Chapter 17

1 And Jehoshaphat3092 his son1121 reigned4427 in his stead,8478 and strengthened2388 himself against5921 Israel.3478

2 And he placed5414 forces2428 in all3605 the fenced1219 cities5892 of Judah,3063 and set5414 garrisons5333 in the land776 of Judah,3063 and in the cities5892 of Ephraim,669 which834 Asa609 his father25 had taken.3920

3 And the LORD3068 was with Jehoshaphat,3092 because3588 he walked1980 in the first7223 ways1870 of his father25 David,1732 and sought1875 not to Baalim;1168

4 But sought1875 to the Lord God430 of his father,25 and walked1980 in his commandments,4687 and not after the doings4639 of Israel.3478

5 Therefore the LORD3068 established3559 the kingdom4467 in his hand;3027 and all3605 Judah3063 brought5414 to Jehoshaphat3092 presents;4503 and he had1961 riches6239 and honor3519 in abundance.7230

6 And his heart3820 was lifted1361 up in the ways1870 of the LORD:3068 moreover5750 he took away5493 the high1116 places and groves842 out of Judah.3063

7 Also in the third7969 year8141 of his reign4427 he sent7971 to his princes,8269 even to Benhail,1134 and to Obadiah,5662 and to Zechariah,2148 and to Nethaneel,5417 and to Michaiah,4322 to teach3925 in the cities5892 of Judah.3063

8 And with them he sent Levites,3881 even Shemaiah,8098 and Nethaniah,5418 and Zebadiah,2069 and Asahel,6214 and Shemiramoth,8070 and Jehonathan,3083 and Adonijah,138 and Tobijah,2900 and Tobadonijah,2899 Levites;3881 and with them Elishama476 and Jehoram,3088 priests.3548

9 And they taught3925 in Judah,3063 and had the book5612 of the law8451 of the LORD3068 with them, and went5437 about5437 throughout all3605 the cities5892 of Judah,3063 and taught3925 the people.5971

10 And the fear6343 of the LORD3068 fell1961 on all3605 the kingdoms4467 of the lands776 that were round5439 about Judah,3063 so that they made no3808 war3898 against5973 Jehoshaphat.3092

11 Also some of the Philistines6430 brought935 Jehoshaphat3092 presents,4503 and tribute4853 silver;3701 and the Arabians6163 brought935 him flocks,6629 seven7651 thousand505 and seven7651 hundred3967 rams,352 and seven7651 thousand505 and seven7651 hundred3967 he goats.8495

12 And Jehoshaphat3092 waxed1980 great1432 exceedingly;4605 and he built1129 in Judah3063 castles,1003 and cities5892 of store.4543

13 And he had1961 much7227 business4399 in the cities5892 of Judah:3063 and the men582 of war,4421 mighty1368 men of valor,2428 were in Jerusalem.3389

14 And these428 are the numbers6486 of them according to the house1004 of their fathers:1 Of Judah,3063 the captains8269 of thousands;505 Adnah5734 the chief,8269 and with him mighty1368 men of valor2428 three7969 hundred3967 thousand.505

15 And next5921 3027 to him was Jehohanan3076 the captain,8269 and with him two hundred3967 and fourscore8084 thousand.505

16 And next5921 3027 him was Amasiah6007 the son1121 of Zichri,2147 who willingly5068 offered himself to the LORD;3068 and with him two hundred3967 thousand505 mighty1368 men of valor.2428

17 And of Benjamin;1144 Eliada450 a mighty1368 man of valor,2428 and with him armed5401 men with bow7198 and shield4043 two hundred3967 thousand.505

18 And next5921 3027 him was Jehozabad,3075 and with him an hundred3967 and fourscore8084 thousand505 ready prepared2502 for the war.6635

19 These428 waited8334 on the king,4428 beside905 those whom834 the king4428 put5414 in the fenced4013 cities5892 throughout all3605 Judah.3063

2 And he placed mighty men in all the fortified cities of Judah, and appointed governors in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim which Asa his father had taken.

3 And the LORD was with Jehoshaphat because he walked in the first ways of his father David and did not pray to images;

4 But he prayed to the LORD God of his father and walked in his commandments and kept his statutes, and did not do according to the ways of Israel.

5 Therefore the LORD established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought presents to Jehoshaphat and he had riches and honor in abundance.

6 And his heart was strengthened in the ways of the LORD; moreover he uprooted the altars and the high places which were within the territory of Judah.

7 Also in the third year of his reign he sent and called his princes and the commanders of the armies, even to Obadiah, Zechariah, Nathanael, Melachiah, to teach in the cities of Judah.

8 And with them were the Levites, even Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zechariah, Ashaiel, Natorah, Jonathan, Adonijah, and Tobiah. These were all Levites, and with them were Elishama and Jehoram, priests.

9 And they taught in all the land of Judah, having the book of the law of the LORD with them, and went about throughout all the cities of Judah and taught the people.

10 And the fear of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were round about Judah, so that they made no war against Jehoshaphat.

11 Also some of the cities of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents, silver, and poll tax; and the Arabians brought him flocks, seven thousand and seven hundred rams, and seven thousand and seven hundred he-goats, yearly.

12 And Jehoshaphat grew exceedingly rich; and he built in Judah castles and store cities.

13 And he had much business in the cities of Judah; and the men of war, mighty men of valour, were in Jerusalem.

14 And this is the number of them according to the house of their fathers. Of Judah, the commanders of thousands: Adino the chief, and with him mighty men of valour, three hundred thousand.

15 And next to him was Johanan the commander, and with him two hundred and eighty thousand valiant men.

16 And next to him was Shemai the son of Zerah, with whom the LORD was pleased, and with him two hundred thousand valiant men.

17 And of Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty man of valour, and with him, armed with bow and shield, two hundred thousand.

18 And next to him was Jehozabad, a mighty man, and with him a hundred and eighty thousand ready for the war.

19 These were all who served King Jehoshaphat, besides those whom the king put in the fortified cities throughout all the land of Judah.
