Chapter 19

1 AND Saul told Jonathan his son and all his servants that they should kill David.

2 But Jonathan, Saul's son, was delighted much in David; and Jonathan spoke to David, saying, Saul my father seeks to kill you; now therefore take heed to yourself, and sit in a secret place and hide yourself;

3 And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak to my father concerning you; and I will see what is on his mind, and I will tell you.

4 And Jonathan spoke good of David to Saul his father, and said to him, Let not the king sin against his servant David; for he has not sinned against you, and his works are sufficient proof of his loyalty to you;

5 For he put his life at your disposal, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel by his hand; you saw it and rejoiced; and now, why then will you sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?

6 And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan his son; and Saul swore, saying, As the LORD lives, he shall not be put to death.

7 Then Jonathan called David and told him all these things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was with him as in times past.

8 And there was war again; and David went out and fought with the Philistines, and slew them with a great slaughter; and they fled before him.

9 And an evil spirit from the LORD came upon Saul as he sat in his house with his javelin in his hand; and David played the harp in his presence.

10 And Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the javelin; but he fled from Saul's presence, and Saul stuck the javelin into the wall; and David fled, and escaped that night.

11 Saul then sent messengers to David's house to watch him and to slay him in the morning; but Malchel, David's wife, told him, saying, If you do not save yourself tonight, tomorrow you will be put to death.

12 So Malchel let David down through a window; and he fled and escaped.

13 And Malchel took an idol, and laid it in the bed, and put a pillow of goat's skin at the head of it, and covered it with a bedcover.

14 And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, He is sick.

15 And Saul sent the messengers again to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him.

16 And when the messengers came in, behold, there was an idol in the bed, with a pillow of goat's skin at its head.

17 And they told Saul, and Saul said to Malchel, Why have you deceived me so, and let my enemy depart, so that he has escaped? And Malchel said to Saul, He said to me, Let me go; or else I will kill you.

18 So David fled and escaped, and came to Samuel at Ramtha and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Jonath which is in Ramtha.

19 And it was told Saul, saying, Behold, David is at Jonath which is in Ramtha.

20 And Saul sent messengers to take David; and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying and Samuel standing as a leader over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.

21 And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also.

22 Then he himself went to Ramtha, and came as far as the great cistern which is at the end of the town; and Saul said, Where are Samuel and David? And they said to him, Behold, they are at Jonath which is in Ramtha.

23 And he went toward Jonath in Ramtha; and the Spirit of God came upon him also; and he went on, and prophesied, until he came to Jonath in Ramtha.

24 And he stripped off his clothes and prophesied before Samuel, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Wherefore they say, Behold, is Saul also among the prophets?

4 And Jonathan3083 spoke1696 good2896 of David1732 to Saul7586 his father,1 and said559 to him, Let not the king4428 sin2398 against his servant,5650 against David;1732 because3588 he has not sinned2398 against you, and because3588 his works4639 have been to you-ward very3966 good:2896

5 For he did put7760 his life5315 in his hand,3709 and slew5221 the Philistine,6430 and the LORD3068 worked6213 a great1419 salvation8668 for all3605 Israel:3478 you saw7200 it, and did rejoice:8055 why4100 then will you sin2398 against innocent5355 blood,1818 to slay4191 David1732 without2600 a cause?2600

6 And Saul7586 listened8085 to the voice6963 of Jonathan:3083 and Saul7586 swore,7650 As the LORD3068 lives,2416 he shall not be slain.4191

7 And Jonathan3083 called7121 David,1732 and Jonathan3083 showed5046 him all3605 those428 things.1697 And Jonathan3083 brought935 David1732 to Saul,7586 and he was in his presence,6440 as in times865 8543 past.8032

8 And there was war4421 again:3254 and David1732 went3318 out, and fought3898 with the Philistines,6430 and slew5221 them with a great1419 slaughter;4347 and they fled5127 from him.

9 And the evil7451 spirit7307 from the LORD3068 was on Saul,7586 as he sat3427 in his house1004 with his javelin2595 in his hand:3027 and David1732 played5059 with his hand.3027

10 And Saul7586 sought1245 to smite5221 David1732 even to the wall7023 with the javelin:2595 but he slipped6362 away out of Saul's7586 presence,6440 and he smote5221 the javelin2595 into the wall:7023 and David1732 fled,5127 and escaped4422 that night.3915

11 Saul7586 also sent7971 messengers4397 to David's1732 house,1004 to watch8104 him, and to slay4191 him in the morning:1242 and Michal4324 David's1732 wife802 told5046 him, saying,559 If518 you save4422 not your life5315 to night,3915 to morrow4279 you shall be slain.4191

12 So Michal4324 let3381 David1732 down3381 through1157 a window:2474 and he went,3212 and fled,1272 and escaped.4422

13 And Michal4324 took3947 an image,8655 and laid7760 it in the bed,4296 and put7760 a pillow3523 of goats'5795 hair for his bolster,4763 and covered3680 it with a cloth.899

14 And when Saul7586 sent7971 messengers4397 to take3947 David,1732 she said,559 He is sick.2470

15 And Saul7586 sent7971 the messengers4397 again to see7200 David,1732 saying,559 Bring5927 him up to me in the bed,4296 that I may slay4191 him.

16 And when the messengers4397 were come935 in, behold,2009 there was an image8655 in the bed,4296 with a pillow3523 of goats'5795 hair for his bolster.4763

17 And Saul7586 said559 to Michal,4324 Why4100 have you deceived7411 me so,3602 and sent7971 away my enemy,341 that he is escaped?4422 And Michal4324 answered559 Saul,7586 He said559 to me, Let me go;7971 why4100 should I kill4191 you?

18 So David1732 fled,1272 and escaped,4422 and came935 to Samuel8050 to Ramah,7414 and told5046 him all3605 that Saul7586 had done6213 to him. And he and Samuel8050 went3212 and dwelled3427 in Naioth.5121

19 And it was told5046 Saul,7586 saying,559 Behold,2009 David1732 is at Naioth5121 in Ramah.7414

22 Then went3212 he also1571 to Ramah,7414 and came935 to a great1419 well953 that is in Sechu:7906 and he asked7592 and said,559 Where375 are Samuel8050 and David?1732 And one said,559 Behold,2009 they be at Naioth5121 in Ramah.7414
