Chapter 46

1 The word1697 of the LORD3068 which834 came1961 to Jeremiah3414 the prophet5030 against5921 the Gentiles;1471

2 Against Egypt,4714 against5921 the army2428 of Pharaohnecho6549 king4428 of Egypt,4714 which834 was by the river5104 Euphrates6578 in Carchemish,3751 which834 Nebuchadrezzar5019 king4428 of Babylon894 smote5221 in the fourth7243 year8141 of Jehoiakim3079 the son1121 of Josiah2977 king4428 of Judah.3063

3 Order6186 you the buckler4043 and shield,6793 and draw near5066 to battle.4421

4 Harness631 the horses;5483 and get5927 up, you horsemen,6571 and stand3320 forth with your helmets;3553 furbish4838 the spears,7420 and put3847 on the brigandines.5630

5 Why4069 have I seen7200 them dismayed2844 and turned5472 away back?268 and their mighty1368 ones are beaten3807 down, and are fled5127 apace, and look6437 not back:3437 for fear4032 was round5439 about, said5002 the LORD.3068

6 Let not the swift7031 flee5127 away, nor408 the mighty1368 man escape;4422 they shall stumble,3782 and fall5307 toward the north6828 by the river5104 Euphrates.6578

7 Who4310 is this2088 that comes5927 up as a flood,2975 whose waters4325 are moved1607 as the rivers?5104

8 Egypt4714 rises5927 up like a flood,2975 and his waters4325 are moved1607 like the rivers;5104 and he said,559 I will go5927 up, and will cover3680 the earth;776 I will destroy6 the city5892 and the inhabitants3427 thereof.

9 Come5927 up, you horses;5483 and rage,1984 you chariots;7393 and let the mighty1368 men come3318 forth;3318 the Ethiopians3569 and the Libyans,6316 that handle8610 the shield;4043 and the Lydians,3866 that handle8610 and bend1869 the bow.7198

10 For this1931 is the day3117 of the Lord136 GOD3069 of hosts,6635 a day3117 of vengeance,5360 that he may avenge5358 him of his adversaries:6862 and the sword2719 shall devour,398 and it shall be satiate7646 and made drunk7301 with their blood:1818 for the Lord136 GOD3069 of hosts6635 has a sacrifice2077 in the north6828 country776 by the river5104 Euphrates.6578

11 Go5927 up into Gilead,1568 and take3947 balm,6875 O virgin,1330 the daughter1323 of Egypt:4714 in vain7723 shall you use many7235 medicines;7499 for you shall not be cured.8585

12 The nations1471 have heard8085 of your shame,7036 and your cry6682 has filled4390 the land:776 for the mighty1368 man has stumbled3782 against the mighty,1368 and they are fallen5307 both8147 together.3162

13 The word1697 that the LORD3068 spoke1696 to Jeremiah3414 the prophet,5030 how Nebuchadrezzar5019 king4428 of Babylon894 should come935 and smite5221 the land776 of Egypt.4714

14 Declare5046 you in Egypt,4714 and publish8085 in Migdol,4024 and publish8085 in Noph5297 and in Tahpanhes:8471 say559 you, Stand3320 fast, and prepare3559 you; for the sword2719 shall devour398 round5439 about you.

15 Why4069 are your valiant47 men swept5502 away? they stood5975 not, because3588 the LORD3068 did drive1920 them.

16 He made many7235 to fall,3782 yes, one376 fell5307 on another:7453 and they said,559 Arise,6965 and let us go7725 again7725 to our own people,5971 and to the land776 of our nativity,4138 from the oppressing3238 sword.2719

17 They did cry7121 there,8033 Pharaoh6547 king4428 of Egypt4714 is but a noise;7588 he has passed5674 the time appointed.4150

18 As I live,2416 said5002 the King,4428 whose name8034 is the LORD3068 of hosts,6635 Surely3588 as Tabor8396 is among the mountains,2022 and as Carmel3760 by the sea,3220 so shall he come.935

19 O you daughter1323 dwelling3427 in Egypt,4714 furnish6213 3627 yourself to go into captivity:1473 for Noph5297 shall be waste8047 and desolate3341 without369 an inhabitant.3427

20 Egypt4714 is like a very3304 fair3304 heifer,5697 but destruction7171 comes;935 it comes935 out of the north.6828

21 Also1571 her hired7916 men are in the middle7130 of her like fatted4770 bullocks;5695 for they also1571 are turned6437 back,3437 and are fled5127 away together:3162 they did not stand,5975 because3588 the day3117 of their calamity343 was come935 on them, and the time6256 of their visitation.6486

22 The voice6963 thereof shall go3212 like a serpent;5175 for they shall march3212 with an army,2428 and come935 against her with axes,7134 as hewers2404 of wood.6086

23 They shall cut3772 down her forest,3293 said5002 the LORD,3068 though3588 it cannot3808 be searched;2713 because3588 they are more7231 than the grasshoppers,697 and are innumerable.369 4557

