Chapter 4

1 And the children1121 of Israel3478 again3254 did6213 evil7451 in the sight5869 of the LORD,3068 when Ehud261 was dead.4191

2 And the LORD3068 sold4376 them into the hand3027 of Jabin2985 king4428 of Canaan,3667 that reigned4427 in Hazor;2674 the captain8269 of whose host6635 was Sisera,5516 which dwelled3427 in Harosheth2800 of the Gentiles.1471

3 And the children1121 of Israel3478 cried6817 to the LORD:3068 for he had nine8672 hundred3967 chariots7393 of iron;1270 and twenty6242 years8141 he mightily2393 oppressed3905 the children1121 of Israel.3478

4 And Deborah,1683 a prophetess,5031 the wife802 of Lapidoth,3941 she judged8199 Israel3478 at that time.6256

5 And she dwelled3427 under8478 the palm8560 tree of Deborah1683 between996 Ramah7414 and Bethel1008 in mount2022 Ephraim:669 and the children1121 of Israel3478 came5927 up to her for judgment.4941

6 And she sent7971 and called7121 Barak1301 the son1121 of Abinoam42 out of Kedeshnaphtali,6943 5321 and said559 to him, Has not the LORD3068 God430 of Israel3478 commanded,6680 saying, Go3212 and draw4900 toward mount2022 Tabor,8396 and take3947 with you ten6235 thousand505 men376 of the children1121 of Naphtali5321 and of the children1121 of Zebulun?2074

7 And I will draw4900 to you to the river5158 Kishon7028 Sisera,5516 the captain8269 of Jabin's2985 army,6635 with his chariots7393 and his multitude;1995 and I will deliver5414 him into your hand.3027

8 And Barak1301 said559 to her, If518 you will go3212 with me, then I will go:1980 but if518 you will not go3212 with me, then I will not go.3212

9 And she said,559 I will surely go3212 with you: notwithstanding657 the journey1870 that you take1980 shall not be for your honor;8597 for the LORD3068 shall sell4376 Sisera5516 into the hand3027 of a woman.802 And Deborah1683 arose,6965 and went3212 with Barak1301 to Kedesh.6943

10 And Barak1301 called2199 Zebulun2074 and Naphtali5321 to Kedesh;6943 and he went5927 up with ten6235 thousand505 men376 at his feet:7272 and Deborah1683 went5927 up with him.

11 Now Heber2268 the Kenite,7014 which was of the children1121 of Hobab2246 the father2859 in law2859 of Moses,4872 had severed6504 himself from the Kenites,7017 and pitched5186 his tent168 to the plain436 of Zaanaim,6815 which834 is by Kedesh.6943

12 And they showed5046 Sisera5516 that Barak1301 the son1121 of Abinoam42 was gone5927 up to mount2022 Tabor.8396

13 And Sisera5516 gathered2199 together all3605 his chariots,7393 even nine8672 hundred3967 chariots7393 of iron,1270 and all3605 the people5971 that were with him, from Harosheth2800 of the Gentiles1471 to the river5158 of Kishon.7028

14 And Deborah1683 said559 to Barak,1301 Up; for this2088 is the day3117 in which834 the LORD3068 has delivered5414 Sisera5516 into your hand:3027 is not the LORD3068 gone3318 out before6440 you? So Barak1301 went3381 down3381 from mount2022 Tabor,8396 and ten6235 thousand505 men376 after310 him.

15 And the LORD3068 discomfited2000 Sisera,5516 and all3605 his chariots,7393 and all3605 his host,4264 with the edge6310 of the sword2719 before6440 Barak;1301 so that Sisera5516 lighted3381 down3381 off5921 his chariot,4818 and fled5127 away on his feet.7272

16 But Barak1301 pursued7291 after310 the chariots,7393 and after310 the host,4264 to Harosheth2800 of the Gentiles:1471 and all3605 the host4264 of Sisera5516 fell5307 on the edge6310 of the sword;2719 and there was not a man left.7604

17 However, Sisera5516 fled5127 away on his feet7272 to the tent168 of Jael3278 the wife802 of Heber2268 the Kenite:7017 for there was peace7965 between996 Jabin2985 the king4428 of Hazor2674 and the house1004 of Heber2268 the Kenite.7017

18 And Jael3278 went3318 out to meet7125 Sisera,5516 and said559 to him, Turn5493 in, my lord,113 turn5493 in to me; fear3372 not. And when he had turned5493 in to her into the tent,168 she covered3680 him with a mantle.8063

19 And he said559 to her, Give me, I pray4994 you, a little4592 water4325 to drink;8248 for I am thirsty.6770 And she opened6605 a bottle4997 of milk,2461 and gave him drink,8248 and covered3680 him.

