1 AFTER these things, when the wrath of King Akhshirash was appeased, he remembered Vashti the queen and what she had done and what was decreed against her. |
|
2 Then the king's servants and his ministers said to him, Let there be beautiful young virgins sought for the king; |
|
3 And let the king appoint officers in all the provinces, that they may gather together all the beautiful young virgins to the house of the women, to the custody of Hegai the eunuch, keeper of women; and let their things for purification be given them; |
|
4 And let the maiden who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so. |
|
5 Now there was a certain Jew in Shushan the palace, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite; |
|
6 Who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captivity which had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away. |
|
7 And he brought up Hadassah, that is Esther, his uncle's daughter; for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; and when her father and mother died, Mordecai took her for his own daughter. |
|
8 So when the king's commandment and his decree were heard, and when many virgins were gathered together in Shushan the palace in the custody of Hegai, the eunuch, that Esther was brought also to the king's house to the custody of Hegai, the keeper of the women. |
|
9 And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained favor of him; and he speedily gave her things for purification, such things which were her portion, and seven maidens who were worthy to be given her from the king's house; and he preferred her and her maidens much more than all the other women. |
|
10 Esther had not made known her people nor her kindred; for Mordecai had charged her that she should not make it known. |
|
11 And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women's house to learn how Esther did and what should become of her. |
|
12 Now when the turn of each maiden was come to go in before King Akhshirash, after she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women (for so were the days of their purification accomplished, every six days with oil of myrrh and every six days with spices and with other things for the purifying of the women); |
|
13 Then thus came every maiden before the king; whatever she de sired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women to the king's house. |
|
14 In the evening she went in, and in the morning she returned to the house of the women to the custody of Shangashgeshir the king's eunuch, the keeper of the concubines; she did not come in to the king unless the king delighted in her and she was called by name. |
|
15 Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, came to go in before the king, she asked for nothing but what Hegai the king's eunuch, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favor in the sight of all those who saw her. |
|
16 So Esther entered before King Akhshirash into his royal house in the tenth month, that is, January, in the fourth year of his reign. |
|
17 And the king loved Esther more than all the other women, and she obtained grace and favor in his sight more than all the other virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head and made her queen instead of Vashti. |
|
18 Then the king made a great feast to all his princes, even Esther's feast; and he granted relief to the provinces and gave gifts, according to the generosity of the king. |
|
19 And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, Mordecai was sitting in the king's gate. |
|
20 But Esther had not yet made known her kindred nor her people, as Mordecai had charged her; for Esther obeyed the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was faith fully brought up with him. |
|
21 In those days, while Mordecai was sitting at the king's gate, two of the king's eunuchs, Bigthan and Teresh, of those who kept the door, were wroth and sought to lay hands on King Akhshirash. |
|
22 And the thing became known to Mordecai, who told it to Esther the queen; and Esther told the king in Mordecai's name. |
|
23 And when the matter was investigated and found to be so, they were both nailed on crosses, and it was written in the book of chronicles be fore the king. |

2 І сказали царські о́троки, його слу́ги: „Нехай пошукають для царя дівчат, уродли́вих на ви́гляд панні́в, |

3 і нехай цар призна́чить уря́дників по всіх окру́гах свого царства, і нехай вони зберуть усіх дівчат, панні́в уродли́вого ви́гляду, до за́мку Сузи, до дому жіно́к під руку Геґа́я, царсько́го є́внуха, сто́рожа жіно́к, і дати їм потрібне для їхнього причепу́рення. |

4 А та ді́вчина, що бу́де найкраща в царськи́х оча́х, буде царювати замість Ва́шті“. І була приємна ця рада у царе́вих оча́х, — і він зробив так. |
|
5 А в замку Су́зи був один юде́янин, а ім'я́ йому Мордеха́й, син Яіра, сина Шім'ї, сина Кішового, муж Веніями́нівець, |
|
6 що був узятий з Єрусалиму з тим поло́ном, який був узятий ра́зом з Єхонією, царем Юдиним, якого взяв був Навуходоно́сор, цар вавило́нський. |
|
7 І він вихо́вував Гадассу, вона ж Есте́р, дочку́ свого дя́дька, бо не мала вона ні батька, ні матері. А ця ді́вчина була хорошої поста́ви та вродли́вого ви́гляду, а коли помер її ба́тько та мати її, Мордеха́й узяв її собі за дочку́. |

