1 А голод став тяжки́й у тім краї.

2 І сталося, як вони скінчи́ли їсти хліб, що привезли були з Єгипту, то сказав до них ба́тько їх: „Верніться, купіть нам трохи їжі!“

3 І сказав йому Юда, говорячи: „Рішуче освідчив нам той муж, кажучи: Не побачите лиця мого без вашого брата з вами!“

4 Як ти пошлеш брата нашого з нами, то ми зі́йдемо, і купимо тобі їжі.

5 А коли не пошлеш, не зі́йдемо, бо муж той сказав нам: Не побачите лиця мого без вашого брата з вами“.

6 І промовив Ізра́їль: „На́що зло ви вчинили мені, що сказали тому мужеві, що ще маєте брата?“

7 А вони відказали: „Розпитуючи, випитував той муж про нас та про місце нашого народження, говорячи: Чи батько ваш іще живий? Чи є в вас брат? І ми розповіли йому відповідно до цих слів. Чи могли ми знати, що скаже: Приведіть вашого брата?“

8 І сказав Юда до Ізраїля, батька свого: „Пошли ж цього юнака зо мною, і встаньмо, та й ходім, і бу́демо жити, і не повмираємо і ми, і ти, і наші діти.

9 Я поручуся за нього, — з моєї руки бу́деш його ти жадати! Коли я не приведу його до тебе, і не поставлю перед лицем твоїм, то буду винним перед тобою по всі дні!

10 А коли б ми були не відтягалися, то тепер уже б вернулися були́ два рази“.

11 І сказав їм Ізра́їль, їх батько: „Коли так, то зробіть ви оце. Візьміть із плодів цього Краю, і віднесіть дарунка мужеві тому: трохи бальзаму, і трохи меду, пахощів, і ладану, дактилів, і мигдалів.

12 А срібла візьміть удвоє в руку свою. А срібло, повернене в отвір ваших мішків, верніть своєю рукою, — може то помилка.

13 А брата вашого заберіть, — і встаньте, ідіть до того мужа.

14 А Бог Всемогутній нехай дасть вам милосердя перед лицем того мужа, і нехай він відпустить вам другого вашого брата й Веніями́на. А я, — певно стратив сина свого́!“

15 І взяли ті люди того дарунка, і взяли вдвоє срібла в руку свою, і Веніямина, і встали, та й зійшли до Єгипту. І стали вони перед лицем Йосиповим.

16 І побачив Йосип Веніямина з ними, і сказав до того, що був над його домом: „Упровадь цих людей до дому, і нехай заріжуть худобину, і приготуй, бо зо мною бу́дуть їсти ці люди опівдні“.

17 І той чоловік зробив, як Йосип сказав був. І впровадив той чоловік тих людей до Йо́сипового дому.

18 І полякалися ті люди, що були впроваджені до Йо́сипового дому. І сказали вони: „Через срібло, повернене напочатку в наших мішках, ми впроваджені, щоб причепитись до нас, і напасти на нас, і забрати за рабів нас та наші осли“.

19 І приступили вони до чоловіка, що над домом Йо́сиповим, та й говорили до нього при вході в дім.

20 І сказали вони: „Послухай, о пане мій, ми зійшли були напочатку купити їжі.

21 І сталося, коли ми прийшли на нічліг, і відкрили мішки свої, — а ось срібло кожного в отворі мішка його, наше срібло за вагою його! І ми вертаємо його нашою рукою!

22 А на купівлю їжі ми знесли нашою рукою інше срібло. Ми не знаємо, хто поклав був наше срібло до наших мішків“.

23 А той відказав: „Мир вам! Не бійтеся! Бог ваш і Бог вашого батька дав вам скарб до ваших мішків. Срібло ваше прийшло до мене“. І вивів до них Симеона.

24 І впровадив той чоловік тих людей до Йо́сипового дому, і дав води, а вони вмили ноги свої, і дав паші їхнім ослам.

25 І вони пригото́вили дарунки до приходу Йосипа опі́вдні, бо почули, що там вони їстимуть хліб.

26 І ввійшов Йо́сип до дому, а вони прине́сли йому до дому дарунка, що в їхній руці. І вони поклонилися йому до землі.