20 Again he said559 to her, Stand5975 in the door6607 of the tent,168 and it shall be, when518 any man376 does come935 and inquire7592 of you, and say,559 Is there any man376 here?6311 that you shall say,559 No.369

21 Then Jael3278 Heber's2268 wife802 took3947 a nail3489 of the tent,168 and took7760 an hammer4718 in her hand,3027 and went935 softly3814 to him, and smote8628 the nail3489 into his temples,7541 and fastened6795 it into the ground:776 for he was fast asleep7290 and weary.5774 So he died.4191

22 And, behold,2009 as Barak1301 pursued7291 Sisera,5516 Jael3278 came3318 out to meet7125 him, and said559 to him, Come,3212 and I will show7200 you the man376 whom834 you seek.1245 And when he came935 into her tent, behold,2009 Sisera5516 lay5307 dead,4191 and the nail3489 was in his temples.7541

23 So God430 subdued3665 on that day3117 Jabin2985 the king4428 of Canaan3667 before6440 the children1121 of Israel.3478

24 And the hand3027 of the children1121 of Israel3478 prospered,1980 and prevailed7186 against5921 Jabin2985 the king4428 of Canaan,3667 until5704 they had destroyed3772 Jabin2985 king4428 of Canaan.3667

Chapter 4

1 AND the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, after Ehur was dead.

2 And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Nabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor; the general of whose army was Sisera, who dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles.

3 And the children of Israel cried to the LORD; for he had nine hundred chariots of iron, and oppressed the children of Israel for twenty years.

4 And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapithor, judged Israel at that time.

5 And Deborah dwelt under the palm tree between Ramtha and Beth-el on mount Ephraim; and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.

6 And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam from Rakim of Naphtali, and said to him, Has not the LORD God of Israel commanded you, saying, Go and dwell on mount Tabor, and take with you ten thousand men from the children of Naphtali and from the children of Zebulun?

7 And let them come with you to the river Kishon against Sisera, the general of Nabin's army, and against his chariots, and against his forces; and I will deliver him into your hands.

8 And Barak said to her, If you will go with me, then I will go; but if you will not go with me, then I will not go.

9 And she said, I will surely go with you; nevertheless you shall not glory on account of the journey which you are taking; for the LORD shall deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman. And Deborah arose and went with Barak to Rakim.

10 And Barak mobilized Zebulun and Naphtali to Rakim; and ten thousand men went up with him; and Deborah also went up with him.

11 Now Heber the Kenite had left the Kenites, the descendants of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent as far as the oak which is in Zaanaim, which is by Rakim.

12 And they told Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam had gone up to mount Tabor.

13 And Sisera gathered together all of his chariots, nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles as far as the river of Kishon.

14 And Deborah said to Barak, Arise, for this is the day in which the LORD has delivered Sisera into your hands; behold, the LORD is going out before you. So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men with him.

15 And the LORD defeated Sisera and all his chariots and all his army, with the edge of the sword before Barak; so that Sisera alighted from his chariot and fled on foot.

16 But Barak pursued his chariots and his army as far as Harosheth of the Gentiles; and all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; and not a man escaped.

17 However, Sisera fled on foot, and entered the tent of Anael the wife of Heber the Kenite, because there was peace between Nabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.

18 And Anael went out to meet Sisera, and said to him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And he went in to her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug.

19 And he said to her, Give me a little water to drink; for I am thirsty. And she untied the milkskin and gave him a drink and covered him.

20 Again he said to her, Stand at the door of the tent, and if any man does come and ask you, and say, Is there any man here? You shall say to him, No.

21 Then Anael, Heber's wife, got a tent peg, and took a hammer in her hand and went to him as he was sleeping, and drove the peg into his temples, and pounded it into the ground while he was fast asleep, and he shivered and died.

22 And, behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Anael went out to meet him and said to him, Come, and I will show you the man whom you seek. And he went into her tent, and, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the peg was through his temples.

23 So on that day God defeated Nabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel.

24 And the hand of the children of Israel prospered and prevailed against Nabin the king of Canaan until they slew Nabin king of Canaan.

20 Again he said to her, Stand at the door of the tent, and if any man does come and ask you, and say, Is there any man here? You shall say to him, No.
