Розділ 11

1 Був же хворий один, Ла́зар у Віфа́нії, із села Марії й сестри її Марти.

2 А Марія, що брат її Лазар був хворий, була та, що помазала Господа миром, і воло́ссям своїм Йому но́ги обте́рла.

3 Тоді се́стри послали до Нього, говорячи: „Ось незду́жає, Господи, той, що любиш його!“

4 Як почув же Ісус, то промовив: „Не на смерть ця недуга, а на Божу славу, — щоб Син Божий прославився нею“.

5 А Ісус любив Марту, і сестру її, і Лазаря.

6 А коли Він почув, що нездужає той, то зостався два дні на тім місці, де був.

7 Після ж того говорить до учнів: „Ходімо зно́ву в Юдею“.

8 Йому учні сказали: „Учителю, таж допі́ру юдеї хотіли камінням побити Тебе, а Ти знов туди пі́деш?“

9 Ісус відповів: „Хіба дня не дванадцять годин? Як хто ходить за дня, не спіткне́ться, — цьогосвітнє бо світло він бачить.

10 А хто ходить нічно́ї пори, той спіткнеться, — бо немає в нім світла“.

11 Оце Він сказав, а по то́му говорить до них: „Друг наш Лазар заснув, — та піду́ розбудити Його“.

12 А учні сказали Йому: „Як заснув, то він, Господи, ви́дужає“.

13 Та про смерть його мовив Ісус, вони ж ду́мали, що про сонний спочи́нок Він каже.

14 Тоді просто сказав їм Ісус: „Умер Лазар.

15 І Я тішусь за вас, що там Я не був, щоб повірили ви. Та ходімо до нього“.

16 Сказав же Хома, називаний Близню́к, до співучнів: „Ходімо й ми, щоб із Ним повмирати“.

17 Як прибув же Ісус, то знайшов, що чотири вже дні той у гро́бі.

18 А Віфа́нія поблизу Єрусалиму була́, яких стадій з п'ятнадцять.

19 І багато з юдеїв до Марти й Марії прийшли, щоб за брата розва́жити їх.

20 Тоді Марта, почувши, що надхо́дить Ісус, побігла зустріти Його, Марія ж удома сиділа.

21 І Марта сказала Ісусові: „Коли б, Господи, був Ти отут, — то не вмер би мій брат.

22 Та й тепер, — знаю я, — що чого тільки в Бога попросиш, то дасть Тобі Бог!“

23 Промовляє до неї Ісус: „Воскресне твій брат!“

24 Відказує Марта Йому: „Знаю, що в воскресіння останнього дня він воскресне“.

25 Промовив до неї Ісус: „Я воскресіння й життя. Хто вірує в мене, — хоч і вмре, буде жити.

26 І кожен, хто живе та хто вірує в Мене, — повіки не вмре. Чи ти віруєш в це?“

27 Вона каже Йому: „Так, Господи! Я вірую, що Ти Христос, Син Божий, що має прийти на цей світ“.

28 І промовивши це, відійшла, та й покликала нишком Марі́ю, сестру свою, ка́жучи: „Учитель тут, і Він кличе тебе!“

29 А та, як зачула, квапли́во встала й до Нього пішла.

30 А Ісус не ввійшов був іще до села, а знахо́дивсь на місці, де Марта зустріла Його.

31 Юдеї тоді, що були з нею в домі й її розважали, як побачили, що Марія квапли́во встала й побігла, подали́ся за нею, гадаючи, що до гро́бу пішла вона, — плакати там.

32 Як Марія ж прийшла туди, де був Ісус, і Його вгледіла, то припала до ніг Йому та й говорила до Нього: „Коли б, Господи, був Ти отут, то не вмер би мій брат!“

33 А Ісус, як побачив, що плаче вона, і плачуть юдеї, що з нею прийшли, то в дусі розжа́лобився та й звору́шився Сам,

34 і сказав: „Де його ви поклали?“ Говорять Йому́: „Іди, Господи, та подивися!“

35 I заплакав Ісус.

36 А юдеї казали: „Дивись, як любив Він його!“

37 А з них дехто сказали: „Чи не міг же зробити Отой, Хто очі сліпому відкрив, щоб і цей не помер?“

38 Ісус же розжа́лобивсь знову в Собі, і до гро́бу прийшов. Була ж то печера, і камінь на ній наляга́в.

39 Промовляє Ісус: „Відваліть цього каменя!“ Сестра вмерлого Марта говорить до Нього: „Уже, Господи, чути, — бо чотири вже дні він у гро́бі“.

