой он говорил.

11 Тогда они подкупили несколько человек, чтобы те заявили: «Мы слышали, как он хулил Моисея и даже Бога».

12 Возбудив против него народ, старейшин и книжников, они набросились на него, схватили и привели в Синедрион.

13 Там они выставили лжесвидетелей, утверждавших: «Этот человек не перестает выступать против [этого] места святого и Закона.

14 И мы слышали, как он говорил, что тот самый Иисус из Назарета разрушит Храм и переменит те обычаи, которые передал нам Моисей».

15 Все сидевшие в Синедрионе не сводили со Стефана глаз, и его лицо казалось им подобным лику ангела.

Chapter 6

1 AND in those days, when the number of disciples had increased, the Hel'len-ist converts murmured against the Hebrew converts because their widows were discriminated against in the daily distribution.

2 So the twelve apostles called the whole multitude of the converts and said to them, It is not good that we should leave the word of God and serve food. *

3 Wherefore, brethren, examine and select from among you seven men of good repute who are full of the Spirit of the LORD and of wisdom, so that we may appoint them to this task.

4 And we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.

5 This suggestion pleased the whole people so they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip and Proch'orus and Ni-ca'nor and Ti'mon and Par'menas and Nic'o-las, a proselyte of An'ti-och.

6 These men stood before the apostles: who, as they prayed, laid their hands on them.

7 And the word of God spread; and the number of the converts in Jerusalem increased greatly; and many people of Jewish faith became converts.

8 Now Stephen was full of grace and power and did great wonders and miracles among the people.

9 Then there arose certain men of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Lib'er-tines, and Cy-re'ni-ans and Al-exan'dri- ans and Ci-li'ci-ans and persons from Asia Minor, and they debated with Stephen.

10 But they were unable to stand up against the wisdom and the spirit by which he spoke.

11 Then they sent men and instructed them to say, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.

12 And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they rose up against him and seized him and brought him into the midst of the council.

13 And they appointed false witnesses who said, This man does not cease to speak against the law and against this holy land:

14 For we have heard him say that Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this country and shall change the customs which Moses entrusted to you.

15 Then all who were seated at the council looked at him and saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

7 Слово Божие распространялось всё шире, число учеников в Иерусалиме быстро росло, и многие из священников приняли веру.

7 And the word of God spread; and the number of the converts in Jerusalem increased greatly; and many people of Jewish faith became converts.

8 Стефан, исполненный благодати Божией и силы, совершал в народе великие чудеса и знамения.

8 Now Stephen was full of grace and power and did great wonders and miracles among the people.

10 однако не могли противостоять дарованной ему Духом Святым мудрости, с которой он говорил.

12 Возбудив против него народ, старейшин и книжников, они набросились на него, схватили и привели в Синедрион.

13 Там они выставили лжесвидетелей, утверждавших: «Этот человек не перестает выступать против [этого] места святого и Закона.
