Chapter 2

1 AFTER these things, when the wrath of King Akhshirash was appeased, he remembered Vashti the queen and what she had done and what was decreed against her.

2 Then the king's servants and his ministers said to him, Let there be beautiful young virgins sought for the king;

3 And let the king appoint officers in all the provinces, that they may gather together all the beautiful young virgins to the house of the women, to the custody of Hegai the eunuch, keeper of women; and let their things for purification be given them;

4 And let the maiden who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.

5 Now there was a certain Jew in Shushan the palace, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite;

6 Who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captivity which had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.

7 And he brought up Hadassah, that is Esther, his uncle's daughter; for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; and when her father and mother died, Mordecai took her for his own daughter.

8 So when the king's commandment and his decree were heard, and when many virgins were gathered together in Shushan the palace in the custody of Hegai, the eunuch, that Esther was brought also to the king's house to the custody of Hegai, the keeper of the women.

9 And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained favor of him; and he speedily gave her things for purification, such things which were her portion, and seven maidens who were worthy to be given her from the king's house; and he preferred her and her maidens much more than all the other women.

10 Esther had not made known her people nor her kindred; for Mordecai had charged her that she should not make it known.

11 And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women's house to learn how Esther did and what should become of her.

12 Now when the turn of each maiden was come to go in before King Akhshirash, after she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women (for so were the days of their purification accomplished, every six days with oil of myrrh and every six days with spices and with other things for the purifying of the women);

13 Then thus came every maiden before the king; whatever she de sired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women to the king's house.

14 In the evening she went in, and in the morning she returned to the house of the women to the custody of Shangashgeshir the king's eunuch, the keeper of the concubines; she did not come in to the king unless the king delighted in her and she was called by name.

15 Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, came to go in before the king, she asked for nothing but what Hegai the king's eunuch, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favor in the sight of all those who saw her.

16 So Esther entered before King Akhshirash into his royal house in the tenth month, that is, January, in the fourth year of his reign.

17 And the king loved Esther more than all the other women, and she obtained grace and favor in his sight more than all the other virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.

18 Then the king made a great feast to all his princes, even Esther's feast; and he granted relief to the provinces and gave gifts, according to the generosity of the king.

19 And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, Mordecai was sitting in the king's gate.

20 But Esther had not yet made known her kindred nor her people, as Mordecai had charged her; for Esther obeyed the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was faith fully brought up with him.

21 In those days, while Mordecai was sitting at the king's gate, two of the king's eunuchs, Bigthan and Teresh, of those who kept the door, were wroth and sought to lay hands on King Akhshirash.

22 And the thing became known to Mordecai, who told it to Esther the queen; and Esther told the king in Mordecai's name.

23 And when the matter was investigated and found to be so, they were both nailed on crosses, and it was written in the book of chronicles be fore the king.

2 Тогда царские слуги, которые прислуживали ему, предложили: – Пусть для царя поищут красивых молодых девушек.

3 Пусть царь назначит особых людей в каждую из провинций своего царства. И пусть они соберут всех красивых молодых девушек в гарем крепости Сузы, под надзор царского евнуха Егая, который смотрит за женщинами, и пусть им выдают косметические масла для ухода за телом.

4 И пусть девушка, которая понравится царю, станет царицей вместо Астинь. Этот совет понравился царю, и он воспользовался им.

5 В крепости Сузы был иудей из рода Вениамина по имени Мардохей, сын Иаира, сына Шимея, сына Киша,

6 который был уведён в плен из Иерусалима царём Вавилона Навуходоносором, . вместе с теми, кто был пленён с царём Иудеи Иехонией.

7 Мардохей вырастил Гадассу, она же Есфирь, – свою двоюродную сестру, потому что у неё не было ни отца, ни матери. Девушка была пригожа и красива, и когда её отец и мать умерли, Мардохей взял её к себе вместо дочери.