40 Ісус каже до неї: „Чи тобі не казав Я, що як бу́деш ти вірувати, — славу Божу побачиш?“

41 І зняли́ тоді каменя. А Ісус ізвів очі до неба й промовив: „Отче, дяку прино́шу Тобі, що Мене Ти почув.

42 Та Я знаю, що Ти за́вжди почуєш Мене, але ради наро́ду, що довкола стоїть, Я сказав, щоб увірували, що послав Ти Мене“.

43 І, промовивши це, Він скричав гучни́м голосом: „Ла́зарю, — вийди сюди!“

44 І вийшов померлий, по рука́х і нога́х обв'я́заний па́сами, а обличчя у нього було́ перев'я́зане хусткою. Ісус каже до них: „Розв'яжіть його та й пустіть, щоб ходив“.

45 І багато з юдеїв, що посхо́дилися до Марії, та бачили те, що Він учинив, у Нього ввірували.

46 А деякі з них пішли до фарисеїв, і їм розповіли, що́ Ісус учинив.

47 Тоді первосвященики та фарисеї скли́кали раду й казали: „Що́ маємо робити, бо Цей Чоловік пребагато чуд чинить?

48 Якщо так позоставимо Його, то всі в Нього ввірують, — і при́йдуть римля́ни, та й ві́зьмуть нам і край, і наро́д!“

49 А один із них, Кайя́фа, що був первосвящеником року того́, промовив до них: „Ви нічо́го не знаєте,

50 і не поміркуєте, що краще для вас, щоб один чоловік прийняв смерть за людей, аніж щоб увесь наро́д мав загинути!“

51 А того не сказав сам від себе, але, первосвящеником бувши в тім році, пророкував, що Ісус за наро́д мав умерти,

52 і не лише за наро́д, але й щоб сполучити в одне́ розпоро́шених Божих дітей.

53 Отож, від того дня вони змо́вилися, щоб убити Його.

54 І тому́ не ходив більш Ісус між юдеями явно, але звідти вдавсь до околиць поближче пустині, до міста, що зветься Єфре́м, — і тут залишався з Своїми учнями.

55 Наближалася ж Пасха юдейська, і багато-хто з кра́ю вдались перед Пасхою в Єрусалим, щоб очи́стити себе.

56 І шукали Ісуса вони, а в храмі стоявши, гомоніли один до одно́го: „А як вам здається? Хіба Він не при́йде на свято?“

57 А первосвященики та фарисеї нака́за дали́: як дізнається хто, де Він перебува́тиме, нехай донесе, — щоб схопи́ти Його.

Chapter 11

1 NOW there was a man who was sick, Lazarus of the town of Bethany, the brother of Mary and Martha.

2 This is the Mary who anointed the feet of Jesus with perfume and wiped them with her hair. Lazarus who was sick, was her brother.

3 His two sisters therefore sent to Jesus, saying, Our Lord, behold, the one whom you love is sick.

4 Jesus said, This is not a sickness of death, but for the sake of the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified on his account.

5 Now Jesus loved Martha and Mary and Lazarus.

6 When he heard he was sick, he remained two days in the place where he was.

7 After that he said to his disciples, Come, let us go again to Judaea.

8 His disciples said to him, Teacher, not long ago the Jews wanted to stone you, and yet are you going there again?

9 Jesus said to them, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walks by day time, he will not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

10 But if a man travels at night time, he will stumble, because there is no light in it.

11 Jesus said these things; and after that he said to them, Our friend Lazarus is asleep; but I am going to awake him.

12 His disciples said to him, Our Lord, if he is sleeping, he will get well.

13 But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that what he said was sleeping in bed.

14 Then Jesus said to them, plainly, Lazarus is dead.

15 And I am glad I was not there, for your sakes, so that you may believe; but let us walk there.

16 Then Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, Let us also go, and die with him.

17 So Jesus came to Bethany, and he found that he had been four days in the tomb.

18 Now Bethany was towards Jerusalem, a distance of about two miles.

19 And many Jews kept coming to Martha and Mary, to comfort their hearts concerning their brother.

20 When Martha heard that Jesus had come, she went out to meet him; but Mary sat in the house.

21 Then Martha said to Jesus, My Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

22 But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, he will give you.

23 Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise up.

24 Martha said to him, I know he will rise up in the resurrection at the last day.

25 Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, even though he die, he shall live.

26 And whoever is alive and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?

27 She said to him, Yes, my Lord; I do believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come to the world.

28 And when she had said these things, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, and said to her, Our teacher has come, and he is calling you.