27 А він запитав їх про мир і сказав: „Чи гара́зд вашому батькові старому, про якого ви розповідали? Чи він ще живий?“

28 А вони відказали: „Гаразд рабові твоєму, батькові нашому. Ще він живий“. І вони схилилися, і вклонилися до землі.

29 І звів він очі свої, та й побачив Веніямина, свого брата, сина матері своєї, і промовив: „Чи то ваш наймолодший брат, що ви мені розповідали?“ І сказав: „Нехай Бог буде милости́вий до тебе, мій сину!“

30 І Йо́сип поспішив, бо порушилася його любов до брата його, і хотів він заплакати. І ввійшов він до іншої кімнати, і заплакав там...

31 І вмив він лице своє, і вийшов, і стримався, та й сказав: „Покладіть хліба!“

32 І поклали йому окремо, а їм окремо, й єгиптянам, що їли з ним, окремо, бо єгиптяни не можуть їсти хліб з євреями, бо це огида для Єгипту.

33 І вони посідали перед ним, — перворідний за перворідством своїм, а молодший за молодістю своєю. І здивувалися ці люди один перед о́дним.

34 І він посилав дари страви від себе до них. А дар Веніяминів був більший від дару всіх їх уп'ятеро. І пили вони, і повпива́лися з ним.

Chapter 43

1 THE famine was very severe in the land.

2 And when they had finished eating the wheat which they had brought from Egypt, their father Jacob said to them, Go down to Egypt, and buy us a little grain.

3 And Judah said to him, The man did solemnly charge us, saying, You shall not see my face except your brother is with you.

4 If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy grain for ourselves;

5 But if you will not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, You shall not see my face except your brother is with you.

6 Then their father Israel said to them, Why did you cause me this displeasure, as to tell the man whether you had another brother?

7 And they said, The man asked us straitly about ourselves and our kindred, saying, Is your father still alive? Have you another brother? And we told him simply because of these words; could we have known in advance that he would say to us that we should bring our brother down?

8 And Judah said to Israel his father, Send the lad with us, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and also our little ones.

9 And I will be surety for him; of my hands shall you require him; if I do not bring him back to you, and set him before you, then I shall be guilty before my father forever;

10 For if we had not delayed, perhaps we would have now returned a second time.

11 And their father Israel said to them, If it must be so now, then do this: take some of the best fruits of the land in your sacks, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, gum, and myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds;

12 And take double money with you; and the money that was brought back in the mouth of your sacks, take it again with you; perhaps it was an oversight;

13 Take also your brother, and arise, and go again to the man;

14 And may God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin with you. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.

15 So the men took the present, and they took double money with them, and Benjamin; and rose up and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.

16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, Bring these men into the house, and kill a sheep, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon.

17 And the servant did as Joseph had told him; and brought the men into Joseph's house.

18 And they were afraid, when they brought them into Joseph's house; and they said, It is because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time that we are brought in; so that he may seek occasion against us, and conspire against us, that they may make us slaves, and take away our asses.

19 So they came near to the steward of Joseph's house and spoke with him at the door of the house,

20 And said, We beseech you, O our lord, we truly came down at the first time to buy grain;

21 And it came to pass when we came to the inn that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight; and we have brought it back again with us.

22 And we have brought other money down with us to buy grain: we did not know who put our money in our sacks.

23 He said to them, Peace be to you, fear not; your God, and the God of your father, has put a treasure in your sacks; I had your money. And he brought Simeon out to them.

24 Then the servant brought the men into Joseph's house and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he put fodder before their asses.

25 And the men made ready the present before Joseph came at noon; for they heard that they should eat bread there.

26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which they had in their hands into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the ground.

27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said to them, Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke to me? Is he still alive?

28 And they answered, Your servant our father is well. he is still alive. And they bowed down their heads and made obeisance.

29 And he raised up his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said to them, Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me? And he said. May God be gracious to you, my son.

30 And Joseph made haste; for his heart did yearn for his brother; and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber and wept there.

31 Then he washed his face and went out and controlled his emotions and said, Let us eat.

32 And they served Joseph by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians, who did eat with him, by themselves; because the Egyptians could not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.

33 And they sat before him, the first-born according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth; and the men looked at one another and marveled.