24 The daughter1323 of Egypt4714 shall be confounded;3001 she shall be delivered5414 into the hand3027 of the people5971 of the north.6828

25 The LORD3068 of hosts,6635 the God430 of Israel,3478 said;559 Behold,2005 I will punish6485 the multitude527 of No,4996 and Pharaoh,6547 and Egypt,4714 with their gods,430 and their kings;4428 even Pharaoh,6547 and all them that trust982 in him:

26 And I will deliver5414 them into the hand3027 of those that seek1245 their lives,5315 and into the hand3027 of Nebuchadrezzar5019 king4428 of Babylon,894 and into the hand3027 of his servants:5650 and afterward310 3651 it shall be inhabited,7931 as in the days3117 of old,6924 said5002 the LORD.3068

27 But fear3372 not you, O my servant5650 Jacob,3290 and be not dismayed,2865 O Israel:3478 for, behold,2005 I will save3467 you from afar7350 off, and your seed2233 from the land776 of their captivity;7633 and Jacob3290 shall return,7725 and be in rest8252 and at ease,7599 and none369 shall make him afraid.2729

28 Fear3372 you not, O Jacob3290 my servant,5650 said5002 the LORD:3068 for I am with you; for I will make6213 a full end3615 of all3605 the nations1471 where834 8033 I have driven5080 you: but I will not make6213 a full end3615 of you, but correct3256 you in measure;4941 yet will I not leave you wholly5352 unpunished.5352

Chapter 46

1 THE word of the LORD which came to Jeremiah the prophet to prophesy concerning the Gentiles:

2 Concerning Egypt, concerning the army of Pharaoh the Lame, king of Egypt, which was encamped by the river Euphrates at Carchemish, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon slew in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, saying,

3 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Take up the buckler and shield and draw near to battle.

4 Harness the horses and mount, O you horsemen; put on your helmets; polish the spears and wear the breastplates.

5 Because I have seen them defeated and retreating, and their mighty men are beaten down and are fled apace, and they look not back: for they were surrounded, says the LORD.

6 The swift cannot flee away, nor the mighty man escape; they have all stumbled and fallen by the river Euphrates.

7 Who is this that comes up like a river, and like rivers whose waters are raging?

8 The king of Egypt is rising up like a river, and his waters surge like the rivers; and he says, I will go up, and I will cover the earth; I will destroy the city and the inhabitants thereof.

9 Mount the horses, O you horsemen; sing, O you riders in the chariots; and let the mighty men come forth; the Ethiopians and the Putians, that handle the shield; and the Lydians, who are skilled in handling and bending the bow.

10 And let that day be the day of the LORD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge himself of his enemies; and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiated and made drunk with their blood: for the LORD of hosts shall bring slaughter in the north country by the river Euphrates.

11 Go up to Gilead and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt! In vain you shall use many medicines; for you shall not be healed.

12 The nations have heard of your shame, and your wailing has filled the land; for soldier has stumbled against soldier, and they are fallen both together by the sword.

13 The word that the LORD spoke to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to smite the land of Egypt.

14 Declare it in Egypt and publish it in Migdol and announce it in Memphis and in Tahpanhes. Say, Make ready and prepare yourselves; for the sword shall devour round about you.

15 Why are your valiant men defeated? They fell down and rose up no more because the LORD has overthrown them.

16 Multitudes of them are fallen; yea, one fell upon another and said, Arise, and let us go back to our own people and to the land of our nativity, from the oppressing sword.

17 They did invoke there the name of Pharaoh the Lame, king of Egypt, the troublemaker and passer of time.

18 As I live, says the LORD, whose name is the King of hosts, surely Pharaoh shall fall like a mountain slide, and like Carmel when it slides into the sea.

19 Furnish yourself with the clothes for exile, O virgin daughter of Egypt; for Memphis shall become waste and desolate without an inhabitant.

20 Egypt is like a very fair and pampered heifer, but an army from the north has come against her.

21 Also her hired men in the midst of her are like fatted bullocks; for they have turned back and fled together; they did not stand, because the day of their defeat was come upon them and the time of their punishment.

22 The sound of the army is like that of a serpent when it creeps; for they shall march with an army and come against her with axes, like hewers of trees.

23 Cut down her forests, says the LORD, for they are limitless; they are more than the locusts, and are innumerable.

24 The daughter of Egypt has been put to shame; she is delivered into the hand of the people of the north.

25 The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says, Behold, I will punish Arnon of the waters of Thebes and Pharaoh and Egypt and her gods and her army and her kings, and even Pharaoh and all those who trust in him;

26 And I will deliver them into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their lives and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of his servants; and afterward Egypt shall regain her freedom, as in the days of old, says the LORD.

27 But fear not, O my servant Jacob, and be not dismayed, O Israel; for, behold, I will save you from afar off, and your descendants from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return and be in rest and at ease, and none shall harm him.

28 Fear not, O Jacob my servant, says the LORD, for I am with you; for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven you; but I will not make a full end of you, for I will correct you justly; but I will not wholly declare you blameless.