29 When Mary heard it, she rose up quickly and came to him.

30 Jesus had not yet come into the town, but he was still at the same place where Martha met him.

31 The Jews also who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary rise up quickly and go out, followed her, for they thought she was going to the tomb to weep.

32 When Mary came where Jesus was, and saw him, she threw herself at his feet, and said to him, My Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping, who had come with her, he was moved in his spirit, and was greatly disturbed.

34 And he said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Our Lord, come and see.

35 And Jesus was in tears.

36 The Jews then said, Look, how much he loved him!

37 Some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of that blind man, have also kept this man from dying?

38 As Jesus was disturbed in himself because of them, he came to the tomb. That tomb was a cave, and a stone was placed at the entrance.

39 Jesus said, Take away this stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, My Lord, he is already disfigured, for he is dead four days.

40 Jesus said to her, Did not I say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?

41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, O Father, I thank you for you have heard me,

42 And I know that you always hear me; but I say these things just because of this people who stand around, so that they may believe that you have sent me.

43 And when he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come outside.

44 And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with burial clothes; and his face bound with a burial napkin. Jesus said to them, Loose him and let him go.

45 Many of the Jews who had come to Mary, when they saw what Jesus had done, believed in him.

46 And some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them everything Jesus had done.

47 So the high priests and the Pharisees gathered together and said, What shall we do? for this man does many miracles?

48 If we allow him to continue like this, all men will believe in him; and the Romans will come and take over both our country and our people.

49 But one of them, called Caiaphas, who was the high priest for that year, said to them, You know nothing;

50 Nor do you reason that it is much better for us that one man should die instead of the people, and not all the people perish.

51 He did not say this of himself; but because he was the high priest for that year, he prophesied that Jesus had to die for the sake of the people;

52 And not only for the sake of the people, but also to gather together the children of God who are scattered abroad.

53 And from that very day, they decided to kill him.

54 Jesus therefore did not walk openly among the Jews, but went away thence to a place which is close to the wilderness, in the province of Ephraim; and he remained there with his disciples.

55 Now the Jewish passover was at hand; and many went up from the towns to Jerusalem, before the feast, to purify themselves.

56 And they were looking for Jesus, and at the temple they kept saying to one another, What do you think, will he not come to the feast?

57 But the high priests and the Pharisees had already commanded, that if any man should know where he is, to let them know, so that they might seize him.