34 And the servants took portions to them from before Joseph; but Benjamin's portion was five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank and were merry with him.

2 І сталося, як вони скінчи́ли їсти хліб, що привезли були з Єгипту, то сказав до них ба́тько їх: „Верніться, купіть нам трохи їжі!“

2 And when they had finished eating the wheat which they had brought from Egypt, their father Jacob said to them, Go down to Egypt, and buy us a little grain.

3 І сказав йому Юда, говорячи: „Рішуче освідчив нам той муж, кажучи: Не побачите лиця мого без вашого брата з вами!“

3 And Judah said to him, The man did solemnly charge us, saying, You shall not see my face except your brother is with you.

4 Як ти пошлеш брата нашого з нами, то ми зі́йдемо, і купимо тобі їжі.

4 If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy grain for ourselves;

5 А коли не пошлеш, не зі́йдемо, бо муж той сказав нам: Не побачите лиця мого без вашого брата з вами“.

5 But if you will not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, You shall not see my face except your brother is with you.

6 І промовив Ізра́їль: „На́що зло ви вчинили мені, що сказали тому мужеві, що ще маєте брата?“

6 Then their father Israel said to them, Why did you cause me this displeasure, as to tell the man whether you had another brother?

7 А вони відказали: „Розпитуючи, випитував той муж про нас та про місце нашого народження, говорячи: Чи батько ваш іще живий? Чи є в вас брат? І ми розповіли йому відповідно до цих слів. Чи могли ми знати, що скаже: Приведіть вашого брата?“

7 And they said, The man asked us straitly about ourselves and our kindred, saying, Is your father still alive? Have you another brother? And we told him simply because of these words; could we have known in advance that he would say to us that we should bring our brother down?

8 І сказав Юда до Ізраїля, батька свого: „Пошли ж цього юнака зо мною, і встаньмо, та й ходім, і бу́демо жити, і не повмираємо і ми, і ти, і наші діти.

8 And Judah said to Israel his father, Send the lad with us, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and also our little ones.

9 Я поручуся за нього, — з моєї руки бу́деш його ти жадати! Коли я не приведу його до тебе, і не поставлю перед лицем твоїм, то буду винним перед тобою по всі дні!

9 And I will be surety for him; of my hands shall you require him; if I do not bring him back to you, and set him before you, then I shall be guilty before my father forever;

10 А коли б ми були не відтягалися, то тепер уже б вернулися були́ два рази“.

10 For if we had not delayed, perhaps we would have now returned a second time.

11 І сказав їм Ізра́їль, їх батько: „Коли так, то зробіть ви оце. Візьміть із плодів цього Краю, і віднесіть дарунка мужеві тому: трохи бальзаму, і трохи меду, пахощів, і ладану, дактилів, і мигдалів.

11 And their father Israel said to them, If it must be so now, then do this: take some of the best fruits of the land in your sacks, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, gum, and myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds;

12 А срібла візьміть удвоє в руку свою. А срібло, повернене в отвір ваших мішків, верніть своєю рукою, — може то помилка.

12 And take double money with you; and the money that was brought back in the mouth of your sacks, take it again with you; perhaps it was an oversight;

13 А брата вашого заберіть, — і встаньте, ідіть до того мужа.

13 Take also your brother, and arise, and go again to the man;

14 А Бог Всемогутній нехай дасть вам милосердя перед лицем того мужа, і нехай він відпустить вам другого вашого брата й Веніями́на. А я, — певно стратив сина свого́!“

14 And may God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin with you. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.

15 І взяли ті люди того дарунка, і взяли вдвоє срібла в руку свою, і Веніямина, і встали, та й зійшли до Єгипту. І стали вони перед лицем Йосиповим.

15 So the men took the present, and they took double money with them, and Benjamin; and rose up and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.

16 І побачив Йосип Веніямина з ними, і сказав до того, що був над його домом: „Упровадь цих людей до дому, і нехай заріжуть худобину, і приготуй, бо зо мною бу́дуть їсти ці люди опівдні“.

16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, Bring these men into the house, and kill a sheep, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon.

17 І той чоловік зробив, як Йосип сказав був. І впровадив той чоловік тих людей до Йо́сипового дому.