8 После того как царская воля и указ были объявлены во всеуслышание, в крепость Сузы привели и отдали под надзор Егая множество девушек. Есфирь тоже была взята в царский дворец и отдана под надзор Егая, смотрителя гарема.

9 Девушка понравилась ему и приобрела его расположение. Он сразу же выдал ей пропитание и косметические масла для ухода за телом. Он приставил к ней семь служанок, выбранных для неё из царского дворца, и переселил её вместе со служанками в лучшее помещение гарема.

10 Есфирь не рассказывала ни о своём народе, ни о сородичах, потому что Мардохей запретил ей.

11 Мардохей каждый день прогуливался перед двором гарема, чтобы узнать, как поживает Есфирь и что делается с ней.

12 Прежде чем в свой черёд войти к царю Ксерксу, каждая девушка должна была двенадцать месяцев ухаживать за собой, как было предписано женщинам: шесть месяцев с мирровым маслом и шесть месяцев с благовониями и другими средствами.

13 Когда девушка входила к царю, ей давали всё, чего бы она ни захотела взять с собой из гарема в царский дворец.

14 Вечером она уходила туда, а на утро возвращалась в другую часть гарема под надзор Шаашгаза, царского евнуха, который смотрел за наложницами. Она уже не возвращалась к царю, если он не оставался ею доволен и не призывал её по имени.

15 Когда пришёл черёд Есфири, дочери Авихаила, дяди Мардохея, который взял её к себе вместо дочери, она не попросила ничего, кроме того, что посоветовал царский евнух, смотритель гарема Егай. А Есфирь приобрела расположение у всех, кто её видел.

16 Её отвели к царю Ксерксу в его дворец в десятом месяце, в месяце тевете (в начале зимы 479 г. до н. э.), в седьмой год его царствования.

17 Есфирь понравилась царю больше всех прочих женщин, она приобрела его расположение и привязанность больше, чем все остальные девушки. Он возложил ей на голову царский венец и сделал её царицей вместо Астинь.

18 И царь устроил великий пир в честь Есфири для всех своих сановников и знати. Он объявил по всем провинциям праздник и с царской щедростью раздал дары.

19 Когда девушек собирали во второй раз, Мардохей сидел у царских ворот.

20 А Есфирь ничего не говорила о своих родственниках и о народе, как сказал ей Мардохей, потому что она слушалась наставлений Мардохея, как в те времена, когда он её растил.

21 В то время как Мардохей сидел у царских ворот, Бигтан и Тереш, двое царских евнухов, охранявших порог, разгневались и составили заговор, чтобы убить царя Ксеркса.

22 Но Мардохей узнал о заговоре и рассказал царице Есфири, а она рассказала об этом царю от имени Мардохея.

4 And let the maiden who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.

4 И пусть девушка, которая понравится царю, станет царицей вместо Астинь. Этот совет понравился царю, и он воспользовался им.

5 Now there was a certain Jew in Shushan the palace, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite;

8 После того как царская воля и указ были объявлены во всеуслышание, в крепость Сузы привели и отдали под надзор Егая множество девушек. Есфирь тоже была взята в царский дворец и отдана под надзор Егая, смотрителя гарема.

9 And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained favor of him; and he speedily gave her things for purification, such things which were her portion, and seven maidens who were worthy to be given her from the king's house; and he preferred her and her maidens much more than all the other women.

10 Esther had not made known her people nor her kindred; for Mordecai had charged her that she should not make it known.

10 Есфирь не рассказывала ни о своём народе, ни о сородичах, потому что Мардохей запретил ей.

11 And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women's house to learn how Esther did and what should become of her.

19 And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, Mordecai was sitting in the king's gate.

19 Когда девушек собирали во второй раз, Мардохей сидел у царских ворот.

20 But Esther had not yet made known her kindred nor her people, as Mordecai had charged her; for Esther obeyed the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was faith fully brought up with him.
