Chapter 5

1 LET your conduct be seemly when you go to the house of God; and to draw near to hear is better than the gift offerings of fools; for they know not to do that which is good.

2 Be not rash with your mouth, and let not your heart be hasty to utter a word before God; for God is in heaven, and you upon earth; therefore let your words be few.

3 For a dream comes because of the multitude of business; and a fool's voice is known by a multitude of words.

4 When you vow a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it; for he has no pleasure in fools; but as for you, pay that which you have vowed.

5 It is much better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not fulfill it.

6 Suffer not your mouth to cause your flesh to sin; neither say before God that it was an error, lest God be angry at your voice and destroy the work of your hands.

7 For in the multitude of dreams and vain things and many words is false worship; but you should worship God.

8 If you see the oppression of the poor and violent perversion of judgment and justice in a city, do not marvel at the matter; for he who is higher than the highest is watching; and he who is higher is over them.

9 Moreover the riches of the earth are for all; the king, himself, is served by cultivating his own field.

10 He who loves money shall not be satisfied with money; and he who loves wealth shall not retain it. This is also vanity.

11 When goods increase, they also are increased who eat them; and what profit is there to their owners, except the beholding of them with their eyes?

12 Sweet is the sleep of a laboring man, whether he eat little or much; but the abundance of the rich will not let him sleep.

13 There is also another grievous evil which I have seen under the sun, riches kept by the owner thereof to his own hurt.

14 And those riches are lost in a bad venture; for when he begets a son, there is nothing in his hand.

15 As he came forth from his mother's womb, naked shall he return to the earth to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labor, which he may carry away in his hand.

16 And this also is a grievous evil; for just as he came, so shall he go; and what profit has he that has labored for the wind?

17 All his days also he eats in darkness, in much anger and wrath, in mourning and in sickness.

18 This is what I, the Preacher, have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and drink and to enjoy the good of all his labor for which he toils under the sun all the days of his life, which the LORD has given him; for this is his portion.

19 To every man also the LORD has given riches and wealth, and has given power to eat thereof and to take his portion and to rejoice in his labor; this is the gift of God.

20 For he shall remember no more the days of his life; because God will keep him busy with the joy of his heart.

1 Хорошенько подумай, прежде чем дать клятву Богу. Не позволяй своим эмоциям быть причиной спешных обещаний. Помни, что Бог находится на небесах, а ты на земле, поэтому будь немногословен. Такие слова правдивы:

2 От больших волнений бывают плохие сны, и у глупых всегда слов больше, чем нужно.

3 Если ты дал клятву Богу, то сдержи своё обещание, не медли с его исполнением. Бог испытывает неприязнь к глупцам. Отдай то, что ты обещал Богу.

4 Лучше не обещать ничего, чем пообещать и не сделать.

5 И не позволяй твоим словам быть причиной твоих грехов, не говори священнику: «Я не всерьёз это сказал». Если ты сделаешь так, Бог может разгневаться и уничтожить всё, ради чего ты трудился.

6 Не становись причиной собственных бедствий; пусть не мешают тебе чтить Бога бесполезные мечтания и хвастовство.

7 В некоторых странах можно увидеть бедняков, на которых возлагают непосильную работу. Это несправедливо и умаляет их права. Но не удивляйся, ведь над высокопоставленным есть другой высокопоставленный. И есть ещё другой, который стоит над ними обоими.

8 Для любой страны царь, заботящийся о своей земле, — великое благо.

9 Кто любит деньги, никогда не будет довольствоваться тем, что имеет. Кто любит богатство, тот никогда не насытится. И это всё тоже бессмысленно.

10 Чем больше у человека богатства, тем больше он тратит на «друзей», так что богатый на деле ничего не приобретает. Единственное, для чего годится богатство, — это смотреть на него.

11 Кто трудится весь день, тот мирно спит, и неважно, сколько у него еды. Но богатый всё время печётся о своём богатстве и лишается сна.

12 Видел я, как печальные события происходят в жизни: человек копит деньги на будущее,

13 но случается вдруг несчастье и, всё потеряв, он ничего не может дать своим детям.

14 Человек в мир приходит из материнского чрева нагим, и, когда умирает, покидает этот мир нагим. Он много трудится, но, умирая, не может ничего с собою взять.

15 Как же печально, что он покидает мир таким же, как пришёл. Какая польза человеку «пытаться поймать ветер»?

16 Он имеет лишь дни, полные печали и скорби, а в конце очень встревожен и болен.

17 Удостоверился я, что не существует для человека лучшего занятия, чем есть, пить и радоваться тому, что делает он за время своей недолгой земной жизни. Господь ему дал эти недолгие дни и всё, чем он владеет.

18 Если Бог посылает человеку богатство, собственность и власть, чтобы этим всем наслаждаться, то человек должен радоваться этому, он должен принять это всё и радоваться делу своему, потому что этот дар от Бога.

19 Такой человек не размышляет подолгу о днях своей жизни, так как Господь занимает его делами, которые он любит.

1 Хорошенько подумай, прежде чем дать клятву Богу. Не позволяй своим эмоциям быть причиной спешных обещаний. Помни, что Бог находится на небесах, а ты на земле, поэтому будь немногословен. Такие слова правдивы:

5 И не позволяй твоим словам быть причиной твоих грехов, не говори священнику: «Я не всерьёз это сказал». Если ты сделаешь так, Бог может разгневаться и уничтожить всё, ради чего ты трудился.

6 Не становись причиной собственных бедствий; пусть не мешают тебе чтить Бога бесполезные мечтания и хвастовство.

7 For in the multitude of dreams and vain things and many words is false worship; but you should worship God.

7 В некоторых странах можно увидеть бедняков, на которых возлагают непосильную работу. Это несправедливо и умаляет их права. Но не удивляйся, ведь над высокопоставленным есть другой высокопоставленный. И есть ещё другой, который стоит над ними обоими.

8 Для любой страны царь, заботящийся о своей земле, — великое благо.

9 Кто любит деньги, никогда не будет довольствоваться тем, что имеет. Кто любит богатство, тот никогда не насытится. И это всё тоже бессмысленно.

10 He who loves money shall not be satisfied with money; and he who loves wealth shall not retain it. This is also vanity.

10 Чем больше у человека богатства, тем больше он тратит на «друзей», так что богатый на деле ничего не приобретает. Единственное, для чего годится богатство, — это смотреть на него.

11 Кто трудится весь день, тот мирно спит, и неважно, сколько у него еды. Но богатый всё время печётся о своём богатстве и лишается сна.

18 This is what I, the Preacher, have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and drink and to enjoy the good of all his labor for which he toils under the sun all the days of his life, which the LORD has given him; for this is his portion.

18 Если Бог посылает человеку богатство, собственность и власть, чтобы этим всем наслаждаться, то человек должен радоваться этому, он должен принять это всё и радоваться делу своему, потому что этот дар от Бога.

19 To every man also the LORD has given riches and wealth, and has given power to eat thereof and to take his portion and to rejoice in his labor; this is the gift of God.

19 Такой человек не размышляет подолгу о днях своей жизни, так как Господь занимает его делами, которые он любит.

20 For he shall remember no more the days of his life; because God will keep him busy with the joy of his heart.