17 And the servant did as Joseph had told him; and brought the men into Joseph's house.

18 І полякалися ті люди, що були впроваджені до Йо́сипового дому. І сказали вони: „Через срібло, повернене напочатку в наших мішках, ми впроваджені, щоб причепитись до нас, і напасти на нас, і забрати за рабів нас та наші осли“.

18 And they were afraid, when they brought them into Joseph's house; and they said, It is because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time that we are brought in; so that he may seek occasion against us, and conspire against us, that they may make us slaves, and take away our asses.

19 І приступили вони до чоловіка, що над домом Йо́сиповим, та й говорили до нього при вході в дім.

19 So they came near to the steward of Joseph's house and spoke with him at the door of the house,

20 І сказали вони: „Послухай, о пане мій, ми зійшли були напочатку купити їжі.

20 And said, We beseech you, O our lord, we truly came down at the first time to buy grain;

21 І сталося, коли ми прийшли на нічліг, і відкрили мішки свої, — а ось срібло кожного в отворі мішка його, наше срібло за вагою його! І ми вертаємо його нашою рукою!

21 And it came to pass when we came to the inn that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight; and we have brought it back again with us.

22 А на купівлю їжі ми знесли нашою рукою інше срібло. Ми не знаємо, хто поклав був наше срібло до наших мішків“.

22 And we have brought other money down with us to buy grain: we did not know who put our money in our sacks.

23 А той відказав: „Мир вам! Не бійтеся! Бог ваш і Бог вашого батька дав вам скарб до ваших мішків. Срібло ваше прийшло до мене“. І вивів до них Симеона.

23 He said to them, Peace be to you, fear not; your God, and the God of your father, has put a treasure in your sacks; I had your money. And he brought Simeon out to them.

24 І впровадив той чоловік тих людей до Йо́сипового дому, і дав води, а вони вмили ноги свої, і дав паші їхнім ослам.

24 Then the servant brought the men into Joseph's house and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he put fodder before their asses.

25 І вони пригото́вили дарунки до приходу Йосипа опі́вдні, бо почули, що там вони їстимуть хліб.

25 And the men made ready the present before Joseph came at noon; for they heard that they should eat bread there.

26 І ввійшов Йо́сип до дому, а вони прине́сли йому до дому дарунка, що в їхній руці. І вони поклонилися йому до землі.

26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which they had in their hands into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the ground.

27 А він запитав їх про мир і сказав: „Чи гара́зд вашому батькові старому, про якого ви розповідали? Чи він ще живий?“

27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said to them, Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke to me? Is he still alive?

28 А вони відказали: „Гаразд рабові твоєму, батькові нашому. Ще він живий“. І вони схилилися, і вклонилися до землі.

28 And they answered, Your servant our father is well. he is still alive. And they bowed down their heads and made obeisance.

29 І звів він очі свої, та й побачив Веніямина, свого брата, сина матері своєї, і промовив: „Чи то ваш наймолодший брат, що ви мені розповідали?“ І сказав: „Нехай Бог буде милости́вий до тебе, мій сину!“

29 And he raised up his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said to them, Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me? And he said. May God be gracious to you, my son.

30 І Йо́сип поспішив, бо порушилася його любов до брата його, і хотів він заплакати. І ввійшов він до іншої кімнати, і заплакав там...

30 And Joseph made haste; for his heart did yearn for his brother; and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber and wept there.

31 І вмив він лице своє, і вийшов, і стримався, та й сказав: „Покладіть хліба!“

31 Then he washed his face and went out and controlled his emotions and said, Let us eat.

32 І поклали йому окремо, а їм окремо, й єгиптянам, що їли з ним, окремо, бо єгиптяни не можуть їсти хліб з євреями, бо це огида для Єгипту.

32 And they served Joseph by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians, who did eat with him, by themselves; because the Egyptians could not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.

33 І вони посідали перед ним, — перворідний за перворідством своїм, а молодший за молодістю своєю. І здивувалися ці люди один перед о́дним.

33 And they sat before him, the first-born according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth; and the men looked at one another and marveled.

34 І він посилав дари страви від себе до них. А дар Веніяминів був більший від дару всіх їх уп'ятеро. І пили вони, і повпива́лися з ним.

34 And the servants took portions to them from before Joseph; but Benjamin's portion was five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank and were merry with him.