1 Був же хворий один, Ла́зар у Віфа́нії, із села Марії й сестри її Марти.	1 NOW there was a man who was sick, Lazarus of the town of Bethany, the brother of Mary and Martha.
2 А Марія, що брат її Лазар був хворий, була та, що помазала Господа миром, і воло́ссям своїм Йому но́ги обте́рла.	2 This is the Mary who anointed the feet of Jesus with perfume and wiped them with her hair. Lazarus who was sick, was her brother.
3 Тоді се́стри послали до Нього, говорячи: „Ось незду́жає, Господи, той, що любиш його!“	3 His two sisters therefore sent to Jesus, saying, Our Lord, behold, the one whom you love is sick.
4 Як почув же Ісус, то промовив: „Не на смерть ця недуга, а на Божу славу, — щоб Син Божий прославився нею“.	4 Jesus said, This is not a sickness of death, but for the sake of the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified on his account.
5 А Ісус любив Марту, і сестру її, і Лазаря.	5 Now Jesus loved Martha and Mary and Lazarus.
6 А коли Він почув, що нездужає той, то зостався два дні на тім місці, де був.	6 When he heard he was sick, he remained two days in the place where he was.
7 Після ж того говорить до учнів: „Ходімо зно́ву в Юдею“.	7 After that he said to his disciples, Come, let us go again to Judaea.
8 Йому учні сказали: „Учителю, таж допі́ру юдеї хотіли камінням побити Тебе, а Ти знов туди пі́деш?“	8 His disciples said to him, Teacher, not long ago the Jews wanted to stone you, and yet are you going there again?
9 Ісус відповів: „Хіба дня не дванадцять годин? Як хто ходить за дня, не спіткне́ться, — цьогосвітнє бо світло він бачить.	9 Jesus said to them, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walks by day time, he will not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
10 А хто ходить нічно́ї пори, той спіткнеться, — бо немає в нім світла“.	10 But if a man travels at night time, he will stumble, because there is no light in it.
11 Оце Він сказав, а по то́му говорить до них: „Друг наш Лазар заснув, — та піду́ розбудити Його“.	11 Jesus said these things; and after that he said to them, Our friend Lazarus is asleep; but I am going to awake him.
12 А учні сказали Йому: „Як заснув, то він, Господи, ви́дужає“.	12 His disciples said to him, Our Lord, if he is sleeping, he will get well.
13 Та про смерть його мовив Ісус, вони ж ду́мали, що про сонний спочи́нок Він каже.	13 But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that what he said was sleeping in bed.
14 Тоді просто сказав їм Ісус: „Умер Лазар.	14 Then Jesus said to them, plainly, Lazarus is dead.
15 І Я тішусь за вас, що там Я не був, щоб повірили ви. Та ходімо до нього“.	15 And I am glad I was not there, for your sakes, so that you may believe; but let us walk there.
16 Сказав же Хома, називаний Близню́к, до співучнів: „Ходімо й ми, щоб із Ним повмирати“.	16 Then Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, Let us also go, and die with him.
17 Як прибув же Ісус, то знайшов, що чотири вже дні той у гро́бі.	17 So Jesus came to Bethany, and he found that he had been four days in the tomb.
18 А Віфа́нія поблизу Єрусалиму була́, яких стадій з п'ятнадцять.	18 Now Bethany was towards Jerusalem, a distance of about two miles.
19 І багато з юдеїв до Марти й Марії прийшли, щоб за брата розва́жити їх.	19 And many Jews kept coming to Martha and Mary, to comfort their hearts concerning their brother.
20 Тоді Марта, почувши, що надхо́дить Ісус, побігла зустріти Його, Марія ж удома сиділа.	20 When Martha heard that Jesus had come, she went out to meet him; but Mary sat in the house.
21 І Марта сказала Ісусові: „Коли б, Господи, був Ти отут, — то не вмер би мій брат.	21 Then Martha said to Jesus, My Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
22 Та й тепер, — знаю я, — що чого тільки в Бога попросиш, то дасть Тобі Бог!“	22 But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, he will give you.
23 Промовляє до неї Ісус: „Воскресне твій брат!“	23 Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise up.
24 Відказує Марта Йому: „Знаю, що в воскресіння останнього дня він воскресне“.	24 Martha said to him, I know he will rise up in the resurrection at the last day.
25 Промовив до неї Ісус: „Я воскресіння й життя. Хто вірує в мене, — хоч і вмре, буде жити.	25 Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, even though he die, he shall live.
26 І кожен, хто живе та хто вірує в Мене, — повіки не вмре. Чи ти віруєш в це?“	26 And whoever is alive and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?
27 Вона каже Йому: „Так, Господи! Я вірую, що Ти Христос, Син Божий, що має прийти на цей світ“.	27 She said to him, Yes, my Lord; I do believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come to the world.
28 І промовивши це, відійшла, та й покликала нишком Марі́ю, сестру свою, ка́жучи: „Учитель тут, і Він кличе тебе!“	28 And when she had said these things, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, and said to her, Our teacher has come, and he is calling you.
29 А та, як зачула, квапли́во встала й до Нього пішла.	29 When Mary heard it, she rose up quickly and came to him.
30 А Ісус не ввійшов був іще до села, а знахо́дивсь на місці, де Марта зустріла Його.	30 Jesus had not yet come into the town, but he was still at the same place where Martha met him.
31 Юдеї тоді, що були з нею в домі й її розважали, як побачили, що Марія квапли́во встала й побігла, подали́ся за нею, гадаючи, що до гро́бу пішла вона, — плакати там.	31 The Jews also who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary rise up quickly and go out, followed her, for they thought she was going to the tomb to weep.