8 І сталося, коли був оголо́шений царськи́й нака́з та зако́н його́, і коли збирали багато дівча́т до за́мку Су́зи під руку Геґая, то взята була́ й Есте́р до царсько́го дому під руку Геґая, сто́рожа жіно́к. |
|
9 І була́ та ді́вчина хороша в його оча́х, і мала ласку перед ним, і він приспіши́в видати їй потрібне для її причепу́рення й її ча́стки, та дати їй сімо́х відповідних дівча́т із царсько́го дому. І він перемістив її та дівча́т її до найкращого місця в домі жіно́к. |

10 Есте́р не ви́явила ні про наро́д свій, ні про місце свого наро́дження, бо Мордеха́й наказа́в їй, щоб цього вона не виявля́ла. |
|
11 А кожного дня Мордеха́й ходив до подві́р'я дому жіно́к, щоб дові́датись, як мається Есте́р та що́ вона робить. |
|
12 А коли прихо́дила черга́ для кожної ді́вчини вхо́дити до царя Ахашверо́ша, коли кінча́лися дванадцять місяців устано́вленого поря́дку для жіно́к, — бо так виповня́лися дні їхнього причепу́рювання: шість місяців — мирровою оливою, а шість місяців па́хощами та іншим потрібним для причепурювання жіно́к, — |

13 то з тим ді́вчина прихо́дила до царя́: давалося їй усе, що вона скаже, щоб воно йшло з нею з дому жіно́к до дому царсько́го. |
|
14 Ввечорі вона прихо́дила, а ра́нком вона верта́лася до другого дому жіно́к під руку Шаазґаза, царсько́го е́внуха, сто́рожа нало́жниць. Вона вже не вхо́дила до царя, хіба б що цар пожадав її, і вона була покли́кана за ім'я́м. |

17 І цар покоха́в Естер понад усіх жіно́к, і вона мала прихи́льність та ласку перед його обличчям понад усіх дівча́т, — і він поклав царську́ корону на її го́лову, і зробив її цари́цею замість Ва́шті. |
|
18 І спра́вив цар велику гости́ну для всіх своїх князі́в та своїх слуг, гостину для Есте́ри, і зробив поле́гшення для окру́г, і дав дару́нка за царсько́ю спроможністю. |
|
19 А коли збирали дівчат другий раз, то Мордеха́й сидів при царські́й брамі. |
|
20 Есте́р же не виявляла місця свого наро́дження та народу свого, як наказав був їй Мордеха́й, бо Есте́р вико́нувала Мордехаєве слово так, як коли була́ в нього на ви́хованні. |
|
21 Тими днями, коли Мордеха́й сидів у царські́й брамі, розгнівалися Біґтан та Тереш, два царські́ е́внухи зо сторожі́в поро́гів, — і заду́мували простягну́ти руку на царя Ахашверо́ша. |
|

23 І була́ розві́дана ця справа, і зна́йдено так, і ті обоє були́ пові́шені на ши́бениці. І було записане це в хро́ніці перед обличчям царськи́м. |

4 And let the maiden who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so. |
4 А та ді́вчина, що бу́де найкраща в царськи́х оча́х, буде царювати замість Ва́шті“. І була приємна ця рада у царе́вих оча́х, — і він зробив так. |

5 Now there was a certain Jew in Shushan the palace, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite; |

8 So when the king's commandment and his decree were heard, and when many virgins were gathered together in Shushan the palace in the custody of Hegai, the eunuch, that Esther was brought also to the king's house to the custody of Hegai, the keeper of the women. |
8 І сталося, коли був оголо́шений царськи́й нака́з та зако́н його́, і коли збирали багато дівча́т до за́мку Су́зи під руку Геґая, то взята була́ й Есте́р до царсько́го дому під руку Геґая, сто́рожа жіно́к. |

9 And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained favor of him; and he speedily gave her things for purification, such things which were her portion, and seven maidens who were worthy to be given her from the king's house; and he preferred her and her maidens much more than all the other women. |
9 І була́ та ді́вчина хороша в його оча́х, і мала ласку перед ним, і він приспіши́в видати їй потрібне для її причепу́рення й її ча́стки, та дати їй сімо́х відповідних дівча́т із царсько́го дому. І він перемістив її та дівча́т її до найкращого місця в домі жіно́к. |

10 Esther had not made known her people nor her kindred; for Mordecai had charged her that she should not make it known. |
10 Есте́р не ви́явила ні про наро́д свій, ні про місце свого наро́дження, бо Мордеха́й наказа́в їй, щоб цього вона не виявля́ла. |