32 Як Марія ж прийшла туди, де був Ісус, і Його вгледіла, то припала до ніг Йому та й говорила до Нього: „Коли б, Господи, був Ти отут, то не вмер би мій брат!“	32 When Mary came where Jesus was, and saw him, she threw herself at his feet, and said to him, My Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
33 А Ісус, як побачив, що плаче вона, і плачуть юдеї, що з нею прийшли, то в дусі розжа́лобився та й звору́шився Сам,	33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping, who had come with her, he was moved in his spirit, and was greatly disturbed.
34 і сказав: „Де його ви поклали?“ Говорять Йому́: „Іди, Господи, та подивися!“	34 And he said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Our Lord, come and see.
35 I заплакав Ісус.	35 And Jesus was in tears.
36 А юдеї казали: „Дивись, як любив Він його!“	36 The Jews then said, Look, how much he loved him!
37 А з них дехто сказали: „Чи не міг же зробити Отой, Хто очі сліпому відкрив, щоб і цей не помер?“	37 Some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of that blind man, have also kept this man from dying?
38 Ісус же розжа́лобивсь знову в Собі, і до гро́бу прийшов. Була ж то печера, і камінь на ній наляга́в.	38 As Jesus was disturbed in himself because of them, he came to the tomb. That tomb was a cave, and a stone was placed at the entrance.
39 Промовляє Ісус: „Відваліть цього каменя!“ Сестра вмерлого Марта говорить до Нього: „Уже, Господи, чути, — бо чотири вже дні він у гро́бі“.	39 Jesus said, Take away this stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, My Lord, he is already disfigured, for he is dead four days.
40 Ісус каже до неї: „Чи тобі не казав Я, що як бу́деш ти вірувати, — славу Божу побачиш?“	40 Jesus said to her, Did not I say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?
41 І зняли́ тоді каменя. А Ісус ізвів очі до неба й промовив: „Отче, дяку прино́шу Тобі, що Мене Ти почув.	41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, O Father, I thank you for you have heard me,
42 Та Я знаю, що Ти за́вжди почуєш Мене, але ради наро́ду, що довкола стоїть, Я сказав, щоб увірували, що послав Ти Мене“.	42 And I know that you always hear me; but I say these things just because of this people who stand around, so that they may believe that you have sent me.
43 І, промовивши це, Він скричав гучни́м голосом: „Ла́зарю, — вийди сюди!“	43 And when he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come outside.
44 І вийшов померлий, по рука́х і нога́х обв'я́заний па́сами, а обличчя у нього було́ перев'я́зане хусткою. Ісус каже до них: „Розв'яжіть його та й пустіть, щоб ходив“.	44 And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with burial clothes; and his face bound with a burial napkin. Jesus said to them, Loose him and let him go.
45 І багато з юдеїв, що посхо́дилися до Марії, та бачили те, що Він учинив, у Нього ввірували.	45 Many of the Jews who had come to Mary, when they saw what Jesus had done, believed in him.
46 А деякі з них пішли до фарисеїв, і їм розповіли, що́ Ісус учинив.	46 And some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them everything Jesus had done.
47 Тоді первосвященики та фарисеї скли́кали раду й казали: „Що́ маємо робити, бо Цей Чоловік пребагато чуд чинить?	47 So the high priests and the Pharisees gathered together and said, What shall we do? for this man does many miracles?
48 Якщо так позоставимо Його, то всі в Нього ввірують, — і при́йдуть римля́ни, та й ві́зьмуть нам і край, і наро́д!“	48 If we allow him to continue like this, all men will believe in him; and the Romans will come and take over both our country and our people.
49 А один із них, Кайя́фа, що був первосвящеником року того́, промовив до них: „Ви нічо́го не знаєте,	49 But one of them, called Caiaphas, who was the high priest for that year, said to them, You know nothing;
50 і не поміркуєте, що краще для вас, щоб один чоловік прийняв смерть за людей, аніж щоб увесь наро́д мав загинути!“	50 Nor do you reason that it is much better for us that one man should die instead of the people, and not all the people perish.
51 А того не сказав сам від себе, але, первосвящеником бувши в тім році, пророкував, що Ісус за наро́д мав умерти,	51 He did not say this of himself; but because he was the high priest for that year, he prophesied that Jesus had to die for the sake of the people;
52 і не лише за наро́д, але й щоб сполучити в одне́ розпоро́шених Божих дітей.	52 And not only for the sake of the people, but also to gather together the children of God who are scattered abroad.
53 Отож, від того дня вони змо́вилися, щоб убити Його.	53 And from that very day, they decided to kill him.
54 І тому́ не ходив більш Ісус між юдеями явно, але звідти вдавсь до околиць поближче пустині, до міста, що зветься Єфре́м, — і тут залишався з Своїми учнями.	54 Jesus therefore did not walk openly among the Jews, but went away thence to a place which is close to the wilderness, in the province of Ephraim; and he remained there with his disciples.
55 Наближалася ж Пасха юдейська, і багато-хто з кра́ю вдались перед Пасхою в Єрусалим, щоб очи́стити себе.	55 Now the Jewish passover was at hand; and many went up from the towns to Jerusalem, before the feast, to purify themselves.
56 І шукали Ісуса вони, а в храмі стоявши, гомоніли один до одно́го: „А як вам здається? Хіба Він не при́йде на свято?“	56 And they were looking for Jesus, and at the temple they kept saying to one another, What do you think, will he not come to the feast?
57 А первосвященики та фарисеї нака́за дали́: як дізнається хто, де Він перебува́тиме, нехай донесе, — щоб схопи́ти Його.	57 But the high priests and the Pharisees had already commanded, that if any man should know where he is, to let them know, so that they might seize him.
